In this article we present the first results on domain decomposition methods for nonlocal operators. We present a nonlocal variational formulation for these operators and establish the well-posedness of associated boundary value problems, proving a nonlocal Poincaré inequality. To determine the conditioning of the discretized operator, we prove a spectral equivalence which leads to a mesh size independent upper bound for the condition number of the stiffness matrix. We then introduce a nonlocal two-domain variational formulation utilizing nonlocal transmission conditions, and prove equivalence with the single-domain formulation. A nonlocal Schur complement is introduced. We establish condition number bounds for the nonlocal stiffness and Schur complement matrices. Supporting numerical experiments demonstrating the conditioning of the nonlocal one- and two-domain problems are presented.
We study a natural alternating method of Schwarz type (domain decomposition) for certain class of couplings between local and nonlocal operators. We show that our method fits into Lion's framework and prove, as a consequence, convergence in both, the continuous and the discrete settings.
We propose a domain decomposition method for the efficient simulation of nonlocal problems. Our approach is based on a multi-domain formulation of a nonlocal diffusion problem where the subdomains share "nonlocal" interfaces of the size of the nonlocal horizon. This system of nonlocal equations is first rewritten in terms of minimization of a nonlocal energy, then discretized with a meshfree approximation and finally solved via a Lagrange multiplier approach in a way that resembles the finite element tearing and interconnect method. Specifically, we propose a distributed projected gradient alg…
In this paper, we study a nonlocal variational problem which consists of minimizing in $L^2$ the sum of a quadratic data fidelity and a regularization term corresponding to the $L^p$-norm of the nonlocal gradient. In particular, we study convergence of the numerical solution to a discrete version of this nonlocal variational problem to the unique solution of the continuum one. To do so, we derive an error bound and highlight the role of the initial data and the kernel governing the nonlocal interactions. When applied to variational problem on graphs, this error bound allows us to show the cons…
A rigorous mathematical framework is provided for a substructuring-based domain-decomposition approach for nonlocal problems that feature interactions between points separated by a finite distance. Here, by substructuring it is meant that a traditional geometric configuration for local partial differential equation problems is used in which a computational domain is subdivided into non-overlapping subdomains. In the nonlocal setting, this approach is substructuring-based in the sense that those subdomains interact with neighboring domains over interface regions having finite volume, in contras…
Casting nonlocal problems in variational form and discretizing them with the finite element (FE) method facilitates the use of nonlocal vector calculus to prove well-posedeness, convergence, and stability of such schemes. Employing an FE method also facilitates meshing of complicated domain geometries and coupling with FE methods for local problems. However, nonlocal weak problems involve the computation of a double-integral, which is computationally expensive and presents several challenges. In particular, the inner integral of the variational form associated with the stiffness matrix is defi…
We prove consistence, convergence and stability of the Domain Decomposition in space and time method of 4DVAR Data Assimilation problem. We introduce the condition number of the problem and validate the theoretical analysis through numerical results
In this work, we develop novel structure-preserving numerical schemes for a class of nonlinear Fokker--Planck equations with nonlocal interactions. Such equations can cover many cases of importance, such as porous medium equations with external potentials, optimal transport problems, and aggregation-diffusion models. Based on the Energetic Variational Approach, a trajectory equation is first derived by using the balance between the maximal dissipation principle and least action principle. By a convex-splitting technique, we propose energy dissipating numerical schemes for the trajectory equati…
We introduce a new domain decomposition strategy for time harmonic Maxwell's equations that is valid in the case of automatically generated subdomain partitions with possible presence of cross-points. The convergence of the algorithm is guaranteed and we present a complete analysis of the matrix form of the method. The method involves transmission matrices responsible for imposing coupling between subdomains. We discuss the choice of such matrices, their construction and the impact of this choice on the convergence of the domain decomposition algorithm. Numerical results and algorithms are pro…

We propose an efficient solver for saddle point problems arising from finite element approximations of nonlocal multi-phase Allen--Cahn variational inequalities. The solver is seen to behave mesh independently and to have only a very mild dependence on the number of phase field variables. In addition we prove convergence, in three GMRES iterations, of the approximation of the two phase problem, regardless of mesh size or interfacial width. Numerical results are presented that illustrate the competitiveness of this approach.
In this article, we consider fast direct solvers for nonlocal operators. The pivotal idea is to combine a wavelet representation of the system matrix, yielding a quasi-sparse matrix, with the nested dissection ordering scheme. The latter drastically reduces the fill-in during the factorization of the system matrix by means of a Cholesky decomposition or an LU decomposition, respectively. This way, we end up with the exact inverse of the compressed system matrix with only a moderate increase of the number of nonzero entries in the matrix. To illustrate the efficacy of the approach, we conduct n…
The derivation of nonlocal strong forms for many physical problems remains cumbersome in traditional methods. In this paper, we apply the variational principle/weighted residual method based on nonlocal operator method for the derivation of nonlocal forms for elasticity, thin plate, gradient elasticity, electro-magneto-elasticity and phase field fracture method. The nonlocal governing equations are expressed as integral form on support and dual-support. The first example shows that the nonlocal elasticity has the same form as dual-horizon non-ordinary state-based peridynamics. The derivation i…
In this paper, we propose a novel overlapping domain decomposition method that can be applied to various problems in variational imaging such as total variation minimization. Most of recent domain decomposition methods for total variation minimization adopt the Fenchel--Rockafellar duality, whereas the proposed method is based on the primal formulation. Thus, the proposed method can be applied not only to total variation minimization but also to those with complex dual problems such as higher order models. In the proposed method, an equivalent formulation of the model problem with parallel str…

We formulate a general framework for hp-variational physics-informed neural networks (hp-VPINNs) based on the nonlinear approximation of shallow and deep neural networks and hp-refinement via domain decomposition and projection onto space of high-order polynomials. The trial space is the space of neural network, which is defined globally over the whole computational domain, while the test space contains the piecewise polynomials. Specifically in this study, the hp-refinement corresponds to a global approximation with local learning algorithm that can efficiently localize the network parameter …
