We present a theory of neutrino interactions with nuclei aimed at the description of the partial cross-sections, namely quasi-elastic and multi-nucleon emission, coherent and incoherent single pion production. For this purpose, we use the theory of nuclear responses treated in the random phase approximation, which allows a unified description of these channels. It is particularly suited for the coherent pion production where collective effects are important whereas they are moderate in the other channels. We also study the evolution of the neutrino cross-sections with the mass number from carbon to calcium. We compare our approach to the available neutrino experimental data on carbon. We put a particular emphasis on the multi-nucleon channel, which at present is not easily distinguishable from the quasi-elastic events. This component turns out to be quite relevant for the interpretation of experiments (K2K, MiniBooNE, SciBooNE). It can account in particular for the unexpected behavior of the quasi-elastic cross-section.
The nonlinear model of pionic condensate in nuclei by G. Preparata can be efficiently verified by investigation of the quasielastic knockout process of pions out of nuclei by high energy electrons. First, a momentum distribution (MD) of the collective pions has a bright maximum at q=0.3 Gev.Second the excitation spectrum of a recoil nucleus is concentrated at low energies E lesser than 1MeV. The results for the pion knockout from mesonic clouds of individual nucleons are absolutely different. The latter results are presented both for pion and rho-meson clouds localized on nucleons.
Electro-production of pions and kaons at the kinematics of quasi-elastic knockout (which is well known in the physics of atomic nucleus and corresponds to the $t$-pole diagram) is proposed for obtaining their momentum distribution (MD) in various channels of virtual decay $N \to B+π$, $B=N$, $Δ$, $N^*$, $N^{**}$, and $N \to Y+K$, $Y=Λ$, $Σ$. It is a powerful tool for investigation of a quark microscopic picture of the meson cloud in the nucleon. A model of scalar $q \bar{q}$ ($^3P_0$) fluctuation in the non-trivial QCD vacuum is used to calculate pion and kaon momentum distributions (MD) in th…
[Background] The neutrino-nucleus ($νA$) cross section is a major source of systematic uncertainty in neutrino-oscillation studies. A precise $νA$ scattering model, in which multinucleon effects are incorporated, is pivotal for an accurate interpretation of the data. [Purpose] In $νA$ interactions, meson-exchange currents (MECs) can induce two-nucleon ($2N$) knockout from the target nucleus, resulting in a two-particle two-hole (2p2h) final state. They also affect single nucleon ($1N$) knockout reactions, yielding a one-particle one-hole (1p1h) final state. Both channels affect the inclusive s…
The momentum distributions of pions and $ρ$-mesons in the nucleon are extracted from experiment. Perspectives of the quark microscopic theory of mesonic cloud are outlined.
We present a model for neutrino-nucleus scattering in the energy region relevant for present and forthcoming neutrino-oscillation experiments. The model is based on the RPA treatment of the nuclear responses in the quasi-elastic and Delta-resonance region. It includes also in a phenomenological way nucleon knock-out. It aims at the description, within a single framework, of several final state channels i.e. quasi-elastic, incoherent and coherent one-pion production and two- or several-nucleon knock-out.
Incoherent photoproduction of pions on the deuteron in the Delta(1232) resonance region is studied, where besides the impulse approximation complete two-body rescattering in the nucleon-nucleon and pion-nucleon final state subsystems is included.
Within the multiple scattering formulation, the incoherent pion production in neutrino-deuteron reactions at energies near the $Δ(1232)$ resonance is investigated. The calculations include an impulse term and one-loop contributions from nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) and pion-nucleon ($πN$) final state interactions. The input amplitudes of $πN$ scattering and electroweak pion production reaction on nucleon are generated from a dynamical model which describes very extensive data of $πN$ scattering and both the electromagnetic and the weak pion production reactions on the nucleon. The $NN$ scattering am…
We have extended our model for charged current neutrino-nucleus interactions to neutral current reactions. For the elementary neutrino-nucleon interaction, we take into account quasielastic scattering, Delta excitation and the excitation of the resonances in the second resonance region. Our model for the neutrino-nucleus collisions includes in-medium effects such as Fermi motion, Pauli blocking, nuclear binding, and final-state interactions. They are implemented by means of the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) coupled-channel transport model. This allows us to study exclusive channe…
We derive simple and physically transparent expressions for the contribution of the strong interaction to one nucleon removal processes in peripheral relativistic heavy ion collisions. The coherent contribution,i.e, the excitation of a giant dipole resonance via meson exchange is shown to be negligible as well as interference between coulomb and nuclear excitation. Incoherent nucleon knock out contribution is also derived suggesting the nature of the nuclear interaction in this class of processes. We also justify the simple formulae used to fit the data of the E814 Collaboration.
The influence of final state $NN$- and pi N-rescattering in incoherent pion photoproduction on the deuteron has been investigated. For the elementary photoproduction operator an effective Lagrangian model is used which describes well the elementary reaction. The interactions in the final two-body subsystems are taken in separable form. While NN-rescattering shows quite a significant effect, particularly strong for neutral pion production, pi N-rescattering is almost negligible. Inclusion of such effects leads to an improved and quite satisfactory agreement with experiment.
Developed earlier concept of quasielastic knock out of pions from nucleons by high-energy electrons is propounded as a tool for checking microscopical model ($^3P_0$ - fluctuation) for decay of N to different channels $π+B$ and Preparata model of nucleus structure.
Incoherent pion photoproduction on the deuteron is studied for photon energies from threshold up to 1 GeV with special emphasis on polarization observables. The elementary $γN\toπN$ amplitude is taken from the MAID model. The influence of final state interactions on total and semi-exclusive cross sections $\vec d(\vecγ,π)NN$ is investigated by including complete rescattering in the final $NN$- and $πN$-subsystems. For charged pion-production the influence of $NN$-rescattering is moderate whereas $πN$-rescattering is almost negligible. Much stronger influences of $NN$-rescattering are seen in n…
Formal expressions are developed for the general five-fold differential cross section of incoherent $π$-photoproduction on the deuteron including beam and target polarization. The polarization observables of the cross section are described by various beam, target and beam-target asymmetries for polarized photons and/or polarized deuterons. They are given as bilinear hermitean forms in the reaction matrix elements divided by the unpolarized cross section. In addition, the corresponding observables for the semi-exclusive reaction $\vec d(\vec γ,π)NN$ are also given.
Incoherent pion electroproduction on the deuteron is studied from threshold up to the second resonance region with special emphasis on the influence of final state interaction, in particular on polarization observables. The elementary $γN\toπN$ amplitude is taken from the MAID-2003 model. Final state interaction is included by considering complete rescattering in the final $NN$ and $πN$ subsystems. Their influence on the structure functions governing the semi-exclusive differential cross section, where besides the scattered electron only the produced pion is detected, is investigated in detail…
We study the incoherent neutrinoproduction of photons and pions with neutrino energy E_ν $\leqslant$ 0.5 GeV. These processes are relevant to the background analysis in neutrino-oscillation experiments, for example MiniBooNE [A. A. Aquilar-Arevalo \textit{et al.} (MiniBooNE Collaboration), Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 032301(2008)]. The calculations are carried out using a Lorentz-covariant effective field theory (EFT) which contains nucleons, pions, the Delta (1232) ($Δ$ s), isoscalar scalar ($σ$) and vector ($ω$) fields, and isovector vector ($ρ$) fields, and has SU(2)_{L} $\otimes$ SU(2)_{R} chira…
The contribution of incoherent single pion photoproduction to the spin response of the deuteron, i.e., the asymmetry of the total photoabsorption cross section with respect to parallel and antiparallel spins of photon and deuteron, is calculated over the region of the $Δ$-resonance with inclusion of final state $NN$- and $πN$-rescattering. Sizeable effects, mainly from $NN$-rescattering, are found leading to an appreciable reduction of the spin asymmetry. Furthermore, the contribution to the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral is explicitly evaluated by integration up to a photon energy of 550 MeV.…
Incoherent pion photoproduction on the deuteron is studied in the first resonance region. The unpolarized cross section, the beam asymmetry, and the vector and tensor target asymmetries are calculated in the framework of a diagrammatic approach. Pole diagrams and one-loop diagrams with $NN$ scattering in the final state are taken into account. An elementary operator for pion photoproduction on the nucleon is taken in various on-shell forms and calculated using the SAID and MAID multipole analyses. Model dependence of the obtained results is discussed in some detail. A comparison with predictio…
We address the issue of nuclear attenuation in nucleon and pion knockout reactions. A selection of results from a model based on a relativistic multiple-scattering approximation is presented. We show transparency calculations for pion electroproduction on several nuclei, where data are in very good agreement with calculations including color transparency. Secondly, we discuss the density dependence of reactions involving one or double proton knockout. The latter reaction succeeds in probing the high density regions in the deep interior of the nucleus.
The scaling of pion multiplicities with system size in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus reactions at 200 A GeV is investigated. A nuclear geometry calculation of incoherent multiple scattering including effects of deceleration of the participating particles is presented. Pion multiplicities at high transverse momenta agree relatively well with an overall scaling with the number of binary collisions. The deviations from this gross scaling for p+A and S+Au reactions at 200AGeV are compared to model predictions and the implications are discussed. Within this picture no universal scaling law for…
The universal curve $σ/A$ of nuclear photoabsorption is investigated within a Fermi gas model of nuclear matter. An energy range from pion threshold up to 400 MeV is considered. The interactions between nucleon, pion, $Δ$-isobar and photon are considered in the non-relativistic approximation with corrections of the order $1/M$ taken into account with respect to proton mass. Analytical expressions are obtained, in which the influence of nuclear correlations, two-nucleon contributions and relativistic corrections is studied explicitely. An extension of the model calculation to nucleon knock-out …
We investigate charged and neutral current neutrino induced incoherent pion production off nuclei at MiniBooNE and K2K energies within the GiBUU model. We assume impulse approximation and treat the nucleus as a local Fermi gas of nucleons bound in a mean-field potential. In-medium spectral functions are also taken into account. The outcome of the initial neutrino nucleon reaction undergoes complex hadronic final state interactions. We present results for neutral current pi^0 and charged current pi^+ production and compare to MiniBooNE and K2K data.
The generalized Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule is evaluated for the contribution of single pion production on the deuteron by explicit integration up to an energy of 1.5 GeV for both coherent and incoherent production. As elementary $γ^* N\toπN$ amplitude the MAID2003 model has been used. For incoherent production final state interaction is included in the final $NN$ and $πN$ subsystems. The resulting contribution to the generalized transverse GDH sum rule is considerably smaller than the negative contribution from the disintegration channel $d(e,e')np$ which dominates the sum rule at low $Q^2…
In the energy range of present and future accelerator-based neutrino-oscillation experiments, single-pion production (SPP) is one of the main contributions to the neutrino-nucleus scattering cross section. For these neutrino energies, ranging from several hundreds of MeV to a few GeV, the SPP on the nucleus is usually described by the reaction in which the incoming lepton couples to one bound nucleon in the nucleus, producing a pion and the knock-out nucleon, along with the residual system and the scattered lepton in the final state. Here, the kinematics and cross section formula for this proc…
The Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule is evaluated for the deuteron by explicit integration up to a photon energy of 550 MeV including contributions from the photodisintegration channel and from coherent and incoherent single pion production as well. The photodisintegration channel converges fast enough in this energy range and gives a large negative contribution, essentially from the $^1S_0$ resonant state near threshold. Its absolute value is about the same size than the sum of proton and neutron GDH values. It is only partially cancelled by the single pion production contribution. But the inco…
I explain the Sato-Lee (SL) model and its extension to the neutrino-induced pion production off the nucleon. Then I discuss applications of the SL model to incoherent and coherent pion productions in the neutrino-nucleus scattering. I mention a further extension of this approach with a dynamical coupled-channels model developed in Excited Baryon Analysis Center of JLab.
The charged current pion production induced by neutrinos in $^{12}{C}$, $^{16}{O}$ and $^{56}{Fe}$ nuclei has been studied. The calculations have been done for the coherent as well as the incoherent processes assuming $Δ$ dominance and take into account the effect of Pauli blocking, Fermi motion and the renormalization of $Δ$ in the nuclear medium. The pion absorption effects have also been taken into account.
We analyze charged-current electron-neutrino cross sections on Carbon. We consider two different theoretical approaches, on one hand the Continuum Random Phase Approximation (CRPA) which allows a description of giant resonances and quasielastic excitations, on the other hand the RPA-based calculations which are able to describe multinucleon emission and coherent and incoherent pion production as well as quasielastic excitations. We compare the two approaches in the genuine quasielastic channel, and find a satisfactory agreement between them at large energies while at low energies the collectiv…
We investigate charged and neutral current neutrino-induced incoherent pion production off nuclei within the GiBUU model at energies relevant for the MiniBooNE and K2K experiments. Special attention is paid to the entanglement between measured CCQE and CC1pi+ cross sections. We further give predictions and compare to recent data measured at MiniBooNE.
We present the current status of the research activities of the Ghent group on neutrino-nucleus interactions. These consist in the modeling of some of the relevant neutrino-nucleus reaction channels at intermediate energies: low-energy nuclear excitations, quasielastic scattering, two-nucleon knockout processes and single-pion production. The low-energy nuclear excitations and the quasielastic peak are described using a Hartree-Fock-CRPA (continuum random phase approximation) model that takes into account nuclear long-range correlations as well as the distortion of the outgoing nucleon wave fu…
We have studied charged current $\barν_l$ induced one pion production from $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O nuclear targets at MiniBooNE and atmospheric antineutrino energies. The calculations have been done for the incoherent pion production process as well as for the pions coming from the hyperons in the quasielastic production of $Λ$ and $Σ$. The calculations are done in the local density approximation. For the inelastic processes the calculations have been done in the $Δ$ dominance model and we take into account the effect of Pauli blocking, Fermi motion of the nucleon and renormalization of $Δ$ prop…
We investigate neutrino-nucleus collisions at intermediate energies incorporating quasi-elastic scattering and the excitation of 13 resonances as elementary processes, taking into account medium effects such as Fermi motion, Pauli blocking, mean-field potentials and in-medium spectral functions. A coupled-channel treatment of final state interactions is achieved with the GiBUU transport model. Results for inclusive reactions, neutrino- and electron-induced, as well as for pion production and nucleon knockout are presented.
We present a model for weak CC induced nuclear reactions at energies of interest for current and future neutrino oscillation experiments. This model is a natural extension of the work of Refs.[1,2], where the QE contribution to the inclusive electron and neutrino scattering on nuclei was analyzed. The model is based on a systematic many body expansion of the gauge boson absorption modes that includes one, two and even three body mechanisms, as well as the excitation of Delta isobars. The whole scheme has no free parameters, besides those previously adjusted to the weak pion production off the …
We review Quasielastic (QE) inclusive and semi--inclusive neutrino/antineutrino Charged Current (CC) and Neutral Current (NC) induced nuclear reactions at intermediate energies. We pay special attention to nuclear corrections besides Pauli blocking: Long and Short range nuclear correlations (RPA and SRC) and particle and hole Spectral Functions (SF). We also critically review the use of the Plane and Distorted Wave Impulse approximations (PWIA and DWIA) to describe inclusive one nucleon knockout reactions off nuclei. In this context, we present results from a Monte Carlo cascade method to acco…
This dissertation explores two main topics: 1) Color Transparency and quasi-elastic knockout reactions involving pions and $ρ$ mesons; and 2) determination of the $J/ψ$-nucleon scattering amplitude and scattering length via $J/ψ$ electroproduction on the deuteron. It is shown that at the energies available at the COMPASS experiment at CERN, Color Transparency should be detectable in the reaction $π+A\to π+p+(A-1)^*$ (proton knockout). It is also shown that Color Transparency should be detectable in the electroproduction reaction $γ^*+A\toρ+p+(A-1)^*$ at small $Q^2$ (where $Q^2$ is the virtuali…
Rescattering following a neutrino-nucleus reaction changes the number, energy, and direction of detectable hadrons. In turn, this affects the selection and kinematic distributions of subsamples of neutrino events used for interaction or oscillation analysis. This technical note focuses on three forms of two-body rescattering. Elastic hadron+nucleus scattering primarily changes the direction of the hadron with very little energy transfer. Secondly, a hadron+nucleon quasi-elastic process leads to the knockout of a single struck nucleon, possibly with charge exchange between the two hadrons. Also…
Incoherent $η$ photoproduction on the deuteron is studied with the main emphasis on the role of final state interactions. In addition to the previously studied mechanisms of $NN$ and $ηN$ rescatterings, the role of an intermediate pion exchange is considered in detail, where first a pion is photoproduced on one nucleon and then rescatters into an $η$ meson on the other, the spectator nucleon. It is found, that the role of this pion mediated contribution is comparable in size to that of $ηN$ rescattering. Results for total and semi-inclusive differential cross sections and associated polarizati…
We have studied charged current one pion production induced by $ν_μ(\barν_μ)$ from some nuclei. The calculations have been done for the incoherent pion production processes from these nuclear targets in the $Δ$ dominance model and take into account the effect of Pauli blocking, Fermi motion and renormalization of $Δ$ properties in the nuclear medium. The effect of final state interactions of pions has also been taken into account. The numerical results have been compared with the recent results from the MiniBooNE experiment for the charged current 1$π$ production, and also with some of the old…
We examine the validity of the notion of the coherent state for pions and the quantum scattering effect in the final state of pion emission. When the number of particles is large, the effect caused by the small but finite mass difference between the neutral and charged pions can add up substantially in the quantum evolution of an initially coherent state. As a result, the states with quite different numbers of neutral or charged pions are essentially incoherent. The importance of the quantum scattering in the final-state isospin charge distribution of a disoriented chiral condensate (DCC) is i…

The recent theoretical developments in the field of neutrino-nucleus interactions in the few-GeV region are reviewed based on the presentations made at the NuInt09 Workshop. The topics of electron scattering and its connections with neutrino interactions, neutrino induced quasielastic scattering and pion production (coherent and incoherent) are covered, with special emphasis on the challenges that arise in the comparison with new experimental data.
Pion elastic, charge exchange scattering and induced eta production on the trinucleon systems are investigated in a coupled-channels approach in momentum space with Fadeev wave functions. The channel $πN \rightarrow ηN$ is included using an isobar model with S-, P-, and D-wave resonances. While the coherent reactions like $^3$He($π,π)^3$He can be reasonably well reproduced up to $T_π$=500 MeV, large discrepancies appear for the incoherent processes, $^3$He($π^-,π^0)^3$H and $^3$He($π^-,η)^3$H at backward angles and energies above $Δ$-resonance. In the forward direction the $(π,η)$ calculations…
We discuss recent \emph{ab initio} calculations based on self-consistent Green's function theory. It is found that a simple extension of the formalism to account for two-nucleon scattering outside the model space allows to calculate non-soft interactions. With this, it is possible to make predictions for Lattice QCD potentials, obtained so far at pion masses of $m_π= 0.47$GeV/c$^2$. More traditional calculations that use saturating chiral EFT forces yield a good description of nuclear responses and nucleon knockout spectroscopy.
In this paper, we present the results of a study made for the effect of nuclear medium in the charged current induced quasielastic lepton production(CCQE) and the incoherent and coherent one pion production (CC1$π^+$)processes from $^{12}C$ in the $ν_μ$ energy region of 0.4-3GeV. The theoretical results are compared with the recent experimental results for the ratio of charged current $ν_μ$ induced one pion production cross section to the quasielastic lepton production cross section reported by K2K collaboration. We also present the results for the angular and momentum distributions of leptons…
A study of charged current induced anti-neutrino interactions from nuclei has been done for the intermediate energy ($<2$GeV) anti-neutrinos and applied to $^{12}$C, relevant for ongoing experiment by MiniBooNE collaboration. The calculations have been done for the quasielastic and inelastic lepton production as well as for the incoherent and the coherent pion production processes. The calculations are done in local density approximation. In the case of the quasielastic reaction the effects of Pauli blocking, Fermi motion effects, renormalization of weak transition strengths in nuclear medium …
A review of our works providing a theoretical description of incoherent pion photoproduction on the deuteron is presented. The existing $γd\toπNN$ data are analysed, especially those obtained more recently by the CLAS Collaboration at JLab, the A2 Collaboration at MAMI at Mainz, and the PION@MAX-lab Collaboration at Lund. A procedure, which accounts for the final state interactions (FSI), is applied to extract $γn\toπN$ differential cross sections from the deuteron data. The role of FSI is discussed. We also comment on the results of other works in connection with some discrepancies seen in co…
The present status of the in-medium invariant $π-π$ mass distribution in the sigma-meson channel around the threshold is reviewed from the theory side and contrasted with recent experiments on $(π,2π)$ knock-out reactions. A preliminary investigation indicates that the strongly target-mass dependent invariant mass enhancement of the two pions can be explained theoretically. A more refined reaction theory is needed to confirm this result. In the theoretical description, based on the linear sigma model, emphasis is put on constraints from chiral symmetry.
We study the pion-induced inclusive $Λ(1520)$ hyperon production from nuclei near threshold within a nuclear spectral function approach accounting for incoherent primary $π^-$ meson--proton ${π^-}p \to K^0Λ(1520)$ production processes. We calculate the absolute differential and total cross sections for the production of $Λ(1520)$ hyperons off carbon and tungsten nuclei at laboratory angles of 0$^{\circ}$--10$^{\circ}$, 10$^{\circ}$--45$^{\circ}$ and 45$^{\circ}$--85$^{\circ}$ by $π^-$ mesons with momentum of 1.7 GeV/c as well as their relative (transparency ratio) differential and integral yie…
The MINER$ν$A experiment investigates neutrino interactions with nucleons needed for an understanding of electroweak interactions of hadrons. Since nuclear targets are being used many-body effects may affect the extracted cross sections and the energy reconstruction. The latter is essential for the extraction of neutrino oscillation properties. We investigate the influence of nuclear effects on neutrino interaction cross sections and make predictions for charged current quasielastic (QE) scattering, nucleon-knock-out and pion- and kaon-production on a CH target. The Giessen Boltzmann--Uehling-…
The article begins with a description of chiral symmetry and its application to neutrino induced reactions. For small $Q^2$ (forward direction) the process is dominated by the amplitute with helicity zero where the pion pole disappears when multiplied with the polarization vector. The remaining part of the amplitude is determined by PCAC. For $E_ν> 2$ GeV the computed cross sections are in good agreement with data. In coherent pion production we expect equal yields for neutrinos and antineutrinos a relation which for $E_ν> 2$ GeV is fulfilled. We discuss specific features of the data and sugge…
The results from an investigation of the incoherent single pion electroweak production on the deuteron in the $Δ$(1232) region are reported. The importance of including the nucleon-nucleon final state interactions in extracting the neutrino-nucleon cross sections from the data obtained from the experiments on the deuteron target is demonstrated.
Recent data from the PIONS$@$MAX-lab Collaboration, measuring the total cross section of the pion incoherent photoproduction $γd\toπ^-pp$ near threshold, have been used to extract the E$_{0+}$ multipole and total cross section of the reaction $γn\!\to\!π^-p$, also near threshold. These are the first measurements of the reaction $γd\toπ^-pp$ in the threshold region. The value of E$_{0+}$ is extracted through a fit to the deuteron data in a photoproduction model accounting for final-state interactions. The model takes an $S$-wave approximation for the elementary reaction $γn\!\to\!π^-p$ with E$_…
The cross sections for electron induced two-nucleon knockout reactions are evaluated for the example of the $^{16}$O(e,e$'$pn)$^{14}$N reaction leading to discrete states in the residual nucleus $^{14}$N. These calculations account for the effects of nucleon-nucleon correlations and include the contributions of two-body meson exchange currents as the pion seagull, pion in flight and the isobar current contribution. The effects of short-range as well as tensor correlations are calculated within the framework of the coupled cluster method employing the Argonne V14 potential as a model for a real…
We have developed a model to describe the interactions of neutrinos with nucleons and nuclei, focusing on the region of the quasielastic and Delta(1232) peaks. We describe neutrino nucleon collisions with a fully relativistic formalism which incorporates state-of-the-art parametrizations of the form factors for both the nucleon and the N-Delta transition. The model has then been extended to finite nuclei, taking into account nuclear effects such as Fermi motion, Pauli blocking (both within the local density approximation), nuclear binding and final state interactions. The in-medium modificatio…
In this paper we study coherent neutrinoproduction of photons [neutral current (NC)] and pions [charged current (CC) and NC] with $E_ν \leqslant 0.5 $ GeV. The production from nucleons and incoherent production with $E_ν \leqslant 0.5 \mathrm{GeV}$ have been studied in [B. D. Serot and X. Zhang, Phys. Rev. C 86, (2012) 015501; and X. Zhang and B. D. Serot, Phys. Rev. C 86, (2012) 035502]. These processes are relevant to the background analysis in neutrino-oscillation experiments, for example MiniBooNE [A. A. Aquilar-Arevalo et al. (MiniBooNE Collaboration), Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 032301 (2008)]…
We show a relationship between elastic electron scattering observables and the elastic neutrino cross section that provides a straightforward determination of the latter from experimental data of the former and relates their uncertainties. An illustration of this procedure is presented using a Hartree-Fock mean field for the nuclear structure of a set of even-even nuclear targets, using the spectra of the neutrinos produced in pion decay at rest. We also analyze the prospects to measure the incoherent axial contribution to the neutrino elastic scattering in odd targets.
The hybrid model for electroweak single-pion production (SPP) off the nucleon, presented in [González-Jiménez et al., Phys. Rev. D 95, 113007 (2017)], is extended here to the case of incoherent pion-production on the nucleus. Combining a low-energy model with a Regge approach, this model provides valid predictions in the entire energy region of interest for current and future accelerator-based neutrino-oscillation experiments. The Relativistic Mean-Field model is used for the description of the bound nucleons while the outgoing hadrons are considered as plane waves. This approach, known as Rel…
Detecting neutrinos and extracting the information they bring along is an ambitions task that requires a detailed understanding of neutrino-nucleus interactions over a broad energy range. We present calculations for quasi-elastic neutrino-induced nucleon knockout reactions on atomic nuclei and neutrino-induced pion production reactions. In our models, final-state interactions are introduced using a relativistic multiple-scattering Glauber approximation (RMSGA) approach. For interactions at low incoming neutrino energies, long-range correlations are implemented by means of a continuum random ph…
We study the impact of the description of the knockout nucleon wave function on electron- and neutrino-induced quasielastic and single-pion production cross sections. We work in a fully relativistic and quantum mechanical framework, where the relativistic mean-field model is used to describe the target nucleus. The focus is on Pauli blocking and the distortion of the final nucleon, these two nuclear effects are separated and analyzed in detail. We find that a proper quantum mechanical treatment of these effects is crucial to provide the correct magnitude and shape of the inclusive cross sectio…
The charged current one pion production induced by $ν_μ$ from nucleons and nuclei like $^{12}$C and $^{16}$O nuclei has been studied. The calculations have been done for the incoherent and the coherent processes from nuclear targets assuming the $Δ$ dominance model and take into account the effect of Pauli blocking, Fermi motion of the nucleon and renormalization of $Δ$ properties in a nuclear medium. The effect of final state interactions of pions has been taken into account. The theoretical uncertainty in the total cross sections due to various parameterizations of the weak transition form f…
