We show how circumradius and asymptotic behavior of curves in CAT(0) and CAT(K) spaces(K>0) are controlled by growth rates of total curvature. We apply our results to pursuit and evasion games of capture type with simple pursuit motion, generalizing results that are known for convex Euclidean domains, and obtaining results that are new for convex Euclidean domains and hold on playing fields vastly more general than these.
In this paper, we consider pursuit-evasion and probabilistic consequences of some geometric notions for bounded and suitably regular domains in Euclidean space that are CAT(kappa) for some kappa > 0. These geometric notions are useful for analyzing the related problems of (a) existence/nonexistence of successful evasion strategies for the Man in Lion and Man problems, and (b) existence/nonexistence of shy couplings for reflected Brownian motions. They involve properties of rubber bands and the extent to which a loop in the domain in question can be deformed to a point without, in between, incr…
A bounded curvature path is a continuously differentiable piecewise $C^2$ path with bounded absolute curvature that connects two points in the tangent bundle of a surface. In this note we give necessary and sufficient conditions for two bounded curvature paths, defined in the Euclidean plane, to be in the same connected component while keeping the curvature bounded at every stage of the deformation. Following our previous results here we finish a program started by Lester Dubins in 1961.
In the paper, we give rigidity theorems when the glued space of two Alexandrov spapces with curvature bounded below is a suspension, cone or join. And we list some basic properties of joins in Appendix.
A bounded curvature path is a continuously differentiable piecewise $C^2$ path with a bounded absolute curvature that connects two points in the tangent bundle of a surface. In this work, we analyze the homotopy classes of bounded curvature paths for points in the tangent bundle of the Euclidean plane. We show the existence of connected components of bounded curvature paths that do not correspond to those under (regular) homotopies obtaining the first results in the theory outside optimality. An application to robotics is presented.
A bounded curvature path is a continuously differentiable piece-wise $C^2$ path with bounded absolute curvature connecting two points in the tangent bundle of a surface. These paths have been widely considered in computer science and engineering since the bound on curvature models the trajectory of the motion of robots under turning circle constraints. Analyzing global properties of spaces of bounded curvature paths is not a simple matter since the length variation between length minimizers of arbitrary close endpoints or directions is in many cases discontinuous. In this note, we develop a si…
We show that for a noncollapsing sequence of closed, connected, oriented Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature uniformly bounded from below and diameter uniformly bounded above, Gromov-Hausdorff convergence essentially agrees with intrinsic flat convergence.
We construct bi-Lipschitz embeddings into Euclidean space for manifolds and orbifolds of bounded diameter and curvature. The distortion and dimension of such embeddings is bounded by diameter, curvature and dimension alone. Our results also apply for bounded subsets of complete Riemannian manifolds, and complete flat and elliptic orbifolds. Our approach is based on analysing the structure of a bounded curvature manifold at various scales by specializing methods from collapsing theory to a certain class of model spaces.
We prove a compactness theorem for metrics with Bounded Integral Curvature on a fixed closed surface $Σ$. As a corollary, we obtain a compactification of the space of Riemannian metrics with conical singularities, where an accumulation of singularities is allowed.
We discuss in which sense general metric measure spaces possess a first order differential structure. Building on this, we then see that on spaces with Ricci curvature bounded from below a second order calculus can be developed, permitting to define Hessian, covariant/exterior derivatives and Ricci curvature.
A Gauss equation is proved for subspaces of Alexandrov spaces of curvature bounded above by K. That is, a subspace of extrinsic curvature less than or equal to A, defined by a cubic inequality on the difference of arc and chord, has intrinsic curvature less than or equal to K+A^2. Sharp bounds on injectivity radii of subspaces, new even in the Riemannian case, are derived.
We show that immersed minimal surfaces of $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ with bounded curvature and proper self intersections are proper. We also show that the restriction of the immersing map to a wide component is always proper. When the immersing map is injective the whole surface is a wide component. Prior to these results it was only known that injectively immersed minimal surfaces with bounded curvature were proper.
There are two primary goals to this paper. In the first part of the paper we study smooth metric measure spaces (M^n,g,e^{-f}dv_g) and give several ways of characterizing bounds -Kg\leq \Ric+\nabla^2f\leq Kg on the Ricci curvature of the manifold. In particular, we see how bounded Ricci curvature on M controls the analysis of path space P(M) in a manner analogous to how lower Ricci curvature controls the analysis on M. In the second part of the paper we develop the analytic tools needed to in order to use these new characterizations to give a definition of bounded Ricci curvature on general me…
We define a Bishop-type inequality on metric measure spaces with Riemannian curvature-dimension condition. The main result in this short article is that any RCD spaces with the Bishop-type inequalities possess only one regular set in not only the measure theoretical sense but also the set theoretical one. As a corollary, the Hausdorff dimension of such $RCD^*(K,N)$ spaces are exactly $N$. We also prove that every tangent cone at any point on such RCD spaces is a metric cone.
We prove existence and uniqueness of optimal maps on $RCD^*(K,N)$ spaces under the assumption that the starting measure is absolutely continuous. We also discuss how this result naturally leads to the notion of exponentiation.
Choose two points in the tangent bundle of the Euclidean plane $(x,X),(y,Y)\in T{ \mathbb R}^2$. In this work we characterise the immersed length minimising paths with a prescribed bound on the curvature starting at $x$, tangent to $X$; finishing at $y$, tangent to $Y$, in each connected component of the space of paths with a prescribed bound on the curvature from $(x,X)$ to $(y,Y)$.
In this paper we investigate two important properties of metric measure spaces satisfying the reduced curvature-dimension condition for negative values of the dimension parameter: the existence of a transport map between two suitable marginals and the so-called local-to-global property.
Brighton [Bri13] proved the Liouville theorem for bounded harmonic functions on weighted manifolds satisfying non-negative curvature dimension condition, i.e. $CD(0,\infty).$ In this paper, we provide a new proof of this result by using the reverse Poincaré inequality. Moreover, we adopt this approach to prove the Liouville theorem for bounded harmonic functions on graphs satisfying the $CD(0,\infty)$ condition.
After establishing some new global facts (like a measure theoretic structure theorem and approximation results) about complex-valued functions with bounded variation on arbitrary noncompact Riemannian manifolds, we extend results of Miranda/the second author/Paronetto/Preunkert and of Carbonaro/Mauceri on the heat semigroup characterization of the variation of L^1-functions to a class of Riemannian manifolds with possibly unbounded from below Ricci curvature.
Consider two elements in the tangent bundle of the Euclidean plane $(x,X),(y,Y)\in T{\mathbb R}^2$. In this work we address the problem of characterizing the paths of bounded curvature and minimal length starting at $x$, finishing at $y$ and having tangents at these points $X$ and $Y$ respectively. This problem was first investigated in the late 50's by Lester Dubins. In this note we present a constructive proof of Dubins' result giving special emphasis on the geometric nature of this problem.
In this paper, we show a local energy convexity of $W^{1,2}$ maps into $CAT(K)$ spaces. This energy convexity allows us to extend Colding and Minicozzi's width-sweepout construction to produce closed geodesics in any closed Alexandrov space of curvature bounded from above, which also provides a generalized version of the Birkhoff-Lyusternik theorem on the existence of non-trivial closed geodesics in the Alexandrov setting.
Let $(M,d)$ be a separable and complete geodesic space with curvature lower bounded, by $κ\in \mathbb R$, in the sense of Alexandrov. Let $μ$ be a Borel probability measure on $M$, such that $μ\in\mathcal P_2(M)$, and that has at least one barycenter $x^{*}\in M$. We show that for any geodesically $α$-convex function $f:M\to \mathbb R$, for $α\in \mathbb R$, the inequality \[f(x^*)\le \int_M (f -\fracα{2}d^2(x^*,.))\,{\rm d}μ,\] holds provided $f$ is locally Lipschitz at $x^*$ and either positive or in $L^1(μ)$. Our proof relies on the properties of tangent cones at barycenters and on the exis…
The goal of this article is to survey various results concerning stochastic completeness of graphs. In particular, we present a variety of formulations of stochastic completeness and discuss how a discrepancy between uniqueness class and volume growth criteria in the continuous and discrete settings was ultimately resolved via the use of intrinsic metrics. Along the way, we discuss some equivalent notions of boundedness in the sense of geometry and of analysis. We also discuss various curvature criteria for stochastic completeness and discuss how weakly spherically symmetric graphs establish t…
