The Letter addresses the relationship between hyperbolic equations of heat conduction and microscopic models of dielectrics. Effects of the non-stationary heat conduction are investigated in two one-dimensional models with conserved momentum: Fermi-Pasta-Ulam (FPU) chain and chain of rotators (CR). These models belong to different universality classes with respect to stationary heat conduction. Direct numeric simulations reveal in both models a crossover from oscillatory decay of short-wave perturbations of the temperature field to smooth diffusive decay of the long-wave perturbations. Such behavior is inconsistent with parabolic Fourier equation of the heat conduction. The crossover wavelength decreases with increase of average temperature in both models. For the FPU model the lowest order hyperbolic Cattaneo-Vernotte equation for the non-stationary heat conduction is not applicable, since no unique relaxation time can be determined.
In the study of 1D nonlinear Hamiltonian lattices, the conserved quantities play an important role in determining the actual behavior of heat conduction. Besides the total energy, total momentum and total stretch could also be conserved quantities. In microcanonical Hamiltonian dynamics, the total energy is always conserved. It was recently argued by Das and Dhar that whenever stretch (momentum) is not conserved in a 1D model, the momentum (stretch) and energy fields exhibit normal diffusion. In this work, we will systematically investigate the stretch diffusions for typical 1D nonlinear latti…
We describe results of computer simulations of steady state heat transport in a fluid of hard discs undergoing both elastic interparticle collisions and velocity randomizing collisions which do not conserve momentum. The system consists of N discs of radius r in a unit square, periodic in the y-direction and having thermal walls at x = 0 with temperature T0 taking values from 1 to 20 and at x = 1 with T1 = 1. We consider different values of the ratio between randomizing and interparticle collision rates and extrapolate results from different N, to N->infinity, r->0 such that rho=1/2. We find t…
I revisit the exactly solvable Kipnis--Marchioro--Presutti model of heat conduction [J. Stat. Phys. 27 65 (1982)] and describe, for one-dimensional systems of arbitrary sizes whose ends are in contact with thermal baths at different temperatures, a systematic characterization of their non-equilibrium stationary states. These arguments avoid resorting to the analysis of a dual process and yield a straightforward derivation of Fourier's law, as well as higher-order static correlations, such as the covariant matrix. The transposition of these results to families of gradient models generalizing th…
We show that the contact process in an ensemble with conserved total particle number, as simulated recently by Tome and de Oliveira [Phys. Rev. Lett. 86 (2001) 5463], is equivalent to the ordinary contact process, in agreement with what the authors assumed and believed. Similar conserved ensembles and equivalence proofs are easily constructed for other models.
We consider a stochastic heat conduction model for solids composed by N interacting atoms. The system is in contact with two heat baths at different temperature $T_\ell$ and $T_r$. The bulk dynamics conserve two quantities: the energy and the deformation between atoms. If $T_\ell \neq T_r$, a heat flux takes place in the system. For large $N$, the system adopts a linear temperature profile between $T_\ell$ and $T_r$. We establish the hydrodynamic limit for the two conserved quantities. We introduce the fluctuations field of the energy and of the deformation in the non-equilibrium steady state.…
We study heat conduction in one dimensional (1D) anharmonic lattices analytically and numerically by using an effective phonon theory. It is found that every effective phonon mode oscillates quasi-periodically. By weighting the power spectrum of the total heat flux in the Debye formula, we obtain a unified formalism that can explain anomalous heat conduction in momentum conserved lattices without on-site potential and normal heat conduction in lattices with on-site potential. Our results agree very well with numerical ones for existing models such as the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam model, the Frenkel-Kon…
The heat conduction behavior of one dimensional momentum conserving lattice systems with asymmetric interparticle interactions is numerically investigated. It is found that with certain degree of interaction asymmetry, the heat conductivity measured in nonequilibrium stationary states converges in the thermodynamical limit, in clear contrast to the well accepted viewpoint that Fourier's law is generally violated in low dimensional momentum conserving systems. It suggests in nonequilibrium stationary states the mass gradient resulted from the asymmetric interactions may provide an additional ph…
The ding-a-ling model is a kind of half lattice and half hard-point-gas (HPG) model. The original ding-a-ling model proposed by Casati {\it et.al} does not conserve total momentum and has been found to exhibit normal heat conduction behavior. Recently, a modified ding-a-ling model which conserves total momentum has been studied and normal heat conduction has also been claimed. In this work, we propose a full lattice ding-a-ling model without hard point collisions where total momentum is also conserved. We investigate the heat conduction and energy diffusion of this full lattice ding-a-ling mod…
We propose a stochastic order parameter equation for describing phase coexistence in steady heat conduction near equilibrium. By analyzing the stochastic dynamics with a non-equilibrium adiabatic boundary condition, where total energy is conserved over time, we derive a variational principle that determines thermodynamic properties in non-equilibrium steady states. The resulting variational principle indicates that the temperature of the interface between the ordered region and the disordered region becomes greater (less) than the equilibrium transition temperature in the linear response regim…
We study heat conduction in one-dimensional granular gases. In particular, we consider two mechanisms of viscous dissipation during inter-grain collisions. In one, the dissipative force is proportional to the grain's velocity and dissipates not only energy but also momentum. In the other, the dissipative force is proportional to the relative velocity of the grains and therefore conserves momentum even while dissipating energy. This allows us to explore the role of momentum conservation in the heat conduction properties of this one-dimensional nonlinear system. We find normal thermal conduction…
The paper investigates non-stationary heat conduction in one-dimensional models with substrate potential. In order to establish universal characteristic properties of the process, we explore three different models --- Frenkel-Kontorova (FK), phi4+ ($ϕ^4$+) and phi4- ($ϕ^4-$). Direct numeric simulations reveal in all these models a crossover from oscillatory decay of short-wave perturbations of the temperature field to smooth diffusive decay of the long-wave perturbations. Such behavior is inconsistent with parabolic Fourier equation of the heat conduction and clearly demonstrates the necessity…
Non-equilibrium real-space condensation is a phenomenon in which a finite fraction of some conserved quantity (mass, particles, etc.) becomes spatially localised. We review two popular stochastic models of hopping particles that lead to condensation and whose stationary states assume a factorized form: the zero-range process and the misanthrope process, and their various modifications. We also introduce a new model - a misanthrope process with parallel dynamics - that exhibits condensation and has a pair-factorized stationary state.
There is a well-known mapping between energy normal (super-) diffusion and normal (anomalous) heat conduction in one-dimensional (1D) nonlinear lattices. The momentum conserving nonlinear lattices exhibit energy super-diffusion behavior with the only exception of coupled rotator model. Yet, for all other 1D momentum nonconserving nonlinear lattices studied so far, the energy diffusion or heat conduction is normal. Here we propose a 1D nonlinear lattice model with negative couplings, which is momentum non-conserving due to the translational symmetry breaking. Our numerical results show that ene…
There is a growing interest in the stochastic processes of nonequilibrium systems subject to non-conserved forces, such as the magnetic forces acting on charged particles and the chiral self-propelled force acting on active particles. In this paper, we consider the stationary transport of non-interacting Brownian particles under a constant magnetic field in a position-dependent temperature background. We demonstrate the existence of the Nernst-like stationary density current perpendicular to both the temperature gradient and magnetic field, induced by the intricate coupling between the non-con…
We study the transmission coefficient of a plane wave through a 1D finite quasi-periodic system -- the Frenkel-Kontorova (FK) model -- embedding in an infinite uniform harmonic chain. By varying the mass of atoms in the infinite uniform chain, we obtain the transmission coefficients for {\it all} eigenfrequencies. The phonon localization of the incommensurated FK chain is also studied in terms of the transmission coefficients and the Thouless exponents. Moreover, the heat conduction of Rubin-Greer-like model for FK chain at low temperature is calculated. It is found that the stationary heat fl…
We study heat conduction in a harmonic crystal whose bulk dynamics is supplemented by random reversals (flips) of the velocity of each particle at a rate $λ$. The system is maintained in a nonequilibrium stationary state(NESS) by contacts with Langevin reservoirs at different temperatures. We show that the one-body and pair correlations in this system are the same (after an appropriate mapping of parameters) as those obtained for a model with self-consistent reservoirs. This is true both for the case of equal and random(quenched) masses. While the heat conductivity in the NESS of the ordered s…
We numerically investigate the stationary and non-equilibrium critical dynamics in three-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnets. Since the non-conserved staggered magnetization couples dynamically to the conserved magnetization density, we employ a hybrid simulation algorithm that combines reversible spin precession with relaxational Kawasaki spin exchange processes. We measure the dynamic critical exponent and identify a suitable intermediate time window to obtain the aging scaling exponents. Our results support an earlier renormalization group prediction: While the critical aging …
Recent work on the dynamics of a crystal surface [T.Frisch and A.Verga, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 166104 (2006)] has focused the attention on the conserved Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (CKS) equation: \partial_t u = -\partial_{xx}(u+u_{xx}+u_x^2), which displays coarsening. For a quantitative and qualitative understanding of the dynamics, the analysis of steady states is particularly relevant. In this paper we provide a detailed study of the stationary solutions and their explicit form is given. Periodic configurations form an increasing branch in the space wavelength-amplitude (lambda-A), with d(lambda)/d…
In the context of the problem of heat conduction in one-dimensional systems, we present an analytical calculation of the instantaneous energy transfer across a tagged particle in a one-dimensional gas of equal-mass, hard-point particles. From this, we obtain a formula for the steady-state energy flux, and identify and separate the mechanical work and heat conduction contributions to it. The nature of the Fourier law for the model, and the nonlinear dependence of the rate of mechanical work on the stationary drift velocity of the tagged particle, are analyzed and elucidated.
Deriving macroscopic phenomenological laws of irreversible thermodynamics from simple microscopic models is one of the tasks of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. We consider stationary energy transport in crystals with reference to simple mathematical models consisting of coupled oscillators on a lattice. The role of lattice dimensionality on the breakdown of the Fourier's law is discussed and some universal quantitative aspects are emphasized: the divergence of the finite-size thermal conductivity is characterized by universal laws in one and two dimensions. Equilibrium and non-equilibri…
We investigate a class of anharmonic crystals in $d$ dimensions, $d\ge 1$, coupled to both external and internal heat baths of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type. The external heat baths, applied at the boundaries in the 1-direction, are at specified, unequal, temperatures $\tlb$ and $\trb$. The temperatures of the internal baths are determined in a self-consistent way by the requirement that there be no net energy exchange with the system in the non-equilibrium stationary state (NESS). We prove the existence of such a stationary self-consistent profile of temperatures for a finite system and show it…
We study long-range interacting systems perturbed by external stochastic forces. Unlike the case of short-range systems, where stochastic forces usually act locally on each particle, here we consider perturbations by external stochastic fields. The system reaches stationary states where external forces balance dissipation on average. These states do not respect detailed balance and support non-vanishing fluxes of conserved quantities. We generalize the kinetic theory of isolated long-range systems to describe the dynamics of this non-equilibrium problem. The kinetic equation that we obtain app…
In this paper, we introduce a conduction model of Fermi particles on a finite sample, and investigate the asymptotic behavior of stationary current for large sample size. In our model a sample is described by a one-dimensional finite lattice on which Fermi particles injected at both ends move under various potentials and noise from the environment. We obtain a simple current formula. The formula has broad applicability and is used to study various potentials. When the noise is absent, it provides the asymptotic behavior of the current in terms of a transfer matrix. In particular, for dynamical…
We consider the non-conserved dynamics of the Ising model on the two-dimensional square lattice, where each spin is influenced preferentially by its East and North neighbours. The single-spin flip rates are such that the stationary state is Gibbsian with respect to the usual ferromagnetic Ising Hamiltonian. We show the existence, in the paramagnetic phase, of a dynamical transition between two regimes of violation of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem in the nonequilibrium stationary state: a regime of weak violation where the stationary fluctuation-dissipation ratio is finite, when the asymm…
We consider a one dimensional infinite acoustic chain of harmonic oscillators whose dynamics is perturbed by a random exchange of velocities, such that the energy and momentum of the chain are conserved. Consequently, the evolution of the system has only three conserved quantities: volume, momentum and energy. We show the existence of two space--time scales on which the en- ergy of the system evolves. On the hyperbolic scale (t$ε$--1,x$ε$--1) the limits of the conserved quantities satisfy a Euler system of equa- tions, while the thermal part of the energy macroscopic profile re- mains stationa…
We study the nonequilibrium properties of directed Ising models with non conserved dynamics, in which each spin is influenced by only a subset of its nearest neighbours. We treat the following models: (i) the one-dimensional chain; (ii) the two-dimensional square lattice; (iii) the two-dimensional triangular lattice; (iv) the three-dimensional cubic lattice. We raise and answer the question: (a) Under what conditions is the stationary state described by the equilibrium Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution? We show that for models (i), (ii), and (iii), in which each spin "sees" only half of its neighbo…
We study heat conduction in one dimensional mass disordered harmonic and anharmonic lattices. It is found that the thermal conductivity $κ$ of the disordered anharmonic lattice is finite at low temperature, whereas it diverges as $κ\sim N^{0.43}$ at high temperature. Moreover, we demonstrate that a unique nonequilibrium stationary state in the disordered harmonic lattice does not exist at all.
We derive a large-scale hydrodynamic equation, including diffusive and dissipative effects, for systems with generic static position-dependent driving forces coupling to local conserved quantities. We show that this equation predicts entropy increase and thermal states as the only stationary states. The equation applies to any hydrodynamic system with any number of local, PT-symmetric conserved quantities, in arbitrary dimension. It is fully expressed in terms of elements of an extended Onsager matrix. In integrable systems, this matrix admits an expansion in the density of excitations. We eva…

It has recently been shown that some integrable spin chains possess a set of quasilocal conserved charges, with the classic example being the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ XXZ Heisenberg chain. These charges have been proven to be essential for properly describing stationary states after a quantum quench, and must be included in the generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE). We find that similar charges are also necessary for the GGE description of integrable quantum field theories with non-diagonal scattering. A stationary state in a non-diagonal scattering theory is completely specified by fixing the mode-ocupp…
