We show that the classical and strongly coupled QGP (cQGP) is characterized by a multiple of structure factors that obey generalized Orstein-Zernicke equations. We use the canonical partition function and its associated density functional to derive analytical equations for the density and charge monopole structure factors for arbitrary values of $Γ=V/K$, the ratio of the mean potential to Coulomb energy. The results are compared with SU(2) molecular dynamics simulations.
We review the properties of the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at finite temperature $T$ and baryon chemical potential $μ_B$ as created in heavy-ion collisions at ultrarelativistic energies. The description of the strongly interacting (non-perturbative) QGP in equilibrium is based on the effective propagators and couplings from the Dynamical QuasiParticle Model (DQPM) that is matched to reproduce the equation-of-state of the partonic system above the deconfinement temperature $T_C$ from lattice QCD. Based on a microscopic transport description of heavy-ion collisions we discuss …
Based on a thermodynamic $T$-matrix approach we extract the potential $V$ between two static charges in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) from fits to the pertinent lattice-QCD free energy. With suitable relativistic corrections we utilize this new potential to compute heavy-quark transport coefficients and compare the results to previous calculations using either $F$ or $U$ as potential. We then discuss a generalization of the $T$-matrix re-summation to a "matrix $\log$" re-summation of $t$-channel diagrams for the grand partition function of the QGP in the Luttinger-Ward skeleton diagram formalis…
High-energy heavy-ion collisions generate extremely strong magnetic field which plays a key role in a number of novel quantum phenomena in quark-gluon plasma (QGP), such as the chiral magnetic effect (CME). However, due to the complexity in theoretical modellings of the coupled electromagnetic fields and the QGP system, especially in the pre-equilibrium stages, the lifetime of the magnetic field in the QGP medium remains undetermined. We establish, for the first time, a kinetic framework to study the dynamical decay of the magnetic field in the early stages of a weakly coupled QGP by solving t…
We obtain the thermal photon and dilepton production rates in a strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at both zero and nonzero baryon chemical potential using a bottom-up Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) holographic model that is in good quantitative agreement with the thermodynamics of $(2+1)$-flavor lattice QCD around the crossover transition for baryon chemical potentials up to 400 MeV, which may be reached in the beam energy scan (BES) at RHIC. We find that increasing the temperature $T$ and the baryon chemical potential $μ_B$ enhances the peak present in both spectra. We also obtain the…
We investigate the shear viscosity of thermalized photons in the quark gluon plasma (QGP) at weak coupling and $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills plasma (SYMP) at both strong and weak couplings. We find that the shear viscosity due to the photon-parton scattering up to the leading order of electromagnetic coupling is suppressed when the coupling of the QGP/SYMP is increased, which stems from the blue-shift of the thermal-photon spectrum at strong coupling. In addition, the shear viscosity rapidly increases near the deconfinement transition in a phenomenological model analogous to the QGP.
Strongly coupled quantum fluids are found in different forms, including ultracold Fermi gases or tiny droplets of extremely hot Quark-Gluon Plasma. Although the systems differ in temperature by many orders of magnitude, they exhibit a similar almost inviscid fluid dynamical behavior. In this work, we summarize some of the recent theoretical developments toward better understanding this property in cold Fermi gases at and near unitarity.
Ultrarelativistic collisions between heavy nuclei briefly generate the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), a new state of matter characterized by deconfined partons last seen microseconds after the Big Bang. The properties of the QGP are of intense interest, and a large community has developed over several decades, to produce, measure and understand this primordial plasma. The plasma is now recognized to be a strongly-coupled fluid with remarkable properties, and hydrodynamics is commonly used to quantify and model the system. An important feature of any fluid is its vorticity, related to the local angu…
In this dissertation we use the gauge/gravity duality approach to study the dynamics of strongly coupled non-Abelian plasmas. Ultimately, we want to understand the properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), whose scientifc interest by the scientific community escalated exponentially after its discovery in the 2000's through the collision of ultrarelativistic heavy ions. One can enrich the dynamics of the QGP by adding an external field, such as the baryon chemical potential (needed to study the QCD phase diagram), or a magnetic field. In this dissertation, we choose to investigate the magneti…
By finding rare (but not exponentially rare) large-angle deflections of partons within a jet produced in a heavy ion collision, or of such a jet itself, experimentalists can find the weakly coupled short-distance quark and gluon particles (scatterers) within the strongly coupled liquid quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in heavy ion collisions. This is the closest one can come to probing QGP via a scattering experiment and ultimately learning how a strongly coupled liquid emerges from an asymptotically free gauge theory. The short-distance, particulate, structure of liquid QGP can be revealed i…
The nature of chiral phase transition for two flavor QCD is an interesting but unresolved problem. One of the most intriguing issues is whether or not the anomalous U(1) symmetry in the flavor sector is effectively restored along with the chiral symmetry. This may determine the universality class of the chiral phase transition. Since the physics near the chiral phase transition is essentially non-perturbative, we employ first principles lattice techniques to address this issue. We use overlap fermions, which have exact chiral symmetry on the lattice, to probe the anomalous U(1) symmetry violat…
We review the transport properties of the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in heavy-ion collisions at ultrarelativistic energies, i.e. out-of equilibrium, and compare them to the equilibrium properties. We study the transport coefficients such as the ratio of shear…
A thermodynamic quantum many-body $T$-matrix approach is employed to study the spectral and transport properties of the quark-gluon plasma at moderate temperatures where nonperturbative effects are essential. For the partonic two-body interaction we utilize a QCD-inspired Hamiltonian whose color forces are motivated by the heavy-quark (HQ) limit including remnants of the confining force, and augmented by relativistic corrections. We solve the in-medium parton propagators and $T$-matrices selfconsistently and resum the skeleton diagrams for the equation of state (EoS) to all orders thereby acco…
We compute for the first time the suppression of bottomonia in a strongly coupled QGP and compare the results to those from a weakly coupled QGP. Using imaginary time techniques we numerically determine the real and imaginary parts of the ground state binding energy of the bottomonia in one potential computed from AdS/CFT and another computed from pQCD. We then use these binding energies in a suppression model to determine the $Υ$(1S) nuclear modification factor in $\sqrt{s}_{NN}=2.76$ TeV Pb+Pb collisions. AdS/CFT significantly overpredicts the suppression compared to data, although the predi…
The thermal-photon emission from strongly coupled gauge theories at finite temperature is calculated by using holographic models for QCD in the Veneziano limit (V-QCD). These emission rates are then embedded in hydrodynamic simulations combined with prompt photons from hard scattering and the thermal photons from hadron gas to analyze the spectra and anisotropic flow of direct photons at RHIC and LHC. The results from different sources responsible for the thermal photons in the quark gluon plasma (QGP) including the weakly coupled QGP (wQGP) from perturbative calculations, strongly coupled $\m…
The evaluation of quarkonium regeneration in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions (URHICs) requires the knowledge of the heavy-quark phase space distributions in the expanding quark-gluon plasma (QGP) fireball. We employ a semi-classical charmonium transport approach where regeneration processes explicitly account for the time-dependent spectra of charm quarks via Langevin simulations of their diffusion. The inelastic charmonium rates and charm-quark transport coefficients are computed from the same charm-medium interaction. The latter is modeled by perturbative rates, augmented with a $K$-f…
We extend the effective dynamical quasiparticle model (DQPM) - constructed for the description of non-perturbative QCD phenomena of the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (QGP) - to large baryon chemical potentials, $μ_B$, including a critical end-point and a 1st order phase transition. The DQPM description of quarks and gluons is based on partonic propagators with complex selfenergies where the real part of the selfenergies is related to the quasiparticle mass and the imaginary part to a finite width of their spectral functions. In DQPM the determination of complex selfenergies for the p…

The study of transport coefficients of strongly interacting matter got impetus after the discovery of perfect fluid ever created at ultrarelativistic heavy ion collision experiments. In this article, we have calculated one such coefficient viz. electrical conductivity of the quark gluon plasma (QGP) phase which exhibits a momentum anisotropy. Relativistic Boltzmann's kinetic equation has been solved in the relaxation-time approximation to obtain the electrical conductivity. We have used the quasiparticle description to define the basic properties of QGP. We have compared our model results with…
The strong suppression of bottomonia production in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions is a smoking gun for the creation of a deconfined quark-gluon plasma (QGP). In this proceedings contribution, I review recent work that aims to provide a more comprehensive and systematic understanding of bottomonium dynamics in the QGP through the use of pNRQCD and an open quantum systems approach. This approach allows one to evolve the heavy-quarkonium reduced density matrix, taking into account non-unitary effective Hamiltonian evolution of the wave-function and quantum jumps between different angular…

Lattice data for the QCD equation of state and the baryon susceptibility near the crossover phase transition (at zero baryon density) are used to determine the input parameters of a 5-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton holographic model that provides a consistent holographic framework to study both equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium properties of a hot and {\it baryon rich} strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (QGP). We compare our holographic equation of state computed at nonzero baryon chemical potential, $μ_B$, with recent lattice calculations and find quantitative agreement for the pressu…
