4 pages, talk given at "Galaxies in Isolation: Exploring Nature vs. Nurture" meeting held in Granada, Spain 12-15 May 2009, ASP. Final version. HCG completness is now 5% at v<9000 km/s
The nature of compact groups (CGs) of galaxies, apparently so dense that the galaxies often overlap, is still a subject of debate: Are CGs roughly as dense in 3D as they appear in projection? Or are they caused by chance alignments of galaxies along the line-of-sight, within larger virialized groups or even longer filamentary structures? The nature of CGs is re-appraised using the z=0 outputs of three galaxy formation models, applied to the dissipationless Millennium Simulation. The same selection criteria are applied to mock galaxy catalogs from these models as have been applied by Hickson and co-workers in redshift space. We find 20 times as many mock CGs as the `HCGs' found by Hickson within a distance corresponding to 9000 km/s. This very low (5%) HCG completeness is caused by Hickson missing groups that were either faint, near the surface brightness threshold, of small angular size, or with a dominant brightest galaxy. We find that most velocity-filtered CGs are physically dense, regardless of the precise threshold used in 3D group size and line-of-sight elongation, and of the galaxy formation model used. This result also holds for mock CGs with the same selection biases as was found for the HCGs.
The aim of this project is to determine the consistency of an assumed cosmological model by means of a detailed analysis of the brightness profiles of distant galaxies.Starting from the theory developed by Ellis and Perry (1979) connecting the angular diameter distance obtained from a relativistic cosmological model and the detailed photometry of galaxies, we assume the presently most accepted cosmological model with non-zero cosmological constant and attempt to predict the brightness profiles of galaxies of a given redshift. Then this theoretical profile can be compared to observational data …
We examine the past and current work on the star formation (SF) histories of dwarf galaxies in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. The results obtained from different numerical methods are still somewhat mixed, but the differences are understandable if we consider the numerical and resolution effects. It remains a challenge to simulate the episodic nature of SF history in dwarf galaxies at late times within the cosmological context of a cold dark matter model. More work is needed to solve the mysteries of SF history of dwarf galaxies employing large-scale hydrodynamic simulations on the nex…
I highlight three results from cosmological hydrodynamic simulations that yield a realistic red sequence of galaxies: 1) Major galaxy mergers are not responsible for shutting off star-formation and forming the red sequence. Starvation in hot halos is. 2) Massive galaxies grow substantially (about a factor of 2 in mass) after being quenched, primarily via minor (1:5) mergers. 3) Hot halo quenching naturally explains why galaxies are red when they either (a) are massive or (b) live in dense environments.
Images of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field are analyzed to obtain a catalog of galaxies for which the angular sizes, surface brightness, photometric redshifts, and absolute magnitudes are found. The catalog contains a total of about 4000 galaxies identified at a high signal-to-noise ratio, which allows the cosmological relations angular size{redshift and surface brightness-redshift to be analyzed. The parameters of the evolution of linear sizes and surface brightness of distant galaxies in the redshift interval 0.5-6.5 are estimated in terms of a grid of cosmological models with different density p…
We compute the infrared (IR) emission from high-redshift galaxies in cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations by coupling the output of the simulation with the population synthesis code `GRASIL' by Silva et al. Based on the stellar mass, metallicity and formation time of each star particle, we estimate the full spectral energy distribution of each star particle from ultraviolet to IR, and compute the luminosity function of simulated galaxies in the Spitzer broadband filters for direct comparison with the available Spitzer observations.
We show that the galaxy 4-Point Correlation Function (4PCF) can test for cosmological parity violation. The detection of cosmological parity violation would reflect previously unknown forces present at the earliest moments of the Universe. Recent developments both in rapidly evaluating galaxy $N$-Point Correlation Functions (NPCFs) and in determining the corresponding covariance matrices make the search for parity violation in the 4PCF possible in current and upcoming surveys such as those undertaken by Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), the $Euclid$ satellite, and the Vera C. Rubin …
I review the subject of the cosmological evolution of galaxies, including different aspects of growth in disk galaxies, by focussing on the angular momentum problem, mergers, and their by-products. I discuss the alternative to merger-driven growth -- cold accretion and related issues. In the follow-up, I review possible feedback mechanisms and their role in galaxy evolution. Special attention is paid to high-redshift galaxies and their properties. In the next step, I discuss a number of processes, gas- and stellar-dynamical, within the central kiloparsec of disk galaxies, and their effect on t…
An expression for rotational velocity of a test particle around the central mass in the invariant plane is derived. For this, a line element of Schwarzschild de-Sitter space-time is used to study the effect of cosmological constant ($Λ$) on the motion of both massive and massless particles. Using rotation curve data of 15 nearby spiral and barred spiral galaxies, we estimated the mass and $Λ$ of the galaxy. The mass of the galaxies are found to lie in the range 0.13-7.60 $\times$ 10$^{40}$ kg. The cosmological constant ($Λ$) is found to be negative ($-$0.03 to $-$0.10 $\times$ 10$^{-40}$ km$^{…
Clustering properties and peculiar velocities of halos in large-scale structure carry a wealth of cosmological information over a wide range of scales from linear to nonlinear scales. We use halo catalogs in a suite of high-resolution $N$-body simulations to construct mock catalogs of galaxies that resemble the SDSS-like luminous early-type galaxies at three redshift bins in the range $0.15\le z\le 0.7$. To do this we include 10 nuisance parameters to model variations in halo-galaxy connections for each redshift bin; the halo occupation distribution, and the spatial and velocity distributions …
We apply the methodology developed in \cite{Li2014,Li2015} to BOSS DR12 galaxies and derive cosmological constraints from the redshift dependence of the Alcock-Paczynski (AP) effect. The apparent anisotropy in the distribution of observed galaxies arise from two main sources, the redshift-space distortion (RSD) effect due to the galaxy peculiar velocities, and the geometric distortion when incorrect cosmological models are assumed for transforming redshift to comoving distance, known as the AP effect. Anisotropies produced by the RSD effect are, although large, maintaining a nearly uniform mag…
We study the relationship between the metallicity of gamma-ray burst (GRB) progenitors and the probability distribution function (PDF) of GRB host galaxies as a function of luminosity using cosmological hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy formation. We impose a maximum limit to the gas metallicity in which GRBs can occur, and examine how the predicted luminosity PDF of GRB host galaxies changes in the simulation. We perform the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, and show that the result from our simulation agrees with the observed luminosity PDF of core-collapse supernovae (SNe) host galaxies when we ass…
The age and metallicity gradients for a sample of group and cluster galaxies from N-body+hydrodynamical simulation are analyzed in terms of galaxy stellar mass. Dwarf galaxies show null age gradient with a tail of high and positive values for systems in groups and cluster outskirts. Massive systems have generally zero age gradients which turn to positive for the most massive ones. Metallicity gradients are distributed around zero in dwarf galaxies and become more negative with mass; massive galaxies have steeper negative metallicity gradients, but the trend flatten with mass. In particular, fo…
We present a method for populating dark matter simulations with haloes of mass below the resolution limit. It is based on stochastically sampling a field derived from the density field of the halo catalogue, using constraints from the conditional halo mass function n(m|δ). We test the accuracy of the method and show its application in the context of building mock galaxy samples. We find that this technique allows precise reproduction of the two-point statistics of galaxies in mock samples constructed with this method. Our results demonstrate that the full information content of a simulation ca…
We examine the global HI properties of galaxies in quarter-billion particle cosmological simulations using Gadget-2, focusing on how galactic outflows impact HI content. We consider four outflow models, including a new one (ezw) motivated by recent interstellar medium simulations in which the wind speed and mass loading factor scale as expected for momentum-driven outflows for larger galaxies and energy-driven outflows for dwarfs (sigma<75 km/s). To obtain predicted HI masses, we employ a simple but effective local correction for particle self-shielding, and an observationally-constrained tran…
Many approaches to obtaining cosmological constraints rely on the connection between galaxies and dark matter. However, the distribution of galaxies is dependent on their formation and evolution as well as the cosmological model, and galaxy formation is still not a well-constrained process. Thus, methods that probe cosmology using galaxies as a tracer for dark matter must be able to accurately estimate the cosmological parameters without knowing the details of galaxy formation a priori. We apply this reasoning to the method of obtaining $Ω_m$ and $σ_8$ from galaxy clustering combined with the …
The study of the magnification bias produced on high-redshift sub-millimetre galaxies by foreground galaxies through the analysis of the cross-correlation function was recently demonstrated as an interesting independent alternative to the weak-lensing shear as a cosmological probe. In the case of the proposed observable, most of the cosmological constraints mainly depend on the largest angular separation measurements. Therefore, we aim to study and correct the main large-scale biases that affect foreground and background galaxy samples to produce a robust estimation of the cross-correlation fu…
We place constraints on the matter density of the Universe and the amplitude of clustering using measurements of the galaxy two-point correlation function from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We generate model predictions for different cosmologies by populating rescaled N-body simulations with galaxies using the subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) technique. We find Omega-M = 0.29 +/- 0.03 and sigma-8 = 0.86 +/- 0.04 at 68% confidence from fitting the observed two-point galaxy correlation function of galaxies brighter than M_r = -18 in a volume limited sample of galaxies obtained by the SDS…
In order to investigate the structure and dynamics of the recently discovered massive (M_* > 10^11 M_sun) compact z~2 galaxies, cosmological hydrodynamical/N-body simulations of a proto-cluster region have been undertaken. At z=2, the highest resolution simulation contains ~5800 resolved galaxies, of which 509, 27 and 5 have M_* > 10^10 M_sun, > 10^11 M_sun and > 4x10^11 M_sun, respectively. Effective radii and characteristic stellar densities have been determined for all galaxies. At z=2, for the definitely well resolved mass range of M_* > 10^11 Msun, the mass-size relation is consistent wit…
We use large cosmological Smoothed-Particle-Hydrodynamics simulations to study the formation and evolution of sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs). In our previous work, we studied the statistical properties of ultra-violet selected star-forming galaxies at high redshifts. We populate the same cosmological simulations with SMGs by calculating the reprocess of stellar light by dust grains into far-infrared to millimetre wavebands in a self-consistent manner. We generate light-cone outputs to compare directly the statistical properties of the simulated SMGs with available observations. Our model repro…
Massive galaxies today typically are not forming stars despite being surrounded by hot gaseous halos with short central cooling times. This likely owes to some form of "quenching feedback" such as merger-driven quasar activity or radio jets emerging from central black holes. Here we implement heuristic prescriptions for these phenomena on-the-fly within cosmological hydrodynamic simulations. We constrain them by comparing to observed luminosity functions and color-magnitude diagrams from SDSS. We find that quenching from mergers alone does not produce a realistic red sequence, because 1 - 2 Gy…
The intrinsic alignments of galaxies are recognised as a contaminant to weak gravitational lensing measurements. In this work, we study the alignment of galaxy shapes and spins at low redshift ($z\sim 0.5$) in Horizon-AGN, an adaptive-mesh-refinement hydrodynamical cosmological simulation box of 100 Mpc/h a side with AGN feedback implementation. We find that spheroidal galaxies in the simulation show a tendency to be aligned radially towards over-densities in the dark matter density field and other spheroidals. This trend is in agreement with observations, but the amplitude of the signal depen…
The intrinsic alignments of galaxies are usually regarded as a contaminant to weak gravitational lensing observables. The alignment of Luminous Red Galaxies, detected unambiguously in observations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, can be reproduced by the linear tidal alignment model of Catelan, Kamionkowski & Blandford (2001) on large scales. In this work, we explore the cosmological information encoded in the intrinsic alignments of red galaxies. We make forecasts for the ability of current and future spectroscopic surveys to constrain local primordial non-Gaussianity and Baryon Acoustic Os…
We studied the evolution of the gas kinematics of galaxies by performing hydrodynamical simulations in a cosmological scenario. We paid special attention to the origin of the scatter of the Tully-Fisher relation and the features which could be associated with mergers and interactions. We extended the study by De Rossi et al. (2010) and analysed their whole simulated sample which includes both, gas disc-dominated and spheroid-dominated systems. We found that mergers and interactions can affect the rotation curves directly or indirectly inducing a scatter in the Tully-Fisher Relation larger than…
We present novel cosmological constraints based on a joint analysis of our HII galaxies (HIIG) Hubble relation with the full Planck Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropy spectrum and the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) probes. The HII galaxies span a large redshift range $(0.088 \le z \le 2.5)$, reaching significantly higher redshifts than available SNIa and hence they probe the cosmic expansion at earlier times. Our independent constraints compare well with those based on the Pantheon compilation of SNIa data, which we also analyse. We find our results to be in agreement with the conforma…
This work uses observed galaxy surface brightness profiles at high redshifts to determine the cosmological model best suited to interpret these observations. Theoretical predictions of galactic surface brightness profiles are compared to observational data in two cosmological models, $Λ$CDM and Einstein-de Sitter, to calculate the evolutionary effects of different spacetime geometries in these profiles in order to try to find out if the available data is capable of indicating the cosmology that best represents actual galactic brightness profiles observations. Starting from the connection betwe…
Observables such as the luminosity function of galaxies, Φ(M), the projected clustering of galaxies, w_p(r_p), and the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal, ΔΣ, are often measured from galaxy redshift surveys assuming a fiducial cosmological model for calculating distances to and between galaxies. There is a growing number of studies that perform joint analyses of these measurements and constrain cosmological parameters. We quantify the amount by which such measurements systematically vary as the fiducial cosmology used for the measurements is changed, and show that these effects can be significant at…
We model the apparent clustering anisotropy of Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey using subhalos identified in cosmological $N$-body simulations. We first conduct a Markov-chain Monte Carlo analysis on the parameters characterizing subhalos hosting LRGs assuming a specific $Λ$CDM cosmology on which we run the simulations. We show that simple models with central and satellite subhalos can explain the observed multipole moments of the power spectrum up to hexadecapole on large scales ($k\lesssim0.3~h\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$). A satellite fraction of $20$ to $30$ per cent is f…
Utilizing state-of-the-art, adaptive mesh-refinement cosmological hydrodynamic simulations with ultra-high resolution (114h-1pc) and large sample size (>3300 galaxies of stellar mass >10^9Msun), we show how the stellar light of Lyman Break Galaxies at z=2 is distributed between optical/ultra-violet (UV) and far-infrared (FIR) bands. With a single scalar parameter for dust obscuration we can simultaneously reproduce the observed UV luminosity function for the entire range (3-100 Msun/yr) and extant FIR luminosity function at the bright end (>20Msun/yr). We quantify that galaxies more massive or…
We present cosmological parameter constraints based on a joint modeling of galaxy-lensing cross correlations and galaxy clustering measurements in the SDSS, marginalizing over small-scale modeling uncertainties using mock galaxy catalogs, without explicit modeling of galaxy bias. We show that our modeling method is robust to the impact of different choices for how galaxies occupy dark matter halos and to the impact of baryonic physics (at the $\sim2\%$ level in cosmological parameters) and test for the impact of covariance on the likelihood analysis and of the survey window function on the the…
Recent observations have indicated the existence of dust in high-redshift galaxies, however, the dust properties in them are still unknown. Here we present theoretical constraints on dust properties in Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z=3 by post-processing a cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation with radiative transfer calculations. We calculate the dust extinction in 2800 dark matter halos using the metallicity information of individual gas particles in our simulation. We use only bright galaxies with rest-frame UV magnitude M_1700 < -20 mag, and study the dust size, dust-to-…
Three-dimensional panchromatic dust radiative transfer calculations are performed on a set of 198 galaxies of stellar masses in the range 5x10^8-3x10^10 Msun from a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation (resolved at 29pc/h) at z=7. In a companion paper (Kimm & Cen), the stellar mass and UV luminosity functions, and UV-optical and FUV-NUV colors are shown to be in good agreement with observations, if an SMC-type dust extinction curve is adopted. Here we make useful predictions, self-consistently, of the infrared properties of these z=7 simulated galaxies that can be confronted with upcoming ALMA…
We present the results of a numerical adaptive mesh refinement hydrodynamical and N-body simulation in a $ΛCDM$ cosmology. We focus on the analysis of the main properties of massive galaxies ($M_* > 10^{11}\,M_{\odot}$) at $z=0$. For all the massive virtual galaxies we carry out a careful study of their one dimensional density, luminosity, velocity dispersion, and stellar population profiles. In order to best compare with observational data, the method to estimate the velocity dispersion is calibrated by using an approach similar to that performed in the observations, based on the stellar popu…
This paper was written as part of a book entitled: "Questions of Modern Cosmology - Galileo's Legacy" which is a celebrative book dedicated to Galileo Galilei. The book is published in 2009, the International Year of Astronomy, since it is intended to be a modern tribute to the astronomer who, 400 years ago, first pointed a telescope towards the night sky. The book is written in the form of interviews between the editors and many physicists, astrophysicists and cosmologists from all over the world. The editors engaged in several discussions on the formation and evolution of the Universe with t…
We examine the cosmic growth of the red sequence in a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation that includes a heuristic prescription for quenching star formation that yields a realistic passive galaxy population today. In this prescription, halos dominated by hot gas are continually heated to prevent their coronae from fueling new star formation. Hot coronae primarily form in halos above \sim10^12 M\odot, so that galaxies with stellar masses \sim10^10.5 M\odot are the first to be quenched and move onto the red sequence at z > 2. The red sequence is concurrently populated at low masses by satellit…
The high-z submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) can be used as background sample for gravitational lensing studies thanks to their magnification bias, which can manifest itself through a non-negligible measurement of the cross-correlation function between a background and a foreground source sample with non-overlapping redshift distributions. In particular, the choice of SMGs as background sample enhances the cross-correlation signal so as to provide an alternative and independent observable for cosmological studies regarding the probing of mass distribution. In particular the magnification bias can …
We combine a N-body simulation algorithm with a subgrid treatment of galaxy formation, mergers, and tidal destruction, and an observed conditional luminosity function Phi(L|M), to study the origin and evolution of galactic and extragalactic light inside a cosmological volume of size (100 Mpc)^3, in a concordance LCDM model. This algorithm simulates the growth of large-scale structures and the formation of clusters, the evolution of the galaxy population in clusters, the destruction of galaxies by mergers and tides, and the evolution of the intracluster light. We find that destruction of galaxi…
The origin of dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) is investigated in a global cosmological context by simultaneously following the evolution of the Milky Way Galaxy and its dwarf satellites. This approach enable to study the formation of dSphs in their proper birth environment and to reconstruct their own merging histories. The proposed picture simultaneously accounts for several dSph and Milky Way properties, including the Metallicity Distribution Functions of metal-poor stars. The observed features are interpreted in terms of physical processes acting at high redshifts.
Galaxies and their dark-matter halos have posed several challenges to the Dark Energy plus Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) cosmological model. These discrepancies between observations and theory intensify for the lowest-mass (`dwarf') galaxies. LCDM predictions for the number, spatial distribution, and internal structure of low-mass dark-matter halos have historically been at odds with observed dwarf galaxies, but this is partially expected, because many predictions modeled only the dark-matter component. Any robust LCDM prediction must include, hand-in-hand, a model for galaxy formation to understand…
We report on an update of the test on the rotation of the plane of linear polarization for light traveling over cosmological distances, using a comparison between the measured direction of the UV polarization in 8 radio galaxies at z>2 and the direction predicted by the model of scattering of anisotropic nuclear radiation, which explains the polarization. No rotation is detected within a few degrees for each galaxy and, if the rotation does not depend on direction, then the all-sky-average rotation is constrained to be θ= -0.8 +/- 2.2. We discuss the relevance of this result for constraining c…
Aims: Recently, cosmological fast radio bursts (FRBs) have been used to provide the most stringent limit up to date on Einstein's Equivalence Principle (EEP). We study how to further test EEP with FRBs. Methods: Future systematic radio surveys will certainly find abundant FRBs at cosmological distances and some of them will inevitably be located behind clusters of galaxies. Here we suggest to use those FRBs to further test EEP. Results: We find that the robustness and accuracy of testing EEP can be improved further by orders of magnitude with these FRBs. The same methodology can also be applie…
Abstract abridged. The eROSITA X-ray telescope aboard the SRG orbital observatory, in the course of its all-sky survey, is expected to detect about three million active galactic nuclei (AGN) and hundred thousand clusters and groups of galaxies. Such a sample complemented with redshift information, will open a new window into the studies of the Large-Scale structure (LSS) of the Universe and the determination of its cosmological parameters. The purpose of this work is to assess the prospects of cosmological measurements with the eROSITA sample of AGN and clusters of galaxies. We assume the avai…
We use high-resolution cosmological zoom simulations with ~200 pc resolution at z = 2 and various prescriptions for galactic outflows in order to explore the impact of winds on the morphological, dynamical, and structural properties of eight individual galaxies with halo masses ~ 10^11--2x10^12 Msun at z = 2. We present a detailed comparison to spatially and spectrally resolved Hα and other observations of z ~ 2 galaxies. We find that simulations without winds produce massive, compact galaxies with low gas fractions, super-solar metallicities, high bulge fractions, and much of the star formati…
We explore the capability of deep learning to classify cosmic structures. In cosmological simulations, cosmic volumes are segmented into voids, sheets, filaments and knots, according to the distribution and kinematics of dark matter (DM), and galaxies are also classified according to the segmentation. However, observational studies cannot adopt this classification method using DM. In this study, we demonstrate that deep learning can bridge the gap between simulations and observations. Our models are based on three-dimensional convolutional neural networks and trained with data of the distribut…
The majority of galaxies with current star-formation rates (SFRs), SFRo >= 10^-3 Msun/yr, in the Local Cosmological Volume where observations should be reliable, have the property that their observed SFRo is larger than their average star formation rate. This is in tension with the evolution of galaxies described by delayed-tau models, according to which the opposite would be expected. The tension is apparent in that local galaxies imply the star formation timescale tau approx 6.7 Gyr, much longer than the 3.5-4.5 Gyr obtained using an empirically determined main sequence at several redshifts.…
We examine the distribution of young stars associated with the spiral arms of a simulated L* cosmological disk galaxy. We find age patterns orthogonal to the arms which are not inconsistent with the predictions of classical density wave theory, a view further supported by recent observations of face-on Grand Design spirals such as M51. The distribution of metals within a simulated ~0.1L* disk is presented, reinforcing the link between star formation, the age-metallicity relation, and the metallicity distribution function.
In this work we compare three catalogues of cosmological filaments identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey by means of different algorithms by Tempel et al., Pereyra et al., and Martínez et al. We analyse how different identification techniques determine differences in the filament statistical properties: length, elongation, redshift distribution, and abundance. We find that the statistical properties of the filaments strongly depend on the identification algorithm. We use a volume limited sample of galaxies to characterise other properties of filaments such as: galaxy overdensity, luminosi…
Context. A possible correlation between CO luminosity (L_CO ) and its line width (FWHM) has been suggested and denied in the literature. Such claims were often based on a small, or heterogeneous sample of galaxies, and thus inconclusive. Aims. We aim to prove or dis-prove the L_CO -FWHM correlation. Methods. We compile a large sample of submm galaxies at z>2 from the literature, and investigate the L_CO-FWHM relation. Results. After carefully evaluating the selection effects and uncertainties such as inclination and magnification via gravitational lensing, we show that there exist a weak but s…
From mock Hubble Space Telescope images, we quantify non-parametric statistics of galaxy morphology, thereby predicting the emergence of relationships among stellar mass, star formation, and observed rest-frame optical structure at 1 < z < 3. We measure automated diagnostics of galaxy morphology in cosmological simulations of the formation of 22 central galaxies with 9.3 < log10 M_*/M_sun < 10.7. These high-spatial-resolution zoom-in calculations enable accurate modeling of the rest-frame UV and optical morphology. Even with small numbers of galaxies, we find that structural evolution is neith…
We perform Monte Carlo simulations based on current age estimates of high-z objects to forecast constraints on the equation of state (EoS) of the dark energy. In our analysis, we use two different EoS parameterizations, namely, the so-called CPL and its uncorrelated form and calculate the improvements on the figure of merit for both cases. Although there is a clear dependence of the FoM with the size and accuracy of the synthetic age samples, we find that the most substantial gain in FoM comes from a joint analysis involving age and baryon acoustic oscillation data.
We study the nature of rapidly star-forming galaxies at z=2 in cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, and compare their properties to observations of sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs). We identify simulated SMGs as the most rapidly star-forming systems that match the observed number density of SMGs. In our models, SMGs are massive galaxies sitting at the centres of large potential wells, being fed by smooth infall and gas-rich satellites at rates comparable to their star formation rates (SFR). They are not typically undergoing major mergers that significantly boost their quiescent SFR, but they s…
Hubble Space Telescope observations with Wide Field Camera 3/IR reveal that galaxies at z~7 have very blue ultraviolet (UV) colors, consistent with these systems being dominated by young stellar populations with moderate or little attenuation by dust. We investigate UV and optical properties of the high-z galaxies in the standard cold dark matter model using a high-resolution adaptive mesh refinement cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. For this purpose, we perform panchromatic three-dimensional dust radiative transfer calculations on 198 galaxies of stellar mass 5x10^8-3x10^{10} Msun with th…
The circumgalactic medium (CGM) of galaxies consists of a multiphase gas with components at very different temperatures, from $10^ {4}$ K to $10^ {7}$ K. One of the greatest puzzle about this medium is the presence of a large amount of low-temperature ($T\sim10^4$ K) gas around quiescent early-type galaxies (ETGs). Using semi-analytical parametric models, we describe the cool CGM around massive, low-redshift ETGs as the cosmological accretion of gas into their dark matter halos, resulting in an inflow of clouds from the external parts of the halos to the central galaxies. We compare our predic…
We study the density structures of dark matter subhalos for both cold dark matter and self-interacting dark matter models using high-resolution cosmological $N$-body simulations. We quantify subhalo's central density at 150 pc from the center of each subhalo at the classical dwarf spheroidal and ultrafaint dwarf scales found in Milky-Way sized halos. By comparing them with observations, we find that the self-interacting scattering cross-section of $σ/m<3\ \rm{cm^{2}g^{-1}}$ is favored. Due to the combination of hosts' tide and self-interactions, the central density of subhalos with small peric…
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which has recently become operational, is capable of detecting objects at record-breaking redshifts, $z \gtrsim 15$. This is a crucial advance for observational cosmology, as at these redshifts the differences between alternative cosmological models manifest themselves in the most obvious way. In recent years, some observational hints have emerged indicating that the Standard Cosmological Model could require correcting. One of these hints is related to the discovery of remote galaxies whose redshifts correspond to the very young Universe (less than one bi…
