We consider the influence of the electron spin on the nonlinear propagation of whistler waves. For this purpose a recently developed electron two-fluid model, where the spin up- and down populations are treated as different fluids, is adapted to the electron MHD regime. We then derive a nonlinear Schrodinger equation for whistler waves, and compare the coefficients of nonlinearity with and without spin effects. The relative importance of spin effects depend on the plasma density and temperature as well as the external magnetic field strength and the wave frequency. The significance of our results to various plasmas are discussed.
It is shown that the critical layer analysis, involved in the linear theory of internal modes, can be extended continuously into the early nonlinear regime. For the m=1 resistive mode, the dynamical analysis involves two small parameters: the inverse of the magnetic Reynolds number S and the m=1 mode amplitude A, that measures the amount of nonlinearities in the system. The location of the instantaneous critical layer and the dominant dynamical equations inside it are evaluated self-consistently, as A increases and crosses some S-dependent thresholds. A special emphasis is put on the influence…
The linear drift-tearing mode is analyzed for different regimes of the plasma-$β$, ion-skin-depth parameter space with an unreduced, extended-MHD model. New dispersion relations are found at moderate plasma $β$ and previous drift-tearing results are classified as applicable at small plasma $β$. The drift stabilization of the mode in the regimes varies from non-existent/weak to complete. As the diamagnetic-drift frequency is proportional to the plasma $β$, verification exercises with unreduced, extended-MHD models in the small plasma-$β$ regimes are impractical. The new dispersion relations in …
Here we consider the influence on the electron spin in the MHD regime. Recently developed models which include spin-velocity correlations are taken as a starting point. A theoretical argument is presented, suggesting that in the MHD regime a single fluid electron model with spin correlations is equivalent to a model with spin-up and spin-down electrons constituting different fluids, but where the spin-velocity correlations are omitted. Three wave interaction of 2 shear Alfven waves and a compressional Alfven wave is then taken as a model problem to evaluate the asserted equivalence. The theore…
Drift instabilities contribute to the formation of edge turbulence and zonal flows, and thus the anomalous transport in tokamaks. Experiments often found micro-scale tur- bulence strongly coupled with large-scale magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processes, whereas a general framework has been lacking that can cover both regimes, in partic- ular, their coupling. In this paper, the linear resistive drift wave instability (DWI) is investigated using a full 2-fluid MHD model, as well as its numerical implementation in NIMROD code. Both analytical and numerical analyses reveal a macro-scale global drift w…
The aim of this study is to analyze the feedback process between the magnetic turbulence and the pressure gradients in LHD inward-shifted configurations as well as its role in the transition between the soft-hard MHD regimes for instabilities driven by the mode $1/2$ in the middle plasma. In the present paper we summarize the results of two simulations with different Lundquist numbers, $S = 2.5 \times 10^5$ and $10^6$, assuming a plasma in the slow reconnection regime. The results for the high Lundquist number simulation shows that the magnetic turbulence and the pressure gradient in the middl…
The potential formation of the quasi-single-helicity (QSH) state in the Keda Torus eXperiment (KTX) is investigated in resistive MHD simulations using the NIMROD code. We focus on the effects of finite resistivity on the mode structure and characteristics of the dominant linear and nonlinear resistive tearing-mode in a finite $β$, cylindrical configuration of reversed field pinch model for KTX. In the typical resistive regimes of KTX where Lundquist number $S=5 \times 10^4$, the plasma transitions to a steady QSH state after evolving through an initial transient phase with multiple helicities.…
During the 2003 experimental campaign, the aim of realizing reliable fully non inductive discharges has been successfully completed in Tore Supra. One the major difficulties in optimizing this scenario comes from MHD stability issues. Indeed, the current profile obtained with LH antennas in these experiments is prone to the triggering of single or double tearing modes. Under certain conditions, the discharges enters in a regime of permanent MHD activity. The present work investigates the MHD properties of these fully non-inductive discharges in the operational space defined by the toroidal mag…
The optimization of LHD discharges in inward-shifted configurations with $1/3$ sawtooth like activity is an open issue. These relaxation events limit the LHD performance driving a periodic plasma deconfinement. The aim of this study is to analyze the $1/3$ sawtooth like activity in plasmas with different stability properties to foreseen the best operation conditions and minimize its undesired effects. We summarize the results of several MHD simulations for plasmas with Lundquist numbers between $10^5$ and $10^6$ in the slow reconnection regime, studying the equilibria properties during the ons…
Regular oscillations of the central electron temperature have been observed by means of ECE and SXR diagnostics during non-inductively driven discharges on Tore Supra. These oscillations are sustained by LHCD, do not have a helical structure and, therefore, cannot be ascribed as MHD phenomena. The most probable explanation of this oscillating regime (O-regime) is the assumption that the plasma current density (and, thus, the q-profile) and the electron temperature evolve as a non-linearly coupled predator-pray system. The integrated modelling code CRONOS has been used to demonstrate that the c…
In this work, a quasi-linear model for plasma flow response to the resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) in a tokamak has been rigorously developed in the resistive-inertial (RI) and viscous-resistive (VR) regimes purely from the two-field reduced MHD model. Models for plasma response to RMP are commonly composed of equations for the resonant magnetic field response (i.e. the magnetic island) and the torque balance of plasma flow. However, in previous plasma response models, the magnetic island and the torque balance equations are often derived separately from reduced MHD and full MHD equations…
A set of reduced Hall magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations are used to evaluate the stability of large aspect ratio current sheets to the formation of plasmoids (secondary islands). Reconnection is driven by resistivity in this analysis, which occurs at the resistive skin depth $d_η\equiv S_L^{-1/2} \sqrt{L v_A/γ}$, where $S_L$ is the Lundquist number, $L$ the length of the current sheet, $v_A$ the Alfvén speed, and $γ$ the growth rate. Modifications to a recent resistive MHD analysis [N.\ F.\ Loureiro, A.\ A.\ Schekochihin, and S.\ C. Cowley, Phys.\ Plasmas {\bf 14}, 100703 (2007)] arise when …
Fundamental Lagrangian, frozen-in and topological invariants can be useful to explain systematic connections between plasma parameters. At high plasma temperature the dissipation is small and the robust invariances are manifested. We invoke a frozen-in invariant which is an extension of the Ertel's theorem and connects the vorticity of the large scale motions with the profile of the safety factor and of particle density. Assuming ergodicity of the small scale turbulence we consider the approximative preservation of the invariant for changes of the vorticity in an annular region of finite radia…
This paper discusses the transition to fast growth of the tearing instability in thin current sheets in the collisionless limit where electron inertia drives the reconnection process. It has been previously suggested that in resistive MHD there is a natural maximum aspect ratio (ratio of sheet length and breadth to thickness) which may be reached for current sheets with a macroscopic length L, the limit being provided by the fact that the tearing mode growth time becomes of the same order as the Alfvèn time calculated on the macroscopic scale (Pucci and Velli (2014)). For current sheets with a…
The development of small- and no-ELM regimes for ITER is a high priority topic due to the risks associated to type-I ELMs. By considering non-linear extended MHD simulations of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak with the JOREK code, we probe a regime that avoids type-I ELMs completely provided that the separatrix density is high enough. The dynamics of the pedestal in this regime are observed to be qualitatively similar to the so-called quasi-continuous exhaust (QCE) regime in several ways. Repetitive type-I ELMs are substituted by roughly constant levels of outwards transport caused by peeling-balloon…
The paper examines the prospects of using laser plasmas for studying novel regimes of the magnetic field line reconnection and charged particle acceleration. Basic features of plasma dynamics in the three-dimensional configurations relevant to the formation of current sheets in a plasma are addressed by analyzing exact self-similar solutions of the magneto-hydrodynamics and electron magneto-hydrodynamics equations. Then the magnetic field annihilation in the ultrarelativistic limit is considered, when the opposite polarity magnetic field is generated in collisionless plasma by multiple laser p…
We study the stability properties of Rayleigh unstable flows both in the purely hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) regimes for two different values of the shear $q=2.1, 4.2$ ($q = - d\lnΩ/ d\ln r$) and compare it with the Keplerian case $q=1.5$. We find that the $q>2$ regime is unstable both in the hydrodynamic and in the MHD limit (with an initially weak magnetic field). In this regime, the velocity fluctuations dominate the magnetic fluctuations. In contrast, in the $q<2$ (magnetorotational instability (MRI)) regime the magnetic fluctuations dominate. This highlights two different pa…

Axisymmetric ($m=0$) gyrokinetic and extended-MHD simulations of sheared-flow Z-pinch plasma are performed with the high-order finite volume code COGENT. The present gyrokinetic model solves the long-wavelength limit of the gyrokinetic equation for both ion and electron species coupled to the electrostatic gyro-Poisson equation for the electrostatic potential. The electromagnetic MHD model includes the effects of the gyro-viscous pressure tensor, diamagnetic electron and ion heat fluxes, and generalized Ohm's law. A prominent feature of this work is that the radial profiles for the plasma dens…
We present a model for compressible sub-Alfvenic isothermal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in low-beta plasmas and numerically test it. We separate MHD fluctuations into 3 distinct families - Alfven, slow, and fast modes. We find that, production of slow and fast modes by Alfvenic turbulence is suppressed. As a result, Alfven modes in compressible regime exhibit scalings and anisotropy similar to those in incompressible regime. Slow modes passively mimic Alfven modes. However, fast modes show isotropy and a scaling similar to acoustic turbulence.
One method and two results are contributed to the complete understanding about MHD laminar flow in annular channel with transverse magnetic field in this paper. In terms of the method, a computationally cheap semi-analytic algorithm is developed based on spectral method and perturbation expansion. By virtue of the fast computation, dense cases with almost continuous varying Hartmann number $M$, Reynolds number $Re$ and cross-section ratio $η$ are calculated to explore the flow patterns that are missed in previous research. In terms of the results of inertialess regime, we establish the average…
A two-field Hamiltonian gyrofluid model for kinetic Alfvén waves retaining ion finite Larmor radius corrections, parallel magnetic field fluctuations and electron inertia, is used to study turbulent cascades from the MHD to the sub-ion scales. Special attention is paid to the case of imbalance between waves propagating along or opposite to the ambient magnetic field. For weak turbulence in the absence of electron inertia, kinetic equations for the spectral density of the conserved quantities (total energy and generalized cross-helicity) are obtained. They provide a global description, matching…
In collisionless and weakly collisional plasmas, such as hot accretion flows onto compact objects, the magnetorotational instability (MRI) can differ significantly from the standard (collisional) MRI. In particular, pressure anisotropy with respect to the local magnetic-field direction can both change the linear MRI dispersion relation and cause nonlinear modifications to the mode structure and growth rate, even when the field and flow perturbations are small. This work studies these pressure-anisotropy-induced nonlinearities in the weakly nonlinear, high-ion-beta regime, before the MRI satura…
A brief review of the existing kinetic-magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) hybrid models for the alpha particle physics in burning plasma demonstrates that the pressure-coupling scheme is equivalent to the current-coupling scheme only in a specific dynamic regime where the alpha particle density is much lower than the background ion and electron. A more comprehensive kinetic-multifluid model is proposed for a proper account of the dynamical regime of the burning plasma where both the energetic alpha and the helium ash particles are present. The Kinetic-multifluid model is further simplified into an exten…
We present numerical simulations and explore scalings and anisotropy of compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence. Our study covers both gas pressure dominated (high beta) and magnetically dominated (low beta) plasmas at different Mach numbers. In addition, we present results for superAlfvenic turbulence and discuss in what way it is similar to the subAlfvenic turbulence. We describe a technique of separating different magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes (slow, fast and Alfven) and apply it to our simulations. We show that, for both high and low beta cases, Alfven and slow modes reveal the…
We investigate the propagation of MHD fast waves into a cylindrical coronal loop through an inhomogeneous stationary flow region. The background flow is assumed to have a small, spatially periodic structure in addition to a constant speed. We focus on the absorption of the wave energy in Alfvén resonance, comparing with the constant flow case. A new flow (absorption) regime is induced by the periodic flow structure which enhances the absorption for the antiparallel flow and inverse absorption (overreflection) for the parallel flow with respect to the axial wave vector, depending on the transit…
Extended MHD is a one-fluid model that incorporates two-fluid effects such as electron inertia and the Hall drift. This model is used to construct fully nonlinear Alfvénic wave solutions, and thereby derive the kinetic and magnetic spectra by resorting to a Kolmogorov-like hypothesis based on the constant cascading rates of the energy and generalized helicities of this model. The magnetic and kinetic spectra are derived in the ideal $\left(k < 1/λ_i\right)$, Hall $\left(1/λ_i < k < 1/λ_e \right)$, and electron inertia $\left(k > 1/λ_e\right)$ regimes; $k$ is the wavenumber and $λ_s = c/ω_{p s}…

We discuss results on the dynamics of thermalization for a model with Gaussian interactions between two classical many-body systems trapped in external harmonic potentials. Previous work showed an approximate, power-law scaling of the interaction energy with the number of particles, with particular focus on the dependence of the anomalous exponent on the interaction strength. Here we explore the role of the interaction range in determining anomalous exponents, showing that it is a more relevant parameter to differentiate distinct regimes of responses of the system. More specifically, on varyin…
Magnetic reconnection in laboratory, space and astrophysical plasmas is often invoked to explain explosive energy release and particle acceleration. However, the timescales involved in classical models within the macroscopic MHD regime are far too slow to match the observations. Here we revisit the tearing instability by performing visco-resistive two-dimensional numerical simulations of the evolution of thin current sheets, for a variety of initial configurations and of values of the Lunquist number $S$, up to $10^7$. Results confirm that when the critical aspect ratio of $S^{1/3}$ is reached…
Shocks waves are a ubiquitous feature of many astrophysical plasma systems, and an important process for energy dissipation and transfer. The physics of these shock waves are frequently treated/modeled as a collisional, fluid MHD discontinuity, despite the fact that many shocks occur in the collisionless regime. In light of this, using fully kinetic, 3D simulations of non-relativistic, parallel propagating collisionless shocks comprised of electron-positron plasma, we detail the deviation of collisionless shocks form MHD predictions for varying magnetization/Alfvénic Mach numbers, with particu…
Recent calculations by Quataert et al. (2002) found that the growth rates of the magnetorotational instability (MRI) in a collisionless plasma can differ significantly from those calculated using MHD. This can be important in hot accretion flows around compact objects. In this paper we study the transition from the collisionless kinetic regime to the collisional MHD regime, mapping out the dependence of the MRI growth rate on collisionality. A kinetic closure scheme for a magnetized plasma is used that includes the effect of collisions via a BGK operator. The transition to MHD occurs as the me…
The nonlinear dynamics of a bundle of magnetic flux ropes driven by stationary fluid motions at their endpoints is studied, by performing numerical simulations of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations. The development of MHD turbulence is shown, where the system reaches a state that is characterized by the ratio between the Alfven time (the time for incompressible MHD waves to travel along the field lines) and the convective time scale of the driving motions. This ratio of time scales determines the energy spectra and the relaxation toward different regimes ranging from weak to strong turbul…
Much of the progress in our understanding of dynamo mechanisms has been made within the theoretical framework of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). However, for sufficiently diffuse media, the Hall effect eventually becomes non-negligible. We present results from three dimensional simulations of the Hall-MHD equations subjected to random non-helical forcing. We study the role of the Hall effect in the dynamo efficiency for different values of the Hall parameter, using a pseudospectral code to achieve exponentially fast convergence. We also study energy transfer rates among spatial scales to determine…
Context : In the linear, β=0 MHD regime, the transient properties of MHD waves in the vicinity of 2D null points are well known. The waves are decoupled and accumulate at predictable parts of the magnetic topology: fast waves accumulate at the null point; whereas Alfvén waves cannot cross the separatricies. However, in nonlinear MHD mode conversion can occur at regions of inhomogeneous Alfvén speed, suggesting that the decoupled nature of waves may not extend to the nonlinear regime. Aims: We investigate the behaviour of low-amplitude Alfvén waves about a 2D magnetic null point in nonlinear, β…
In this paper, we report our recent findings on the relativistic Weibel instability and its nonlinear saturation by performing numerical simulations of collisionless plasmas. Analysis of the obtained numerical results revealed that the nonlinear phase of the Weibel instability can be described by characteristic phases based on the Weibel filaments' current density in terms of particle and Alfvén limit currents. We also analyzed the relativistic kink instability based on the energy principle in the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) regime, and found that the Weibel filaments do not suffer from the kink…
