I propose to change the sign of the dilaton in the infrared~(IR) soft-wall AdS/QCD model, in order to implement confinement. The deformed model exhibits interesting properties, especially in describing chiral symmetry breaking. The expectation value of the scalar field $X$, which determines the quark mass and condensate, approaches a constant in the IR limit, rather than blows up in the original model. In contrast to the estimate in Ref. \cite{Shifman:2007xn}, this kind of solution will not lead to chiral symmetry restoration for highly-excited states, due to the property of the harmonic-oscillator equation. Instead, it will guarantee the Regge behavior of the axial meson spectrum, and also the pseudoscalar mesons. The value of the condensate can be fixed by requiring that the pion be massless in the chiral limit, but only under some approximation in the present model. We also find that, by relaxing the IR boundary conditions, the unphysical massless state in the vector channel can be eliminated.
We elaborate on the existence of a spurious massless scalar mode in the vector channel of soft-wall models with incorrectly chosen sign of the exponential profile defining the wall. We re-iterate the point made in our earlier paper and demonstrate that the presence of the mode is robust, depending only on the infra-red asymptotics of the wall. We also re-emphasize that desired confinement properties can be realized with the correct sign choice.
We study the properties of the dilaton in a soft-wall background using two solutions of the Einstein equations. These solutions contain an asymptotically AdS metric with a nontrivial scalar profile that causes both the spontaneous breaking of conformal invariance and the generation of a mass gap in the particle spectrum. We first present an analytic solution, using the superpotential method, that describes a CFT spontaneously broken by a finite dimensional operator in which a light dilaton mode appears in the spectrum. This represents a tuning in the vanishing of the quartic coupling in the ef…
Time-dependent domain wall solutions with infinitesimal thickness are obtained in the theory of a scalar field coupled to gravity with the dilaton, i.e. the Jordan-Brans-Dicke gravity. The value of the dilaton is determined in terms of the Brans-Dicke parameter $ω$. In particular, the solutions exist for any $ω>0$ and as $ω\to\infty$ we obtain new solutions in general relativity. They have horizons whose sizes depend on $ω$.
We present a solution of the five-dimensional gravity-dilaton-tachyon equations of motion with a pure AdS_5 metric and a quadratic dilaton and linear tachyon in conformal coordinates. This leads to an infrared soft wall model where the dilaton profile gives rise to linear Regge trajectories for the four-dimensional mass spectrum of the dual gauge theory. Even though our approach is phenomenological the scalar fields resemble the dilaton and the closed string tachyon of a non-critical string theory. Interestingly, the linear tachyon has the correct profile to imply that chiral symmetry is not r…
The class of static solutions found by Gibbons and Wells for dilaton-electrodynamics in flat spacetime, which describe nontopological strings and walls that trap magnetic flux, is extended to a class of dynamical solutions supporting arbitrarily large, nondissipative traveling waves, using techniques previously applied to global and local topological defects. These solutions can then be used in conjunction with S-duality to obtain more general solitonic solutions for various axidilaton-Maxwell theories. As an example, a set of dynamical solutions is found for axion, dilaton, and Maxwell fields…
We adopted the form of v.e.v. of the bulk scalar field proposed by P.Zhang in this paper, and changed the dilaton background from $e^{-κ^2z^2}$ to $e^{-κ^2z^2+αz}$ accordingly. The calculation shows that, as if we choose proper parameters, we can get a better result than both the present soft-wall models and the hard-wall model while keeping Regge behavior unchanged.
We discuss a holographic soft-wall model developed for the description of mesons and baryons with adjustable quantum numbers n, J, L, S. This approach is based on an action which describes hadrons with broken conformal invariance and which incorporates confinement through the presence of a background dilaton field. We show that in the case of the bound-state problem (hadronic mass spectrum) two versions of the model with a positive and negative dilaton profile are equivalent to each other by a special transformation of the bulk field. We also comment on recent works which discuss the dilaton s…
We study the soft behavior of two seemingly different particles that are both referred to as dilatons in the literature, namely the one that appears in theories of gravity and in string theory and the Nambu-Goldstone boson of spontaneously broken conformal invariance. Our primary result is the discovery of a soft theorem at subsubleading order for each dilaton, which in both cases contains the operator of special conformal transformations. Interesting similarities as well as differences between the dilaton soft theorems are discussed.
We study soft wall models that can embed the Standard Model and a naturally light dilaton. Exploiting the full capabilities of these models we identify the parameter space that allows to pass Electroweak Precision Tests with a moderate Kaluza-Klein scale, around $2$ TeV. We analyze the coupling of the dilaton with Standard Model (SM) fields in the bulk, and discuss two applications: i) Models with a light dilaton as the first particle beyond the SM pass quite easily all observational tests even with a dilaton lighter than the Higgs. However the possibility of a 125 GeV dilaton as a Higgs impos…
We study the phenomenology of the recently proposed modified version of the Soft-Wall model of holographic QCD with a negative dilaton profile. We investigate vector and scalar mesons, evaluating mass spectra, decay constants and two-point correlation functions. We then study chiral symmetry breaking and compute the coupling of a scalar meson with two pseudoscalars. Finally, we compare the results with the ones found in the literature in the positive-dilaton case.
Meson spectroscopy within the frame of the soft-wall AdS/QCD, became one of the most interesting topics of particle physics in the last six years. In this work we attempt a generalized parametric analysis of the background dilaton gauge field which previous studied by K.M.Keita and Y.H.Dicko. Aim is that using a positive z-depended dilaton gauge field and setting the appropriate parameters on it, we are able to reproduce the full rho vector meson mass spectrum. To reinforce the results, we compare the proposed parametric model with the experimental data. This comparison, returns in some cases …
A modified version of the usual soft wall quadratic dilaton, a dilaton which catches the variation of the proton mass inside nucleons in the nuclear medium is used. With this dilaton, called nuclear dilaton, we have calculated the electromagnetic form factors and magnetic moments associated with the in-medium proton following the AdS/QCD prescription.
We generalize the soft-wall and hard-wall models to a light-front holographic QCD model with a generic dilaton profile. The effective potential induced by a higher power dilaton profile is interpreted as a stronger color confinement at long distance, and it gradually evolves to the hard-wall model when the power increases to infinity. As an application, we investigate the exotic meson states recently discovered in experiments in the generic soft-wall model with a higher power dilaton profile, and the results are in agreement with the spectra of the exotic mesons. Our calculation indicates a we…
We study the temperature dependence of the $a_1$ meson-nucleon coupling constant in the framework of the soft-wall AdS/QCD model with thermal dilaton field. Profile functions for the axial-vector and fermion fields in the AdS-Schwarzschild metric are presented. It is constructed an interaction Lagrangian for the fermion-axial-vector-thermal dilaton fields system in the bulk of space-time. From this Lagrangian integral representation for the $g_{a_1NN}$ coupling constant is derived. The temperature dependence of this coupling constant is numerically analyzed.
Dynamic AdS/QCD is a modification of AdS/QCD that includes the running of the anomalous dimension of the q-bar q quark bilinear and in which the generation of the constituent quark mass plays the role of an IR wall. The model allows one to move away smoothly from the controlled spectrum of the N=2 super Yang-Mills theory of the D3/probe-D7 system to more QCD-like theories with chiral symmetry breaking. We investigate soft wall behaviour in the model that gives Regge trajectories with M_{n,s}^2 ~ n,s. To achieve these behaviours requires the quark's constituent mass to fall peculiarly sharply i…
We consider the Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system with an arbitrary kinetic gauge function and a dilaton potential. A family of analytic solutions is obtained by the potential reconstruction method. We then study its holographic dual QCD model. The kinetic gauge function can be fixed by requesting the linear Regge spectrum of mesons. We calculate the free energy to obtain the phase diagram of the holographic QCD model and interpret our result as the heavy quarks system by comparing the recent lattice QCD simulation. We finally obtain the equations of state in our model.
We construct an improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model with a cubic coupling term of the dilaton and the bulk scalar field. The background fields in this model are solved from the Einstein-dilaton system with a nontrivial dilaton potential, which has been shown to be able to reproduce the equation of state from lattice QCD with two flavors. The chiral transition behaviors are investigated in the improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model with the solved gravitational background, and the crossover transition can be realized. Our study provides a possibility to address the deconfining and chiral phase transitio…

We study the structure of the soft SUSY-breaking terms obtained from large classes of 4-D Strings under the assumption of dilaton/moduli dominance in the process of SUSY-breaking. In particular, we first analyze in detail the dilaton-dominated limit because of its finiteness properties and phenomenological predictivity, and second, we consider the new features appearing when several moduli fields contribute to SUSY breaking. Although some qualitative features indeed change in the multimoduli case with respect to the dilaton dominance one, the most natural mass relations at low-energy $m_l < m_…
We present an analysis of the low-energy implications of an intermediate scale ~10^{11} GeV string theory. We mainly focus on the evolution of the physical parameters under the renormalisation group equations (RGEs) and find several interesting new features that differ from the standard GUT scale or Planck scale scenarios. We give a general discussion of soft supersymmetry breaking terms in type I theories and then investigate the renormalization group running. In the dilaton domination scenario, we present the sparticle spectra, analyzing constraints from charge and colour breaking, fine tuni…
We calculate the running of the quark mass and the quark condensate using a dynamical soft-wall model by Csaki and Reece. We show that a correct running can be obtained with an appropriate sign for the dilaton field. In the soft-wall model with quadratic dilaton profile, a wrong sign for the dilaton field can give rise to a massless vector meson, a signature of spontaneously broken symmetry in the vector sector, which is not observed in nature. With a right parameter range, we obtain no such massless vector meson. We also find that, contrary to the soft-wall model with quadratic dilaton profil…
The AdS/CFT correspondence may offer new and useful insights into the non- perturbative regime of strongly coupled gauge theories such as Quantum Chromodynamics. Soft-wall AdS/QCD models have reproduced the linear trajectories of meson spectra by including background dilaton and chiral condensate fields. Efforts to derive these background fields from a scalar potential have so far been unsuccessful in satisfying the UV boundary conditions set by the AdS/CFT dictionary while reproducing the IR behavior needed to obtain the correct chiral symmetry breaking and meson spectra. We present a three-f…
We investigate nonlinear extensions of the holographic soft wall model proposed by Karch, Katz, Son and Stephanov \cite{Karch:2006pv} with a positive quadratic dilaton. We consider a Higgs potential for the tachyonic field that brings a more natural realisation of chiral symmetry breaking in the infrared regime. Utilising the AdS/CFT dictionary and holographic renormalisation we find the chiral condensate as a function of the quark mass. The nonlinearity of the Higgs potential leads to a nonlinear relation between the chiral condensate and the quark mass. Solving the effective Schrödinger equa…
We study the structure of the soft SUSY-breaking terms obtained from some classes of 4-D strings under the assumption of dilaton/moduli dominance in the process of SUSY-breaking. We generalize previous analysis in several ways and in particular consider the new features appearing when several moduli fields contribute to SUSY breaking (instead of an overall modulus $T$). Some qualitative features indeed change in the multimoduli case.A general discussion for symmetric Abelian orbifolds as well as explicit examples are given. Certain general sum-rules involving soft terms of different particles …
I discuss several issues concerning the use of string models as unified theories of all interactions. After a short review of gauge coupling unification in the string context, I discuss possible motivations for the construction of $SU(5)$ and $SO(10)$ String-GUTs. I describe the construction of such String-GUTs using different orbifold techniques and emphasize those properties which could be general. Although $SO(10)$ and $SU(5)$ String-GUTs are relatively easy to build, the spectrum bellow the GUT scale is in general bigger than that of the MSSM and includes colour octets and $SU(2)$ triplets…
We describe the computation of SUSY-breaking terms on a D3-brane in a quite general type IIB supergravity background. We apply it to study the SUSY-breaking induced on the D3-brane world-volume by the presence of NSNS and RR 3-form fluxes. We provide explicit general formulae for the SUSY-breaking soft terms valid for the different types of fluxes, leading to different patterns of soft terms. Imaginary anti-selfdual fluxes with G_3 a pure (3,0)-form lead to soft terms corresponding to dilaton-dominated SUSY-breaking. More general SUSY-breaking patterns are discussed, arising from more general …
We show how to incorporate chiral symmetry breaking in the soft-wall version of the AdS/QCD model by using a modified dilaton profile and a quartic term in the bulk scalar potential. This allows one to separate the dependence on spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking. Moreover our 5D model automatically incorporates linear trajectories and non chiral-symmetry restoration for highly excited radial states. We compare our resulting mass spectra in the scalar, vector and axial-vector sectors with the respective QCD resonances and find reasonable agreement using the known values for the …
We explore the possibility of modeling electroweak physics in a warped extra dimension with a soft wall. The infrared boundary is replaced with a smoothly varying dilaton field that provides a dynamical spacetime cutoff. We analyze gravity, gauge fields, and fermions in the soft-wall background and obtain a discrete spectrum of Kaluza-Klein states which can exhibit linear Regge-like behavior. Bulk Yukawa interactions give rise to nonconstant fermion mass terms, leading to fermion localization in the soft-wall background and a possible explanation of the Standard Model flavor structure. Further…
We study the helicity-independent generalized parton distributions of nucleons in the zero skewness case, based on a particular light-front quark model derived in a soft-wall AdS/QCD approach.
The general constraints on the parameter space of soft-breaking terms, in order to avoid dangerous charge and color breaking minima, are applied to the four-dimensional string scenario where the dilaton is the source of supersymmetry breaking (dilaton-dominated limit). The results indicate that the whole parameter space is excluded on these grounds after imposing the present experimental data on the top mass. The inclusion of a non-vanishing cosmological constant does not improve essentially the prospects. Possible way-outs to this situation are briefly discussed.
We propose a finite-temperature holographic model with a soft-wall geometry that incorporates two scalar fields, dual to the gluon and chiral operators. A series solution is presented as the dynamical, black-hole solution to Einstein's equations. We use the solution to calculate the thermal properties of the corresponding 4D gauge theory. Gluon and chiral thermal condensates contribute leading-order terms that affect the speed of sound through and entropy of the 4D thermal medium. At a temperature $T_c\sim 900$ MeV, we find a phase transition, which is much higher than lattice QCD calculations…
We consider an analysis of potentials related to Schrödinger-type equations for scalar fields in a 5D AdS black hole background with dilaton in order to get melting temperatures for different hadrons in a thermal bath. The approach does not consider calculations of spectral functions and it is easy to get results for hadrons with an arbitrary number of constituents. We present results for scalar mesons, glueballs, hybrid mesons and tetraquarks, and we show that mesons are more resistant to being melted in a thermal bath than other scalar hadrons, and in general the melting temperature increase…
We investigate the dependence of the $ρ$ meson-nucleon coupling constant on the temperature of the medium using the soft-wall model of AdS/QCD. The finite temperature profile functions for the vector and fermion fields are applied to the model having a thermal dilaton field. The interaction Lagrangian in the bulk between these fields is written as in zero temperature case and includes minimal- and magnetic-type interactions. The temperature dependence of the $g_{ρNN}(T)$ coupling constant and its terms are plotted. We observe that the coupling constant and its separate terms become zero at the…

We study a holographic model dual to walking/conformal technicolor (W/C TC) deforming a hard-wall type of bottom-up setup by including effects from techni-gluon condensation. We calculate masses of (techni-) $ρ$ meson, $a_1$ meson, and flavor/chiral-singlet scalar meson identified with techni-dilaton (TD)/conformal Higgs boson, as well as the $S$ parameter. It is shown that gluon contributions and large anomalous dimension tend to decrease specifically mass of the TD. In the typical model with $S \simeq 0.1$, we find $m_{\rm TD} \simeq 600$ GeV, while $m_ρ,m_{a_1} \simeq 4 {\rm TeV}$.
The Anti-de Sitter Space/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence may offer new and useful insights into the non-perturbative regime of strongly coupled gauge theories such as Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Soft-wall AdS/QCD models have reproduced the linear Regge trajectories of meson spectra by including background dilaton and chiral condensate fields. We calculate the structure functions for unpolarized deep inelastic scattering of baryons using an AdS/QCD soft wall model that considers a dressed mass for the bulk fermionic fields. Considering the regime of large Bjorken parameter x, we compare the results for the proton structure function $F_2$ with experimental results.
We go beyond parameterizations of soft terms in superstring models and investigate the dynamical assumptions that lead to the relative strength of the dilaton {\it vs} the moduli contributions in the soft breaking. Specifically, we discuss in some simple heterotic orbifold models sufficient conditions to achieve dilaton dominance. Assuming self-dual points to be minima we find multiple solutions to the trilinear and bilinear soft parameters $A_0$ and $B_0$. We discuss the constraints on $μ$ and $\tanβ$ in superstring models in the context of radiative breaking of the electroweak symmetry. We s…
The holographic methods inspired by the gauge/gravity correspondence from string theory have been actively applied to the hadron spectroscopy in the last eleven years. Within the phenomenological bottom-up approach, the linear Regge-like trajectories for light mesons are naturally reproduced in the so-called "Soft-wall" holographic models. I will give a very short review of the underlying ideas and technical aspects related to the meson spectroscopy. A generalization of soft-wall description of Regge trajectories to arbitrary intercept is proposed. The problem of incorporation of the chiral sy…
We show that it is possible to create an RS soft-wall model, a model with a compact extra dimension, without using fundamental branes. All that is required are bulk scalar fields minimally coupled to gravity. Of crucial importance is the stability of the size of the extra dimension. Without branes, one cannot easily implement the Goldberger-Wise mechanism, and instead it must be shown that the scalar configuration is stable in its own right. We use the superpotential approach for generating solutions, the so called 'fake supergravity' scenario, and show that configurations generated in such a …
We calculate the $a_1$ meson-nucleon coupling constant in the framework of soft-wall and hard-wall AdS/QCD models. In the bulk of AdS space were written bulk interaction Lagrangians for a minimal gauge coupling, a magnetic gauge coupling and a triple coupling. To use AdS/CFT correspondence and these bulk interaction Lagrangians we calculate the $a_1$ axial-vector meson-nucleon coupling constant in the boundary of AdS space within both models. We observe that the numerical values for the $g_{a_1 NN}$ coupling constant in the framework of both models are more close to the experimental value than…
We discuss a holographic soft-wall model developed for the description of mesons and baryons with adjustable quantum numbers n, J, L, S. This approach is based on an action which describes hadrons with broken conformal invariance and which incorporates confinement through the presence of a background dilaton field.
In the framework of the soft-wall model of AdS/QCD we calculated the $ρ$ meson nucleon coupling constant. Bulk-to boundary propagators for the free vector and spinor fields are presented, whose boundary values correspond to $ρ$ meson and to the nucleon respectively. The interaction Lagrangian between these fields is written in the bulk of AdS space and includes magnetic type interactions as well. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence from the bulk interaction action we derived the $g_{ρNN}$ coupling constant in the boundary QCD. We found that the soft-wall model result for the $g_{ρNN}$ constant is…

The formalism for modeling multiple fermion generations in a warped extra dimension with a soft-wall is presented. A bulk Higgs condensate is responsible for generating mass for the zero-mode fermions but leads to additional complexity from large mixing between different flavors. We extend existing single-generation analyses by considering new special cases in which analytical solutions can be derived and discuss flavor constraints. The general three-generation case is then treated using a simple numerical routine. Assuming anarchic 5D parameters we find a fermion mass spectrum resembling the …
We incorporate chiral symmetry breaking in a soft-wall version of the AdS/QCD model by using a modified dilaton profile and a quartic term in the bulk scalar potential. This allows one to separate the dependence on spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking. The resulting mass spectra in the scalar, vector and axial-vector sectors compares favorably with the respective QCD resonances.
By requiring the correct Regge behavior in both meson and nucleon sectors, we determine the infrared asymptotic behavior of various background fields in the soft-wall AdS/QCD model, including the dilaton, the warp factor, and the scalar VEV. We then use a simple parametrization which smoothly connect these IR limits and their usual UV limits. The resulting spectrum is compared with experimental data, and the agreement between them is good.
The primary gaol of this paper is to analyze the mass spectrum of the vector rho mesons by using the soft-wall AdS/QCD device. The theory is characterized by a form of the dilaton field which satisfies the constraint for having the correct Regge behavior as well as the constraint for the non-existence of the spurious massless scalar mode in the spectrum. The spectrum we obtained is in good agreement with the experimental data.
We investigate the chiral phase transition in the soft-wall model of AdS/QCD at zero chemical potential for two-flavor and three-flavor cases, respectively. We show that there is no spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in the original soft-wall model. After detailed analysis, we find that in order to realize chiral symmetry breaking and restoration, both profiles for the scalar potential and the dilaton field are essential. The scalar potential determines the possible solution structure of the chiral condensate, except the mass term, it takes another quartic term for the two-flavor case, and f…
The phenomenological consequences of the dilaton-type soft supersymmetry breaking terms in the context of the next to minimal supersymmetric standard model are investigated. We always find a very low top quark mass. As a consequence such string vacua are excluded by recent experimental results. The viability of the solution of the $μ$ term through the introduction of a gauge singlet field is also briefly discussed.
We explicitly demonstrate how to correctly define the hadronic parton distributions (PDFs, TMDs, and GPDs) in the soft-wall AdS/QCD approach, based on the use of a quadratic dilaton field, providing confinement and spontaneous breaking of conformal and chiral symmetries. The power behavior of parton distributions at large values of the light-cone variable is consistent with quark counting rules and Drell-Yan-West duality. All parton distributions are defined in terms of profile functions, which depend on the light-cone coordinate and are fixed from PDFs and electromagnetic form factors.
We review our recent work on four topics in strong-interaction physics from the perspective of the gauge/gravity correspondence. In particular, we discuss (i) the construction of the ``metric soft wall'' dual for holographic QCD which reproduces the observed linear square-mass trajectories of radially and orbitally excited (light-quark) hadrons, (ii) an extension of the metric soft wall which encodes diquark correlations holographically and additionally leads to an excellent description of the empirical nucleon excitation spectrum, (iii) an AdS/QCD dual that emerges as a new solution of 5d Ein…
