We selected a sample of galaxies, extremely isolated in 3D redshift space, based on data from NED and the ongoing ALFALFA HI (21cm) survey. A simple selection criterion was employed: having no neighbors closer than 300 km/s in 3D redshift space. The environments of galaxies, selected using this criterion and NED data alone, were analyzed theoretically using a constrained simulation of the local Universe, and were found to be an order of magnitude less dense than environments around randomly selected galaxies. One third of the galaxies selected using NED data alone did not pass the criterion when tested with ALFALFA data, implying that the use of unbiased HI data significantly improves the quality of the sample.
In the framework of the AMIGA project we present a revision of the environment for galaxies in the Catalogue of Isolated Galaxies (CIG, Karachentseva 1973) using the ninth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-DR9). The aims of this study are to refine the photometric-based AMIGA sample of isolated galaxies and to provide an improvement of the quantification of the isolation degree with respect to previous works, using both photometry and spectroscopy. We developed an automatic method to search for neighbours within a projected area of 1 Mpc radius centred on each primary galaxy t…
Identifications of quasars at intermediate redshifts (2.2<z<3.5) are inefficient in most previous quasar surveys as their optical colors are similar to those of stars. The near-IR K-band excess technique has been suggested to overcome this difficulty. Our study also proposed to use optical/near-IR colors for selecting z<4 quasars. To this method, we selected 105 unidentified bright targets with i<18.5 from the quasar candidates of SDSS DR6 with both SDSS ugriz optical and UKIDSS YJHK near-IR photometric data, which satisfy our proposed Y-K/g-z criterion and have photometric redshifts between 2…
The role of the environment on galaxy evolution is still not fully understood. In order to quantify and set limits on the role of nurture one must identify and study a sample of isolated galaxies. The AMIGA project "Analysis of the Interstellar Medium of Isolated GAlaxies" is doing a multi-wavelength study of a large sample of isolated galaxies in order to examine their interstellar medium and star formation activity. We processed data for 950 galaxies from the Catalogue of Isolated Galaxies (CIG, Karachentseva 1973) and evaluated their isolation using an automated star-galaxy classification p…
We present a sample of 8498 quasars with both SDSS $ugriz$ optical and UKIDSS $YJHK$ near-IR photometric data. With this sample, we obtain the median colour-z relations based on 7400 quasars with magnitude uncertainties less than 0.1mag in all bands. By analyzing the quasar colours, we propose an empirical criterion in the $Y-K$ vs. $g-z$ colour-colour diagram to separate stars and quasars with redshift $z<4$, and two other criteria for selecting high-z quasars. Using the SDSS-UKIDSS colour-z relations, we estimate the photometric redshifts of 8498 SDSS-UKIDSS quasars, and find that 85.0% of t…
The inclination of galaxies induces both reddening and extinction to their observed spectral energy distribution, which in turn impact the derived properties of the galaxies. Here we report a significant dependence of the error in photometric redshift (photo-z) on the inclination of disk galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The bias in the photo-z based on the template-fitting approach increases from -0.015 in face-on to 0.021 in edge-on galaxies. A Principal Component Analysis on the full sample of photometry reveals the inclination of the galaxies to be represented by the 2nd mode. Th…
The observed properties of high redshift galaxies depend on the underlying foreground distribution of large scale structure, which distorts their intrinsic properties via gravitational lensing. We focus on the regime where the dominant contribution originates from a single lens and examine the statistics of gravitational lensing by a population of virialized and non-virialized structures using sub-mm galaxies at z ~ 2.6 and Lyman-break galaxies at redshifts z ~ 6 - 15 as the background sources. We quantify the effect of lensing on the luminosity function of the high redshift sources, focusing …
We present a catalog of 37,842 quasars in the SDSS Data Release 7, which have counterparts within 6" in the WISE Preliminary Data Release. The overall WISE detection rate of the SDSS quasars is 86.7%, and it decreases to less than 50.0% when the quasar magnitude is fainter than $i=20.5$. We derive the median color-redshift relations based on this SDSS-WISE quasar sample and apply them to estimate the photometric redshifts of the SDSS-WISE quasars. We find that by adding the WISE W1- and W2-band data to the SDSS photometry we can increase the photometric redshift reliability, defined as the per…
We present a new catalogue of galaxy triplets derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. The identification of systems was performed considering galaxies brighter than M_r=-20.5 and imposing constraints over the projected distances, radial velocity differences of neighbouring galaxies and isolation. To improve the identification of triplets we employed a data pixelization scheme, which allows to handle large amounts of data as in the SDSS photometric survey. Using spectroscopic and photometric data in the redshift range 0.01<z<0.40 we obtain 5901 triplet candidates. We have used…
We present an analysis of the size growth seen in early-type galaxies over 10 Gyr of cosmic time. Our analysis is based on a homogeneous synthesis of published data from 17 spectroscopic surveys observed at similar spatial resolution, augmented by new measurements for galaxies in the Gemini Deep Deep Survey. In total, our sample contains structural data for 465 galaxies (mainly early-type) in the redshift range 0.2<z<2.7. The size evolution of passively-evolving galaxies over this redshift range is gradual and continuous, with no evidence for an end or change to the process around z~1, as has …
Recently, two classes of quasar samples were identified, which are promising as new cosmological probes extending to higher redshifts. The first sample uses the nonlinear relation between the ultraviolet and X-ray luminosities of quasars to derive luminosity distances, whereas the linear sizes of compact radio quasars in the second sample can serve as standardized rulers, providing angular-diameter distances. In this study, under the assumption of a flat universe, we refreshed the calibration of multiple measurements of high-redshift quasars (in the framework of a cosmological-model-independen…
Galaxy clusters provide powerful laboratories for the study of galaxy evolution, particularly the origin of correlations of morphology and star formation rate (SFR) with density. We construct visible to MIR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of cluster galaxies and use them to measure stellar masses and SFRs in eight low redshift clusters, which we examine as a function of environment. A partial correlation analysis indicates that SFR depends strongly on R/R200 (>99.9% confidence) and is independent of projected local density at fixed radius. SFR also shows no residual dependence on stellar …
The main focus of this thesis is the IR spectral regime, which since the 70's and 80's has revolutionised our understanding of the Universe. A multi-wavelength analysis on Extremely Red Galaxy populations is first presented in one of the most intensively observed patch of the sky, the Chandra Deep Field South. By adopting a purely statistical methodology, we consider all the photometric and spectroscopic information available on large samples of Extremely Red Objects (EROs, 553 sources), IRAC EROs (IEROs, 259 sources), and Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs, 289 sources). We derive general properties:…
Taking advantage of the impressive sensitivity of Spitzer to detect massive galaxies at high redshift, we study the mid-infrared environments of powerful, high-redshift radio galaxies at 1.2<z<3. Galaxy cluster member candidates were isolated using a single Spitzer/IRAC mid-infrared color criterion, [3.6]-[4.5]>-0.1 (AB), in the fields of 48 radio galaxies at 1.2<z<3. This simple IRAC color selection is effective at identifying galaxies at z>1.2. Using a counts-in-cell analysis, we identify a field as overdense when 15 or more red IRAC sources are found within 1arcmin (i.e.,~0.5Mpc at 1.2<z<3)…
We present a set of low resolution empirical SED templates for AGNs and galaxies in the wavelength range from 0.03 to 30 microns based on the multi-wavelength photometric observations of the NOAO Deep-Wide Field Survey Bootes field and the spectroscopic observations of the AGN and Galaxy Evolution Survey. Our training sample is comprised of 14448 galaxies in the redshift range 0<~z<~1 and 5347 likely AGNs in the range 0<~z<~5.58. We use our templates to determine photometric redshifts for galaxies and AGNs. While they are relatively accurate for galaxies, their accuracies for AGNs are a strong…
We present optical spectroscopic follow-up of a sample of Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs) with K < 22.5 (Vega), selected by J-K > 2.3, in the Hubble Deep Field South, the MS 1054-03 field, and the Chandra Deep Field South. Spectroscopic redshifts were obtained for 15 DRGs. Only 2 out of 15 DRGs are located at z < 2, suggesting a high efficiency to select high-redshift sources. From other spectroscopic surveys in the CDFS targeting intermediate to high redshift populations selected with different criteria, we find spectroscopic redshifts for a further 30 DRGs. We use the sample of spectroscopically…
Four-dimensional cosmological models are studied on a boundary of a five-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS_5) black hole with AdS Reissner-Nordstrom and scalar charged Reissner- Nordstrom black hole solutions, where we call the former a "Hairless" black hole and the latter a "Hairy" black hole. To obtain the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) spacetime metric on the boundary of the AdS_5 black hole, we employ Eddington-Finkelstein (EF) coordinates to the bulk geometry. We then derive modified Friedmann equations on a boundary of the AdS_5 black hole via AdS/CFT correspondence and discuss its cosmo…
Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) are usually thought to be powered by star formation. It has been recently reported that a fraction of LAEs at redshift z~3-4 hosts an Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). If an AGN is present it could be obscured and undetectable in X-rays, but yet dominate the Lya luminosity. We examine the properties of these AGN-powered LAEs at high redshift (z>=6) using radiative transfer cosmological simulations and obtain a reliable criterion to identify them from their observed \Lya line and surface brightness. We find that these sources should have: (a) negative line weighted skewn…
We reconstruct in this paper the deceleration and jerk parameters as functions of the cosmological redshift from data on cosmic chronometers (CCH), baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs), and the Pantheon+MCT compilation of supernovae of Type Ia (SnIa). The reconstruction is carried out with the Weighted Function Regression method, previously introduced by Gómez-Valent & Amendola (2018). It improves the usual cosmographic approach by automatically implementing Occam's razor criterion. This makes our procedure to be more free of model and parametrization dependencies than many other analyses in th…
We study the abundance of satellites akin to the brightest, classical dwarf spheroidals around galaxies similar in magnitude and isolation to the Milky Way and M31 in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. From a combination of photometric and spectroscopic redshifts, we bound the mean and the intrinsic scatter in the number of satellites down to ten magnitudes fainter than the Milky Way. Restricting to magnitudes brighter than Sagittarius, we show that the Milky Way is not a significant statistical outlier in its population of classical dwarf spheroidals. At fainter magnitudes, we find an upper limit …
A simple mid-infrared-to-optical color criterion of R-[24]>14 Vega mag results in a robust selection of approximately half of the redshift 2 ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) population. These `Dust-Obscured Galaxies', or DOGs, have many properties that suggest that they are good candidates for systems in a transition phase between gas-rich mergers and QSOs.
A substantial fraction of the stellar mass growth across cosmic time occurred within dust-enshrouded environments. Yet, the exact amount of star-forming activity that took place in high-redshift dusty galaxies currently missed by optical surveys has been barely explored. Using the Spitzer observations of COSMOS we determined the fraction of luminous star-forming galaxies at 1.5<z<3 escaping the traditional color selection techniques because of dust extinction, as well as their contribution to the cosmic star formation density at high redshift. We find that the BzK criterion offers an almost co…
We apply a friends-of-friends algorithm to an enhanced SDSS DR12 spectroscopic catalog including redshift from literature to construct a catalog of $1588~N\ge3$ compact groups of galaxies containing 5179 member galaxies and covering the redshift range $0.01 < z < 0.19$. This catalog contains 18 times as many systems and reaches 3 times the depth of similar catalog of Barton et al. (1996). We construct catalogs from both magnitude-limited and volume-limited galaxy samples. Like Barton et al. (1996) we omit the frequently applied isolation criterion in the compact group selection algorithm. Thus…
Following our previous spectroscopic observations of $z>7$ galaxies with Gemini/GNIRS and VLT/XSHOOTER, which targeted a total of 8 objects, we present here our results from a deeper and larger VLT/FORS2 spectroscopic sample of Wide Field Camera 3 selected $z>7$ candidate galaxies. With our FORS2 setup we cover the 737-1070nm wavelength range, enabling a search for Lyman-$α$ in the redshift range spanning 5.06 - 7.80. We target 22 $z$-band dropouts and find no evidence of Lyman-$α$ emission, with the exception of a tentative detection ($<5σ$, which is our adopted criterion for a secure detecti…
Using a simple color selection based on B-, z- and K-band photometry, BzK= (z-K)_AB-(B-z)_AB>-0.2, we picked out 52 star-forming galaxies at 1.4<z<2.5 (sBzKs) from a K-band selected sample (K_Vega<22.0) in an area of ~5.5 arcmin^2 of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF). We develop a new photometric redshift method, and the error in our photometric redshifts is less than 0.02(1+z). From the photometric redshift distribution, we find the BzK color criterion can be used to select star-forming galaxies at 1.4<z<2.5 with K_Vega<22.0. Down to K_Vega<22.0, the number counts of sBzKs increase linearly w…
So far large and different data sets revealed the accelerated expansion rate of the Universe, which is usually explained in terms of dark energy. The nature of dark energy is not yet known, and several models have been introduced: a non zero cosmological constant, a potential energy of some scalar field, effects related to the non homogeneous distribution of matter, or effects due to alternative theories of gravity. Recently, a tension with the flat ΛCDM model has been discovered using a high-redshift Hubble diagram of supernovae, quasars, and gamma-ray bursts. Here we use the Union2 type Ia s…
The oxygen and nitrogen abundance evolutions with redshift and galaxy stellar mass in emission-line SDSS galaxies are investigated. This is the first such study for nitrogen abundances, and it provides an additional constraint for the study of the chemical evolution of galaxies. We have devised a criterion to recognize and exclude from consideration AGNs and star-forming galaxies with large errors in the line flux measurements. To select star-forming galaxies with accurate line fluxes measurements, we require that, for each galaxy, the nitrogen abundances derived with various calibrations base…
We analyze the first cosmological simulations that recover the fragmentation of high-redshift galactic discs driven by cold streams. The fragmentation is recovered owing to an AMR resolution better than 70 pc with cooling below 10^4 K. We study three typical star-forming galaxies in haloes of approx. 5 10^11 Msun at z=2.3, when they were not undergoing a major merger. The steady gas supply by cold streams leads to gravitationally unstable, turbulent discs, which fragment into giant clumps and transient features on a dynamical timescale. The disc clumps are not associated with dark-matter haloe…
In this study, we have carried out a detailed, statistical analysis of isolated model galaxies, taking advantage of publicly available hierarchical galaxy formation models. To select isolated galaxies, we employ 2D methods widely used in the observational literature, as well as a more stringent 3D isolation criterion that uses the full 3D-real space information. In qualitative agreement with observational results, isolated model galaxies have larger fractions of late-type, star forming galaxies with respect to randomly selected samples of galaxies with the same mass distribution. We also find …
We study the impact of different bias and redshift-space models on the halo power spectrum, quantifying their effect by comparing the fit to a subset of realizations taken from the WizCOLA suite. These provide simulated power spectrum measurements between $k_{\rm min}$ = 0.03 h/Mpc and $k_{\rm max}$ = 0.29 h/Mpc, constructed using the comoving Lagrangian acceleration method. For the bias prescription we include (i) simple linear bias; (ii) the McDonald & Roy model and (iii) its coevolution variant introduced by Saito et al.; and (iv) a very general model including all terms up to one-loop and …
This is the first in a series of papers studying the astrophysics and cosmology of massive, dynamically relaxed galaxy clusters. Here we present a new, automated method for identifying relaxed clusters based on their morphologies in X-ray imaging data. While broadly similar to others in the literature, the morphological quantities that we measure are specifically designed to provide a fair basis for comparison across a range of data quality and cluster redshifts, to be robust against missing data due to point-source masks and gaps between detectors, and to avoid strong assumptions about the co…
The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) will precisely constrain cosmic expansion and the growth of structure by collecting $\sim$40 million extra-galactic redshifts across $\sim$80\% of cosmic history and one third of the sky. The Emission Line Galaxy (ELG) sample, which will comprise about one-third of all DESI tracers, will be used to probe the Universe over the $0.6 < z < 1.6$ range, which includes the $1.1<z<1.6$ range, expected to provide the tightest constraints. We present the target selection of the DESI SV1 Survey Validation and Main Survey ELG samples, which relies on the Le…
We take advantage of the exceptional photometric coverage provided by the combination of GALEX data in the UV and the ALHAMBRA survey in the optical and near-IR to analyze the physical properties of a sample of 1225 GALEX-selected Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at $0.8 \lesssim z \lesssim 1.2$ located in the COSMOS field. This is the largest sample of LBGs studied at that redshift range so far. According to a spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting with synthetic stellar population templates, we find that LBGs at $z \sim 1$ are mostly young galaxies with a median age of 341 Myr and have interm…
In order to derive the AGN contribution to the cosmological ionizing emissivity we have selected faint AGN candidates at $z>4$ in the CANDELS GOODS-South field which is one of the deepest fields with extensive multiwavelength coverage from Chandra, HST, Spitzer and various groundbased telescopes. We have adopted a relatively novel criterion. As a first step high redshift galaxies are selected in the NIR $H$ band down to very faint levels ($H\leq27$) using reliable photometric redshifts. This corresponds at $z>4$ to a selection criterion based on the galaxy rest-frame UV flux. AGN candidates ar…
We use updated Hubble parameter and baryon acoustic oscillation data, as well as other lower-redshift Type Ia supernova, Mg II reverberation-measured quasar, quasar angular size, H II starburst galaxy, and Amati-correlated gamma-ray burst data, to jointly constrain cosmological parameters in six cosmological models. The joint analysis provides model-independent determinations of the Hubble constant, $H_0=69.7\pm1.2$ $\rm{km \ s^{-1} \ Mpc^{-1}}$, and the current non-relativistic matter density parameter, $Ω_{m0}=0.295\pm0.017$. These error bars are factors of 2.2 and 2.3 larger than the corres…

Context. Studies of galaxy pairs can provide valuable information to jointly understand the formation and evolution of galaxies and galaxy groups. Consequently, taking into account the new high precision photo-z surveys, it is important to have reliable and tested methods that allow us to properly identify these systems and estimate their total masses and other properties. Aims. In view of the forthcoming Physics of the Accelerating Universe Survey (PAUS) we propose and evaluate the performance of an identification algorithm of projected close isolated galaxy pairs. We expect that the photomet…
Using mass-selected galaxy samples from deep multiwavelength data we investigate the incidence of close galaxy pairs between z=0.4-2. Many such close pairs will eventually merge, and the pair fraction is therefore related to the merger rate. Over this redshift range the mean pair fraction is essentially constant (evolving as f_pair (1+z)^{-0.4 +/- 0.6}) with about 6+/-1% of massive galaxies having a 1:4 or greater companion within 30h^-1 kpc. Assuming the timescale over which pairs merge is not a strong function of redshift, this implies a similarly constant merger rate (per unit time) out to …
One of the most challenging aspects of studying galaxies in the z>~7 universe is the infrequent confirmation of their redshifts through spectroscopy, a phenomenon thought to occur from the increasing opacity of the intergalactic medium to Lya photons at z>6.5. The resulting redshift uncertainties inhibit the efficient search for [C II] in z~7 galaxies with sub-mm instruments such as ALMA, given their limited scan speed for faint lines. One means by which to improve the precision of the inferred redshifts is to exploit the potential impact of strong nebular emission lines on the colors of z~4-8…
In this paper, we obtain two improved Amati correlations of the Gamma-Ray burst (GRB) data via a powerful statistical tool called copula. After calibrating, with the low-redshift GRB data, the improved Amati correlations based on a fiducial $Λ$CDM model with $Ω_\mathrm{m0}=0.3$ and $H_0=70~\mathrm{km~s^{-1}Mpc^{-1}}$, and extrapolating the results to the high-redshift GRB data, we obtain the Hubble diagram of GRB data points. Applying these GRB data to constrain the $Λ$CDM model, we find that the improved Amati correlation from copula can give a result well consistent with $Ω_\mathrm{m0}=0.3$,…
At fixed stellar mass $M_*$, the effective radius $R_{\rm e}$ of massive satellite early-type galaxies (ETGs) in galaxy clusters is, on average, larger at lower redshift. We study theoretically this size evolution using the state-of-the-art cosmological simulation IllustrisTNG100: we sampled $75$ simulated satellite ETGs at redshift $z=0$ with $M_* \ge 10^{10.4} M_{\odot}$ belonging to the two most massive ($\approx 10^{14.6} M_{\odot} $) haloes of the simulation. We traced back in time the two clusters' main progenitors and we selected their satellite ETGs at $z>0$ with the same criterion ado…
In this work we study different types of dark energy (DE) models in the framework of the cosmographic approach, with emphasis on the Running Vacuum models (RVMs). We assess their viability using different information criteria and compare them with the so-called Ghost DE models (GDEs) as well as with the concordance $Λ$CDM model. We use the Hubble diagrams for Pantheon SnIa, quasars (QSOs), gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) as well as the data on baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAOs) in four different combinations. Upon minimizing the $χ^2$ function of the distance modulus in the context of the Markov Ch…
Two new fast single radio bursts FRB 180924 and FRB 190523 well localized to massive galaxies have opened a new window to probe and characterize how cosmic baryons are allocated between galaxies, their surroundings and intergalactic medium. We are motivated by testing Einstein's weak equivalence principle with these two cosmic transients which have accurate redshifts. Using photons with different energies emitted by FRB 180924, we obtain, so far, the most stringent bound $Δγ<2.16\times10^{-10}$ for non-repeating FRBs with accurate redshifts when only considering the gravitational potential of …
