In some new physics models, there exists a long-lived colored particle. Although such a particle is expected be discovered by studying the muon-like tracks, it is not easy to discriminate hadronic events from leptonic ones at the Large Hadron Collider. We focus on the charged track events associated with a single hard gluon jet. They are sensitive to the colored long-lived particle and found to be almost free from the background after applying the velocity cut. We also study the the process to probe properties of the particle.
In this paper an updated Geant4 simulation toolkit is presented describing the interactions in matter of heavy hadrons containing long-lived squarks and gluinos. Generic signatures are derived that are applicable at the Large Hadron Collider, and the problem of theoretical uncertainties arising from model dependence is addressed. For a more detailed description of the assumptions and techniques used, the reader is referred to arXiv:0908.1868.
We study the collider signatures of a long-lived massive colored scalar transforming trivially under the weak interaction and decaying within the inner sections of a detector such as ATLAS or CMS. In our study, we assume that the colored scalar couples at tree-level to a top quark and a stable fermion, possibly arising from a dark sector or from supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model. After implementing the latest experimental searches for long-lived colored scalars, we observe a region of parameter space consistent with a colored electroweak-singlet scalar with mass between $\sim200-…
Long-lived colored particles with masses m > 200 GeV are allowed by current accelerator searches, and are predicted by a number of scenarios for physics beyond the standard model. We argue that such "heavy partons'' effectively have a geometrical cross section (of order 10 mb) for annihilation at temperatures below the QCD deconfinement transition. The annihilation process involves the formation of an intermediate bound state of two heavy partons with large orbital angular momentum. The bound state subsequently decays by losing energy and angular momentum to photon or pion emission, followed b…
Cross sections of the colored scalar particle production in $pp$-collisions are calculated and differential and total cross sections of the corresponding parton subprocesses are obtained. The total cross section of scalar gluon production in $pp$-collisions at the LHC is estimated and the dominant decays of scalar gluons are discussed. The production cross section of scalar gluons $F$ with masses $m_F\lesssim 1300$ GeV is shown to be sufficient for the effective production of these particles at the LHC.
We study QCD correction to the pair production of colored scalar particles in electron-positron annihilation with an emphasis on gluon emission in the final state. We discuss the usefulness of working in a ``quasi-two-body'' frame and present the helicity amplitudes for the process. We compare the final state configuration with fermion pair production and find that the three-jet fraction for the scalars shows quantitative difference from that for fermions.
We study effects from new colored states and the Higgs portal on gluon fusion production. We isolate possible loop contributions from new colored scalars, fermions, and vectors, incorporating effects from Higgs portal-induced scalar mixing, leading to dramatic effects on gluon fusion and branching fractions. Higgs identification must generally allow for these effects, and using our results, possible tensions from fits to the Standard Model expectation can be relieved by inclusion of New Physics effects.
It is suggested that virtual gluon-clusters exist in nucleon, and that such colorless and colored objects manifest themselves in the small $x_B$ region of inelastic lepton-nucleon scattering processes. The relationship between the space-time properties of such clusters and the striking features observed in these scattering processes is discussed. A phase-space model is used to show how quantitative results can be obtained in such an approach. The results of this model-calculation are in reasonable agreement with the existing data. Further experiments are suggested.
It is claimed that only one gluon is massless and the other seven gluons are massive. Out of eight gluons, six are colored and two are neutral. Among neutral gluons, one is massless and other one is massive. Massive neutral gluon is heavier than the colored gluons. Gluons can only be predicted by set theory but not by SU(3).
We consider a simple renormalizable model providing a UV completion for dark matter whose interactions with the Standard Model are primarily via the gluons. The model consists of scalar dark matter interacting with scalar colored mediator particles. A novel feature is the fact that (in contrast to more typical models containing dark matter whose interactions are mediated via colored scalars) the colored scalars typically decay into multi-quark final states, with no associated missing energy. We construct this class of models and examine associated phenomena related to dark matter annihilation,…
We analyze the behavior of Higgs to diphoton rate and Higgs gluon-gluon production cross section in minimal extensions of the Standard Model comprising new colored vector-like fermions that do not mix with the ordinary ones. We compare these information with constraints coming from electroweak precision measurements. We compute pair production cross sections for the lightest fermion and discuss the LHC bounds. Finally, we study the phenomenology of possible quarkonium states composed by these new colored fermions.
We study properties of a gluon plasma above the critical temperature $T_c$ in a generalized quasi-particle approach with a Lorentz spectral function. The model parameters are determined by a fit of the entropy $s$ to lattice QCD data. The effective degrees of freedom are found to be rather heavy and of a sizeable width. With the spectral width being closely related to the interaction rate, we find a large effective cross section, which is comparable to the typical distance squared of the quasiparticles. This suggests that the system should be viewed as a liquid as also indicated by an estimate…
The relic cosmological abundance of stable or long-lived neutral colored particles gets reduced by about a few orders of magnitude by annihilations that occur after QCD confinement. We compute the abundance and the cosmological bounds on relic gluinos. The same post-confinement effect strongly enhances co-annihilations with a lighter Dark Matter particle, provided that their mass difference is below a few GeV. Charged colored particles (such as stops) can instead form baryons, which can be (quasi)stable in some models.
Hypothetical long-lived massive colored particles (MCPs or Ys) would be confined in colorless exotic strongly interacting massive particles (SIMPs) at color confinement temperature of T_C /sim 200 MeV. Two long-lived MCPs form a bound state (Y /bar{Y}) at collisions of two SIMPs. We study sensitivities of MCP annihilation to decay properties of resonances (Y /bar{Y}), and binding energies or energy levels of exotic SIMPs. The (Y /bar{Y}) formation is assumed to dominantly proceeds through resonances of (Y/bar{Y}) in this paper. We make a toy model of the effective cross section for Y /bar{Y} a…
We perform a study of the LHC discovery reach on a heavy gluon (G*) and heavy fermions (top and bottom excitations), coming from a new composite sector. We find that heavy fermion resonances have a great impact on the composite gluon phenomenology. If the composite gluon is heavier than composite fermions, as flavor observables seem to suggest, the search in the channel where G* decays into a heavy fermion plus its Standard Model partner is very promising, with the possibility for both the G* and heavy fermions to be discovered at the early stage of the LHC. The channel offers also the possibi…
In color SU(2) lattice QCD, we investigate colored-diquark distributions in two-hadron scatterings by means of Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes on the lattice. With colored-diquark operators in the Coulomb gauge, we measure components of two colored diquarks realized as intermediate states via one gluon exchange (OGE) processes in hadron scattering. From the colored-diquark distributions, we estimate the dominant range of gluon (color) exchanges between closely located two hadrons. We find that the colored-diquark components are enhanced at the short range ($\leq$0.2 fm) and their tails show the sing…
We discuss the energy variation of a parton passing through a quark-gluon plasma(QGP) taking into account nonlinear polarization effect. We find the parton can be accelerated by fluctuations in QGP, which gives us a new physical insight about the response of QGP to such external the current.
The initial distribution of gluons at the very early times after a high energy heavy ion collision is described by the bulk scale $Q_s$ of gluon saturation in the nuclear wavefunction. The subsequent evolution of the system towards kinetic equilibrium is described by a non-linear Landau equation for the single particle distributions \cite{Mueller1,Mueller2}. In this paper, we solve this equation numerically for the idealized initial conditions proposed by Mueller, and study the evolution of the system to equilibrium. We discuss the sensitivity of our results on the dynamical screening of colli…
We discuss the production of heavy colored paricles at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) through gluon-gluon fusion process. A factorization theorem is obtained for this process using Soft Collinear Effective Theory. Our factorization theorem does not depend on any assumptions regarding the physics above the mass of the heavy colored particle. In this sense it is universal. The matching coefficient at the heavy particle mass scale depends however on the unkown physics above that scale and thus it is model dependent. Due to the large mass of the heavy colored particle, i.e., the hard scale and ne…
The Abelian decomposition of QCD which decomposes the gluons to the color neutral binding gluons and the colored valence gluons shows that QCD can be viewed as the restricted QCD (RCD) made of the binding gluons which has the valence gluons as colored source, and simplifies the QCD dynamics greatly. In particular, it tells that the gauge covariant valence gluons can be treated as the constituents of hadrons, and generalizes the quark model to the quark and valence gluon model. So it provides a comprehensive picture of glueballs and their mixing with quarkoniums, and predicts new hybrid hadrons…
R-hadrons are only one of many possible stable colored states that the LHC might produce. All such particles would provide a spectacular, if somewhat unusual, signal at ATLAS and CMS. Produced in large numbers and leaving a characteristic signature throughout all layers of the detector, including the muon chamber, they could be straightforward to discover even with low luminosity. Though such long lived colored particles (LLCPs) can be realized in many extensions of the Standard Model, most analyses of their phenomenology have focused only on R-hadrons. In order to distinguish among the possib…
I look at propagation of jets that act as a probe of the medium in the phenomenologically relevant case of a short lived dilute Quark Gluon Plasma(QGP) created during heavy ion collisions. Working in the regime where the lifetime of the medium is of the order or smaller than the formation time of the energetic jet, I derive a factorization formula with a manifest separation of scales for an illustrative jet substructure observable using the Open Quantum system Effective Field Theory(EFT) approach developed in \cite{Vaidya:2020lih}, in terms of a medium structure function and a medium induced j…
There has been much recent interest in long-lived massive particles at the LHC, understood as those with lifetimes between tens of micrometers and several meters. In this context we consider the possibility of long-lived electroweak singlet scalars charged under colour $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ with masses near a TeV. The shortest lifetime of interest is already longer than typical hadronisation scales. These exotic new particles would therefore appear as colour singlet bound states of the new scalars with quarks and gluons and it is their colour charge that prevents them from decaying. In particular w…
When the phase transition from the hadronic matter to the deconfined quark-gluon plasma or quark-gluon liquid is reached, the color degrees of freedom become important and appear explicitly in the equation of state. Under the extreme conditions, the color degrees of freedom can not decouple from the other degrees of freedom. The conservation of color charges is maintained by introducing the color chemical potentials and their fugacities. We demonstrate the explicit role of color degrees of freedom in the hot and dense matter of the weakly interacting quarks and gluons. In order to illustrate o…
The fragmentation function of vector particle into possible bound S-wave states with a heavy antiquark is calculated in the leading order of perturbative QCD for the high energy processes at large transverse momenta with the different behaviour of anomalous chromomagnetic moment. One-loop equations are derived for the evolution of fragmentation function moments, which is caused by the emission of hard gluons by the vector particle. The integrated probabilities of fragmentation are given. The distribution of bound state over the transverse momentum with respect to the axis of fragmentation is c…
The LHC is the perfect environment for the study of new physics in the top quark sector. We study the possibility of detecting signals of heavy color-octet vector resonances, through the charge asymmetry, in top-antitop+jet events. Besides contributions with the top-antitop pair in a color-singlet state, the asymmetry gets also contributions which are proportional to the color factor f_{abc}^2. This process is particularly interesting for extra-dimensional models, where the inclusive charge asymmetry generated by Kaluza-Klein excitations of the gluon vanishes at the tree level. We find that th…
We study a class of models in which the Higgs pair production is enhanced at hadron colliders by an extra neutral scalar. The scalar particle is produced by the gluon fusion via a loop of new colored particles, and decays into di-Higgs through its mixing with the Standard Model Higgs. Such a colored particle can be the top/bottom partner, such as in the dilaton model, or a colored scalar which can be triplet, sextet, octet, etc., called leptoquark, diquark, coloron, etc., respectively. We examine the experimental constraints from the latest Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data, and discuss the fut…
It has been suggested that relic long-lived strongly interacting massive particles (SIMPs, or $X$ particles) existed in the early universe. We study effects of such long-lived unstable SIMPs on big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) assuming that such particles existed during the BBN epoch, but then decayed long before they could be detected. The interaction strength between an $X$ particle and a nucleon is assumed to be similar to that between nucleons. We then calculate BBN in the presence of the unstable neutral charged $X^0$ particles taking into account the capture of $X^0$ particles by nuclei to…
We investigate the prospects for the discovery of massive hyper-gluons using data from the early runs of the CERN Large Hadron Collider with $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV and assuming an integrated luminosity of 1 fb$^{-1}$. A phenomenological Lagrangian is adopted to evaluate the cross section of a pair of colored vector bosons (coloron, $\tildeρ$) decaying into four colored scalar resonances (hyper-pion, $\tildeπ$), which then decay into eight gluons. We include the dominant physics background from the production of $8g$, $7g1q$, $6g2q$, and $5g3q$. We find an abundance of signal events and that realis…
We compute the elliptic flow generated by classical gluon fields in a high energy nuclear collision. The classical gluon fields are described by a typical momentum scale, the saturation scale Lambda_s, which is, for RHIC energies, of the order of 1-2 GeV. A significant elliptic flow is generated only over time scales on the order of the system size R. The flow is dominated by soft modes $p_{T} \sim Lambda_s / 4$ which linearize at very late times $tau \sim R \gg 1/Lambda_s$. We discuss the implications of our result for the theoretical interpretation of the RHIC data.
We propose a simple way to test the Abelian decomposition of QCD, the existence of two types of gluons, experimentally at LHC. The Abelian decomposition decomposes the gluons to the color neutral neurons and colored chromons gauge independently. This refines the Feynman diagram in a way that the color conservation is explicit, and generalizes the quark model to the quark and chromon model. We predict that the neuron jet has the color factor 3/4 and has a sharpest jet radius and smallest particle multiplicity, while the chromon jet with the color factor 9/4 remains the broadest jet. Moreover, t…
We present an analysis of the role that the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) resolution length, the minimal distance by which two nearby colored charges in a jet must be separated such that they engage with the plasma independently, plays in understanding the modification of jet substructure due to interaction with QGP. We identify a set of observables that are sensitive to whether jets are quenched as if they are single energetic colored objects or whether the medium that quenches them has the ability to resolve the internal structure of the jet. Using the hybrid strong/weak coupling model, we find t…
We consider an initially at rest colored particle which is struck by an ultra-relativistic nucleus. The particle is treated classically both with respect to its motion and its color charge. The nucleus is treated as a sheet of colored glass within the context of the Color Glass Condensate framework. We compute both the momentum and coordinates of the struck classical particle and the emitted radiation. Our computations generalize the classic electrodynamics computation of the radiation of an accelerated charged particle to include the radiation induced by the charged gluon field. This latter c…
We discuss the relic abundance of massive long lived colored particles with mass of the order of 1 TeV. We first examine the case where the massive colored particles have the standard color only. Next we consider the "Quirk Model" suggested by M. Luty, in which the colored particles transform under an additional non-abelian gauge group with a scale much smaller than the particles' mass. In both cases, the relic abundance is reduced via a "late" hadronic annihilation stage. In the second case the relic Quirks bind to ordinary quarks forming fractional charged objects and also anomalous heavy is…
We present analytical formulae for the Sommerfeld corrections to the annihilation of massive colored particles into quarks and gluons through the strong interaction. These corrections are essential to accurately compute the dark matter relic density for coannihilation with colored partners. Our formulae allow to compute the Sommerfeld effect, not only for the lowest term in the angular momentum expansion of the amplitude, but for all orders in the partial wave expansion. In particular, we carefully account for the effects of the spin of the annihilating particle on the symmetry of the two-part…
The general formalism of homogeneous nucleation theory is applied to study the hadronization pattern of the ultra-relativistic quark-gluon plasma (QGP) undergoing a first order phase transition. A coalescence model is proposed to describe the evolution dynamics of hadronic clusters produced in the nucleation process. The size distribution of the nucleated clusters is important for the description of the plasma conversion. The model is most sensitive to the initial conditions of the QGP thermalization, time evolution of the energy density, and the interfacial energy of the plasma-hadronic matte…
The Abelian decomposition of QCD tells that there are two types of gluons, the color neutral neurons and colored chromons. We propose to confirm the Abelian decomposition testing the existence of two types of gluon jets experimentally. We predict that one quarter of the gluon jet is made of the neurons which has the color factor 3/4 and the sharpest jet radius and smallest charged particle multiplicity, while the three quarters of the gluon jet are made of the chromons with the color factor 9/4 which have the broadest jet radious (broader than the quark jet). Moreover, we argue that the neuron…
We consider the gluon fusion production cross section of a scalar Higgs boson in models where fermion and scalar massive colored particles are present. We report analytic expressions for the matrix elements of $gg\to Hg$, $q\bar{q}\to Hg$, and $qg\to Hq$ processes completing the calculation of the NLO QCD corrections in these extended scenarios. The formulas are written in a complete general case, allowing a flexible use for different theoretical models. Applications of our results to two different models are presented: i) a model in which the SM Higgs sector is augmented by a weak doublet sca…
We consider the impact of new exotic colored and/or charged matter interacting through the Higgs portal on Standard Model Higgs boson searches at the LHC. Such Higgs portal couplings can induce shifts in the effective Higgs-gluon-gluon and Higgs-photon-photon couplings, thus modifying the Higgs production and decay patterns. We consider two possible interpretations of the current LHC Higgs searches based on ~ 5/fb of data at each detector: 1) a Higgs boson in the mass range (124-126) GeV and 2) a `hidden' heavy Higgs boson which is underproduced due to the suppression of its gluon fusion produ…
We study the colored resonance production at the LHC in a most general approach. We classify the possible colored resonances based on group theory decomposition, and construct their effective interactions with light partons. The production cross section from annihilation of valence quarks or gluons may be on the order of 400 - 1000 pb at LHC energies for a mass of 1 TeV with nominal couplings, leading to the largest production rates for new physics at the TeV scale, and simplest event topology with dijet final states. We apply the new dijet data from the LHC experiments to put bounds on variou…
We describe the dynamics of gluons and quarks in a relativistic nuclear collision, within the framework of classical mean-field transport theory, by the coupled equations for the classical Yang-Mills field and a collection of colored point particles. The particles represent the valence quarks in the colliding nuclei. We explore the time evolution of the gauge field in a numerical simulation of the collision of two Lorentz-boosted ``nuclei'' on a long three-dimensional gauge lattice. We report first results on soft gluon scattering and coherent gluon radiation.
We calculate the present expansion of our Universe endowed with relict colored objects - quarks and gluons - that survived hadronization either as isolated islands of quark-gluon "nuggets", or spread uniformly in the Universe. In the first scenario, the QNs can play the role of dark matter. In the second scenario, we demonstrate that uniform colored objects can play the role of dark energy providing the late-time accelerating expansion of the Universe.
We show that production of the Higgs boson through gluon-fusion may be suppressed in the presence of colored scalars. Substantial destructive interference between the top quark diagrams and colored scalar diagrams is possible due to cancellations between the real (and also imaginary) parts of the amplitudes. As an example, we consider a color-octet scalar that has a negative, order one coupling to the Higgs doublet. We find that gluon fusion can be suppressed by more than an order of magnitude when the scalar mass is below a few hundred GeV, while milder suppressions occur for larger scalar ma…
The search for long-lived particles (LLP) is an exciting physics opportunity in the upcoming runs of the Large Hadron Collider. In this paper, we focus on a new search strategy of using the High Granularity Calorimeter (HGCAL), part of the upgrade of the CMS detector, in such searches. In particular, we demonstrate that the high granularity of the calorimeter with this upgrade, which allows us to see "shower tracks" in the calorimeter, can play a crucial role in identifying the signal and suppressing the background. We study the potential reach of the HGCAL using a signal model in which the St…
The possibility of producing a measurable long-lived dark $Z$ boson, that is assumed to be produced either via its kinetic mixing with the hypercharge gauge boson or via mixing of the observed 125-GeV Higgs boson with the dark Higgs boson, called Higgs mixing, in Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is investigated. Displaced dimuons in the final state are considered where each of the $Z$ and the dark $Z$ bosons decays directly to a dimuon. The Higgs production cross sections via gluon-gluon fusion at 13 TeV calculated to a combination of next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order with QCD corr…
The goal of this paper is to extend the results of Ref. [1], where formulae were derived for gluonic radiation for a high energy nucleus colliding with a classical colored particle. In Ref. [1], we computed the amplitudes for radiation in the fragmentation region of the particle for a dilute gluonic field. In this paper, we compute the radiation by solving the fluctuation equations of the dense background field in a specific gauge which makes it simple to solve the asymptotic radiation from an initial condition immediately after the passage of the nucleus. We identify and compute two component…
Eventual signals of split sypersymmetry in cosmic ray physics are analyzed in detail. The study focusses particularly on quasi-stable colorless R-hadrons originating through confinement of long-lived gluinos (with quarks, anti-quarks, and gluons) produced in pp collisions at astrophysical sources. Because of parton density requirements, the gluino has a momentum which is considerable smaller than the energy of the primary proton, and so production of heavy (mass ~ 500 GeV) R-hadrons requires powerful cosmic ray engines able to accelerate particles up to extreme energies, somewhat above 10^{13.…
We discuss the properties of a system composed by a static plasma traversed by a jet of particles. Assuming that both the jet and the plasma can be described using a hydrodynamical approach, and in the conformal limit, we find that unstable modes arise when the velocity of the jet is larger than the speed of the sound of the plasma and only modes with momenta smaller than a certain values are unstable. Moreover, for ultrarelativistic velocities of the jet the most unstable modes correspond to relative angles between the velocity of the jet and momentum of the collective mode ~ pi/4. Our result…
We present one loop results for the amplitudes giving rise to couplings between a color octet scalar, a gluon, and an electroweak gauge boson. These amplitudes could signal new physics in $γ$ jet, $Z$ jet and $W$ jet production at the LHC. We compute the relevant branching ratios and identify regions of parameter space where these decay modes become important. This can happen for scalar masses below the threshold for decay into heavy quark pairs ($t\bar t$ and $t\bar b$); or for small Yukawa couplings in which case the colored scalars are fermiophobic. In the case of light scalars, ${\cal B}(S…
The Higgs couplings can receive non-decoupling corrections due to heavy quanta, and deviations from the SM can be used to test its presence. The possible Higgs signal recently reported at LEP, with mh=115 GeV, severely constrains the presence of heavy quanta, such as a heavy fourth family. At Tevatron, the Higgs production by gluon fusion, followed by the decay h -> WW*, can also be used to probe the existence of heavy colored particles, including additional families, chiral sextet and octet quarks. Within the MSSM, we also find that gluon fusion is a sensitive probe for the squark spectrum.
We perform a general study of the relic density and LHC constraints on simplified models where the dark matter coannihilates with a strongly interacting particle X. In these models, the dark matter depletion is driven by the self-annihilation of X to pairs of quarks and gluons through the strong interaction. The phenomenology of these scenarios therefore only depends on the dark matter mass and the mass splitting between dark matter and X as well as the quantum numbers of X. In this paper, we consider simplified models where X can be either a scalar, a fermion or a vector, as well as a color t…
A pair of new colored particles produced near the threshold can form a bound state and then annihilate into standard model particles. In this paper we show how the bound state signals can distinguish between two scenarios that have similar particle content and interactions but different spins, such as the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) and universal extra dimensions (UED). We find, for example, that bound states of KK gluons (KK gluonia) have an order of magnitude larger cross sections than gluinonia and they may be detectable as resonances in the $b\bar b$, $t\bar t$ or $γγ$ cha…
Measurements of lifetimes can be done in two ways. For very short lived particles, the width can be measured. For long lived ones, the lifetime can be directly measured, for example, using a displaced vertex. Practically, the lifetime cannot be extracted for particles with intermediate lifetimes. We show that for such cases information about the lifetime can be extracted for heavy colored particles that can be produced with known polarization. For example, a $t$-like particle with intermediate lifetime hadronizes into a superposition of the lowest two hadronic states, $T^*$ and $T$ (the equiva…
The coupling of Higgs with gauge bosons can receive non-decoupling corrections due to heavy quanta. Deviation from the SM predictions are described by a set of parameters e_V, which can be related to the parameters S,T. The Higgs production by gluon fusion can be used to probe e_g, whereas its decays into WW can probe e_W. The resulting bounds may imply the exclusion of heavy particles, such as additional standard or mirror families, chiral colored sextets and octet quarks. Within the MSSM, we also find that gluon fusion is a sensitive probe for the spectrum of squark masses.
