We study a specific texture of the neutrino mass matrix, namely the models with one $2\times 2$ subdeterminant equal to zero. We carry out a complete phenomenological analysis with all possible relevant correlations. Every pattern of the six possible ones is found able to accommodate the experimental data, with three cases allowing also for non-invertible mass matrices. We present symmetry realizations for all the models.
We study the existence of one/two texture zeros or one/two vanishing minors in the neutrino mass matrix with $μτ$ symmetry. In the basis where the charged lepton mass matrix and the Dirac neutrino mass matrix are diagonal, the one/two zeros or one/two vanishing minors in the right-handed Majorana mass matrix having $μτ$ symmetry will propagate via seesaw mechanism as one/two vanishing minors or one/two texture zeros in the neutrino mass matrix with $μτ$ symmetry respectively. It is found that only five such texture structures of the neutrino mass matrix are phenomenologically viable. For tribi…
We construct the $CP$-odd weak basis invariants in the flavor basis for all the phenomenologically viable neutrino mass matrices with a texture zero and a vanishing minor and, also, find the necessary and sufficient conditions for $CP$ invariance . We examine the interrelationships between different $CP$-odd weak basis invariants for these texture structures and investigate their implications for Dirac- and Majorana-type $CP$ violation.
In this work we carry out a systematic texture study of the neutrino mass matrix with the ansatzes - (i) one vanishing minor and (ii) the zero sum of the mass eigenvalues with the CP phases (henceforth vanishing trace). There are six possible textures of a neutrino mass matrix with one vanishing minor. The viability of each texture is checked with $3σ$ values of current neutrino data by drawing scatter plots. In our analysis we are motivated to use the ratio of solar to atmospheric mass-squared differences $R_ν$ for its precise measurement (and also the atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$) to co…
In the flavor basis there are seven cases of two vanishing minors in the neutrino mass matrix which can accommodate the present neutrino oscillation data including the recent T2K data. It is found that two of these cases, namely $B_5$ and $B_6$ predict near maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing in the limit of large effective neutrino mass. This feature remains irrespective of the values of solar and reactor mixing angles. A non-zero reactor mixing angle is naturally accommodated in these textures.
In this paper, we carry out a numerical and systematic analysis of the neutrino mass textures, which contain one vanishing minor and an equality between two cofactors. Among 60 logically possible textures, only eight of them are excluded for both normal and inverted hierarchy by the current experimental data at 3σlevel. We also demonstrate that the future long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, especially for the measurement of θ23 mixing angle, will play the important role in the model selection. The phenomenological implications from neutrinoless double beta decay and the cosmology o…
We study the implications of the simultaneous existence of a texture zero and a vanishing minor in the neutrino mass matrix. There are thirty six possible texture structures of this type, twenty one of which reduce to two texture zero cases which have, already, been extensively studied. Of the remaining fifteen textures only six are allowed by the current data. We examine the phenomenological implications of the allowed texture structures for Majorana type CP-violating phases, 1-3 mixing angle and Dirac type CP-violating phase. All these possible textures can be generated through the seesaw me…
Light sterile neutrinos with masses at the sub-eV or eV scale are hinted by current experimental and cosmological data. Assuming the Majorana nature of these hypothetical particles, we discuss their effects in the neutrinoless double beta decay by exploring the implications of a vanishing effective Majorana neutrino mass. Allowed ranges of neutrino masses, mixing angles and Majorana CP-violating phases are illustrated in some instructive cases for both normal and inverted mass hierarchies of three active neutrinos.
Augmenting the Standard Model by three right-handed neutrinos allows for an anomaly-free gauge group extension G_max = U(1)_(B-L) x U(1)_(L_e-L_mu) x U(1)_(L_mu-L_tau). While simple U(1) subgroups of G_max have already been discussed in the context of approximate flavor symmetries, we show how two-zero textures in the right-handed neutrino Majorana mass matrix can be enforced by the flavor symmetry, which is spontaneously broken very economically by singlet scalars. These zeros lead to two vanishing minors in the low-energy neutrino mass matrix after the seesaw mechanism. This study may provid…
We study the phenomenological implications of the recent neutrino data for class B of two texture zeros and two vanishing cofactors for Majorana neutrinos in the flavor basis. We find that classes $B_{1}$($B_2$) of two texture zeros and classes $B_5$($B_6$) of two vanishing cofactors have similar predictions for neutrino oscillation parameters for the same mass hierarchy. Similar predictions for classes $B_3$($B_4$) of two texture zeros and classes $B_3$($B_4$) of two vanishing cofactors are expected. However, a preference for a shift in the quadrant of the Dirac-type CP violating phase($δ$) i…
In the light of latest neutrino oscillation data, we have investigated the one zero Majorana neutrino mass matrix $M_ν$ with zero sum condition of mass eigen values in the flavor basis, where charged lepton mass matrix is diagonal. Among the six possible one-zero cases, it is found that only five can survive the current experimental data, while case with (1, 1) vanishing element of $M_ν$ is ruled out, if zero trace condition is imposed at 3$σ$ confidence level (CL). Numerical and some approximate analytical results are presented.

In the light of non-zero and relatively large value of rector mixing angle ($θ_{13}$), we have performed a detailed analysis of texture one zero neutrino mass matrix $M_ν$ in the scenario of vanishing determinant/trace conditions , assuming the Dirac nature of neutrinos. In both the scenarios, normal mass ordering is ruled out for all the six possibilities of $M_ν$, however for inverted mass ordering, only two are found to be viable with the current neutrino oscillation data at $3σ$ confidence level. Numerical and some approximate analytical results are presented.
The magnetic moment and vanishing charge of a Dirac neutrino are physically observable quantities and must not depend on the choice of gauge in a consistent quantum field theory. We verify this statement explicitly at the one loop level in both R_xi and unitary gauges of the minimally extended standard model. We accomplish this by manipulating directly the integrands of loop integrals and employing simple algebraic identities and integral relations. Our result generally applies for any masses of the relevant particles and unitary neutrino mixing.
We consider a texture for the neutrino mass matrix characterized by one vanishing $2\times2$ subtrace. We analyze phenomenologically and analytically all the six possible patterns, and show that all non-singular ones are able to accommodate the experimental bounds, whereas singular patterns allow only for four inverted-hierarchy type textures. We then present some possible realizations of this texture, within seesaw scenarios, either directly or indirectly by relating it to zero-textures.
We consider a chiral gauge theory from which light composite Dirac neutrinos dynamically emerge, augmented by a QCD axion to solve the strong CP problem. We show that an interplay between the composite sector and the axion can also simultaneously lead to successful baryogenesis and generate a correct dark matter abundance via "co-genesis" without contradicting present constraints. We predict $ΔN_{\rm eff} \geq 0.14$ and $m_a$ in the range $O(1)\>{\rm μeV}$--$O(10)\>{\rm meV}$, which can be firmly tested by upcoming CMB experiments and axion searches.
We investigate the texture structures of lepton mass matrices with four (five) non-zero elements in the charged lepton mass matrix and three (four) vanishing cofactors in the neutrino mass matrix. Using weak basis transformations, all possible textures for three and four vanishing cofactors in $M_ν$ are grouped into 7 classes and predictions for the unknown parameters such as the Dirac CP violating phase and the effective Majorana mass for the phenomenologically allowed textures have been obtained. We, also, illustrate how such texture structures can be realized using discrete Abelian flavor s…
In the light of latest data of neutrino oscillation experiments, we carry out a systematic investigation on the texture structures of Majorana neutrino mass matrix $M_ν$, which contain one vanishing neutrino mass and an equality between two matrix elements. Among 15 logically possible patterns, it is found that for norm order ($m_{3}>m_{2}>m_{1}=0$) of neutrino masses only five of them are compatible with recent experimental data at the $3σ$ level, while for inverted order ($m_{2}>m_{1}>m_{3}=0$) ten patterns is phenomenologically allowed. In the numerical analysis, we perform a scan over the …
We present a full phenomenological and analytical study for the neutrino mass matrix characterized by two vanishing $2\times2$ subtraces. We update one past result in light of the recent experimental data. Out of the fifteen possible textures, we find seven cases can accommodate the experimental data instead of eight ones in the past study. We also introduce few symmetry realizations for viable and nonviable textures based on non-abelian ($A_4$ or $S_4$) flavor symmetry within type II seesaw scenario.
Assuming Majorana nature of neutrinos, we investigate the singular one texture zero neutrino mass matrices in the flavor basis. We find that for the normal mass ordering with $m_1=0$, all the six one texture zero classes are now ruled out at 3$σ$ confidence level, whereas for inverted mass ordering with $m_3=0$ only four classes out of total six can accommodate the latest neutrino oscillation data at 3$σ$ confidence level. Moreover, only two classes can accommodate the present data at 1$σ$ confidence level. We examine the phenomenological implications of the allowed classes for the effective M…
The Tri-Bimaximal (TBM) mixing predicts a vanishing $θ_{13}$. This can be attributed to the inherited $μ-τ$ symmetry of TBM mixing. We break its $μ-τ$ symmetry by adding a complex magic matrix with one variable to TBM neutrino mass matrix with one vanishing eigenvalue. We present two such textures and study their phenomenological implications.
The non-zero and sizable value of $U_{e3}$ puts pressure on flavor symmetry models which predict an initially vanishing value. Hence, the tradition of relating fermion mixing matrix elements with fermion mass ratios might need to be resurrected. We note that the recently observed non-vanishing value of $U_{e3}$ can be related numerically to the ratio of solar and atmospheric mass-squared differences. The most straightforward realization of this can be achieved with a combination of texture zeros and a vanishing neutrino mass. We analyze the implications of some of these possibilities and const…
The EW-$ν_R$ model was constructed to provide a scenario in which right-handed neutrinos are non-sterile and have masses proportional to the electroweak scale, providing an opportunity to test the seesaw mechanism at the LHC. What was hidden in the model until recently is the chiral symmetry which helps solve the strong CP problem by using it to rotate $θ_{QCD}$ to zero. It turns out the contribution from the electroweak sector to the effective $\barθ$ is proportional to the light neutrino masses and is naturally small, satisfying the constraint coming from the present absence of the neutron e…
In this paper, we investigate the noval possibilities of hybrid textures comprising a vanishing minor (or element) and two equal elements (or cofactors) in light neutrino mass matrix $M_ν$. Such type of texture structures lead to sixty phenomenological cases each, out of which only fifty six are viable with texture containing a vanishing minor and an equality between the elements in $M_ν$, while fifty are found to be viable with texture containing a vanishing element and an equality of cofactors in $M_ν$ under the current experimental test at 3$σ$ confidence level. Detailed numerical analysis …
We emphasize that the vanishing of the CP asymmetry in leptogenesis, previously observed for models with tri-bimaximal mixing and family symmetry, may be traced to a property of the type I see-saw mechanism satisfied by such models known as Form Dominance, corresponding to the case of a diagonal Casas-Ibarra R-matrix. Form Dominance leads to vanishing flavour-dependent CP asymmetries irrespective of whether one has tri-bimaximal mixing or a family symmetry. Successful leptogenesis requires violation of Form Dominance, but not necessarily violation of tri bimaximal mixing. This may be achieved …
We discuss the realization of a vanishing effective Higgs potential at the Planck scale, which is required by the multiple-point criticality principle (MPCP), in the standard model with singlet scalar dark matter and a right-handed neutrino. We find the scalar dark matter and the right-handed neutrino play crucial roles for realization of the MPCP, where a neutrino Yukawa becomes effective above the Majorana mass of the right-handed neutrino. Once the top mass is fixed, the MPCP at the (reduced) Planck scale and the suitable dark matter relic abundance determine the dark matter mass, $m_S$, an…
A new solution to the strong CP problem with distinct experimental signatures at the LHC is proposed. It is based on the Yukawa interactions between mirror quarks, Standard Model (SM) quarks and Higgs singlets. (Mirror quarks and leptons which include non-sterile right-handed neutrinos whose Majorana masses are proportional to the electroweak scale, form the basis of the EW-$ν_R$ model.) The aforementioned Yukawa couplings can in general be complex and can contribute to $Arg\, Det M$ ($\barθ = θ_{QCD} + Arg\, Det M$) at tree-level. The crux of matter in this manuscript is the fact that {\em no…
The relatively large value of neutrino mixing angle θ_{13} set by recent measurements allows us to use solar neutrinos to set a limit on neutrino magnetic moment involving second and third families, μ_{μτ}. The existence of a random magnetic field in solar convective zone can produce a significant anti-neutrino flux when a non-vanishing neutrino magnetic moment is assumed. Even if we consider a vanishing neutrino magnetic moment involving the first family, electron anti-neutrinos are indirectly produced through the mixing between first and third families and non-vanishing μ_{μτ}. Using KamLAND…
We prove that, in any flavor transition, neutrino oscillation CP violating asymmetries in matter have two disentangled components: i) a CPT-odd T-invariant term, non-vanishing iff there are interactions with matter; ii) a T-odd CPT-invariant term, non-vanishing iff there is genuine CP violation. As function of the baseline, these two terms are distinct L-even and L-odd observables to separately test (i) matter effects sensitive to the neutrino hierarchy and (ii) genuine CP violation in the neutrino sector. For the golden $ν_μ\to ν_e$ channel, the different energy distributions of the two compo…
We present results of our search for X-ray line emission associated with the radiative decay of the sterile neutrino, a well-motivated dark matter candidate, in Suzaku Observatory spectra of the Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. These data represent the first deep observation of one of these extreme mass-to-light systems and the first dedicated dark matter search using an X-ray telescope. No such emission line is positively detected, and we place new constraints on the combination of the sterile neutrino mass and the active-sterile neutrino oscillation mixing angle. Line flux upper limits ar…
In this paper we study the phenomenological implications of the one zero textures of low energy neutrino mass matrices in presence of a sterile neutrino. We consider the 3+1 scheme and use the results from global fit for short baseline neutrino oscillation data which provides the bounds on the three additional mixing angles. We find that the mass matrix elements $m_{αβ}$ ($α, β= e, μ, τ$) involving only the active states can assume vanishing values in the allowed parameter space for all the mass spectrum. Among the mass matrix elements connecting the active and sterile states, $m_{es}$ and $m_…
We present a mechanism which drives Dirac neutrino masses to tiny values along the Renormalization Group flow, starting from an asymptotically safe ultraviolet completion of the third generation of the Standard Model including quantum gravity. At the same time, the mechanism produces a mass-splitting between the neutrino and the quark sector and also generates the mass splitting between top and bottom quark. The mechanism hinges on the hypercharges of the fermions and produces a tiny neutrino Yukawa coupling, because the right-handed neutrino is sterile and does not carry hypercharge.
This work proposes two models of neutrino masses that predict non-zero $θ_{13}$ under the non-Abelian discrete flavor symmetry $\mathbb{S}_3\otimes\mathbb{Z}_2$. We advocate that the size of $θ_{13}$ is understood as a group theoretical consequence rather than a perturbed effect from the tri-bi-maximal mixing. So, the difference of two models is designed only in terms of the flavor symmetry, by changing the charge assignment of righthanded neutrinos. The PMNS matrix in the first model is obtained from both mass matrices, charged leptons giving rise to non-zero $θ^l_{13}$ and neutrino masses gi…
In this work we have re-investigated two different kinds of texture zero ansatz of the low energy neutrino mass matrix in view of the Dark-Large-Mixing-Angle (DLMA) solution of the solar neutrino problem which can arise in the presence of non-standard interactions. In particular we revisit the cases of (i) one zero mass matrices when the lowest neutrino mass is zero and (ii) one zero texture with a vanishing minor. In our study we find that for most of the cases, the texture zero conditions which are allowed for the LMA solution, are also allowed for the DLMA solution. However, we found two te…
It is shown that the inherent quadratic divergence of the Higgs mass renormalization of the standard model may be avoided in the well-studied scotogenic model of radiative neutrino mass as well as other analogous extensions.
In this paper, we derive in a novel approach the possible textures of neutrino mass matrix that can lead to maximal atmospherical mixing angle ($θ^{}_{23} = π/4$) and Dirac CP phase ($δ= - π/2$) in two phenomenologically appealing scenarios: (1) one neutrino mass matrix element being vanishing (2) one neutrino mass being vanishing. For the obtained textures, some neutrino mass sum rules which relate the neutrino masses and mixing parameters will emerge. With the help of these sum rules, the unknown absolute neutrino mass scale and Majorana CP phases can be determined. Some discussions about th…
We have investigated a possible connection between the Majorana phases and geometric parameters of leptonic unitarity triangle(LUT) in two-texture zero neutrino mass matrix. Such analytical relations can, also, be obtained for other theoretical models viz. hybrid textures, neutrino mass matrix with vanishing minors and have profound implications for geometric description of $CP$ violation. As an example, we have considered two-texture zero neutrino mass model to obtain relation between Majorana phases and LUT parameters. In particular, we find that Majorana phases depend on only one of the thr…
The flavour neutrino puzzle is often addressed by considering neutrino mass matrices $m$ with a certain number of vanishing entries ($m_{ij}=0$ for some values of the indices), since a reduction in the number of free parameters increases the predictive power. Symmetries that can enforce textures zero can also enforce a more general type of conditions $f(m_{ij})=0$ with $f$ some function of the matrix elements $m_{ij}$. In this case $m$ can have all entries non-vanishing with no reduction in its predictive power. We classify all generation-dependent $U(1)$ symmetries which, in the presence of t…
