Dynamical gluon mass generation has been traditionally plagued with seagull divergences, and all regularization procedures proposed over the years yield finite but scheme-dependent gluon masses. In this work we show how such divergences can be eliminated completely by virtue of a characteristic identity, valid in dimensional regularization. The ability to trigger the aforementioned identity hinges crucially on the particular Ansatz employed for the three-gluon vertex entering into the Schwinger-Dyson equation governing the gluon propagator. The use of the appropriate three-gluon vertex brings about an additional advantage: one obtains two separate (but coupled) integral equations, one for the effective charge and one for the gluon mass. This system of integral equations has a unique solution, which unambiguously determines these two quantities. Most notably, the effective charge freezes in the infrared, and the gluon mass displays power-law running in the ultraviolet, in agreement with earlier considerations.
We present a generalized theoretical framework for dealing with the important issue of dynamical mass generation in Yang-Mills theories, and, in particular, with the infrared finiteness of the gluon propagators, observed in a multitude of recent lattice simulations. Our analysis is manifestly gauge-invariant, in the sense that it preserves the transversality of the gluon self-energy, and gauge-independent, given that the conclusions do not depend on the choice of the gauge-fixing parameter within the linear covariant gauges. The central construction relies crucially on the subtle interplay bet…
The gluon mass generation is a purely non-perturbative effect, and the natural framework to study it in the continuum are the Schwinger-Dyson equations (SDEs) of the theory. At the level of the SDEs the generation of such a mass is associated with the existence of infrared finite solutions for the gluon propagator. From the theoretical point of view, the dynamical gluon mass generation has been traditionally plagued with seagull divergences. In this work, we will review how such divergences can be eliminated completely by virtue of a characteristic identity, valid in dimensional regularization…
The study of dynamical gluon mass generation at the level of Schwinger-Dyson equation involves a delicate interplay between various field-theoretic mechanisms The underlying local gauge invariance remains intact by resorting to the well-known Schwinger mechanism, which is assumed to be realized by longitudinally coupled bound state poles, produced by the non-perturbative dynamics of the theory. These poles are subsequently included into the Schwinger-Dyson equation of the gluon propagator through the three-gluon vertex, generating a non-vanishing gluon mass, which, however, is expressed in ter…
In this article we study the general structure and special properties of the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the gluon propagator constructed with the pinch technique, together with the question of how to obtain infrared finite solutions, associated with the generation of an effective gluon mass. Exploiting the known all-order correspondence between the pinch technique and the background field method, we demonstrate that, contrary to the standard formulation, the non-perturbative gluon self-energy is transverse order-by-order in the dressed loop expansion, and separately for gluonic and ghost con…
Recent perturbative calculation of quasi gluon distribution function at one-loop level shows the existence of extra linear ultraviolet divergences in the cut-off scheme. We employ the auxiliary field approach, and study the renormalization of gluon operators. The non-local gluon operator can mix with new operators under renormalization, and the linear divergences in quasi distribution function can be into the newly introduced operators. After including the mixing, we find the improved quasi gluon distribution functions contain only logarithmic divergences, and thus can be used to extract the g…
Gluon amplitudes at most-subleading order in the $1/N$ expansion share a remarkable simplicity with graviton amplitudes: collinear divergences are completely absent in both and, as a consequence, their full IR behavior arises from soft gluon/graviton exchange among the external states. In this paper we study the effect of all-loop IR divergences of celestial most-subleading color gluon amplitudes and their similarities with the celestial gravity case. In particular, a simple celestial exponentiation formula for the dipole part can be written. We also analize how this exponentiation is modified…
We present a pedagogical overview of the nonperturbative mechanism that endows gluons with a dynamical mass. This analysis is performed based on pure Yang-Mills theories in the Landau gauge, within the theoretical framework that emerges from the combination of the pinch technique with the background field method. In particular, we concentrate on the Schwinger-Dyson equation satisfied by the gluon propagator and examine the necessary conditions for obtaining finite solutions within the infrared region. The role of seagull diagrams receives particular attention, as do the identities that enforce…
We review recent analytic and numerical results concerning the confinement scenario in Coulomb gauge. We then consider a local, renormalizable, BRST-invariant action for QCD in Coulomb gauge that contains auxiliary bose and fermi ghost fields and sources. When the auxiliary fields are integrated out, one obtains the standard Coulomb gauge action with a cut-off at the Gribov horizon. We use the local formulation to calculate the leading correction to the Stefan-Boltzmann equation of state at high temperature due to the cut-off at the Gribov horizon. It is of order $g^6$, which is precisely the …
We derive a compact all-loop-order expression for the IR-divergent part of the N=4 SYM four-gluon amplitude, which includes both planar and all subleading-color contributions, based on the assumption that the higher-loop soft anomalous dimension matrices are proportional to the one-loop soft anomalous dimension matrix, as has been recently conjectured. We also consider the Regge limit of the four-gluon amplitude, and we present evidence that the leading logarithmic growth of the subleading-color amplitudes is less severe than that of the planar amplitudes. We examine possible 1/N^2 corrections…
In the present work we discuss certain characteristic features encoded in some of the fundamental QCD Green's functions, whose origin can be traced back to the nonperturbative masslessness of the ghost field, in the Landau gauge. Specifically, the ghost loops that contribute to these Green's functions display infrared divergences, akin to those encountered in the perturbative treatment, in contradistinction to the gluonic loops, whose perturbative divergences are tamed by the dynamical generation of an effective gluon mass. In d=4, the aforementioned divergences are logarithmic, thus causing a…
We convincingly argue that the true dynamical and gauge structures of the QCD ground state are much more complicated than its Lagrangian exact gauge symmetry supposes to be. The dynamical source of these complications has been identified with the tadpole/seagull term, which renormalized version called, {\sl the mass gap}. It is explicitly present in the full gluon self-energy. The true dynamical role of the mass gap was hidden in the QCD ground state. To disclose it the splintering between the transverse conditions for the full gluon self-energy and its subtracted counterpart has been derived.…
We revisit the treatment of spurious ultraviolet divergences in the equation of motion of the gluon propagator caused by a momentum cutoff and the resulting violation of gauge invariance. With present continuum studies of the gluon propagator from its Dyson-Schwinger equation reaching the level of quantitatively accurate descriptions, it becomes increasingly important to understand how to subtract these spurious divergences in an unambiguous way. Here we propose such a method. It is based entirely on the asymptotic perturbative behavior of the QCD Green's functions without affecting non-pertur…
We show that QCD observables defined as infrared- and collinear-safe, according to the usual Sterman-Weinberg criteria, can nevertheless be infinite at accessible points inside phase space, to any finite order of perturbation theory. Infrared finiteness is restored after resummation of divergent terms to all orders. The resulting characteristic structure, which we call a Sudakov shoulder, represents an interesting new class of QCD predictions.
The transport properties of the quark-gluon plasma is important both from the point of view of the astrophysical systems and the heavy ion collisions. Therefore, accurate calculations of the elastic scattering cross-sections of $qq' \to qq'$ and $ q\qbar' \to q\qbar'$ processes are required. At the tree-diagram level exchange of massless gluons leads to divergent cross sections for such processes. An effective way to remove the infrared divergence is to introduce a Debye mass as an infrared regulator into the gluon propagator for the thermal gluons. In this work we find that at the two-gluon e…
We calculate gluon self-energy using quark energy projectors in a general quark-gluon plasma. By separating the quark field into a positive- and a negative-energy mode, the quark loop constructed with the same mode is always convergent, and the divergence appears only in the mixed loop with different modes and is medium independent. After removing the divergence in vacuum, we obtain the one-loop gluon self-energy at finite temperature, chemical potential and quarks mass without approximation. With the method of quark loop resummation, we calculate non-perturbatively the gluon Debye mass and th…
Due to the nonperturbative masslessness of the ghost field, ghost loops that contribute to gluon Green's functions in the Landau gauge display infrared divergences, akin to those one would encounter in a conventional perturbative treatment. This is in sharp contrast with gluon loops, in which the perturbative divergences are tamed by the dynamical generation of a gluon mass acting as an effective infrared cutoff. In this paper, after reviewing the full nonperturbative origin of this divergence in the two-gluon sector, we discuss its implications for the three- and four-gluon sector, showing in…
We study the production of isolated photons in $e^+e^-$ annihilation and give the proof of the all-order factorization of the collinear singularities. These singularities are absorbed in the standard fragmentation functions of partons into a photon, while the effects of the isolation are consistently included in the short-distance cross section. We compute this cross section at order $\as$ and show that it contains large double logarithms of the isolation parameters. We explain the physical origin of these logarithms and discuss the possibility to resum them to all orders in $\as$.
We study the unpolarized gluon quasidistribution function in the nucleon at one loop level in the large momentum effective theory. For the quark quasidistribution, power law ultraviolet divergences arise in the cut-off scheme and an important observation is that they all are subjected to Wilson lines. However for the gluon quasidistribution function, we first point out that the linear ultraviolet divergences also exist in the real diagram which is not connected to any Wilson line. We then study the one loop corrections to parton distribution functions in both cut-off scheme and dimensional reg…
We present the calculation at next-to-leading order (NLO) in alpha_s of the fragmentation function of a gluon into heavy quarkonium in the color-octet spin-singlet S-wave channel. To calculate the real NLO corrections, we adapt a subtraction scheme introduced by Frixione, Kunszt, and Signer. Ultraviolet and infrared divergences in the real NLO corrections are calculated analytically by evaluating the phase-space integrals of the subtraction terms using dimensional regularization. The subtracted phase-space integrals are then evaluated in 4 space-time dimensions. The divergences in the virtual …
We present the O(alphas^4) virtual QCD corrections to gluon-gluon scattering due to the self-interference of the one-loop amplitude. We give analytic expressions renormalised in the MSbar scheme and work in conventional dimensional regularisation. We write the structure of the infrared divergences from direct Feynman diagram evaluation in terms of the Catani formalism for infrared divergences. Formulae for the finite remainder are given in terms of logarithms that are real in the physical region. These results, together with those previously obtained for quark-quark and quark-gluon scattering …
We study the properties of the cross section for two-gluon production in heavy-light ion collisions derived in our previous paper on the subject in the saturation/Color Glass Condensate framework. Concentrating on the energy and geometry dependence of the corresponding correlation functions we find that the two-gluon correlator is a much slower function of the center-of-mass energy than the one- and two-gluon production cross sections. The geometry dependence of the correlation function leads to stronger azimuthal near- and away-side correlations in the tip-on-tip U+U collisions than in the si…
At small momentum transfer, the quark-gluon scattering cross section dσ/dt has a power-law divergence in the backward scattering region where the outgoing quark is nearly collinear to the incoming gluon. In this Regge limit |t|<< s, the leading behavior of the 2 2 amplitude can be described by the exchange of Glauber quarks. In Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) at leading power, Glauber quark exchange is given by five non-local Glauber quark operators, of which only one is generated at tree-level. We show that at leading power the QCD amplitude for quark-gluon backscattering at one-loop c…
We use a factorization scheme analogous to one proposed for single inclusive forward hadron production to factorize the soft gluon divergence present in the deep inelastic scattering cross sections in the dipole picture at next-to-leading order (NLO). We show numerically that in this carefully constructed scheme it is possible to obtain meaningful results for the DIS cross sections at NLO, and so we are able to quantitatively study the recently derived NLO corrections to the DIS cross sections. We find that the NLO corrections can be significant and sensitive to the details of the factorizatio…
We present analytic forms of three-loop four-gluon planar amplitudes in pure Yang-Mills theory in this letter. Gauge invariant bases and a set of proper master integrals are chosen such that the amplitudes are explicitly invariant under cyclic permutations of external particles. The $D$-dimensional unitarity method and integration-by-parts reductions with cut conditions are performed to determine the coefficients of the master integrals. Helicity amplitudes in the conventional dimension regularization scheme are obtained by setting gauge invariant bases to helicity configurations. After renorm…
In three dimensions, the gluon condensate of pure SU(3) gauge theory has ultraviolet divergences up to 4-loop level only. By subtracting the corresponding terms from lattice measurements of the plaquette expectation value and extrapolating to the continuum limit, we extract the finite part of the gluon condensate in lattice regularization. Through a change of regularization scheme to MSbar and (inverse) dimensional reduction, this result would determine the first non-perturbative coefficient in the weak-coupling expansion of hot QCD pressure.
We present the first calculation at next-to-leading order (NLO) in $α_s$ of a fragmentation function into quarkonium whose form at leading order is a nontrivial function of $z$, namely the fragmentation function for a gluon into a spin-singlet S-wave state at leading order in the relative velocity. To calculate the real NLO corrections, we introduce a new subtraction scheme that allows the phase-space integrals to be evaluated in 4 dimensions. We extract all ultraviolet and infrared divergences in the real NLO corrections analytically by calculating the phase-space integrals of the subtraction…
The basic box and phase space integrals needed to compute at second order the three-jet decay rate of the Z-boson into massive quarks are presented in this paper. Dimensional Regularization is used to regularize the infrared divergences that appear in intermediate steps. Finally, the cancellation of these divergences among the virtual and the real contributions is showed explicitly.
Light cone perturbation theory has become an essential tool to calculate cross sections for various small-$x$ dilute-dense processes such as deep inelastic scattering and forward proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions. Here we set out to do one loop calculations in an explicit helicity basis in the four dimensional helicity scheme. As a first process we calculate light cone wave function for one gluon emission to one-loop order in Hamiltonian perturbation theory on the light front. We regulate ultraviolet divergences with transverse dimensional regularization and soft divergences with usi…
Gluon, ghost, and quark propagators are computed in the Schwinger-Dyson formalism. The full set of one-loop and two-loop contributions to the gap equations are evaluated for the first time. A new and efficient method for dealing with quadratic divergences is presented and a consistent renormalization method is proposed. We find that the two-loop contribution to the propagators is subleading, good fits to lattice data are possible, and reliable vertex models are important to obtaining desired ultraviolet, infrared, and gauge-symmetric behavior.
We show that the well-known divergence of the perturbative expansion of resummed results for processes such as deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan in the soft limit can be treated by Borel resummation. The divergence in the Borel inversion can be removed by the inclusion of suitable higher twist terms. This provides us with an alternative to the standard 'minimal prescription' for the asymptotic summation of the perturbative expansion, and it gives us some handle on the role of higher twist corrections in the soft resummation region.
We compute the amplitudes for non-leptonic annihilation decays of $B$ mesons into two particles within the pQCD collinear approach. The end point divergences are regulated with the help of an infrared finite gluon propagator characterized by a non-perturbative dynamical gluon mass consistent with recent lattice simulations. The divergences at twist-3 are regulated by a dynamical quark mass. Our results fit quite well the existent data of $B^0\to D_s^-K^+$ and $B^0\to D_s^{-*}\bar{K}^+$ for the expected range of dynamical gluon masses. We also make predictions for the rare decays $\bar{B}^0\to …
We calculate of the one- and two-point correlation functions of the energy density and the divergence of the Chern-Simons current in the nonequilibrium Glasma state formed in a high-energy nuclear collision. We show that the latter depends on the difference of the total and linearly polarized gluon transverse momentum distributions. Since the divergence of the Chern-Simons current provides the source of axial charge, we infer information about the statistical properties of axial charge production at early times. We further develop a simple phenomenological model to characterize axial charge di…
We demonstrate the QCD factorization for inclusive hadron production in $pA$ collisions in the saturation formalism at one-loop order, with explicit calculation of both real and virtual gluon radiation diagrams. The collinear divergences associated with the incoming parton distribution of the nucleon and the outgoing fragmentation function of the final state hadron, as well as the rapidity divergence with small-$x$ dipole gluon distribution of the nucleus are factorized into the splittings of the associated parton distribution and fragmentation functions and the energy evolution of the dipole …
The variational approach to QCD in Coulomb gauge developed previously by the Tübingen group is improved by enlarging the space of quark trial vacuum wave functionals through a new Dirac structure in the quark-gluon coupling. Our ansatz for the quark vacuum wave functional ensures that all linear divergences cancel in the quark gap equation resulting from the minimization of the energy calculated to two-loop order. The logarithmic divergences are absorbed in a renormalized coupling which is adjusted to reproduce the phenomenological value of the quark condensate. We also unquench the gluon prop…
The BRST quartet mechanism is briefly reviewed. A special emphasis is given to the distinction of perturbative versus non-perturbative quartets. The field contents of the non-perturbative BRST quartets generated by transverse gluons or quarks in Landau gauge are presented. Corresponding truncated Bethe-Salpeter equations for the respective first daughter and second parent states are derived. It is discussed in which sense these equations provide evidence for the existence of bound states as daughter states in non-perturbative BRST quartets. It is noted that within the scaling solution of funct…
The three-gluon vertex is a basic object of interest in nonabelian gauge theory. It contains important structural information, in particular on infrared divergences, and also figures prominently in the Schwinger-Dyson equations. At the one-loop level, it has been calculated and analyzed by a number of authors. Here we use the worldline formalism to unify the calculations of the scalar, spinor and gluon loop contributions to the one-loop vertex, leading to an extremely compact representation. The SUSY - related sum rule found by Binger and Brodsky follows from an off-shell extension of the Bern…

In this paper we study the nonperturbative structure of the SU(3) four-gluon vertex in the Landau gauge, concentrating on contributions quadratic in the metric. We employ an approximation scheme where "one-loop" diagrams are computed using fully dressed gluon and ghost propagators, and tree-level vertices. When a suitable kinematical configuration depending on a single momentum scale $p$ is chosen, only two structures emerge: the tree-level four-gluon vertex, and a tensor orthogonal to it. A detailed numerical analysis reveals that the form factor associated with this latter tensor displays a …
Endpoint divergences in the convolution integrals appearing in next-to-leading-power factorization theorems prevent a straightforward application of standard methods to resum large logarithmic power-suppressed corrections in collider physics. We study the power-suppressed configuration of the thrust distribution in the two-jet region, where a gluon-initiated jet recoils against a quark-antiquark pair. With the aid of operatorial endpoint factorization conditions, we derive a factorization formula where the individual terms are free from endpoint divergences and can be written in terms of renor…
The BRST quartet mechanism in infrared Landau gauge QCD is investigated. Based on the observed positivity violation for transverse gluons $A_{\mathrm {tr}}$ the field content of the non-perturbative BRST quartet generated by $A_{\mathrm {tr}}$ is derived. To identify the gluon's BRST-daughter state as well as the Faddeev-Popov--charge conjugated second parent state, a truncated Bethe-Salpeter equation for the gluon-ghost bound state in the adjoint colour representation is derived and studied. This equation is found to be compatible with the so-called scaling solutions of functional approaches.…
We investigate the Glauber divergences in nonfactorizable annihilation amplitudes for two-body hadronic heavy meson decays in the $k_T$ factorization theorem at one-loop level. These divergences can be absorbed into the Glauber factors in the dominant kinematic regions of small parton momenta, which modify the interference between a nonfactorizable annihilation amplitude and other amplitudes by rotating it with a phase. We postulate that only the Glauber effect associated with a pion is significant, due to its special role as a $q\bar q$ bound state and as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson simult…
Correlation functions provide information on the properties of mesons in vacuum and of hot nuclear matter. In this Letter, we present a new method to derive a well-defined spectral representation for correlation functions. Combining this method with the quark gap equation and the inhomogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation in the rainbow-ladder approximation, we calculate in-vacuum masses of light mesons and the electrical conductivity of the quark-gluon plasma. The analysis can be extended to other observables of strong-interaction systems.
We calculate the impact factor coupling a virtual photon to a gluon via a massive quark-antiquark pair at LL order, but with the imposition of the correct gluon kinematics. Exact analytical results are presented in triple Mellin space with respect to scaled Bjorken x, gluon transverse momentum and heavy quark mass. The application of these results to the calculation of approximate NLL coefficient functions needed to relate structure functions to the BFKL gluon is presented. The NLL effects with running coupling are seen to lead to a suppression of the small x divergence when compared with the …
Higgs decay using an effective Higgs-Yang-Mills interaction in terms of a dimension five operator as well as usual QCD interactions is revisited in the context of Implicit Regularization (IReg) and compared with conventional dimensional regularization (CDR), four dimensional helicity (FDH) and dimensional reduction (DRED) schemes. The decay rate for $H \rightarrow gg(g)$ is calculated in this strictly four-dimensional set-up to $α_s^3$ order in the strong coupling. Moreover we include joint processes that contribute at the same perturbative order in the real emission channels consisting of 3 g…
Gluon parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the proton can be calculated directly on Euclidean lattices using large momentum effective theory (LaMET). To realize this goal, one has to find renormalized gluon quasi-PDFs in which power divergences and operator mixing are thoroughly understood. For the unpolarized distribution, we identify four independent quasi-PDF correlators that can be multiplicatively renormalized on the lattice. Similarly, the helicity distribution can be derived from three independent multiplicatively renormalizable quasi-PDFs. We provide a LaMET factorization formula fo…
A non-linear Boltzmann equation describing the time evolution of a partonic system in the central rapidity region after a heavy ion collision is solved numerically. A particular model of the collinear logarithmic divergences due to small angle scattering is employed in the numerical solution. The system is followed until it reaches kinetic equilibrium where the equilibration time, temperature and chemical potential are determined for both RHIC and LHC.
The gluon recombination functions in the twist-4 QCD evolution equations are studied at the leading logarithmic approximation using both the covariant and non-covariant methods. We justify that the infrared singularities in the twist-4 coefficient functions impede us to simply separate the QCD evolution kernels from the coefficient functions at the equivalent particle approximation. In particulary, we point out that the gluon recombination functions in the GLR-MQ evolution equation are unavailable. The methods avoiding the IR divergences are discussed, which can be used in the derivations of t…
We study the necessary conditions for obtaining infrared finite solutions from the Schwinger-Dyson equation governing the dynamics of the gluon propagator. The equation in question is set up in the Feynman gauge of the background field method, thus capturing a number of desirable features. Most notably, and in contradistinction to the standard formulation, the gluon self-energy is transverse order-by-order in the dressed loop expansion, and separately for gluonic and ghost contributions. Various subtle field-theoretic issues, such as renormalization group invariance and regularization of quadr…
We describe the gluon plasma in zeroth order as a gas of free quasi-particles with a temperature-independent dispersion relation of Gribov type, $E(k) = \sqrt{k^2 + {M^4 \over k^2}}$, that results from the restriction of the physical state space to the Gribov region. The effective mass ${M^2 \over k}$ controls infrared divergences of finite-temperature perturbation theory. The equation of state of this gas is calculated and compared with numerical lattice data. At high temperature $T$ there are power corrections to the Stefan-Boltzmann law that are of relative order $1/T^3$ for pressure and $1…
