Intraband cyclotron resonance (CR) transitions of a two-electron quantum dot containing a single magnetic ion is investigated for different Coulomb interaction strengths and different positions of the magnetic ion. In contrast to the usual parabolic quantum dots where CR is independent of the number of electrons, we found here that due to the presence of the magnetic ion Kohn's theorem no longer holds and CR is different for systems with different number of electrons and different effective electron-electron Coulomb interaction strength. Many-body effects result in \emph{shifts in the transition energies} and \emph{change the number of CR lines}. The position of the magnetic ion inside the quantum dot affects the structure of the CR spectrum by changing the position and the number of crossings and anti-crossings in the transition energies and oscillator strengths.
A set of theoretical results on infrared absorption and inelastic (Raman) scattering of light in semiconductor quantum dots is reviewed. When it is possible, qualitative comparisons with recent experimental results are presented.
The skyrmionic mass was calculated in the main order of the gradient expansion in derivatives of the rotation matrix. The mass is proportinal to the topological invariant which is the absolut value of the degree of the mapping. The coefficient is defined by the exchange interaction. The charged skyrmions in magnetic field give rise to a special branch of cyclotron resonance with the frequency defined by the exchange interaction and have the corresponding term in their minimal energy. The possibility of an extra bound electron and neutral skyrmions is discussed.
The cyclotron resonance of the correlated two-dimentional electrons on liquid helium in high magnetic fields is investigated on the basis of the newly developed theory. Electrons are assumed to form a Wigner crystal, and the electron correlation effect is taken into account through the self-consistently determined Wigner phonons, where the electron-electron interaction, the electron-ripplon and electron-vapor atom scatterings are considered on the same footing. The numerical calculations show a very good agreement with experiments without any fitting parameters.
To date transport measurements of topological insulators have been dominated by the conductivity of the bulk, leading to substantial difficulties in resolving the properties of the surface. To this end, we use high magnetic field, rf- and microwave-spectroscopy to selectively couple to the surface conductivity of Bi$_2$Se$_3$ at high frequency. In the frequency range of a few GHz we observe a crossover from quantum oscillations indicative of a small 3D Fermi surface, to cyclotron resonance indicative of a 2D surface state.
For high-mobility two-dimensional electrons at a GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction, we have studied, both experimentally and theoretically, the recently discovered giant magnetoresistance oscillations with nearly zero resistance in the oscillation minima which appear under microwave radiation. We have proposed a model based on nonequilibrium occupation of Landau levels caused by radiation which describes the oscillation picture.
Experimental measurements of photoresistivity under terahertz (THz) radiation in low magnetic fields at conditions of cyclotron resonance (CR) in two-dimensional electron system (2DES) of GaAs/AlGaAs nanostructures are presented and discussed. We report the experimental discovery of CR-vanishing effect (CRV) in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures with high mobility as a well-defined gap on CR-line that is independent on incident THz power. Our analysis shows that the CRV may appear in systems with well correlated state of 2D electrons such as plasma waves and others. Fundamental nature of these corre…
I develop a theory of combined exciton-cyclotron resonance (ExCR) in a low-density two-dimensional electron gas in high magnetic fields. In the presence of excess electrons an incident photon creates an exciton and simultaneously excites one electron to higher-lying Landau levels. I derive exact ExCR selection rules that follow from the existing dynamical symmetries, magnetic translations and rotations about the magnetic field axis. The nature of the final states in the ExCR is elucidated. The relation between ExCR and shake-up processes is discussed. The double-peak ExCR structure for transit…
Using the kinetic approach based on the semiclassical Boltzmann transport equation with constant relaxation time, we theoretically studied the Stark-cyclotron resonance in an array of Carbon Nanotubes (CNs). Exact expression for the current density was obtained. We noted that Stark-cyclotron resonance occurs when the Larmor frequency coincides with the Stark frequency. A coincidence of these frequencies produce resonance.
We study a single-photon super-radiance under the conditions of cyclotron resonance in a perfect single-crystal p-type semiconductor film with cubic structure. We show that the rate of super-radiant emission scales with tjhe film area. which allows one to specify the size of the film at which the probability of a single-photon super-radiance becomes much greater than the probabilities of other scattering channels. The power of super-radiant emission depends only on three fundamental constants: the electron charge q_{e}, the speed of light c, the electron mass m_{e}, and on the electric- to mag…
In framework of classical consideration of electron trajectories in crossed electric and magnetic fields and conductivity of electron system on cyclotron resonance in single layer graphene possibility to achieve cyclotron lasing in hexagonal boron nitride single layer graphene sandwiches is discussed. By simplified consideration with known data on scattering rate in the sandwiches it is demonstrated that the continuing wave laser action can be achieved in high quality sandwiches at room temperature at frequencies above one tera hertz in magnetic field above one Tesla.
We report studies of cyclotron resonance in monolayer graphene. Cyclotron resonance is detected using the photoconductive response of the sample for several different Landau level occupancies. The experiments measure an electron velocity at the K- (Dirac) point of $c_{K}^{*}$ = 1.093 x 10$^{6}$ ms$^{-1}$ and in addition detect a significant asymmetry between the electron and hole bands, leading to a difference in the electron and hole velocities of 5% by energies of 125 meV away from the Dirac point.
The driving of charge carriers confined in a quantum well lacking the center of space inversion by an alternating electric field leads to the formation of a direct electric current. We develop a microscopic theory of such a quantum ratchet effect for quantum wells subjected to a static magnetic field. We show that the ratchet current emerges for a linearly polarized alternating electric field as well as a rotating electric field and drastically increases at the cyclotron resonance conditions. For the magnetic field tilted with respect to the quantum well normal, the ratchet current contains an…
We report on the observation of the cyclotron-resonance-assisted photon drag effect. Resonant photocurrent is detected in InSb/InAlSb quantum wells structures subjected to a static magnetic field and excited by terahertz radiation at oblique incidence. The developed theory based on Boltzmann's kinetic equation is in a good agreement with the experimental findings. We show that the resonant photocurrent originates from the transfer of photon momentum to free electrons drastically enhanced at cyclotron resonance.
We study the cyclotron resonance in the electron-hole joint Fermi surface of a type-II Weyl semimetal. In magnetic field, the electron and hole pockets touching at the Weyl node are hybridized to form quantized Landau levels corresponding to semiclassical 8-shaped orbits. We calculate the dynamical conductivities for the electric fields oscillating in $x$ and $y$-directions and find that the resonant frequencies in $x$ and $y$ differ by the factor of two, reflecting to the figure-of-eight electron motion in the real space. The peculiar anisotropy in the cyclotron resonance serves as a unique c…
We study microwave photoresistivity oscillations in a high mobility two-dimensional electron system subject to strong dc electric fields. We find that near the second subharmonic of the cyclotron resonance the frequency of the resistivity oscillations with dc electric field is twice the frequency of the oscillations at the cyclotron resonance, its harmonics, or in the absence of microwave radiation. This observation is discussed in terms of the microwave-induced sidebands in the density of states and the interplay between different scattering processes in the separated Landau level regime.
It is established that cyclotron resonance (CR) in a high-quality GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron system (2DES) originates as a \textit{pure} resonance, that does not hybridize with dimensional magnetoplasma excitations. The magnetoplasma resonances form a fine structure of the CR. The observed fine structure of the CR results from the interplay between coherent radiative and incoherent collisional mechanisms of 2D plasma relaxation. We show that the range of 2DES filling factors from which the phenomenon arises is intimately connected to the fundamental fine-structure constant.
Using ultrahigh magnetic fields up to 170 T and polarized midinfrared radiation with tunable wavelengths from 9.22 to 10.67 um, we studied cyclotron resonance in large-area graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition. Circular-polarization dependent studies reveal strong p-type doping for as-grown graphene, and the dependence of the cyclotron resonance on radiation wavelength allows for a determination of the Fermi energy. Thermal annealing shifts the Fermi energy to near the Dirac point, resulting in the simultaneous appearance of hole and electron cyclotron resonance in the magnetic quantum …
Resonant microwave absorption of a two-dimensional electron system in an AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure excited by a near-field technique was investigated. Along with collective magnetoplasmon modes, we observed resonance that precisely follows the cyclotron resonance (CR) position and revealed no signs of collective plasma depolarization shift. We show that the discovered CR mode is absent in the Faraday geometry, and is localized at the edge of the exciting metal electrode. Such behavior points in favor of the single-particle Azbel'-Kaner nature of the discovered resonance.
Recently Russell et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 047401 (2018)] have reported a clear signal of many-particle contributions to cyclotron resonance in high-mobility hBN-encapsulated graphene, observing significant variations of resonance energies as a function of the filling factor $ν$ for a series of interband channels. To elucidate their results, Coulombic contributions to the Landau-level spectra and cyclotron resonance in graphene are examined with a possible band gap taken into account and with emphasis on revealing electron-hole ($eh$) conjugation symmetry underlying such level and resonanc…
Interaction driven integer quantum Hall effects are anticipated in graphene bilayers because of the near-degeneracy of the eight Landau levels which appear near the neutral system Fermi level. We predict that an intra-Landau-level cyclotron resonance signal will appear at some odd-integer filling factors, accompanied by collective modes which are nearly gapless and have approximate $k^{3/2}$ dispersion. We speculate on the possibility of unususal localization physics associated with these modes.
We show that the the cyclotron resonance in a two-dimensional electron gas has non-trivial properties if the correlation length of the disorder is larger than the de Broglie wavelength: (a) the lineshape assumes three different forms in strong, intermediate, and weak magnetic fields (b) at the transition from the intermediate to the weak fields the linewidth suddenly collapses due to an explosive growth in the fraction of electrons with a diffusive-type dynamics.
We demonstrate the detection of cyclotron resonance in graphene by using a photo-induced thermionic emission mechanism at the graphene/MoS2 van der Waals (vdW) Schottky junction. At cyclotron resonance in Landau-quantized graphene, the infrared light is absorbed and an electron-hole pair is generated. When the energy of a photoexcited electron exceeds the band offset energy at the graphene/MoS2 interface, the electron transfer occurs from graphene to the conduction band of MoS2, and the hole remains in graphene. This creates an electron-hole separation at the graphene/MoS2 interface at cyclotr…
Terahertz spectroscopy experiments at magnetic fields and low temperatures were carried out on samples of different gate shapes processed on a high electron mobility GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. For a given radiation frequency, multiple magnetoplasmon resonances were observed with a dispersion relation described within a local approximation of the magnetoconductivity tensor. The second harmonic of the cyclotron resonance was observed and its appearance was interpreted as resulting from a high frequency, inhomogeneous electromagnetic field on the border of a two-dimensional electron gas with a …
Two-dimensional electron gasses (2DEG) in InAs quantum wells proximitized by aluminum are promising platforms for topological qubits based on Majorana zero modes. However, there are still substantial uncertainties associated with the nature of the electronic states at the interfaces of these systems. It is challenging to probe the properties of these hybridized states as they are buried under a relatively thick aluminum layer. In this work, we have investigated a range of InAs/In$ _{1-\text{x}} $Ga$ _\text{x} $As heterostructures with Al overlayers using high precision time-domain THz spectros…
Cyclotron resonance in highly doped graphene has been explored using infrared magnetotransmission. Contrary to previous work, which only focused on the magneto-optical properties of graphene in the quantum regime, here we study the quasi-classical response of this system. We show that it has a character of classical cyclotron resonance, with an energy which is linear in the applied magnetic field and with an effective cyclotron mass defined by the position of the Fermi level m = E_F/v_F^2.
The usual cyclotron resonance occurs at ω_c=eB/m*c which is independent of spin. The new resonances depend on spin. The new resonances occur at ω_{c\pm}=(1/2)g_{\pm}eB/m*c where (1/2)g_{\pm}= {\it l}+(1/2)\pm s/(2{\it l}+1). The energy in the centre of two new frequencies varies as the square root of the 2-dimensional electrons due to spin excess in the Gaussian model. The frequencies ω_{c\pm} are linearly proportional to the magnetic field except near crossing point where the linear combination of wave functions must be made.

Experimental results on the absolute magneto-transmission of a series of high density, high mobility GaAs quantum wells are compared with the predictions of a recent magnetoplasmon theory for values of the filling factor above 2. We show that the magnetoplasmon picture can explain the non-linear features observed in the magnetic field evolution of the cyclotron resonance energies and of the absorption oscillator strength. This provides experimental evidence that inter Landau level excitations probed by infrared spectroscopy need to be considered as many body excitations in terms of magnetoplas…
Cyclotron resonance in graphene is studied with focus on many-body corrections to the resonance energies, which evade Kohn's theorem. The genuine many-body corrections turn out to derive from vacuum polarization, specific to graphene, which diverges at short wavelengths. Special emphasis is placed on the need for renormalization, which allows one to determine many-body corrections uniquely from one resonance to another. For bilayer graphene, in particular, both intralayer and interlayer coupling strengths undergo infinite renormalization; as a result, the renormalized velocity and interlayer c…
We report the first observation of an oscillatory photo-conductivity response at the cyclotron-resonance harmonics in a non-degenerate 2D electron system formed on the free surface of liquid helium. The dc conductivity oscillations are detected for electrons occupying the ground surface subband. Their period is governed by the ratio of the microwave frequency to the cyclotron frequency. Theoretical analysis of the photo-response in a strongly interacting electron system indicates that the observation can be explained by an oscillatory correction to the electron distribution function that appea…
We construct a low-temperature microwave waveguide interferometer for measuring high-frequency properties of two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs). Coupled plasmon-cyclotron resonance (PCR) spectra are used to extract effective mass, bulk plasmon frequency, and carrier relaxation times. In contrast to traditional transmission spectroscopy, this method does not require sample preparation and is nondestructive. PCR signals can be resolved with a microwave power source as low as 10 nW. We observe PCR in the multi-photon transition regime, which has been proposed to be relevant to the microwave-i…
We consider the classical motion of a massless quasi-particle in a magnetic field and under a weak electromagnetic radiation with the frequency $ω$. Due to the non-parabolic, linear energy dispersion, the particle responds not only at the frequency $ω$ but generates a broad frequency spectrum around it. The linewidth of the cyclotron resonance turns out to be very broad even in a perfectly pure material which allows one to explain recent experimental data in graphene. It is concluded that the linear response theory does not work in graphene in finite magnetic fields.
Cyclotron-resonance (CR) measurements on two-dimensional (2D) electrons in AlGaN/GaN heterojunctions reveal large splittings (up to 2 meV) of the CR line for all investigated densities, $n_{2D}$, from 1 to $4\times 10^{12}cm^{-2}$ over wide ranges of magnetic field. The features resemble a level anti-crossing and imply a strong interaction with an unknown excitation of the solid. The critical energy of the splitting varies from 5 to 12 meV and as $\sqrt{n_{2D}}$. The phenomenon resembles data from AlGaAs/GaAs whose origin remains unresolved. It highlights a lack of basic understanding of a ver…
In a magnetic field bilayer graphene supports, at the lowest Landau level, eight characteristic zero-energy levels with an extra twofold degeneracy in Landau orbitals $n=\{0,1\}$. They, under general one-body and many-body interactions, evolve into pseudo-zero-mode (PZM) levels. A close look is made into the detailed structure and characteristics of such PZM levels and cyclotron resonance they host, with full account taken of spin splitting, interlayer bias, weak electron-hole asymmetry and Coulomb interactions. It is pointed out that the PZM levels generally undergo orbital level mixing (in o…
The Dicke model of cavity quantum electrodynamics is approximately realized in condensed matter when the cyclotron transition of a two-dimensional electron gas is nearly resonant with a cavity photon mode. We point out that in the strong coupling limit the Dicke model of cavity cyclotron resonance must be supplemented by a term that is quadratic in the cavity photon field and suppresses the model's transition to a super-radiant state. We develop the theory of graphene cavity cyclotron resonance and show that the quadratic term, which is absent in graphene's low-energy Dirac model Hamiltonian, …
Cyclotron resonance of a Landau-quantized graphene can absorb significant amount of infrared light. However, application of this phenomenon to the photodetector had been limited due to the lack of efficient photon to charge conversion scheme. Here, we demonstrate the detection of cyclotron resonance in a partially metal-masked monolayer graphene two-terminal device using photo-Nernst effect. Due to the presence of the mask, incident infrared light is irradiated on only one-half of the graphene channel. This partial irradiation creates a temperature gradient perpendicular to the graphene channe…
We investigate a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) under microwave illumination at cyclotron resonance subharmonics. The 2DES carries sufficient direct current, $I$, that the differential resistivity oscillates as $I$ is swept. At magnetic fields sufficient to resolve individual Landau levels, we find the number of oscillations within an $I$ range systematically changes with increasing microwave power. Microwave absorption and emission of $N$ photons, where $N$ is controlled by the microwave power, describes our observations in the framework of the displacement mechanism of impurity scatt…
Cyclotron-resonance (CR) spectra of a gas of interacting polarons confined in a GaAs/AlAs quantum well are theoretically investigated taking into account the magneto-plasmon-phonon mixing and band nonparabolicity. Contributions of different magneto-plasmon-phonon modes to the total magneto-polaron coupling strength are investigated as a function of the electron density. It is confirmed theoretically, that the resonant magneto-polaron coupling in a high-density GaAs/AlAs quantum well occurs near the GaAs TO-phonon frequency rather than near the GaAs LO-phonon frequency. Calculated CR spectra ar…
We perform a direct study of the magnitude of the anomalous splitting in the cyclotron resonance (CR) of a two-dimensional electron system (2DES) as a function of sample disorder. In a series of AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wells, identical except for a range of carbon doping in the well, we find the CR splitting to vanish at high sample mobilities but to increase dramatically with increasing impurity density and electron scattering rates. This observation lends strong support to the conjecture that the non-zero wavevector, roton-like minimum in the dispersion of 2D magnetoplasmons comes into resonance…
We report on absolute magneto-transmission experiments on highly-doped quasi-free-standing epitaxial graphene targeting the classical-to-quantum crossover of the cyclotron resonance. This study allows us to directly extract the carrier density and also other relevant quantities such as the quasiparticle velocity and the Drude weight, which is precisely measured from the strength of the cyclotron resonance. We find that the Drude weight is renormalized with respect to its non-interacting (or random-phase-approximation) value and that the renormalization is tied to the quasiparticle velocity enh…
We present theoretical calculations for the cyclotron resonance and various magnetoplasmon modes of a Coulomb interacting two-dimensional GaAs electron gas (2DEG) modulated as a lateral superlattice of quantum dots subjected to an external perpendicular constant magnetic field. We use a real-time excitation approach based on the Liouville-von Neumann equation for the density operator, that can go beyond linear response delivering information of all longitudinal and transverse collective modes of interest to the same order. We perform an extensive analysis of the coexisting collective modes due…
A recently found metal-insulator transition in a model for cyclotron resonance in a two-dimensional periodic potential is investigated by means of spectral properties of the time evolution operator. The previously found dynamical signatures of the transition are explained in terms of avoided band crossings due to the change of the external electric field. The occurrence of a cross-like transport is predicted and numerically confirmed.
Recent experiments on microwave-irradiated high-mobility two-dimensional electron systems revealed a novel photoresistivity peak in the vicinity of the second cyclotron resonance harmonic. Here we report on the nonlinear transport measurements and demonstrate that the peak can be induced by modest dc fields and that its position is not affected even by strong dc fields, in contrast to microwave-induced resistance oscillations that shift to higher magnetic fields. These findings reinforce the notion that the peak cannot be described by existing models and provides important constraints for furt…
Cyclotron resonance in bilayer graphene is studied with weak electron-hole asymmetry, suggested by experiment, taken into account and with the focus on many-body corrections that evade Kohn's theorem. It is shown by direct calculation that the theory remains renormalizable to O(e^2) in the presence of electron-hole asymmetry parameters, and a general program to carry out renormalization for graphene under a magnetic field is presented. Inclusion of electron-hole asymmetry in part improves the theoretical fit to the existing data and the data appear to indicate the running of the renormalized v…
We have carried out an ultrahigh-field cyclotron resonance study of p-type In1-xMnxAs films, with Mn composition x ranging from 0% to 2.5%, grown on GaAs by low-temperature molecular-beam epitaxy. Pulsed magnetic fields up to 500 T were used to make cyclotron resonance observable in these low-mobility samples. The clear observation of hole cyclotron resonance is direct evidence of the existence of a large number of itinerant, effective-mass-type holes rather than localized d-like holes. It further suggests that the p-d exchange mechanism is more favorable than the double exchange mechanism in …
The magnetoresistance oscillations, which occur in a two-dimensional electron system exposed to strong microwave radiation when the microwave frequency $ω$ coincides with the n-th subharmonic of the cyclotron frequency $ω_c$ have been investigated for n = 2, 3 and 4. It is shown that these subharmonic features can be explained within a non-equilibrium energy distribution function picture without invoking multi-photon absorption processes. The existence of a frequency threshold above which such oscillations disappear lends further support to this explanation.
We have carried out an ultrahigh field cyclotron resonance study of $n$-type In$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As films, with Mn composition $x$ ranging from 0 to 12%, grown on GaAs by low temperature molecular beam epitaxy. We observe that the electron cyclotron resonance peak shifts to lower field with increasing $x$. A detailed comparison of experimental results with calculations based on a modified Pidgeon-Brown model allows us to estimate the {\em s-d} and {\em p-d} exchange coupling constants, $α$ and $β$, for this important III-V dilute magnetic semiconductor system.
Far-infrared cyclotron resonance photoconductivity (CRP) is investigated in HgTe quantum wells (QWs) of various widths grown on (013) oriented GaAs substrates. It is shown that CRP is caused by the heating of two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG). From the resonance magnetic field strength effective masses and their dependence on the carrier concentration is obtained. We found that the effective mass in each sample slightly increases from the value (0.0260 \pm 0.0005)m_0 at N_s = 2.2x10^11 cm^(-2) to (0.0335 \pm 0.0005)m_0 at N_s = 9.6x10^11 cm^(-2). Compared to determination of effective masses…
We report on a tunable - by magnetic field and gate voltage - conversion of terahertz radiation into a dc current in spatially modulated bilayer graphene. We experimentally demonstrate that the underlying physics is related to the so-called ratchet effect. Our key findings are the direct observation of a sharp cyclotron resonance in the photocurrent and the demonstration of two effects caused by electron-electron interaction: the plasmonic splitting of the resonance due to long-range Coulomb coupling and the partial suppression of its second harmonic due to fast interparticle collisions. We de…
We have examined the claim made by Kukushkin et al that they have observed the cyclotron resonance of composite fermions. We find that the claim made is false and there is no justification for making false reports. The microwave absorption in cyclotron levels is observed and it is claimed that CF has been seen. Since "even flux quanta attachment to one electron" has not been seen, we find that Kukushkin's claim to have seen the CF is false. Since attachment of flux quanta to electrons can be an important discovery, Kukushkin et al have made the claim of seeing the CF without actually identifyi…
We study the infrared cyclotron resonance of high mobility monolayer graphene encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride, and simultaneously observe several narrow resonance lines due to interband Landau level transitions. By holding the magnetic field strength, $B$, constant while tuning the carrier density, $n$, we find the transition energies show a pronounced non-monotonic dependence on the Landau level filling factor, $ν\propto n/B$. This constitutes direct evidence that electron-electron interactions contribute to the Landau level transition energies in graphene, beyond the single-particle …
We measure the Hall conductivity of a two-dimensional electron gas formed at a GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction in the terahertz regime close to the cyclotron resonance frequency by employing a highly sensitive Faraday rotation method coupled with electrical gating of the sample to change the electron density. We observe clear plateau-and step-like features in the Faraday rotation angle vs. electron density and magnetic field (Landau-level filling factor), which are the high frequency manifestation of quantum Hall plateaus - a signature of topologically protected edge states. The results are compare…
We investigate the superradiance effects in three-dimensional topological insulator HgTe with conducting surface states. We demonstrate that the superradiance can be explained using the classical electrodynamic approach. Experiments using the continuous-wave spectroscopy allowed to separate the energy losses in the system into intrinsic and radiation losses, respectively. These results demonstrate that the superradiance effects are not sensitive to the details of the band structure of the material.
The far-infrared absorption in two-dimensional electron layers subject to magnetic field of general orientation was studied theoretically. The Kubo formula was employed to derive diagonal components of the magneto-conductivity tensor of two-dimensional electron single-layers and double-layers. A parabolic quantum well was used to model single-layer systems. Bilayer systems were represented by a pair of tunnel-coupled, strictly two-dimensional quantum wells. Obtained results were compared to experimental data.
We study the dynamical properties of an electron gas scattered by impenetrable antidots in the presence of a strong magnetic field. We find that the lineshape of the cyclotron resonance is very different from the Lorentzian and is not characterized by the Drude scattering rate. We show that the dissipative dynamical response of skipping orbits, $S_c(ω)$, is broadened on a scale of the cyclotron frequency $ω_c$ and has a sharp dip $\propto |ω-ω_c|$. For small antidots, $S_c(ω)$ is strongly modulated with a period equal to $ω_c$ and has sharp square-root singularities for a series of resonant fr…
We theoretically predict instability of a zero-dc-current state of the two-dimensional electron system formed on the surface of liquid helium induced by the cyclotron resonance (CR). This conclusion follows from the theoretical analysis of the dc magnetoconductivity which takes into account the contribution from radiation in an exact way. A many-electron model of the dynamic structure factor of the 2D Coulomb liquid is used to describe the influence of strong internal forces acting between electrons. For low electron densities and high amplitudes of the microwave field, the dc magnetoconductiv…
Experiments on resonances of conduction electrons in InGaAs/InAlAs double quantum wells at megagauss magnetic fields in the Faraday geometry are reported. We observe new cyclotron resonances assisted by emission of InAs-like and GaAs-like optic phonons and a combined (cyclotron-spin) resonance assisted by emission of InAs-like phonon. The observations are very well described for three laser frequencies with the use of an eight-band (three level) $\textbf{k}\cdot \textbf{p}$ model, taking into account position- and energy-dependent effective masses and spin g-factors. It is indicated that the n…

We report on the observation of collective radiative decay, or superradiance, of cyclotron resonance (CR) in high-mobility two-dimensional electron gases in GaAs quantum wells using time-domain terahertz magnetospectroscopy. The decay rate of coherent CR oscillations increases linearly with the electron density in a wide range, which is a hallmark of superradiant damping. Our fully quantum mechanical theory provides a universal formula for the decay rate, which reproduces our experimental data without any adjustable parameter. These results firmly establish the many-body nature of CR decoheren…
The surface quantum Hall state, magneto-electric phenomena and their connection to axion electrodynamics have been studied intensively for topological insulators. One of the obstacles for observing such effects comes from nonzero conductivity of the bulk. To overcome this obstacle we propose to use an external magnetic field to suppress the conductivity of the bulk carriers. The magnetic field dependence of galvanomagnetic and electromagnetic responses of the whole system shows anomalies due to broken time-reversal symmetry of the surface quantum Hall state, which can be used for its detection…
