In this study we report on the results from emission $^{57}$Fe M${ö}$ssbauer Spectroscopy experiments, using dilute $^{57}$Mn implantation into pristine (TiO$_2$) and hydrogenated anatase held at temperatures between 300-700 K. Results of the electronic structure and local environment are complemented with ab-initio calculations. Upon implantation both Fe$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{3+}$ are observed in pristine anatase, where the latter demonstrates the spin-lattice relaxation. The spectra obtained for hydrogenated anatase show no Fe$^{3+}$ contribution, suggesting that hydrogen acts as a donor. Due to the low threshold, hydrogen diffuses out of the lattice. Thus showing a dynamic behavior on the time scale of the $^{57}$Fe 14.4 keV state. The surrounding oxygen vacancies favor the high-spin Fe$^{2+}$ state. The sample treated at room temperature shows two distinct processes of hydrogen motion. The motion commences with the interstitial hydrogen, followed by switching to the covalently bound state. Hydrogen out-diffusion is hindered by bulk defects, which could cause both processes to overlap. Supplementary UV-Vis and electrical conductivity measurements show an improved electrical conductivity and higher optical absorption after the hydrogenation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at room temperature reveals that the sample hydrogenated at 573 K shows presence of both Ti$^{3+}$ and Ti$^{2+}$ states. This could imply that a significant amount of oxygen vacancies and -OH bonds are present in the samples. Theory suggests that in the anatase sample implanted with Mn(Fe), probes were located near equatorial vacancies as next-nearest-neighbours, whilst a metastable hydrogen configuration is responsible for the annealing behavior.
We have explored the effects of the Li intercalation on the electronic and magnetic properties of transition-metal (TM) doped anatase TiO$_2$. By Li intercalation, Mn-doped TiO$_2$ exhibits the insulator to metal transition. On the other hand, Li-intercalated Fe-doped TiO$_2$ has the insulating ground state for low concentration of Li/Ti=0.067, but the metallic ground state for high concentration of Li/Ti=0.133. We discuss the $n$-type carrier induced ferromagnetism in Li-intercalated TM-doped anatase TiO$_2$. Based on the Li-intercalated TM-doped anatase TiO$_2$, we propose a potential spintr…
We systematically investigated native defects and reconstructions of TiO2 anatase (101) using USPEX and VASP codes. For lightly reduced samples, the coverage of O vacancies at surface depends on its concentration in bulk, while Ti interstitials prefer to dissolve in bulk. Atomic configurations of reconstructed TiO2 anatase (101) structures were given for severe reduced samples at the first time. Increasing the reduction degree, the Fermi level can be modulated in the whole bandgap. For O-rich samples, due to the indirect-to-direct bandgap transition and bandgap narrowing, O interstitials are r…
The optical properties of thermally annealed TiO2 samples depend on their preparation process, and the TiO2 thin films usually exist in the form of anatase or rutile or the mixture of the two phases. The electronic structures and optical properties of anatase and rutile TiO2 are calculated by means of First-principles generalized gradient approximation (GGA) +U approach. By Introducing the Coulomb interactions on 3d orbitals of Ti atom (Ud) and 2p orbitals of O atom (Up), we can reproduce the experimental values of the band gap. The optical properties of anatase and rutile TiO2 are obtained by…
The electronic properties of pentavalent-ion (Nb$^{5+}$, Ta$^{5+}$, and I$^{5+}$) doped anatase and rutile TiO$_2$ are studied using spin-polarized GGA+\emph{U} calculations. Our calculated results indicate that these two phases of TiO$_2$ exhibit different conductive behavior upon doping. For doped anatase TiO$_2$, some up-spin-polarized Ti 3\emph{d} states lie near the conduction band bottom and cross the Fermi level, showing an \emph{n}-type half-metallic character. For doped rutile TiO$_2$, the Fermi level is pinned between two up-spin-polarized Ti 3\emph{d} gap states, showing an insulati…
This letter reports on the magnetic properties of Ti1-xCoxO2 anatase phase nanopowders with different Co contents. It is shown that oxygen vacancies play a fundamental role in promoting the long-range ferromagnetic order in the material studied, in addition to the transition-metal doping. Furthermore, the results allow ruling out the premise of a strict connection between Co clustering and the ferromagnetism observed in the Co:TiO2 anatase system.
The relative energies of the low-pressure rutile, anatase, and brookite polymorphs and the high-pressure columbite polymorph of TiO$_2$ have been calculated as a function of temperature using the diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) method and density functional theory (DFT). The vibrational energies are found to be important on the scale of interest and significant quartic anharmonicity is found in the rutile phase. Static-lattice DFT calculations predict that anatase is lower in energy than rutile, in disagreement with experiment. The accurate description of electronic correlations afforded b…
We use density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate structural models consisting of anatase TiO2(101) slabs covered by reduced overlayers formed by (101) crystallographic shear planes (CSPs). Ab initio thermodynamics supports the stability of these structures under a wide range of experimental conditions. The overlayers are found to have Ti2O3 stoichiometry with a crystal structure different from the known corundum-like Ti2O3 (here denoted α-Ti2O3) phase. DFT calculations predict this new "csp-Ti2O3" phase to be energetically close to α-Ti2O3 and to have also a similar band gap.…
TiO$_2$ anatase doped with Co has been recently reported to exhibit room-temperature ferromagnetism. $Ab$ $initio$ study on substitutional Co doping, however, yielded much larger magnetic moment for Co than experiment. Our calculations based on density-functional theory show that the substitutional Co ions incorporated into TiO$_2$ anatase tend to cluster and then the neighboring interstitial tetrahedral sites become energetically favorable for Co to reside, yielding a local environment more like Co$_3$O$_4$ than CoTiO$_3$. The interstitial Co destroys the spin-polarization of the surrounding …
The efforts in the optimization of the physical and chemical properties related to the photocatalytic efficiency of TiO2 nanoparticles relies mainly on defect engineering strategies, been the structural and the doping the most common ones. The doping of the anatase TiO2 structure with lanthanides elements potentially can turns the TiO2 optical absorption into the visible range increasing drastically its photocatalytic efficiency. Here we show that the processing of TiO2 nanoparticles in oxygen atmosphere and the La doping stabilizes the anatase phase. The La incorporation takes place mainly in…
Thermopower (S) for anatase TiO2 epitaxial films (n3D: 1E17-1E21 /cm3) and the gate voltage (Vg) dependence of S for thin film transistors (TFTs) based on TiO2 films were investigated to clarify the electronic density of states (DOS) around the conduction band bottom. The slope of the |S|-log n3D plots was -20 μV/K, which is an order magnitude smaller than that of semiconductors (-198 μV/K), and the |S| values for the TFTs increased with Vg in the low Vg region, suggesting that the extra tail states are hybridized with the original conduction band bottom.
The effects of $n$-type carrier doping by Li intercalation on magnetism in undoped and Co-doped anatase TiO$_2$ are investigated. We have found that doped $n$-type carriers in TiO$_2$ are localized mainly at Ti sites near the intercalated Li. With increasing the intercalation, local spins are realized at Ti. In the case of Co-doped TiO$_2$, most of the added $n$-type carriers fill the Co 3$d$ bands and the rest are localized at Ti. Therefore, Co magnetic moment vanishes by Li intercalation to have a nonmagnetic ground state.
We report a first-principles study on the geometric, electronic and magnetic properties of V-doped anatase TiO$_{2}$. The DFT+U (Hubbard coefficient) approach predicts semiconductor band structures for Ti$_{1-x}$V$_{x}$O$_{2}$ (x=6.25 and 12.5%), in good agreement with the poor conductivity of samples, while the standard calculation within generalized gradient approximation fails. Theoretical results show that V atoms tend to stay close and result in strong ferromagnetism through superexchange interactions. Oxygen vacancy induced magnetic polaron could produce long-range ferromagnetic interact…
Industrial scale NH3 production is mainly produced by the Haber Bosch process, but it suffers from intensive energy consumption with serious CO2 emission. Electrochemical N2 reduction reaction (NRR) is now used for energy-saving NH3 synthesis, which needs highly efficient electrocatalysts for N2 activation. In this work, we have computationally studied what are main factors for affecting N2 molecule activation and NRR process on VO2c decorated TiO2 (101) surface by changing its structures or electronic features. Furthermore, a promising NRR electrocatalyst is successfully predicted.
We use first-principles calculations to investigate the adsorption and incorporation of non-metal impurities (N, C) at the anatase TiO$_2$(001)-(1$\times$4) reconstructed surface. We analyze in detail the influence of the surface structure and local strain on the impurity binding sites and incorporation pathways and identify important intermediates which facilitate impurity incorporation. We find various subsurface interstitial binding sites and corresponding surface $\rightarrow$ subsurface penetration pathways on the reconstructed surface. This surface also favors the presence of subsurface …
We report first-principles microscopic calculations of the formation energy, electrical activity, and magnetic moment of Co dopants and a variety of native defects in TiO2 anatase. Using these results, we use equilibrium thermodynamics to predict the resulting carrier concentration, the average magnetic moment per Co, and the dominant oxidation state of Co. The predicted values are in good agreement with experiment under the assumption of O-poor growth conditions. In this regime, a substantial fraction of Co dopants occupy interstitial sites as donors. The incomplete compensation of these dono…
We have investigated electronic structures of a room temperature diluted magnetic semiconductor : Co-doped anatase $\rm TiO_{2}$. We have obtained the half-metallic ground state in the local-spin-density approximation(LSDA) but the insulating ground state in the LSDA+$U$+SO incorporating the spin-orbit interaction. In the stoichiometric case, the low spin state of Co is realized with the substantially large orbital moment. However, in the presence of oxygen vacancies near Co, the spin state of Co becomes intermediate. The ferromagnetisms in the metallic and insulating phases are accounted for …
Anatase is a metastable polymorph of TiO$_2$. In contrast to the more widely-studied TiO$_2$ rutile, O vacancies (V$_\mathrm O$'s) are not stable at the anatase (101) surface. Low-temperature STM shows that surface V$_\mathrm O$'s, created by electron bombardment at 105 K, start migrating to subsurface sites at temperatures $\geq$ 200 K. After an initial decrease of the V$_\mathrm O$ density, a temperature-dependent dynamic equilibrium is established where V$_\mathrm O$'s move to subsurface sites and back again, as seen in time-lapse STM images. We estimate that activation energies for subsurf…
Band alignment effects of anatase and rutile nanocrystals in TiO$_2$ powders lead to an electron hole separation, increasing the photo catalytic efficiency of these powders. While size effects and types of possible alignments have been extensively studied, the effect of interface geometries of bonded nanocrystal structures on the alignment is poorly understood. In order to allow conclusive studies of a vast variety of bonded systems in different orientations, we have developed a new density functional tight binding parameter set to properly describe quantum confinement in nanocrystals. Applyin…
TiO$_2$ anatase has its significant importance in energy and environmental research. However, the major drawback of this immensely popular semi-conductor is its large bandgap of 3.2 eV. Several non-metals have been doped experimentally for extending the TiO$_2$ photo-absorption to the visible region. Providing in-depth theoretical guidance to the experimentalists to understand the optical properties of the doped system is therefore extremely important. We report here using state-of-the-art hybrid density functional approach and many body perturbation theory (within the frame work of GW and BSE…
Thin films of Ti1-xCoxO2 (x=0 and 0.03) have been prepared on sapphire substrates by spin-on technique starting from metalorganic precursors. When heat treated in air at 550 and 700 C respectively, these films present pure anatase and rutile structures as shown both by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Optical absorption indicate a high degree of transparency in the visible region. Such films show a very small magnetic moment at 300 K. However, when the anatase and the rutile films are annealed in a vacuum of 1x10-5 Torr at 500 oC and 600 oC respectively, the magnetic moment, at 300 K,…
Knowledge of the molecular frontier levels' alignment in the ground state can be used to predict the photocatalytic activity of an interface. The position of the adsorbate's highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels relative to the substrate's valence band maximum (VBM) in the interface describes the favorability of photogenerated hole transfer from the VBM to the adsorbed molecule. This is a key quantity for assessing and comparing H$_2$O photooxidation activities on two prototypical photocatalytic TiO$_2$ surfaces: anatase (A)-TiO$_2$(101) and rutile (R)-TiO$_2$(110). Using the projec…
Oxygen (O2) adsorbed on metal oxides is important in catalytic oxidation reactions, chemical sensing, and photocatalysis. Strong adsorption requires transfer of negative charge from oxygen vacancies (VOs) or dopants, for example. With scanning tunneling microscopy, we observed, transformed, and, in conjunction with theory, identified the nature of O2 molecules on the (101) surface of anatase (titanium oxide, TiO2) doped with niobium. VOs reside exclusively in the bulk, but we pull them to the surface with a strongly negatively charged scanning tunneling microscope tip. O2 adsorbed as superoxo …
In this work, electronic structure of several doped TiO$_2$ anatase systems is computed using DFT+$U$. Effective masses of charge carriers are also computed to quantify how the dopant atoms perturb the bands of the host anatase material. $U$ is computed systematically for all the dopants using the linear response method rather than using fitting procedures to physically known quantities. A combination of $d$ and $f$ block elements (Nb, Ta, V, Mo, W, Cr, La, Cu, Co and Ce) are considered as dopants. Depending upon the energies of their outer $d$ or $f$ electrons, the dopants are found to form d…
Defects in the surface region of a reducible oxide, as TiO2, have a profound effect on applications, while their nature is very much influenced by the possibility of small polaron formation. Here, we probe rutile (110) and anatase (101) single crystals via high-resolution ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and resolve multiple components of the well-known defect state in the band gap. In rutile, we find two at VBM+2.1 eV and VBM+1.4 eV, which we assign to subsurface polaron traps and vacancy-bound states, respectively, confirming the predicted partial suppression of polaron formation at hi…
The influence of the electric field and electric current on the behavior of oxygen vacancies (VOs) in TiO2 anatase was investigated with Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM). At the anatase (101) surface VOs are not stable; they migrate into the bulk at temperatures above 200 K. Scanning a clean anatase (101) surface at a sample bias greater than +4.3 V results in surface VOs in the scanned area, suggesting that subsurface VOs migrate back to the surface. To test this hypothesis, surface VOs were first created through bombardment with energetic electrons. The sample was then mildly annealed, wh…
Ab-initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the relative stability of anatase and rutile polymorphs of TiO2 were carried using all-electron atomic orbitals methods with local density approximation (LDA). The rutile phase exhibited a moderate margin of stability of ~ 3 meV relative to the anatase phase in pristine material. From computational analysis of the formation energies of Si, Al, Fe and F dopants of various charge states across different Fermi level energies in anatase and in rutile, it was found that the cationic dopants are most stable in Ti substitutional lattice positi…
The Co-doped anatase TiO$_{2}$, a recently discovered room-temperature ferromagnetic insulator, has been studied by the first-principles calculations in the pseudo-potential plane-wave formalism within the local-spin-density approximation (LSDA), supplemented by the full-potential linear augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method. Emphasis is placed on the dependence of its electronic structures and linear optical properties on the Co-doping concentration and oxygen vacancy in the system in order to pursue the origin of its ferromagnetism. In the case of substitutional doping of Co for Ti, our calc…
Titanium dioxide (TiO$_2$) plays a central role in the study of artificial photosynthesis, owing to its ability to perform photocatalytic water splitting. Despite over four decades of intense research efforts in this area, there is still some debate over the nature of the first water monolayer on the technologically-relevant anatase TiO$_2$ (101) surface. In this work we use first-principles calculations to reverse-engineer the experimental high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectra measured for this surface in [Walle et al., J. Phys. Chem. C 115, 9545 (2011)], and find evidence supporting th…
Brookite TiO2 as an active photocatalyst for photoconversion of plastic wastes to acetic acid and simultaneous hydrogen production: Comparison with anatase and rutile
In this work we present an X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy characterization of the local environment of the impurity in room temperature ferromagnetic anatase TiO2 thin films doped with Co, Ni, Cu, or Zn, deposited on LaAlO3 substrate by Pulsed Laser Deposition. It was found that there is a considerable amount of impurity atoms substituting Ti in TiO2 anatase, although the presence of metal transition monoxide clusters can not be discarded. From our results we infer that the observed room temperature ferromagnetism of the samples could be assigned to the metal transition atoms replacing Ti in Ti…
We report the existence of metallic two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) at the (001) and (101) surfaces of bulk-insulating TiO2 anatase due to local chemical doping by oxygen vacancies in the near-surface region. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we find that the electronic structure at both surfaces is composed of two occupied subbands of d_xy orbital character. While the Fermi surface observed at the (001) termination is isotropic, the 2DEG at the (101) termination is anisotropic and shows a charge carrier density three times larger than at the (001) surface. Moreover, we d…
We combined scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experiments with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study dispersed tungsta clusters on anatase TiO$_2$(101). Following two different preparation methods, we found that monomeric WO$_3$ species are the most stable configuration rather than WO$_3$ trimers, (WO$_3$)$_3$. The WO$_3$ monomers form tetrahedral WO$_4$ structures on anatase TiO$_2$(101), with one W$-$O bond and two W$-$O$-$Ti linkages per WO$_3$ monomer. Locally, the WO$_3$ monomers form well-ordered (2$\times$1) structures. The di…
We study the surface and bulk electronic structure of the room-temperature ferromagnet Co:TiO2 anatase films using soft and hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy with probe sensitivities of ~1 nm and ~10 nm, respectively. We obtain direct evidence of metallic Ti$^{3+}$ states in the bulk, which get suppressed to give a surface semiconductor, thus indicating a surface-bulk dichotomy. X-ray absorption and high-sensitivity resonant photoemission spectroscopy reveal Ti$^{3+}$ electrons at the Fermi level (E$_F$) and high-spin Co$^{2+}$ electrons occurring away from E$_F$. The results show the impo…
Oxygen vacancies created in anatase TiO2 by UV photons (80 - 130 eV) provide an effective electron-doping mechanism and induce a hitherto unobserved dispersive metallic state. Angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) reveals that the quasiparticles are large polarons. These results indicate that anatase can be tuned from an insulator to a polaron gas to a weakly correlated metal as a function of doping and clarify the nature of conductivity in this material.
Ab initio calculations using the local spin density approximation and also including the Hubbard $U$ have been performed for three low energy configurations of the interface between LaAlO$_3$ and TiO$_2$-anatase. Two types of interfaces have been considered: LaO/TiO$_2$ and AlO$_2$/TiO, the latter with Ti-termination and therefore a missing oxygen. A slab-geometry calculation was carried out and all the atoms were allowed to relax in the direction normal to the interface. In all the cases considered, the interfacial Ti atom acquires a local magnetic moment and its formal valence is less than +…
"Black" TiO2 has gained increasing interest because of its outstanding properties and promising applications in a wide range of fields. Among the outstanding features of the material is that certain synthesis processes lead to the formation of an intrinsic co-catalytic center and thus enable noble-metal free photocatalytic H2 generation. In this work, we report "grey TiO2" by an appropriate hydrogenation treatment exhibits excellent photocatalytic hydrogen. In this case, by the employment of thermally stable and high-surface-area TiO2 nanoparticles as well as mesoporous particles as the hydrog…
We studied the electronic and atomic structures of anatase TiO2 codoped with Cr and N using hybrid density functional theory calculations. Nonlocal screened Hartree-Fock exchange energy is partially mixed with traditional semilocal exchange part. This not only heals the band gap underestimation but also improves the description of anion/cation-driven impurity states and magnetization of the dopants. Cr and/or N doping modifies the valence and conduction band edges of TiO2 leading to significant band gap reduction. Hence, Cr, N and Cr-N doped TiO2 are promising for enhanced photoactivity.
Understanding native point defects is fundamental in order to comprehend the properties of TiO$_2$ anatase in technological applications. Several first-principles studies have been performed in order to investigate the defect chemistry of this material. The reported values are, however, scattered over a wide range. In this manuscript we perform a comparative study employing different approaches based on semilocal, DFT+$U$ and screened hybrid functionals in order to investigate the dependence of defect properties, such as formation energies and charge transition levels, on the employed computat…
We revisit the most widely investigated and controversial oxide diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS), Co:TiO2, with a new high temperature film growth, and show that the corresponding material is not only an intrinsic DMS ferromagnet, but also supports a percolative mechanism of ferromagnetism. We establish the uniformity of dopant distribution across the film cross section by Z-contrast imaging via scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) at spatial resolution of 0.4 nm and the oxidized 2+ valence state of cobalt by x-ray absorption spectro…
We carried out density functional theory calculations to model the electronic structure and the magnetic interactions in copper doped anatase and rutile titanium dioxide in order to shed light on the potential of these systems as magnetic oxides using different density functional schemes. In both polymorphs copper dopant was found to be most stable in substitutional lattice positions. Ferromagnetism is predicted to be stable well above room temperature with long range interactions prevailing in the anatase phase while the rutile phase exhibits only short range superexchange interaction among n…
Two-dimensional (2D) metallic states induced by oxygen vacancies at oxide surfaces and interfaces provide new opportunities for the development of advanced applications, but the ability to control the behavior of these states is still limited. We used Angle Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy combined with density functional theory to study the reactivity of states induced by the oxygen vacancies at the (001)-(1x4) surface of anatase TiO2, where both 2D metallic and deeper lying in-gap states (IGs) are observed. Remarkably, the two states exhibit very different evolution when the surface is ex…
The improvement of Li-ion battery performance requires development of models that capture the essential physics and chemistry in Li-ion battery electrode materials. In this paper a novel electrochemical phase-field model is presented that captures the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of lithium-insertion in TiO$_2$-anatase, a well-known and intensively studied Li-ion battery electrode material. Previous experimental work on lithiated anatase TiO$_2$ provided all parameters necessary for the phase-field simulations, giving the opportunity to gain fundamental insight in the lithiation of ana…
Interface of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) and high-k dielectric transition metal oxides (TMO) had triggerred umpteen discourses due to the indubitable impact of TMO in reducing the contact resistances and restraining the Fermi-level pinning for the metal-TMDC contacts. In the present work, we focus on the unresolved tumults of large-area TMDC/TMO interfaces, grown by adopting different techniques. Here, on a pulsed laser deposited (PLD) MoS2 thin film, a layer of TiO2 is grown by using both atomic layer deposition (ALD) and PLD. These two different techniques emanate TiO2 layers with…
A combination of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy/Spectroscopy and Density Functional Theory (DFT+U) is used to characterize excess electrons in TiO$_2$ rutile and anatase, two prototypical materials with identical chemical composition but different crystal lattices. In rutile, excess electrons can localize at any lattice Ti atom, forming a small polaron, which can easily hop to neighboring sites. In contrast, electrons in anatase prefer a free-carrier state, and can only be trapped near oxygen vacancies or form shallow donor states bound to Nb dopants. The present study conclusively explains the…
Adsorption of CO$_2$ on a semiconductor surface is a prerequisite for its photocatalytic reduction. Owing to superior photocorrosion resistance, nontoxicity and suitable band edge positions, TiO$_2$ is considered to be the most efficient photocatalyst for facilitating redox reactions. However, due to the absence of adequate understanding of the mechanism of adsorption, the CO$_2$ conversion efficiency on TiO$_2$ surfaces has not been maximized. While anatase TiO$_2$ (101) is the most stable facet, the (001) surface is more reactive and it has been experimentally shown that the stability can be…
We perform first-principles calculations to investigate the band structure, density of states, optical absorption, and the imaginary part of dielectric function of Cu, Ag, and Au-doped anatase TiO2 in 72 atoms systems. The electronic structure results show that the Cu incorporation can lead to the enhancement of d states near the uppermost of valence band, while the Ag and Au doping cause some new electronic states in band gap of TiO2. Meanwhile, it is found that the visible optical absorptions of Cu, Ag, and Au-doped TiO2, are observed by analyzing the results of optical properties,.which loc…
In this paper, I demonstrate a density functional theory plus dynamical mean field theory study on the electronic properties of doped $TiO_2$ rutile as well as another tetragonal phase anatase with oxygen vacancy. The density of states and optical properties have been obtained from the electronic structure applying screened hybrid exchange correlation density functionals. All the single-particle excitations are treated within the dynamical mean field theory for independent quasiparticles. For optical properties, excitations are considered by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation for Coulomb corr…
This topical review focuses on the recently active debate on the band alignment between two polymorphs of TiO$_2$, rutile and anatase. A summary is given to the popular methods for measurement and calculation of band alignment between materials. We point out, through examination of recently experimental and theoretical reports, that the outstanding discrepancy in the band alignment between two TiO$_2$ phases is attributed to factors that influence band alignment rather than needs a definite answer of which band alignment is right. According to an important factor, the presence of an interface,…
Titanium dioxide materials have been studied intensively and extensively due to photocatalytic applications. A long-standing open question is the energy band alignment of rutile and anatase TiO2 phases, which can affect the photocatalytic process in the composite system. There are basically two contradictory viewpoints about the alignment of these two TiO2 phases supported by respective experiments: 1) straddling type and 2) staggered type. In this work, our DFT plus U calculations find that the perfect rutile (110) and anatase (101) surfaces have the straddling type band alignment, whereas th…
Magneto-optical spectroscopy of a transparent ferromagnetic semiconductor, anatase TiO2 doped with Co, is carried out at room temperature. A large magneto-optical response with ferromagnetic field dependence is observed throughout from ultraviolet to visible range and increases with increasing Co content or carrier concentration. The magnitude of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) per unit thickness has a peak around the absorption edge such a huge value of ~10400 degree/cm at 3.57 eV for a 10 mol% Co-doped specimen. Although the results are not sufficient to prove that the ferromagnetism is in…
Water absorption and dissociation processes on pristine low-index TiO$_2$ interfaces are important but poorly understood outside the well-studied anatase (101) and rutile (110). To understand these, we construct three sets of machine learning potentials that are simultaneously applicable to various TiO$_2$ surfaces, based on three density-functional-theory approximations. We compute the water dissociation free energies on seven pristine TiO$_2$ surfaces, and predict that anatase (100), anatase (110), rutile (001), and rutile (011) surfaces favor water dissociation, anatase (101) and rutile (10…
We have used density functional theory calculations based on the projector augmented wave method to investigate the electronic structure of Au-incorporated anatase TiO$_2$(001) surface. Due to the coordination with several level oxygens, Au atoms can be encapsulated inside TiO$_2$ slab. Au is adsorbed over the surface Ti--O bond, so called the bridge site on anatase TiO$_2$(001)--1$\times$1 surface. However, for 0.25 ML coverage, Au atoms energetically prefer to stay at 0.64 Å above the midpoint of the two surface oxygens which is significantly closer to the surface layer. When implanted insid…
Electronic properties and atomic structures of W, N, S, W/N, and W/S dopings of anatase TiO_2 have been systematically investigated using the density functional theory (DFT). The exchange and correlation effects have been treated with Heyd, Scuseria and Ernzerhof (HSE) hybrid functional. Mixing traditional semi-local and non-local screened Hartree-Fock (HF) exchange energies, the HSE method corrects the band gap and also improves the description of anion/cation derived gap states. Enhanced charge carrier dynamics, observed for W/N codoped titania, can partly be explained by the passivative mod…
The quasiparticle electronic structure and optical excitation of anatase TiO$_2$ is determined within the framework of many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) by combining the $G_0W_0$ method and the Bethe-Salpeter Equation (BSE). A modified version of the HSE06 screened hybrid functional, that includes 20\% exact Fock exchange (HSE06(20)) as opposed to 25\% in the standard HSE06 functional, is used to set up the starting Hamiltonian for $G_0W_0$+BSE calculations. The HSE06(20) functional accurately predicts the ground state electronic band structure. BSE calculations based on data from $G_0W_0$+…
TiO$_2$ and SrTiO$_3$ are well known materials in the field of photocatalysis due to their exceptional electronic structure, high chemical stability, non-toxicity and low cost. However, owing to the wide band gap, these can be utilized only in the UV region. Thus, it's necessary to expand their optical response in visible region by reducing their band gap through doping with metals, nonmetals or the combination of different elements, while retaining intact the photocatalytic efficiency. We report here, the codoping of a metal and a nonmetal in anatase TiO$_2$ and SrTiO$_3$ for efficient photoc…
Oxide based diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) materials have been a subject of increasing interest due to reports of room temperature ferromagnetism in several systems and their potential use in the development of spintronic devices. However, concerns on the stability of the magnetic properties of different DMS systems have been raised. Their magnetic moment is often unstable, vanishing with a characteristic decay time of weeks or months, which precludes the development of real applications. This paper reports on the ferromagnetic properties of two-year-aged Ti1-xCoxO2-δ reduced anatase nan…
Copper dopants are varyingly reported to enhance photocatalytic activity at titanium dioxide surfaces through uncertain mechanisms. In order to interpret how copper doping might alter the performance of titanium dioxide photocatalysts in aqueous media we applied density functional theory methods to simulate surface units of doped anatase (101) planes. By including van der Waals interactions, we consider the energetics of adsorbed water at anatase surfaces in pristine and copper doped systems. Simulation results indicate that copper dopant at anatase (101) surfaces is most stable in a 2+ oxidat…
Engineering the electronic band structure of two-dimensional electron liquids (2DELs) confined at the surface or interface of transition metal oxides is key to unlocking their full potential. Here we describe a new approach to tailoring the electronic structure of an oxide surface 2DEL demonstrating the lateral modulation of electronic states with atomic scale precision on an unprecedented length scale comparable to the Fermi wavelength. To this end, we use pulsed laser deposition to grow anatase TiO2 films terminated by a (1 x 4) in-plane surface reconstruction. Employing photo-stimulated che…
