In this work we have re-investigated two different kinds of texture zero ansatz of the low energy neutrino mass matrix in view of the Dark-Large-Mixing-Angle (DLMA) solution of the solar neutrino problem which can arise in the presence of non-standard interactions. In particular we revisit the cases of (i) one zero mass matrices when the lowest neutrino mass is zero and (ii) one zero texture with a vanishing minor. In our study we find that for most of the cases, the texture zero conditions which are allowed for the LMA solution, are also allowed for the DLMA solution. However, we found two textures belonging to the case of one zero texture with a vanishing minor where LMA solution does not give a viable solution whereas DLMA solution does. We analyze all the possible texture zero cases belonging to these two kinds of texture zero structures in detail and present correlations between different parameters. We also present the predictions for the effective neutrino mass governing neutrino-less double beta decay for the allowed textures.
We analyze the effect of the Dark-large mixing angle (DLMA) solution on the effective Majorana mass ($m_{ββ}$) governing neutrino-less double beta decay ($0νββ$) in the presence of a sterile neutrino. We consider the 3+1 picture, comprising of one additional sterile neutrino. We have checked that the MSW resonance in the sun can take place in the DLMA parameter space in this scenario. Next we investigate how the values of the solar mixing angle $θ_{12}$ corresponding to the DLMA region alter the predictions of $m_{ββ}$ including a sterile neutrino in the analysis. We also compare our results w…
Electroweak radiative corrections can generate the neutrino (mass)$^2$ difference required for the large mixing angle solution (LMA) to the solar neutrino problem if two of the neutrinos are assumed degenerate at high energy. We test this possibility with the existing experimental knowledge of the low energy neutrino mass and mixing parameters. We derive restrictions on ranges of the high scale mixing matrix elements and obtain predictions for the low energy parameters required in order to get the LMA solution of the solar neutrino problem picked out by KamLAND. We find that in the case of sta…
In this work we have investigated the phenomenological consequences of two-zero textures of \textit{inverse} neutrino mass matrix ($M_ν^{-1}$) in light of the large mixing angle (LMA) and large mixing angle-\textit{dark} (LMA-D) solutions, later of which originates if neutrinos exhibit non-standard interactions with matter. Out of fifteen possibilities, only seven two-zero textures of $M_ν^{-1}$ are found to be phenomenologically allowed under LMA and/or LMA-D descriptions. In particular, five textures are in consonance with both LMA and LMA-D solutions and are necessarily $CP$ violating while…
We study the possibility of texture zeros in Majorana light neutrino mass matrix in the light of dark large mixing angle (DLMA) solution to solar neutrino problem where solar mixing angle ($\sin^2{θ_{12}}\simeq 0.7 $) lies in the second octant instead of first octant in standard large mixing angle (LMA) scenario ($\sin^2{θ_{12}}\simeq 0.3 $). In three neutrino scenario, we find that LMA and DLMA solutions lead to different set of allowed and disallowed textures with one and two zeros. While being consistent with existing bounds from neutrino oscillation data, neutrinoless double beta decay and…
We analyze a model based on SUSY SO(10) combined with SU(2) family symmetry and symmetric mass matrices constructed by the authors recently. Previously, only the parameter space for the LOW and vacuum oscillation (VO) solutions was investigated. We indicate in this note the parameter space which leads to large mixing angle (LMA) solution to the solar neutrino problem with a slightly modified effective neutrino mass matrix. The symmetric mass textures arising from the left-right symmetry breaking and the SU(2) symmetry breaking give rise to very good predictions for the quark and lepton masses …
In order to explain the recently reported result on the double beta decay $(0νββ)$ experiment, together with the earlier established data on LMA MSW solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations, we generate the textures of the nearly degenerate as well as the inverted hierarchical models of the left-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrices within the framework of the see-saw mechanism in a model independent way. The leptonic mixings are generated from the texture of the right- handed Majorana mass matrices while keeping the Dirac neutrino mass matrices in diagonal forms.
An attempt is made to generate the bimaximal mixings of the three species of neutrinos from the textures of the right-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrices. We extend our earlier work in this paper for the generation of the nearly degenerate as well as the inverted hierarchical models of the left-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrices using the non-diagonal textures of the right-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrices and the diagonal form of the Dirac neutrino mass matrices, within the frame work of the seesaw mechanism in a model independent way. Such Majorana neutrino mass models are import…
We study the implications on an important result on radiative corrections (JM conjecture) which states that the solar mass scale $\bigtriangleup m^2_{21}$ corresponding to the large mixing angle (LMA) MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem, can be generated through radiative corrections in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) if two of the neutrino masses having opposite CP parity, are assumed to be degenerate and have non-zero value of $U_{e3}$ at high energy scale. We show that the above conjecture can be derived when we take the static solution of mixing angles from the gene…
Current solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation data seem to favor a bimaximal pattern for neutrino mixings where the matrix elements U_{e2} and U_{μ3} are of order one, while U_{e3} is much smaller. We show that such a pattern can be obtained quite easily in theories with ``lopsided'' mass matrices for the charged leptons and the down type quarks. A relation connecting the solar and atmospheric neutrino mixing angles is derived, \tan^2θ_{atm} \simeq 1+ \tan^2θ_{sol}, which predicts \sin^2 2θ_{atm} \simeq 0.97 corresponding to the best fit LMA solution for solar neutrinos. Predictive scheme…
An updated analysis of all available neutrino oscillation evidence in Solar experiments including the latest $SNO$ data is presented. Predictions for total rates and day-night asymmetry in Borexino are calculated. Our analysis features the use of exhaustive computation of the neutrino oscillation probabilities and the use of an improved statistical $χ^2$ minimization. In the framework of two neutrino oscillations we conclude that the best fit to the data is obtained in the LMA region with parameters $(Δm^2, \tan^2θ) = (5.2 \times 10^{-5} \eV^2, 0.47)$, ($χ^2_{min}/n=0.82$, $n=38$ degrees of fr…
We have discussed the quark-lepton mass matrices with the U(1) flavor symmetry in SU(5), which lead to the large mixing angle MSW solution of solar neutrinos. The solar neutrino solution depends on the next-leading terms in the neutrino mass matrix. We have found the lepton mass matrices with the $U(1)\times Z_2$ symmetry, which give the LMA-MSW solution uniquely. The coefficients of the matrix elements of the charged leptons are constrained strongly due to the bound of $U_{e3}$ in the CHOOZ experiment.
We study the implications of the Dark-LMA solution to the solar neutrino problem for neutrino-less double beta decay ($0νββ$ ). We show that while the predictions for the effective mass governing $0νββ$ remains unchanged for the inverted mass scheme, that for normal ordering becomes higher for the Dark-LMA parameter space and moves into the "desert region" between the two. This sets a new goal for sensitvity reach for the next generation experiments if no signal is found for the inverted ordering by the future search programmes.
We have analysed the recent results from the observation of charged current ν_e d \to e^- p p events from solar neutrinos by the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory SNO assuming neutrino oscillations with three active flavours. The data seem to prefer a low mass-squared difference and large mixing angle solution (the so-called LOW solution) in (12) parameter space. However, when combined with the Gallium charged current interaction data from Gallex and GNO, distinct (1σ) allowed regions corresponding to the large mixing angle (LMA) and small mixing angle (SMA) appear while the LOW solution is disfavo…
Lepton mass matrices similar to texture 4 zero quark mass matrices, known to be quite successful in explaining the CKM phenomenology, have been considered for finding the mixing matrix element U_{e3} (\equiv s_{13}) respecting the CHOOZ constraint, with s_{12} and Δm_{12}^2 constrained by SNP and s_{23} and Δm_{23}^2 constrained by ANP. Taking charged lepton mass matrix M_l to be diagonal, we find that the ranges of s_{13} corresponding to different SNP solutions very well include the corresponding values of s_{13} found by Akhmedov et al. by considering neutrino mass matrix M_ν with no textur…
The first KamLAND results are in a very good agreement with the predictions made on the basis of the solar neutrino data and the LMA realization of the MSW mechanism. We perform a combined analysis of the KamLAND (rate, spectrum) and the solar neutrino data with a free boron neutrino flux f_B. The best fit values of neutrino parameters are Delta m^2 = 7.3e-5 eV^2, tg^2 theta = 0.41 and f_B = 1.05 with the 1 sigma intervals: Delta m^2 = (6.2 - 8.4)e-5 eV^2, tg^2 theta = 0.33 - 0.54. We find the 3 sigma upper bounds: Delta m^2 < 2.8e-4 eV^2 and tg^2 theta < 0.84, and the lower bound Delta m^2 > …
Phenomenological implications of a class of lepton mass matrices with parallel texture structure have been examined and phenomenologically interesting constraints on charged lepton and neutrino mass matrix parameters have been obtained.
Implications of texture specific mass matrices have been investigated for both quarks and neutrinos. Interestingly, for the case of quarks Fritzsch-like texture 4 zero mass matrices have been found to be compatible with the present precisely known sin2βas well as other precise CKM matrix elements. In the case of leptonic mass matrices, for both Majorana and Dirac neutrinos we find that for texture 4, 5, 6 zero mass matrices the inverted hierarchy and degenerate scenarios of neutrino masses are ruled out by the present data.
It is shown how the two experimentally measurable properties of the mixing matrix $V$, the asymmetry Delta(V)=|V_{12}|^2- |V_{21}|^2 of V with respect to the main diagonal and the Jarlskog invariant J(V)=Im(V_{11}V_{12}^*V_{21}^*V_{22}), can be exploited to obtain constraints on possible structures of mass matrices in the quark sector. Specific mass matrices are examined in detail as an illustration.
Implications of the lepton mixing angles, in particular of theta_13, have been investigated for minimal as well as non-minimal Fritzsch-like textures for the case of Majorana neutrinos. Both, in minimal texture (texture 6 zero lepton mass matrices) and non-minimal textures (two cases of texture 5 zero lepton mass matrices), inverted hierarchy and degenerate scenario of neutrino masses have been ruled out. The implications of theta_13 have been investigated on the lightest neutrino mass m_ν_1 as well as the effective Majorana mass m_ee.
A class of neutrino mass matrices with texture zeros realizable using the group $Z_3$ within the framework of type (I+II) seesaw mechanism naturally admits a non-zero $θ_{13}$ and allows for deviations from maximal mixing. The phenomenology of this model is reexamined in the light of recent hints for non-zero $θ_{13}$.
We present a global analysis of all the available solar neutrino data treating consistently the 8B and hep neutrino fluxes as free parameters. The analysis reveals at 99.7% C.L. eight currently-allowed discrete regions in two-neutrino oscillation space, five regions corresponding to active neutrinos and three corresponding to sterile neutrinos. Most of the allowed solutions are robust with respect to changes in the analysis procedure, but the traditional vacuum solution is fragile. The globally-permitted range of the 8B neutrino flux, 0.45 to 1.95 in units of the BP2000 flux, is comparable to …
We study the consequences of assuming that the mass scale $Δ_{odot}$ corresponding to the solar neutrino oscillations and mixing angle $U_{e3}$ corresponding to the electron neutrino oscillation at CHOOZ are radiatively generated through the standard electroweak gauge interactions. All the leptonic mass matrices having zero $Δ_{odot}$ and $U_{e3}$ at a high scale lead to a unique low energy value for the $Δ_{odot}$ which is determined by the (known) size of the radiative corrections, solar and the atmospheric mixing angle and the Majorana mass of the neutrino observed in neutrinoless double be…
The generic predictions of two-texture zero neutrino mass matrices of class A in the flavor basis have been reexamined especially in relation to the degeneracy between mass matrices of types A_1 and A_2 and interesting constraints on the neutrino parameters have been obtained. It is shown that the octant of $θ_{23}$ and the quadrant of the Dirac-type CP-violating phase $δ$ can be used to lift this degeneracy.
In the quark sector, Jarlskog rephasing invariant parameter $J_{CP}$ has important implications for the CP violation as well as phase structure of the quark mass matrices. In fact all CP violating effects in this sector are proportional to the magnitude of the imaginary part of $J_{CP}$ . With the observation of non-zero and large "reactor mixing angle", it is widely believed that CP might be violated in the leptonic sector. In this context, we have examined in detail the relationship of CP odd invariants for texture specific mass matrices. In particular, we have calculated the predicted range…
In the context of Fritzsch-like texture 4 zero Hermitian quark mass matrices, we have attempted to find an `exact' formula for sin2βwherein the dependence of βon the quark masses and the elements of the quark mass matrices is visible in a simple and clear manner. This has been achieved keeping in mind the strong hierarchy of the quark masses and assuming the weak hierarchy amongst the elements of the mass matrices. This `exact' formula represents a vast improvement over the leading order formula based on strong hierarchy of the elements of the mass matrices. Apart from showing the compatibilit…
A widely adopted theoretical scheme to account for the neutrino oscillation phenomena is the see-saw mechanism together with the ``lopsided'' mass matrices, which is generally realized in the framework of supersymmetric grand unification. We will show that this scheme leads to large lepton flavor violation at low energy if supersymmetry is broken at the GUT or Plank scale. Especially, the branching ratio of $μ\to eγ$ already exceeds the present experimental limit. We then propose a phenomenological model, which can account for the LMA solution to the solar neutrino problem and at the same time…
Considering Dirac neutrinos and Fritzsch-like texture 6 zero and 5 zero mass matrices, detailed predictions for cases pertaining to normal/inverted hierarchy as well as degenerate scenario of neutrino masses have been carried out. All the cases considered here pertaining to inverted hierarchy and degenerate scenario of neutrino masses are ruled out by the existing data. For the normal hierarchy cases, the lower limit of m_nu_1 and of s_13 as well as the range of Dirac-like CP violating phase delta_l would have implications for the texture specific cases considered here.
Using seesaw mechanism and Fritzsch-like texture 6 zero and 5 zero lepton Dirac mass matrices, detailed predictions for cases pertaining to normal/inverted hierarchy as well as degenerate scenario of neutrino masses have been carried out. All the cases considered here pertaining to inverted hierarchy and degenerate scenario of neutrino masses are ruled out by the existing data. For the normal hierarchy cases, the lower limit of m_{ν1} and of s_{13} as well as the range of Dirac-like CP violating phase δwould have implications for the texture 6 zero and texture 5 zero cases considered here.
We study the origin of neutrino masses and mixing angles which can accomodate the LMA MSW solutions of the solar neutrino anomaly as well as the solution of the atmospheric neutrino problem, within the framework of the see-saw mechanism. We employ the diagonal form of the Dirac neutrino mass matrices with the physical masses as diagonal elements in the hierarchical order. Such choice has been motivated from the fact that the known CKM angles for the quark sector, are relatively small. We consider both possibilities where the Dirac neutrino mass matrix is either the charged lepton or the up-qua…
We show that a degenerate neutrino mass spectrum can be realized in the neutrino mass anarchy hypothesis, if the neutrino Yukawa and right-handed neutrino mass matrices are given by the Wishart matrix, i.e. products of $N \times 3$ rectangular random matrices, whose eigenvalue distribution tends to degenerate for large $N$. The mixing angle and CP phase distributions are determined by either the Haar measure of U(3) or that of SO(3). We study how large $N$ is allowed to be without tension with the observed neutrino mass squared differences, and find that the predicted value of $m_{ee}$ can be …
In the minimal SU(3)_LxU(1)_N gauge model with a global L_e-L_mu-L_tau (=L') symmetry and a discrete Z_4 symmetry, it is found that the interplay between neutrinos and charged leptons contained in triplets of ψ^i=(ν^i_L, \ell^i_L, \ell^{ci}_L) (i=1,2,3) naturally leads to the large mixing angle (LMA) MSW solution. The model includes two (anti)sextet Higgs scalars, S^(0) with L'=0 and S^(+) with L'=2, which, respectively, couple to ψ^1ψ^{2,3} for the electron mass and masses of atmospheric neutrinos and to ψ^{2,3}ψ^{2,3} for the μ- and τ-masses and one-loop radiative neutrino masses relevant to…
By using a model independent Monte Carlo approach, we study the possible structure of charged and neutral lepton mass matrices, under the assumption of an U(2) horizontal symmetry (additional to the usual Standard Model ones) involving the light fermion generations. We assume the most general Majorana mass matrix for neutrinos. We update the results of our previous similar study, by inserting in the analysis the recent KamLAND data, that contributed to find a final solution to the Solar neutrino problem. The introduction of the new experimental data reduce the allowed regions in the nine dimen…
An SO(10) grand unified model considered previously by the authors featuring lopsided down quark and charged lepton mass matrices is successfully predictive and requires that the lightest two right-handed Majorana neutrinons be nearly degenerate in order to obtain the LMA solar neutrino solution. Here we use this model to test its predictions for baryogenesis through resonant-enhanced leptogenesis. With the conventional type I seesaw mechanism, the best predictions for baryogenesis appear to fall a factor of three short of the observed value. However, with a proposed type III seesaw mechanism …
The present work attempts to provide an overview of texture specific lepton mass matrices. In particular, we summarize the findings of some recent analyses carried out within non flavor basis, wherein a parallel texture structure for the lepton and neutrino mass matrices is considered.
We perform model independent and model dependent analyses of solar neutrino data including the neutral current event rate from SNO. The inclusion of the first SNO NC data in the model independent analysis determines the allowed ranges of $^{8}{B}$ flux normalisation and the $ν_e$ survival probability more precisely than what was possible from the SK and SNO CC combination. We perform global $ν_e-ν_{active}$ oscillation analyses of solar neutrino data using the NC rate instead of the SSM prediction for the $^{8}{B}$ flux, in view of the large uncertainty in the latter. The LMA gives the best so…
We analyse the parallel hybrid texture structures in the charged lepton and the neutrino sector. These parallel hybrid texture structures have physical implications as they cannot be obtained from arbitrary lepton mass matrices through weak basis transformations. The total sixty parallel hybrid texture structures can be grouped into twelve classes, and all the hybrid textures in the same class have identical physical implications. We examine all the twelve classes under the assumption of non-factorizable phases in the neutrino mass matrix. Five out of the total twelve classes are found to be p…
In the light of the recent measurement of the leptonic mixing angle $θ_{13}$, implications of the latest mixing data have been investigated for non-minimal textures of lepton mass matrices pertaining to Dirac neutrinos. All these texture specific lepton mass matrices have been examined for their compatibility with the latest data in the cases of normal hierarchy, inverted hierarchy and degenerate scenario of neutrino masses. The implications of all the three lepton mixing angles have been investigated on the lightest neutrino mass as well as the Jarlskog's CP violating parameter in the leptoni…
We study the implications of the existence of two equalities between the elements or cofactors of the neutrino mass matrix. There are sixty five structures of this type for each case. Phenomenological implications for unknown parameters like the effective Majorana mass of the electron neutrino and CP-violating phases are examined for the viable cases. To illustrate how such forms of the neutrino mass matrices may be realized, we also present a simple $A_4$ model for one of the classes in each case.
We study the phenomenological consequences of recent results from atmospheric and accelerator neutrino experiments, favoring normal neutrino mass ordering $m_1 < m_2 < m_3$, a near maximal lepton Dirac CP phase $δ_{l}\sim 270^\circ$ along with $θ_{23}\gtrsim 45^\circ$, for possible realization of natural structure in the lepton mass matrices characterized by ${({M_{ij}})} \sim O(\sqrt {{m_i}{m_j}}) $ for $i,j=1,2,3$. It is observed that deviations from parallel texture structures for $M_{l}$ and $M_ν$ are essential for realizing such structures. In particular, such hierarchical neutrino mass m…
We demonstrate that an $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ model with the same particle content as Standard Model(SM) and discrete reflection symmetry between second and third generation of leptons give rise to charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices which can accommodate the present solar, atmospheric, WMAP neutrino experimental results. The model predicts the value of $|U_{13}|$ which could be tested in neutrino factories and the value of the effectiv Majorana neutrino mass $<m_{ee}>$ comes out at the lower end of the present experimental limit. Neutrino masses are generated through dim = 5 operators an…
We perform a detailed study of the Earth matter effects on supernova neutrinos with neutrino oscillation parameter LMA and small $θ_{13}$. The Earth effects show significant dependences on the neutrino path length inside the Earth and the value of $Δm^{2}_{12}$. We investigate rather optimistically a possibility that we can probe the value of $Δm^{2}_{12}$ by the Earth effects. We assume that $θ_{12}$ and the direction of the supernova are known with enough accuracy and that the resonance that occurs at higher density in supernova envelope is completely nonadiabatic. Further the neutrino spect…
We study the implications of the simultaneous existence of a texture zero and a vanishing minor in the neutrino mass matrix. There are thirty six possible texture structures of this type, twenty one of which reduce to two texture zero cases which have, already, been extensively studied. Of the remaining fifteen textures only six are allowed by the current data. We examine the phenomenological implications of the allowed texture structures for Majorana type CP-violating phases, 1-3 mixing angle and Dirac type CP-violating phase. All these possible textures can be generated through the seesaw me…
In view of the precise measurement of the leptonic mixing angle θ_{13}, implications of the latest mixing data have been investigated for lepton mass matrices pertaining to Dirac neutrinos. These texture specific lepton mass matrices have been examined for their compatibility with the latest data in the cases of normal hierarchy, inverted hierarchy and degenerate scenario of neutrino masses.
We have constructed a SUSY SO(10) x SU(2)_F model in which a set of symmetric mass matrices with five texture zeros (having 11 parameters) leads to 22 measurable fermion masses, mixing angles and CP phases, all in agreement with available experimental data within one sigma. The LMA solution for solar neutrinos is obtained as well as neutrino mixing angles and absolute values of neutrino masses. We have investigated the possibility of baryogenesis resulting from soft leptogenesis. We find that, with soft SUSY masses assuming their natural values of the order of a TeV, the observed baryon asymme…
A minimal SO(10) Higgs structure involving a single adjoint field along with spinors, vectors and singlets has been shown to break the SO(10) gauge symmetry to the standard model while stabilizing the F-flat directions and solving the doublet-triplet splitting problem naturally. With this minimal set of Higgs fields, we show how to construct quark and lepton mass matrices which explain well the many features of the observed spectrum, including the Georgi-Jarlskog mass relations. A large mixing of the muon- and tau-neutrinos results naturally as observed in the atmospheric neutrino data. A part…
An effective texture is presented for six Majorana conventional neutrinos (three active and three sterile), based on a 6x6 neutrino mixing matrix whose 3x3 active-active component arises from the popular bimaximal mixing matrix of active neutrinos $ν_e$, $ν_μ$, $ν_τ$ by three small rotations in the 14, 25, 36 planes of $ν_1$, $ν_2$, $ν_3$ and $ν_4$, $ν_5$, $ν_6$ neutrino mass states. The Dirac component (i.e. 3x3 active-sterile component) of the resulting 6x6 neutrino mass matrix is conjectured to get a structure similar to the charged lepton and quark 3x3 mass matrices, after the bimaximal mi…
I discuss the implications of neutrino oscillations for neutrino mass patterns and mass matrices, and for neutrinoless double beta decay. I then go on to discuss the implications for cosmological relic density and dark matter, the galaxy structure limits on neutrino mass, nucleosynthesis, supernovae, cosmic rays and gamma ray bursts.
We investigate the implications of the SNO charged-current (CC) and electron scattering (ES) measurements of solar \br neutrino fluxes for neutrino mass and mixing parameters by performing a global and unified $χ^2$ analysis of the solar neutrino data in the framework of two neutrino mixing. We consider both $ν_e -ν_{active}$ and $ν_e -ν_{sterile}$ solutions and perform (i) analysis of the total rates data of Cl, Ga, SK and SNO experiments and (ii) global analysis including the total rates data, the recoil electron spectrum data of SK and the CC spectrum observed at SNO. For the $ν_e-ν_{active…
We construct the $CP$-odd weak basis invariants in the flavor basis for all the phenomenologically viable neutrino mass matrices with a texture zero and a vanishing minor and, also, find the necessary and sufficient conditions for $CP$ invariance . We examine the interrelationships between different $CP$-odd weak basis invariants for these texture structures and investigate their implications for Dirac- and Majorana-type $CP$ violation.
Out of the fifteen 3 x 3 neutrino mass matrices with two texture zeros seven are compatible with the neutrino oscillation data. While 2 of them correspond to hierarchical neutrino masses and 1 to an inverted hierarchy, the remaining 4 correspond to degenerate masses. Moreover only the first 3 of the 7 mass matrices are compatible with the maximal mixing angle of atmospheric neutrino and hence favoured by data. We give compact expressions for mass matrices in terms of mass eigenvalues and study phenomenological implications for the 7 cases. Similarity of the textures of the neutrino, charged-le…
An attempt has been made to carry out a detailed analysis of quark mass matrices having structure beyond the minimal texture. In particular, keeping in mind, precision measurements of CKM parameters as well as refinements in the ranges of light quark masses, we have examined the viability of all possible combinations of hermitian texture 5 zero quark mass matrices. Interestingly, one finds that all these possibilities are now excluded by the present quark mixing data, thereby, having important implications for model building.
Taking into account the latest neutrino oscillation data, we study texture zeros of the lepton mass matrices. Assuming the Dirac neutrino mass matrix M_D, the charged-lepton mass matrix M_l and the mass matrix of heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos M_R to have three texture zeros, we show that the observed neutrino mixing angles can naturally be obtained. The phenomenological implications for the neutrino mass spectrum, the CP-violating phases, the tritium beta decay and the neutrinoless double-beta decay are explored.
Lopsided structure in mass matrices of down quarks and leptons gives a simple explanation for the observed large angles of neutrino mixings. We realize such mass matrices by the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism in the framework of supersymmetric SO(10) grand unified theory (GUT). It is shown that the model can reproduce the successful mass matrices which have been obtained in SU(5) models. Cosmological implication of the model is also discussed. We show that the hybrid inflation occurs naturally in the model and it offers non-thermal leptogenesis by decays of the next-to-lightest right-handed neutri…
A comprehensive review of several aspects of fermion mixing phenomenon and texture specific mass matrices have been presented. Regarding fermion mixings, implications of unitarity and certain new developments for the CKM paradigm have been discussed. In the leptonic sector, the question of possibility of CP violation has been discussed in detail from the unitarity triangle perspective. In the case of texture specific mass matrices, the issues of viability of Fritzsch-like as well as non Fritzsch-like mass matrices have been detailed for both the quark and leptonic sectors. The relationship of …
In an attempt to find minimal scenarios we study the implications of Dirac and Majorana mass matrices with texture zeros within the type I seesaw mechanism. For the Dirac mass matrices we consider 5 zero textures which we show to be the most minimal form that can successfully account for low energy phenomenology if the Majorana mass matrices are chosen minimal as well. For those, we consider both diagonal and even more minimal non-diagonal forms. The latter can be motivated e.g. by simple U(1) flavour symmetries and have two degenerate eigenvalues. We classify the allowed textures and discuss …
We classify the textures of the Dirac and the right-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrices, $M_D$ and $M_R$, which can satisfy the so-called ``Strong Scaling Ansatz'' (SSA) within the framework of the seesaw mechanism $M_ν=-M_D^T M_R^{-1} M_D$. We assume that the Dirac neutrino mass matrix has some texture zeros and examine which elements should be zero in order to satisfy the SSA, by taking into account all possible textures for $M_R$. We find that the resulting Dirac neutrino mass matrices have rank 2 as well as the rank of the effective neutrino mass matrix $M_ν$, or rank 1, depending only …
We attempt the integration of the phenomenologically successful four zero texture of fermion mass matrices with the renormalizable SO(10) GUT. The resulting scenario is found to be highly predictive. Firstly, we examine the phenomenological implications of a class of the lepton mass matrices with parallel texture structures and obtain interesting constraints on the parameters of the charged lepton and the neutrino mass matrices. We combine these phenomenological constraints with the constraints obtained from SO(10) GUT to reduce the number of the free parameters and to further constrain the al…
