We present the results of our QCD analysis for non-singlet unpolarized quark distributions and structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$ up to N$^3$LO. In this regards 4-loop anomalous dimension can be obtain from the Padé approximations. The analysis is based on the Jacobi polynomials expansion of the structure function. New parameterizations are derived for the non-singlet quark distributions for the kinematic wide range of $x$ and $Q^2$. Our calculations for non-singlet unpolarized quark distribution functions up to N$^3$LO are in good agreement with available theoretical models. The higher twist contributions of $F_2^{p,d}(x,Q^2)$ are extracted in the large $x$ region in N$^3$LO analysis. The values of $Λ_{QCD}$ and $α_s(M_z^2)$ are determined.
The twist three contributions to the $Q^2$-evolution of the spin-dependent structure function $g_2(x_{Bj},Q^2)$ are considered in the non-local operator product approach. Defining appropriate twist three distribution function we derive their evolution equation for the nonsinglet case in leading order approximation. In the limit $x_{Bj} \rightarrow 1$ as well as in the large $N_c$ limit we confirm the result that the evolution of the nonsinglet part of $g_2$ is governed by a Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi equation.
The method of truncated Mellin moments in a solving QCD evolution equations of the nonsinglet structure functions $F_2^{NS}(x,Q^2)$ and $g_1^{NS}(x,Q^2)$ is presented. All calculations are performed within double logarithmic $ln^2x$ approximation. An equation for truncated moments which incorporates $ln^2x$ effects is formulated and solved for the unintegrated structure function $f^{NS}(x,Q^2)$. The contribution to the Bjorken sum rule coming from the region of very small $x$ is quantified. Further possible improvement of this approach is also discussed.
We provide a determination of the isotriplet quark distribution from available deep--inelastic data using neural networks. We give a general introduction to the neural network approach to parton distributions, which provides a solution to the problem of constructing a faithful and unbiased probability distribution of parton densities based on available experimental information. We discuss in detail the techniques which are necessary in order to construct a Monte Carlo representation of the data, to construct and evolve neural parton distributions, and to train them in such a way that the corre…
We revise the relation between Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) and matrix elements computable from lattice QCD, focusing on the quasi-Parton Distribution Functions (qPDFs) approach. We exploit the relation between PDFs and qPDFs in the case of the unpolarized isovector parton distribution to obtain a factorization formula relating the real and imaginary part of qPDFs matrix elements to specific nonsinglet distributions, and we propose a general framework to extract PDFs from the available lattice data, treating them on the same footing as experimental data. We implement the proposed appro…
Using the approach based on conformal symmetry we calculate the three-loop (NNLO) contribution to the evolution equation for flavor-nonsinglet leading twist operators in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme. The explicit expression for the three-loop kernel is derived for the corresponding light-ray operator in coordinate space. The expansion in local operators is performed and explicit results are given for the matrix of the anomalous dimensions for the operators up to seven covariant derivatives. The results are directly applicable to the renormalization of the pion light-cone distribution ampl…
The extension of the method [arXiv:hep-ph/0503109] for solving the leading order evolution equation for Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) is presented. We obtain the solution of the evolution equation both for the flavor nonsinglet quark GPD and singlet quark and gluon GPDs. The properties of the solution and, in particular, the asymptotic form of GPDs in the small x and ξregion are discussed.
We give a status report on the determination of a set of parton distributions based on neural networks. In particular, we summarize the determination of the nonsinglet quark distribution up to NNLO, we compare it with results obtained using other approaches, and we discuss its use for a determination of $α_s$.
Recent developments showed that light cone parton distributions can be studied by investigating the large momentum limit of the so-called quasiparton distributions, which are defined in terms of spacelike correlators, and therefore can be readily computed on the lattice. These two distributions can be connected to each other by a perturbative factorization formula or matching condition that allows one to convert the latter into the former. Here we present the one-loop matching condition for the transversity generalized quark distribution in the nonsinglet case
We introduce the neural network approach to the parametrization of parton distributions. After a general introduction, we present in detail our approach to parametrize experimental data, based on a combination of Monte Carlo methods and neural networks. We apply this strategy first in three different cases: the proton structure function, hadronic tau decays and B meson decay spectra. Finally we describe the neural network approach applied to the parametrization of parton distribution functions, and present results on the nonsinglet parton distribution.
We will show an application of neural networks to extract information on the structure of hadrons. A Monte Carlo over experimental data is performed to correctly reproduce data errors and correlations. A neural network is then trained on each Monte Carlo replica via a genetic algorithm. Results on the proton and deuteron structure functions, and on the nonsinglet parton distribution will be shown.
We present an analysis of twist-2, leading order QCD amplitudes for hard exclusive leptoproduction of mesons in terms of double/nonforward parton distribution functions. After reviewing some general features of nonforward nucleon matrix elements of twist-2 QCD string operators, we propose a phenomenological model for quark and gluon nonforward distribution functions. The corresponding QCD evolution equations are solved in the leading logarithmic approximation for flavor nonsinglet distributions. We derive explicit expressions for hard exclusive pi^0, eta, and neutral vector meson production am…
We apply the Meson Cloud Model to the calculation of nonsinglet parton distributions in the nucleon sea, including the octet and the decuplet cloud baryon contributions. We give special attention to the differences between nonstrange and strange sea quarks, trying to identify possible sources of SU(3) flavor breaking. A analysis in terms of the $κ$ parameter is presented, and we find that the existing SU(3) flavor asymmetry in the nucleon sea can be quantitatively explained by the meson cloud. We also consider the $Σ^+$ baryon, finding similar conclusions.
Analytical solutions for the non-singlet polarized parton distribution are obtained by solving the DGLAP equation by two analytical methods: Lagranges Method and Method of Characteristics. The relative merits of the two methods are discussed while comparing with HERMES data in the small x region. We also calculate the partial spin fractions carried by small x, nonsinglet partons.
A new type of parametrization for parton distribution functions in a proton, based on their $Q^2$-evolution at large and small $x$ values, is constructed. In our analysis, the valence and nonsinglet parts obey the Gross-Llewellyn-Smith and Gottfried sum rules, respectively. For the singlet quark and gluon densities momentum conservation is taken into account. Then, using the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin prescription, we extend the consideration to Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD, or unintegrated) gluon and quark distributions in a proton, which currently plays an important role in a number of pheno…
We derive the LO DGLAP evolution equation for the full Mellin moments of the truncated at $x_0$ first moment of the nonsinglet parton distribution. This "moment of moment" approach allows to determine the small-$x_0$ behaviour of the truncated first moment. We compare our predictions to results obtained from $x-$space solutions for parton distributions with use of the Chebyshev polynomial method and to solutions of the evolution equations for the truncated moments proposed by other authors. The comparison is performed for different input parametrisations for $10^{-5}\leq x_0\leq 0.1$ and $1\le…
We discuss nonperturbative QCD evolution of nonsinglet nucleon structure functions, with particular application to the Gottfried sum. We show that the coupling of the quark partons to bound state mesons leads to nonperturbative contributions to the Altarelli--Parisi equations which, due to the axial anomaly, result in a strong scale dependence of nonsinglet structure functions for values of $Q^2$ around the nucleon mass scale. We compute specifically the evolution of the first moment of the quark distribution, and find that it is sufficient to explain recent experimental data which indicate a …
We extract two nonsinglet nucleon Parton Distribution Functions from lattice QCD data for reduced Ioffe-time pseudodistributions. We perform such analysis within the NNPDF framework, considering data coming from different lattice ensembles and discussing in detail the treatment of the different source of systematics involved in the fit. We introduce a recipe for taking care of systematics and use it to perform our extraction of light-cone PDFs.
We extract the x dependence of the nonsinglet u-d distribution function in the nucleon from the lowest few moments calculated on the lattice, using an extrapolation formula which ensures the correct behavior in the chiral and heavy quark limits. We discuss the implications for the quark mass dependence of meson masses lying on the J(PC)=1(--) Regge trajectory.
A simple, new method for solving for the $Q^2$ evolution of parton distributions in perturbative QCD using cubic splines is described and applied to the evolution of nonsinglet quark distributions.
Based on the world DIS data we extract the experimental F_2^p-F_2^n as a function of Bjorken-x and photon virtuality Q^2, using two different methods. Both methods lead to identical results. We find that the standard PDFs fail to describe the experimental data below Q^2 < 7 GeV^2, which is much higher than for F_2^p and F_2^d separately. The difference between PDFs and the experimental data cannot be understood as due to nuclear effects in the deuteron, and evidently suggests substantial nonsinglet higher-twist effects. The trend of the experimental data is approximately explained by a recent …
We investigate the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) order contributions of the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) for exclusive processes evaluated by Monte Carlo methods. Ambiguities of the Monte Carlo calculation based on the leading-logarithmic (LL) order approximations are pointed out. To remove these ambiguities, we take into account the NLL order terms. In a model presented in this paper, interference contributions due to the NLL order terms are included for the generation of the transverse momenta in initial-state parton radiations. Furthermore, a kinematical constraint due to parton radiati…
We perform an extensive study of the scale dependence of flavor-singlet contributions to the structure function g_2(x,Q^2) in polarized deep-inelastic scattering. We find that the mixing between quark-antiquark-gluon and three-gluon twist-3 operators only involves the three-gluon operator with the lowest anomalous dimension and is weak in other cases. This means, effectively, that only those three-gluon operators with the lowest anomalous dimension for each moment are important, and allows to formulate a simple two-component parton-like description of g_2(x,Q^2) in analogy with the conventiona…

We solve the LO DGLAP QCD evolution equation for truncated Mellin moments of the nucleon nonsinglet structure function. The results are compared with those, obtained in the Chebyshev-polynomial approach for $x$-space solutions. Computations are performed for a wide range of the truncation point $10^{-5}\leq x_0\leq 0.9$ and $1\leq Q^2\leq 100 {\rm GeV}^2$. The agreement is perfect for higher moments ($n\geq 2$) and not too large $x_0$ ($x_0\leq 0.1$), even for a small number of terms in the truncated series (M=4). The accuracy of the truncated moments method increases for larger $M$ and decrea…
Following a previous study of the one-loop factorization of the nonsinglet $g_2$ structure function of the nucleon, we present in this paper the next-to-leading order coefficient functions in the singlet sector. To obtain the result, the partonic processes of virtual Compton scattering off two and three "on-shell" gluons are calculated. A key step in achieving the correct factorization is to separate the correct twist-two contribution. The Burkardt-Cottingham sum rule is nominally satisfied at this order.
We present the determination of a set of parton distributions of the nucleon, at next-to-leading order, from a global set of deep-inelastic scattering data: NNPDF1.0. The determination is based on a Monte Carlo approach, with neural networks used as unbiased interpolants. This method, previously discussed by us and applied to a determination of the nonsinglet quark distribution, is designed to provide a faithful and statistically sound representation of the uncertainty on parton distributions. We discuss our dataset, its statistical features, and its Monte Carlo representation. We summarize th…
Using the approach based on conformal symmetry we calculate the two-loop coefficient function for the vector flavor-nonsinglet contribution to deeply-virtual Compton scattering (DVCS). The analytic expression for the coefficient function in momentum fraction space is presented in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme. The corresponding next-to-next-to-leading order correction to the Compton form factor $\mathcal{H}$ for a simple model of the generalized parton distribution appears to be rather large: a factor two smaller than the next-to-leading order correction, approximately $\sim 10$\% of the t…
The dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry in QCD is caused by nonperturbative interactions on a scale rho ~ 0.3 fm, much smaller than the hadronic size R ~ 1 fm. These short-distance interactions influence the intrinsic transverse momentum distributions of partons and their correlations at a low normalization point. We study this phenomenon in an effective description of low-energy dynamics based on chiral constituent quark degrees of freedom, which refers to the large-N_c limit of QCD. The nucleon is obtained as a system of constituent quarks and antiquarks moving in a self-consistent classic…
We calculate the one-loop twist-3 gluon contribution to the flavor-singlet structure function g_2(x,Q^2) in polarized deep-inelastic scattering and find that it is dominated by the contribution of the three-gluon operator with the lowest anomalous dimension (for each moment N). The similar property was observed earlier for the nonsinglet distributions, although the reason is in our case different. The result is encouraging and suggests a simple evolution pattern of g_2(x,Q^2) in analogy with the conventional description of twist-2 parton distributions.
We study the flavor structure of the nucleon's chiral-odd generalized parton distributions (transversity GPDs) in the large-N_c limit of QCD. It is found that in the distributions H_T and E_T-tilde the flavor-nonsinglet component u - d is leading in the 1/N_c expansion, while in E_T and H_T-tilde it is the flavor-singlet component u + d. This pattern is consistent with the flavor structure extracted from hard exclusive pi^0 and eta electroproduction data, assuming that the processes are dominated by the twist-3 mechanism involving the chiral-odd pseudoscalar meson distribution amplitudes.
We report the parton distribution functions (PDFs) determined from the NNLO QCD analysis of the world inclusive DIS data with account of the precise NNLO QCD corrections to the evolution equations kernel. The value of strong coupling constant α_s^{NNLO}(M_Z)=0.1141(14), in fair agreement with one obtained using the earlier approximate NNLO kernel by van Neerven-Vogt. The intermediate bosons rates calculated in the NNLO using obtained PDFs are in agreement to the latest Run II results.
We review recent developments in the theory and phenomenology of polarized structure functions. We summarize recent experimental data on the proton and deuteron structure function $g_1$, and their impact on the understanding of polarized sum rules. Specifically, we discuss how accurate measurements of the singlet and nonsinglet first moment of $g_1$ test perturbative and nonperturbative QCD, and critically examine the way these measurements are arrived at. We then discuss how the extraction of structure functions from the data can be improved by means of a theoretical analysis of their $x$ and…
We use all the available new precise data for deep inelastic and related hard scattering processes to perform NLO global parton analyses. These new data allow an improved determination of partons and, in particular, the inclusion of the recent measurements of the structure functions at HERA and of the inclusive jets at the Tevatron help to determine the gluon distribution and alpha_S better than ever before. We find a somewhat smaller gluon at low x than previous determinations and that alpha_S(M_Z^2) = 0.119 +/- 0.002 (expt.) +/- 0.003 (theory).
We study an influence of precise data on uncertainty of polarized parton distribution functions. This analysis includes the SLAC-E155 proton target data which are precise measurements. Polarized PDF uncertainties are estimated by using the Hessian matrix. We examine correlation effect between the antiquark and gluon uncertainties. It suggests that reducing the gluon uncertainty is needed to determine the polarized antiquark distribution clearly.
The collinear factorization theorem, combined with finite-order calculations in perturbative QCD, provides a powerful framework to obtain predictions for many collider observables. However, for observables which involve multiple energy scales, transverse degrees of freedom cannot be neglected, and finite-order perturbative calculations have to be combined with resummed calculations to all orders in the QCD running coupling in order to obtain reliable theoretical predictions, capable of describing experimental measurements. This is traditionally done either by analytic resummation methods or by…
We reanalyze the experimental NMC data on the nonsinglet structure function $F_2^p-F_2^n$ and E866 data on the nucleon sea asymmetry $\bar{d}/\bar{u}$ using the truncated moments approach elaborated in our previous papers. With help of the special truncated sum one can overcome the problem of the unavoidable experimental restrictions on the Bjorken $x$ and effectively study the fundamental sum rules for the parton distributions and structure functions. Using only the data from the measured region of $x$, we obtain the Gottfried sum $\int_0^1 F_2^{ns}/x\, dx$ and the integrated nucleon sea asym…
We present the resolution of a long-standing discrepancy between the moments of parton distributions calculated from lattice QCD and their experimental values. We propose a simple extrapolation formula for the moments of the nonsinglet quark distribution u-d, as a function of quark mass, which embodies the general constraints imposed by the chiral symmetry of QCD. The inclusion of the leading nonanalytic behavior leads to an excellent description of both the lattice data and the experimental values of the moments.
Precise determinations of the strong coupling constant in hadronic collisions demand sets of parton densities spanning a sufficiently wide range of values for the QCD scale parameter Lambda. For such applications, we supplement the recent GRV parametrization by five sets of dynamically generated parton distributions for Lambda-values corresponding to alpha_{S}(M_{Z}^{2}) between 0.104 and 0.122. Present DIS data, including recent small-x HERA results, do not appreciably discriminate between these sets.
A nonsinglet QCD analysis of neutrino-nucleon structure function is performed based on all the data for charged current neutrino-nucleon deep inelastic scattering (DIS) corresponds to NLO and NNLO approximations, with taking into account the nuclear and higher twist corrections. In this analysis, we extract $xu_v(x,Q^2)$ and $xd_v(x,Q^2)$ valence parton distribution functions (PDFs) in a wide range of $x$ and $Q^2$, and determine their parametrization with the correlated errors using the xFitter framework. Our results regarding valence-quark densities with their uncertainties are compared to t…
We outline the basic properties of a pertubative QCD factorization formalism that maintains exact over-all kinematics in both the initial and final states. Such a treatment requires the use of non-perturbative factors that depend on all components of parton four-momentum. These objects are referred to as parton correlation functions. We describe the complications faced in defining parton correlation functions and discuss recent progress. Emphasis is placed on the need for precise operator definitions in a complete derivation of factorization.
We study the effect of absorptive corrections due to parton recombination on the parton distributions of the proton. A more precise version of the GLRMQ equations, which account for non-linear corrections to DGLAP evolution, is derived. An analysis of HERA F_2 data shows that the small-x gluon distribution is enhanced at low scales when the absorptive effects are included, such that a negative gluon distribution at 1 GeV is no longer required.
We use the Bessel-inspired behavior of the structure function F2 at small x, obtained for a flat initial condition in the DGLAP evolution equations, with "frozen" and analytic modifications of the strong coupling constant to study precise combined H1 and ZEUS data for the structure function F2 published recently.
We show how parton distributions unintegrated over the parton transverse momentum, k_t, may be generated, at NLO accuracy, from the known integrated (DGLAP-evolved) parton densities determined from global data analyses. A few numerical examples are given, which demonstrate that sufficient accuracy is obtained by keeping only the LO splitting functions together with the NLO integrated parton densities. However, it is important to keep the precise kinematics of the process, by taking the scale to be the virtuality rather than the transverse momentum, in order to be consistent with the calculatio…
We discuss the parton branching (PB) evolution equation for transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs), especially we concentrate on the angular ordering constrain and its effect on the TMD distributions. We discuss application of the PB TMDs to precise prediction of Drell-Yan transverse momentum spectrum at LHC, stressing the role of angular ordering in the low transverse momentum region. We compare the PB implementation of the angular ordering condition with the Kimber-Martin-Ryskin-Watt (KMRW), both at the analytical and numerical level.
The determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) is crucial for a complete understanding of the protons and neutrons that make most of the visible matter in the universe. Years of dedicated studies have yielded a quite precise knowledge of the behavior of partons moving collinearly within a proton. However Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) experiments off nuclei have shown a non-trivial difference with respect to DIS in protons, hinting that the partons in a nuclear medium do not behave the same way as in a free proton. In this work we will discuss the latest results in nuclear part…
I give an account of the definitions of parton densities, both the conventional ones, integrated over parton transverse momentum, and unintegrated transverse-momentum-dependent densities. The aim is to get a precise and correct definition of a parton density as the target expectation value of a suitable quantum mechanical operator, so that a clear connection to non-perturbative QCD is provided. Starting from the intuitive ideas in the parton model that predate QCD, we will see how the simplest operator definitions suffer from divergences. Corrections to the definition are needed to eliminate t…
An explicit evaluation of the two pion transverse momentum dependent parton distributions at leading twist is presented, in the framework of the Nambu-Jona Lasinio model with Pauli-Villars regularization. The transverse momentum dependence of the obtained distributions is generated solely by the dynamics of the model. Using these results, the so called generalized Boer-Mulders shift is studied and compared with recent lattice data. The obtained agreement is very encouraging, in particular because no additional parameter has been introduced. A more conclusive comparison would require a precise …
I consider the uncertainties in parton distributions and the consequences for hadronic cross-sections. There is ever-increasing sophistication in the relationship between the uncertainties of the distributions and the errors on the experimental data used to extract them. However, I demonstrate that this uncertainty is frequently subsumed by that due to the choice of data used in fits, and more surprisingly by the precise details of the theoretical framework used. Variations in heavy flavour prescriptions provide striking examples.
We analyze the energy scale dependence of fragmentation functions from $e^+$-$e^-$ collisions using conventional momentum measures $x_p$ and $ξ_p$ and rapidity $y$. We find that replotting fragmentation functions on a normalized rapidity variable results in a compact form precisely represented by the beta distribution, its two parameters varying slowly and simply with parton energy scale $Q$. The resulting parameterization enables extrapolation of fragmentation functions to low $Q$ in order to describe fragment distributions at low transverse momentum $p_t$ in heavy ion collisions at RHIC.
A new approach to determine the LHC luminosity is investigated. Instead of employing the proton-proton luminosity measurement, we suggest to measure directly the parton-parton luminosity. It is shown that the electron and muon pseudorapidity distributions, originating from the decay of W+, W- and Z0 bosons produced at 14 TeV pp collisions (LHC), constrain the x distributions of sea and valence quarks and antiquarks in the range from about 3 x 10**-4 to about 10**-1 at a Q**2 of about 10**4 GeV**2. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that, once the quark and antiquark structure functions are constr…
Parton showers are widely used to generate fully exclusive final states needed to compare theoretical models to experimental observations. While, in general, parton showers give a good description of the experimental data, the precise functional form of the probability distribution underlying the event generation is generally not known. The reason is that realistic parton showers are required to conserve four-momentum at each vertex. In this paper we investigate in detail how four-momentum conservation is enforced in a standard parton shower and why this destroys the analytic control of the pr…
We study parametrization of polarized parton distribution functions in the α_s leading order (LO) and in the next-to-leading order (NLO). From χ^2 fitting to the experimental data on A_1, optimum polarized distribution functions are determined. The quark spin content ΔΣis very sensitive to the small-x behavior of antiquark distributions which suggests that small-x data are needed for precise determination of ΔΣ. We propose three sets of distributions and also provide FORTRAN library for our distributions.
Detailed and precise background predictions are the backbone of large parts of high-energy collider phenomenology. This requires to embed precision QCD calculations into detailed event generators, to produce comprehensive software simulations. Only continued progress in this direction will allow us to exploit the full potential of measurements at the Large Hadron Collider, or at a future Electron-Ion Collider. This work presents a method to combine third-order QCD calculations for hadronic scattering processes with Monte-Carlo event generators, thus enabling a new generation of precision predi…
We report on a high-precision calculation of the Bhabha process in QED, of interest for precise luminosity determination of low-energy electron-positron colliders. The calculation is based on the matching of exact next-to-leading order corrections with a Parton Shower algorithm. The structure of the algorithm (implemented in an improved version of the event generator BABAYAGA) is illustrated, with a discussion on the resulting theoretical uncertainty, of the order of 0.1 %.
At the next generation of linear colliders, forward-backward asymmetries will be involved again in the precise determination of the neutral current couplings of heavy quarks in inclusive heavy-quark production. The theoretical understanding of these observables at the level of NNLO radiative corrections is required. We review a recent calculation of the two-parton contribution to the heavy-quark A_FB at NNLO QCD in e+e- collisions. The results are valid for arbitrary values of the momentum transfer and non-vanishing heavy-quark mass m_Q.
An up-to-date global QCD analysis of high energy lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron interactions is performed to better determine the gluon and quark parton distributions in the nucleon. Improved experimental data on inclusive jet production, in conjunction with precise deep inelastic scattering data, place good constraints on the gluon over a wide range of x; while new data on asymmetries in Drell-Yan processes contribute to better determine the d/u ratio. Comparisons with results of other recent global analyses are made, and the differences are described. Open issues and the general problem of …
