In this paper we characterize and classify surfaces in ${\mathbb{H}}^2\times{\mathbb{R}}$ which have a canonical principal direction. Here ${\mathbb{H}}^2$ denotes the hyperbolic plane. We study some geometric properties such as minimality and flatness. Some examples are given to complete the study.
In this paper, we characterize and classify all surfaces endowed with canonical principal direction relative to a space-like and light-like, constant direction in Minkowski 3-spaces.
In this paper, we introduce canonical principal direction (CPD) submanifolds with higher codimension in Euclidean spaces. We obtain the complete classification of surfaces endowed with CPD in the Euclidean 4-space.
We introduce canonical coordinates on minimal time-like surfaces in the n-dimensional Minkowski space and prove the existence and the uniqueness of these parameters. With respect to these coordinates the coefficients of the first fundamental form are expressed by the invariants of the surface. On any time-like surface we introduce a special complex function over the algebra of the double numbers and apply the analysis over the algebra of the double numbers as a convenient tool to study these surfaces. Then the canonical coordinates on minimal time-like surfaces are characterized by a natural c…
We consider Lorentz surfaces in $\mathbb R^3_1$ satisfying the condition $H^2-K\neq 0$, where $K$ and $H$ are the Gauss curvature and the mean curvature, respectively, and call them Lorentz surfaces of general type. For this class of surfaces we introduce special isotropic coordinates, which we call canonical, and show that the coefficient $F$ of the first fundamental form and the mean curvature $H$, expressed in terms of the canonical coordinates, satisfy a special integro-differential equation which we call a natural equation of the Lorentz surfaces of general type. Using this natural equati…

We prove that the mirror map is trivial for the canonical formal families of Calabi-Yau varieties constructed by Gross and the second author. In other words, the natural coordinate in a canonical Calabi-Yau family is a canonical coordinate in the sense of Hodge theory. This implies that the higher weight periods directly carry enumerative information with no further gauging necessary as opposed to the classical case. A side result is that the canonical formal families lift to analytic families. We compute the relevant period integrals explicitly. The cycles to integrate over are constructed fr…
We investigate G-invariant symplectic structures on the cotangent bundle T*P of a principal G-bundle P(M,G) which are canonically related to automorphisms of the tangent bundle TP covering the identity map of P and commuting with the action of TG on TP. The symplectic structures corresponding to connections on P(M,G) are also investigated. The Marsden-Weinstein reduction procedure for these symplectic structures is discussed.
We reconsider the (rational) Calogero-Moser system from the point of view of bi-Hamiltonian geometry. By using geometrical tools of the latter, we explicitly construct set(s) of spectral canonical coordinates, that is, complete sets of Darboux coordinates defined by the eigenvalues and the eigenvectors of the Lax matrix.
We apply the complex analysis over the double numbers $D$ to study the minimal time-like surfaces in $R^4_2$. A minimal time-like surface which is free of degenerate points is said to be of general type. We divide the minimal time-like surfaces of general type into three types and prove that these surfaces admit special geometric (canonical) parameters. Then the geometry of the minimal time-like surfaces of general type is determined by the Gauss curvature $K$ and the curvature of the normal connection $\varkappa$, satisfying the system of natural equations for these surfaces. We prove the fol…
We show that the extended principal bundle of a Cartan geometry of type $(A(m,\mathbb{R}),GL(m,\mathbb{R}))$, endowed with its extended connection $\hatω$, is isomorphic to the principal $A(m,\mathbb{R})$-bundle of affine frames endowed with the affine connection as defined in classical Kobayashi-Nomizu volume I. Then we classify the local holonomy groups of the Cartan geometry canonically associated to a Riemannian manifold. It follows that if the holonomy group of the Cartan geometry canonically associated to a Riemannian manifold is compact then the Riemannian manifold is locally a product …
Consider a complete Riemannian manifold $M^n$ and let $Σ^n$ be an orientable hypersurface of the product manifold $M\times\mathbb{R}$ endowed with its standard product metric $\langle \,,\, \rangle.$ Let $\nablaξ$ denote the gradient of the height function $ξ$ of $Σ.$ In this note, we characterize the hypersurfaces $Σ$ which have $\nablaξ$ as a principal direction. Our approach is based on the work of R. Tojeiro, who considered the case where $M$ is a constant sectional curvature space form.
Given a finite collection of $C^1$ vector fields on a $C^2$ manifold which span the tangent space at every point, we consider the question of when there is locally a coordinate system in which these vector fields have a higher level of smoothness. For example, when is there a coordinate system in which the vector fields are smooth, or real analytic, or have Zygmund regularity of some finite order? We address this question in a quantitative way, which strengthens and generalizes previous works on the quantitative theory of sub-Riemannian (aka Carnot-Carathéodory) geometry due to Nagel, Stein, a…
