Ab initio calculations and statistical mechanics are combined to elucidate the thermodynamics of H vacancies in MgH2. A general method based on a grand-canonical ensemble of defect configurations is introduced to model the exchange of hydrogen between crystalline MgH2 and gas-phase H2. We find that, at temperatures and hydrogen partial pressures of practical interest, MgH2 is capable of accommodating only very small concentrations of hydrogen vacancies, which consist mainly of isolated defects rather than vacancy clusters, contrary to what is expected from a simple energetic analysis.
Formation of a defect face-centered cubic structure containing metal vacancies in Ni-H and Pd-H alloys was observed experimentally at high temperature annealing under high hydrogen pressure. Appearance of vacancies in the fcc structure of the Pd hydride and several other metal hydrides can be accounted for by electronic origin assuming that valence electron energy is minimized due to Hume-Rothery effects.
Hydrogen embrittlement in zirconium alloys is one of current challenges of nuclear reactor containment and can lead to a rapid decrease in mechanical properties of materials. Although many previous studies investigated the mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement at high hydrogen concentration, few studies concentrate on the mechanism at low hydrogen concentration which is before the formation of hydrides (only in the hydrogen complex state). The purpose of this study is to illuminate the formation mechanism of hydrogen complex. We calculate the formation energy Evac binding energy EH, EH-vac using…
We report first-principles calculations which demonstrate that vacancies can combine with hydrogen impurities in bulk aluminum and play a crucial role in the embrittlement of this prototypical ductile solid. Our studies of hydrogen-induced vacancy superabundant formation and vacancy clusterization in aluminum lead to the conclusion that a large number of H atoms (up to twelve) can be trapped at a single vacancy, which over-compensates the energy cost to form the defect. In the presence of trapped H atoms, three nearest-neighbor single vacancies which normally would repel each other, aggregate …
Hydrogen segregation to vacancies in the surface and subsurface layers of (111) and (100) surfaces of Pd is studied in the density functional theory (DFT) approach. Adsorption energies and configurations of various clusters of H atoms at the vacancies are calculated. The adsorption energy varies for different sites in the vacancies with the distance to the surface from -0.26 eV (close to that of the bulk clusters) to -0.62 eV. Enhanced binding is found for the sites above the pores produced by vacancies in the subsurface layer. For the (111) surface vacancy the most favorable for segregation a…
Understanding the structure of ZnO surface reconstructions and their resultant properties is crucial to the rational design of ZnO-containing devices ranging from optoelectronics to catalysts. Here, we are motivated by recent experimental work which showed a new surface reconstruction containing Zn vacancies ordered in a Zn(3x3) pattern in the subsurface of (0001)-O terminated ZnO. A reconstruction with Zn vacancies on (0001)-O is surprising and counterintuitive because Zn vacancies enhance the surface dipole rather than reduce it. In this work, we show using Density Functional Theory (DFT) th…
Recent experiments on hydrogenated amorphous silicon using infrared absorption spectroscopy have indicated the presence of mono- and divacancy in samples for concentration of up to 14\% hydrogen. Motivated by this observation, we study the microstructure of hydrogen in two model networks of hydrogen-rich amorphous silicon with particular emphasis on the nature of the distribution (of hydrogen), the presence of defects, and the characteristic features of the nuclear magnetic resonance spectra at low and high concentration of hydrogen. Our study reveals the presence of vacancies, which are the b…
The presence of elemental vacancies in materials is inevitable according to statistical thermodynamics, which will decide the chemical and physical properties of the investigated system. However, the controlled manipulation of vacancies for specific applications is a challenge. Here we report a facile method for creating large concentrations of S vacancies in the inert basal plane of MoS2 supported on semimetal CoMoP2. With a small applied potential, S atoms can be removed in the form of H2S due to the optimized free energy of formation. The existence of vacancies favors electron injection fro…
We investigate the effect of oxygen vacancies and hydrogen dopants at the surface and inside slabs of LaAlO3, SrTiO3, and LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures on the electronic properties by means of electronic structure calculations as based on density functional theory. Depending on the concentration, the presence of these defects in LaAlO3 slab can suppress the surface conductivity. In contrast, in insulating SrTiO3 slabs already very small concentrations of oxygen vacancies or hydrogen dopant atoms induce a finite occupation of the conduction band. Surface defects in insulating LaAlO3/SrTiO3 het…
Interaction between hydrogen (H) and metals is central to many materials problems of scientific and technological importance. Chief among them is the development of H storage and H-resistant materials. H segregation or trapping at lattice defects, including vacancies, dislocations, grain boundaries, etc, plays a crucial role in determining the properties of these materials. Here, through first-principles simulations, we propose a unified mechanism involving charge transfer induced strain destabilization to understand H segregation behavior at vacancies. We discover that H prefers to occupy int…
Oxygen vacancies (VO), a common type of point defects in metal oxides materials, play important roles on the physical and chemical properties. To obtain stoichiometric oxide crystal, the pre-existing VO is always removed via careful post-annealing treatment at high temperature in air or oxygen atmosphere. However, the annealing conditions is difficult to control and the removal of VO in bulk phase is restrained due to high energy barrier of VO migration. Here, we selected VO2 crystal film as the model system and developed an alternative annealing treatment aided by controllable hydrogen doping…
Using ab initio calculations, we study the electronic and structural properties of vacancies and hydrogen adsorbates on trilayer graphene. Those defects are found to share similar low-energy electronic features, since they both remove a pz electron from the honeycomb lattice and induce a defect level near the Fermi energy. However, a vacancy also leaves unpaired $σ$ electrons on the lattice, which lead to important structural differences and also contribute to magnetism. We explore both ABA and ABC stackings and compare properties such as formation energies, magnetic moments, spin density and …
The vacancy concentration at finite temperatures is studied for a series of (CoCrFeMn)$_{1-x_\mathrm{Ni}}$Ni$_{x_\mathrm{Ni}}$ alloys by grand-canonical Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations. The vacancy formation energies are calculated from a classical interatomic potential and exhibit a distribution due to the different chemical environments of the vacated sites. In dilute alloys, this distribution features multiple discrete peaks, while concentrated alloys exhibit an unimodal distribution as there are many different chemical environments of similar vacancy formation energy. MC simulations using a n…
Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations are performed to study hydrogen physisorption in different nano carbon porous materials made up of different substructures including carbon nanotubes (CNT), graphene sheets and C60. Hydrogen weight percentage (wt%) at different temperatures with pressure ranging from 1 to 20MPa are predicted. Fugacity and quantum effects on hydrogen adsorption are investigated. Different structural dimensions including the sizes of the substructures and spacing between the substructures are used to study the geometrical effects on hydrogen storage capacity in carb…
We use a combination of ab initio calculations and statistical mechanics to investigate the substitution of Li+ for Mg2+ in magnesium hydride (MgH2) accompanied by the formation of hydrogen vacancies with positive charge (with respect to the original ion at the site). We show here that the binding energy between dopants and vacancy defects leads to a significant fraction of trapped vacancies and therefore a dramatic reduction of the number of free vacancies available for diffusion. The concentration of free vacancies initially increases with dopant concentration, but reaches a maximum at aroun…
In this study we report on the results from emission $^{57}$Fe M${ö}$ssbauer Spectroscopy experiments, using dilute $^{57}$Mn implantation into pristine (TiO$_2$) and hydrogenated anatase held at temperatures between 300-700 K. Results of the electronic structure and local environment are complemented with ab-initio calculations. Upon implantation both Fe$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{3+}$ are observed in pristine anatase, where the latter demonstrates the spin-lattice relaxation. The spectra obtained for hydrogenated anatase show no Fe$^{3+}$ contribution, suggesting that hydrogen acts as a donor. Due to t…
We discuss the applicability of the pseudopotential-like self-interaction correction (pSIC) to the study of defect energetics and electronic structure of In2O3. Our results predict that substitutional (at oxygen sites) and interstitial (at antibonding positions) hydrogen, as well as oxygen vacancies with charges +1 and +2, are stable configurations of defects in cubic In2O3; the former form shallow levels (only as substitutional defects), whereas the latter form deep levels. The band structure calculated with the pSIC shows an excellent agreement with experimental data. In particular, the gap …
We introduce a simple but efficient method for grand-canonical twist averaging in quantum Monte Carlo calculations. By evaluating the thermodynamic grand potential instead of the ground state total energy, we greatly reduce the sampling errors caused by twist-dependent fluctuations in the particle number. We apply this method to the electron gas and to metallic lithium, aluminum, and solid atomic hydrogen. We show that, even when using a small number of twists, grand-canonical twist averaging of the grand potential produces better estimates of ground state energies than the widely used canonic…
Nonstoichiometric ceria(CeO$_{2-δ}$) is a candidate reaction medium to facilitate two step water splitting cycles and generate hydrogen. Improving upon its thermodynamic suitability through doping requires an understanding of its vacancy thermodynamics. Using density functional theory(DFT) calculations and a cluster expansion based Monte Carlo simulations, we have studied the high temperature thermodynamics of intrinsic oxygen vacancies in ceria. The DFT+$U$ approach was used to get the ground state energies of various vacancy configurations in ceria, which were subsequently fit to a cluster e…
Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations show a weak interaction between hydrogen and helium in iron, in contrast to previous reports of a strong trapping of hydrogen at helium. The strong preference of He and H to occupy regions with low electronic density (such as vacancies) explains this discrepancy, with vacancy-He and vacancy-H binding forces concealing the repulsive interaction between He and H. Furthermore, Rate Theory simulations based on our DFT-calculated V$_n$He$_m$H$_p$ cluster energetics predict, as it is observed in some experiments, that synergetic effects could be expected …
This work presents an in-depth investigation of the properties of complexes composed of hydrogen, silicon or oxygen with carbon, which are major unintentional impurities in undoped GaN. This manuscript is a complement to our previous work on carbon--carbon and carbon-vacancy complexes. We have employed a first-principles method using Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof hybrid functionals within the framework of generalized Kohn-Sham density functional theory. Two H--C, four Si--C and five O--C complexes in different charge states have been considered. After full geometry relaxations, formation energies, b…
Li$_{4}$BN$_{3}$H$_{10}$ is of great interest for hydrogen storage and for lithium-ion battery solid electrolytes because of its high hydrogen content and high lithium-ion conductivity, respectively. The practical hydrogen storage application of this complex hydride is, however, limited due to irreversibility and cogeneration of ammonia (NH$_{3}$) during the decomposition. We report a first-principles density-functional theory study of native point defects and defect complexes in Li$_{4}$BN$_{3}$H$_{10}$, and propose an atomistic mechanism for the material's decomposition that involves mass tr…
We have carried out ab initio electronic structure calculations on graphane (hydrogenated graphene) with single and double vacancy defects. Our analysis of the density of states reveal that such vacancies induce the mid gap states and modify the band gap. The induced states are due to the unpaired electrons on carbon atoms. Interestingly the placement and the number of such states is found to be sensitive to the distance between the vacancies. Furthermore we also found that in most of the cases the vacancies induce a local magnetic moment.
Quasi free standing monolayer graphene (QFMLG) grown on SiC by selective Si evaporation from the Si-rich SiC(0001) face and H intercalation displays irregularities in STM and AFM analysis, appearing as localized features, which we previously identified as vacancies in the H layer coverage [Y Murata, et al. Nano Res, in press, DOI: 10.1007/s12274-017-1697-x]. The size, shape, brightness, location, and concentration of these features, however, are variable, depending on the hydrogenation conditions. In order to shed light on the nature of these features, in this work we perform a systematic Dens…
Determining the types and concentrations of vacancies present in intentionally doped GaN is a notoriously difficult and long-debated problem. Here we use an unconventional approach, based on thermal transport modeling, to determine the prevalence of vacancies in previous measurements. This allows us to provide conclusive evidence of the recent hypothesis that gallium vacancies in ammonothermally grown samples can be complexed with hydrogen. Our calculations for O-doped and Mg-O co-doped samples yield a consistent picture interlinking dopant and vacancy concentration, carrier density, and therm…
Atomistic calculations were carried out to investigate the mechanical properties of Pd crystals as a combined function of structural defects, hydrogen concentration and high temperature. These factors are found to individually induce degradation in the mechanical strength of Pd in a monotonous manner. In addition, defects such as vacancies and grain boundaries could provide a driving force for hydrogen segregation, thus enhance the tendency for their trapping. The simulations show that hydrogen maintains the highest localization at grain boundaries at ambient temperatures. This finding correla…
We report a first-principles study of the energetics of hydrogen absorption and desorption (i.e. H-vacancy formation) on pure and Ti-doped sodium alanate (NaAlH4) surfaces. We find that the Ti atom facilitates the dissociation of H2 molecules as well as the adsorption of H atoms. In addition, the dopant makes it energetically more favorable to creat H vacancies by saturating Al dangling bonds. Interestingly, our results show that the Ti dopant brings close in energy all the steps presumably involved in the absorption and desorption of hydrogen, thus facilitating both and enhancing the reaction…
Structural defects in materials such as vacancies, grain boundaries, and dislocations may trap hydrogen and a local accumulation of hydrogen at these defects can lead to the degradation of the materials properties. An important aspect in obtaining insight into hydrogen induced embrittlement on the atomistic level is to understand the diffusion of hydrogen in these materials. In our study we employ kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulations to investigate hydrogen diffusion in bcc iron within different microstructures. All input data to the kMC model, such as available sites, solution energies, and …
We perform ab initio calculations of hydrogen-based tunneling defects in alumina to identify deleterious two-level systems (TLS) in superconducting qubits. The defects analyzed include bulk hydrogenated Al vacancies, bulk hydrogen interstitial defects, and a surface OH rotor. The formation energies of the defects are first computed for an Al- and O-rich environment to give the likelihood of defect occurrence during growth. The potential energy surfaces are then computed and the corresponding dipole moments are evaluated to determine the coupling of the defects to an electric field. Finally, th…
Enhanced room temperature ferromagnetism in nanostructured MoS2 flakes by hydrogen post-treatment: Combined experimental and first-principles-based studies
Using density-functional theory in combination with a thermodynamic formalism we calculate the relative stability of various structural models of the polar O-terminated (000-1)-O surface of ZnO. Model surfaces with different concentrations of oxygen vacancies and hydrogen adatoms are considered. Assuming that the surfaces are in thermodynamic equilibrium with an O2 and H2 gas phase we determine a phase diagram of the lowest-energy surface structures. For a wide range of temperatures and pressures we find that hydrogen will be adsorbed at the surface, preferentially with a coverage of 1/2 monol…
In this work, we combine Density Functional Theory data with a Thermodynamic and a kinetic model to determine the total concentration of hydrogen implanted in the sub-surface of tungsten exposed to a hydrogen flux. The sub-surface hydrogen concentration is calculated given a flux of hydrogen, a temperature of implantation, and the energy of the incoming hydrogen ions as independent variables. This global model is built step by step; an equilibrium between atomic hydrogen within bulk tungsten and a molecular hydrogen gas phase is first considered, and the calculated solubility is compared with …
We report first-principles density functional theory studies of native defects in lithium borohydride (LiBH$_{4}$), a potential material for hydrogen storage. Based on our detailed analysis of the structure, energetics, and migration of lithium-, boron-, and hydrogen-related defects, we propose a specific mechanism for the decomposition and dehydrogenation of LiBH$_{4}$ that involves mass transport mediated by native defects. In this mechanism, LiBH$_{4}$ releases borane (BH$_{3}$) at the surface or interface, leaving the negatively charged hydrogen interstitial (H$_{i}^{-}$) in the material, …
Reversible reaction involving Li amide (LiNH$_{2}$) and Li imide (Li$_{2}$NH) is a potential mechanism for hydrogen storage. Recent synchrotron x-ray diffraction experiments [W. I. David et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 129, 1594 (2007)] suggest that the transformation between LiNH$_{2}$ and Li$_{2}$NH is a bulk reaction that occurs through non-stoichiometric processes and involves the migration of Li$^{+}$ and H$^{+}$ ions. In order to understand the atomistic mechanisms behind these processes, we carry out comprehensive first-principles studies of native point defects and defect complexes in the tw…
Defects such as vacancies and impurities could have profound effects on the transport properties of thermoelectric materials. However, it is usually quite difficult to directly calculate the thermoelectric properties of defect-containing systems via first-principles method since very large supercell is required. In this work, based on the linear response theory and the kernel polynomial method, we present an efficient approach that can help to calculate the thermoelectric transport coefficients of a large system containing millions of atoms at arbitrary chemical potential and temperature. As a…
Structural defects in the molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) monolayer are widely known for strongly altering its properties. Therefore, a deep understanding of these structural defects and how they affect MoS2 electronic properties is of fundamental importance. Here, we report on the incorporation of atomic hydrogen in mono-layered MoS2 to tune its structural defects. We demonstrate that the electronic properties of single layer MoS2 can be tuned from the intrinsic electron (n) to hole (p) doping via controlled exposure to atomic hydrogen at room temperature. Moreover, this hydrogenation process rep…
A reliable description of surfaces structures in a reactive environment is crucial to understand materials functions. We present a first-principles theory of replica-exchange grand-canonical-ensemble molecular dynamics (REGC-MD) and apply it to evaluate phase equilibria of surfaces in reactive gas-phase environment. We identify the different surface phases and locate phase boundaries including triple and critical points. The approach is demonstrated by addressing open questions for the Si(100) surface in contact with a hydrogen atmosphere. In the range from 300 to 1 000 K, we find 25 distinct …
Understanding and predicting the dominant diffusion processes in Cr2O3 is essential to its optimization for anti-corrosion coatings, spintronics, and other applications. Despite significant theoretical effort in modeling defect mediated diffusion in Cr2O3 the correlation with experimentally measured diffusivities remains poor partly due to the insufficient accuracy of the theoretical approaches. Here an attempt to resolve these discrepancies is made through high accuracy density functional theory simulations coupled with grand canonical formalism of defect thermochemistry. In this approach, po…

Based on the van der Waals density functional theory (vdW-DFT)+U scheme, we carry out the ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) study of the interaction dynamics for H$_{2}$ impingement against the stoichiometric PuO$_{2}$(111), the reduced PuO$_{2}$(111), and the stoichiometric $α$-Pu$_{2}$O$_{3}$(111) surfaces. The hydrogen molecular physisorption states, which can not be captured by pure DFT+\textit{U} method, are obtained by employing the vdW-DFT+\textit{U} scheme. We show that except for the weak physisorption, PuO$_{2}$(111) surfaces are so difficult of access that almost all of the H$_{2}…
