Current high resolution observations of galaxy clusters reveal a dynamical intracluster medium (ICM). The wealth of structures includes signatures of interactions between active galactic nuclei (AGN) and the ICM, such as cavities and shocks, as well as signatures of bulk motions, e.g. cold fronts. Aiming at understanding the physics of the ICM, we study individual clusters by both, deep high resolution observations and numerical simulations which include processes suspected to be at work, and aim at reproducing the observed properties. By comparing observations and simulations in detail, we gain deeper insights into cluster properties and processes. Here we present two examples of our approach: the large-scale shock in the Hydra A cluster, and sloshing cold fronts.
X-ray measurements suggest the abundance of Calcium in the intracluster medium is higher than can be explained using favored models for core-collapse and Type Ia supernovae alone. We investigate whether the Calcium conundrum in the intracluster medium can be alleviated by including a contribution from the recently discovered subclass of supernovae known as Calcium-rich gap transients. Although the Calcium-rich gap transients make up only a small fraction of all supernovae events, we find that their high Calcium yields are sufficient to reproduce the X-ray measurements found for nearby rich clu…
During structure formation, energetic events and random motions of the hot gas residing inside galaxy clusters (the intracluster medium, ICM) generate turbulent motions. Radio diffuse emission probes the presence of magnetic fields and relativistic particles in the ICM, being a key ingredient for understanding the physical processes at work in clusters of galaxies. In this work, we present results from numerical simulations of magnetic field turbulence in magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) and kinetic MHD (KMHD) frameworks. We characterize magnetic field structures through the imprints left on polariz…
We submit that non thermalized support for the outer intracluster medium in relaxed galaxy clusters is provided by turbulence, driven by inflows of intergalactic gas across the virial accretion shocks. We expect this component to increase briskly during the cluster development for z<1/2, due to three factors. First, the accretion rates of gas and dark matter subside, when they feed on the outer wings of the initial perturbations in the accelerating Universe. Second, the infall speeds decrease across the progressively shallower gravitational potential at the shock position. Third, the shocks ev…
Coronae exist in most astrophysical objects: stars, accretion disks, and individual galaxies and clusters of galaxies. Coronae in these varied systems have some common properties: 1) hydrostatic equilibrium in background gravity is a good assumption; 2) they are optically thin, i.e., photons escape as soon as they are born; 3) they have cooling times shorter than their ages, and thus require heating for sustenance. Generally the coronal heating mechanisms are quite complex but the structure of the corona is tightly constrained by the interplay of cooling, {\em global} heating, and background g…
I investigate an analytical model of galaxy clusters based on the assumption that the intracluster medium plasma is polytropic and is in hydrostatic equilibrium. The Einasto profile is adopted as a model for the spatial-density distribution of dark matter halos. This model has sufficient degrees of freedom to simultaneously fit X-ray surface brightness and temperature profiles, with five parameters to describe the global cluster properties and three additional parameters to describe the cluster's cool-core feature. The model is tested with Chandra X-ray data for seven galaxy clusters, includin…
We use the cosmological semi-analytic model (SAM) for galaxy formation presented in Paper I to study the metallicities and abundance ratios of the intracluster medium (ICM) within the hierarchical structure formation paradigm. By requiring a slightly flat IMF (x=1.15) and a two-population delay-time-distribution (DTD) for SN Ia explosions we found previously that this model is able to reproduce the abundance ratios and supernova rates of early-type galaxies in the local Universe. Predictions for elemental abundances in the ICM pose a further test of the model. We find that with the fiducial mo…
Aims. The abundances of Fe in the intracluster medium of nearby (z<0.08) clusters were measured up to 0.3$\sim$ 0.5r$_{180}$. Methods. We analyzed 28 clusters of galaxies observed with XMM-Newton. We derived Fe abundances from the flux ratios of Fe lines to the continuum within an energy range of 3.5--6 keV to minimize and evaluate systematic uncertainties. Results. The radial profiles of the Fe abundances of relaxed clusters with a cD galaxy at their X-ray peak have similar slopes. These clusters show similar enhancements in the Fe abundance within 0.1$r_{180}$, and at 0.1--0.3$r_{180}$, they ha…
The statistical analysis of properties of 213 rich clusters of galaxies is performed. The existence of correlations between the X-ray luminosity and the temperature of the intracluster medium and between the X-ray luminosity and the velocity dispersion of the galaxies is confirmed. New anti-correlation between optical luminosities L_Halpha and x-ray luminosities L_x of intracluster gas in clusters is discovered: log(L_Halpha/L_Sun)=a-b(log(L_x/L_Sun)). The existence of sequences in the log(L_Halpha/L_Sun)-log(L_x/L_Sun) plane testifies to that the masses of the intracluster gas in different cl…
The diffuse hot medium inside clusters of galaxies typically exhibits turbulent motions whose amplitude increases with radius, as revealed by cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. However, its physical origin remains unclear. It could either be due to an excess injection of turbulence at large radii, or faster turbulence dissipation at small radii. We investigate this by studying the time evolution of turbulence in the intracluster medium (ICM) after major mergers, using the Omega500 non-radiative hydrodynamical cosmological simulations. By applying a novel wavelet analysis to study the rad…
We observed the northwest region of the cluster of galaxies A3667 with the Suzaku XIS instrument. The temperature and surface brightness of the intracluster medium were measured up to the virial radius (r200-2.3 Mpc). The radial temperature profile is flatter than the average profile for other clusters until the radius reaches the northwest radio relic. The temperature drops sharply from 5 keV to about 2 keV at the northwest radio relic region. The sharp changes of the temperature can be interpreted as a shock with a Mach number of about 2.5. The entropy slope becomes flatter in the outer regi…
Galaxy clusters provide us with important information about the cosmology of our universe. Observations of the X-ray radiation or of the SZ effect allow us to measure the density and temperature of the hot intergalactic medium between the galaxies in a cluster, which then allow us to calculate the total mass of the galaxy cluster. However, no simple connection between the density and the temperature profiles has been identified. Here we use controlled high-resolution numerical simulations to identify a relation between the density and temperature of the gas in equilibrated galaxy clusters. We …
Radio galaxies play an important role in the seeding of cosmic rays and magnetic fields in galaxy clusters. Here, we simulate the evolution of relativistic electrons injected into the intracluster medium by radio galaxies. Using passive tracer particles added to magnetohydrodynamical adaptive-mesh simulations, we calculate the evolution of the spectrum of relativistic electrons taking into account energy losses and re-acceleration mechanisms associated with the dynamics of the intracluster medium. Re-acceleration can occur at shocks via diffusive shock acceleration, and in turbulent flows via …
We investigate the evolution of magnetic fields in galaxy clusters starting from constant primordial fields using highly resolved ($\approx \rm 4 ~kpc$) cosmological MHD simulations. The magnetic fields in our sample exhibit amplification via a small-scale dynamo and compression during structure formation. In particular, we study how the spectral properties of magnetic fields are affected by mergers, and we relate the measured magnetic energy spectra to the dynamical evolution of the intracluster medium. The magnetic energy grows by a factor of $\sim$ 40-50 in a time-span of $\sim 9$ Gyr and e…
Turbulence evolution in a density-stratified medium differs from that of homogeneous isotropic turbulence described by the Kolmogorov picture. We evaluate the degree of this effect in the intracluster medium (ICM) with hydrodynamical simulations. We find that the buoyancy effect induced by ICM density stratification introduces qualitative changes to the turbulence energy evolution, morphology, and the density fluctuation - turbulence Mach number relation, and likely explains the radial dependence of the ICM turbulence amplitude as found previously in cosmological simulations. A new channel of …
We report the first observations of metal distributions in the intracluster medium of the Centaurus cluster up to ~0.17 r_180 with Suzaku. Radial profiles of the O, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe were determined at the outer region of the cluster, and their variations appear to be similar to each other. Within the cool core region (r<0.045 r_ 180), all the metal distributions sharply increased toward the center. In the central region (r<0.015 r_180), the abundances of Si, S, Ar, Ca, and Fe were 1.5--1.8 solar, while those of O and Mg were approximately 1 solar. The derived abundance ratios of O and…
In this work, we investigate the relation between the radially-resolved thermodynamic quantities of the intracluster medium in the X-COP cluster sample, aiming to assess the stratification properties of the ICM. We model the relations between radius, gas temperature, density and pressure using a combination of power-laws, also evaluating the intrinsic scatter in these relations. We show that the gas pressure is remarkably well correlated to the density, with very small scatter. Also, the temperature correlates with gas density with similar scatter. The slopes of these relations have values tha…
We introduce the cosmological HYPER code based on an innovative hydro-particle-mesh (HPM) algorithm for efficient and rapid simulations of gas and dark matter. For the HPM algorithm, we update the approach of Gnedin & Hui (1998) to expand the scope of its application from the lower-density intergalactic medium (IGM) to the higher-density intracluster medium (ICM). While the original algorithm tracks only one effective particle species, the updated version separately tracks the gas and dark matter particles as they do not exactly trace each other on small scales. For the approximate hydrodynami…
Recent first detections of the cross-correlation of the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) signal in Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature maps with gravitational lensing maps inferred from the Planck CMB data and the CFHTLenS galaxy survey provide new probes of the relationship between baryons and dark matter. Using cosmological hydrodynamics simulations, we show that these cross-correlation signals are dominated by contributions from hot gas in the intracluster medium (ICM), rather than diffuse, unbound gas located beyond the virial radius (the "missing baryons"). Thus, these cr…
Turbulence generated by large-scale motions during structure formation affects the evolution of the thermal and non-thermal components of the intracluster medium. As enstrophy is a measure of the magnitude of vorticity, we study the generation and evolution of turbulence by analysing the Lagrangian history of enstrophy. For this purpose we combine cosmological simulations carried out with the ENZO-code with our Lagrangian post-processing tool CRaTer. This way we are able to quantify the individual source terms of enstrophy in the course of the accretion of groups onto galaxy clusters. Here we …
The diffuse plasma inside clusters of galaxies has X-ray emitting temperatures of a few keV. The physical mechanisms that heat this intracluster medium (ICM) to such temperatures include the accretion shock at the periphery of a galaxy cluster, the shocks driven by merger events, as well as a somewhat overlooked mechanism -- the dissipation of intracluster turbulent motions. We study the relative role of these heating mechanisms using galaxy clusters in Lagrangian tracer particle re-simulations of the Omega500 cosmological simulation. We adopt a novel analysis method of decomposing the tempera…
Galaxy groups differ from clusters primarily by way of their lower masses, M~10^14 M_sun vs. M~10^15 M_sun. We discuss how mass affects the thermal state of the intracluster or the intragroup medium, specifically as to their entropy levels and radial profiles. We show that entropy is produced in both cases by the continuing inflow of intergalactic gas across the system boundary into the gravitational potential well. The inflow is highly supersonic in clusters, but weakly so in groups. The former condition implies strong accretion shocks with substantial conversion of a large inflow kinetic int…
We present analysis of bulk and random gas motions in the intracluster medium using high-resolution Eulerian cosmological simulations of sixteen simulated clusters, including both very relaxed and unrelaxed systems and spanning a virial mass range of 5*10^13 - 2*10^15 Msun/h. We investigate effects of the residual subsonic gas motions on the hydrostatic estimates of mass profiles and concentrations of galaxy clusters. In agreement with previous studies we find that the gas motions contribute up to ~ 5%-15% of the total pressure support in relaxed clusters with contribution increasing with clus…
We studied the distributions of metal abundances and metal-mass-to-light ratios in the intracluster medium (ICM) of four galaxy groups, MKW 4, HCG 62, the NGC 1550 group, and the NGC 5044 group, out to 0.5 r180 observed with Suzaku. The Fe abundance decreases with radius, and about 0.2-0.4 solar beyond 0.1 r180. At a given radius in units of r180, the Fe abundance in the ICM of the four galaxy groups were consistent or smaller than those of clusters of galaxies. The Mg/Fe and Si/Fe ratios in the ICM are nearly constant at the solar ratio out to 0.5 r180. We also studied systematic uncertaintie…
Clusters of galaxies as the largest clearly defined objects in our Universe are ideal laboratories to study the distribution of the most abundant chemical elements heavier than hydrogen and helium and the history of their production. The cluster environment allows us to study the element abundances not only inside the galaxies, but also in the intergalactic space, the intracluster medium. Since the intracluster medium is heated to temperatures of several ten Million degrees, we can study the chemical composition of this medium through X-ray spectroscopy. Up to 13 heavy elements have been detec…
We present a parameterized model of the intra-cluster medium that is suitable for jointly analysing pointed observations of the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect and X-ray emission in galaxy clusters. The model is based on assumptions of hydrostatic equilibrium, the Navarro, Frenk and White (NFW) model for the dark matter, and a softened power law profile for the gas entropy. We test this entropy-based model against high and low signal-to-noise mock observations of a relaxed and recently-merged cluster from N-body/hydrodynamic simulations, using Bayesian hyper-parameters to optimise the relative …
Using observations from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, we examine the interaction between the intracluster medium and central radio source in the poor cluster AWM 4. In the Chandra observation a small cool core or galactic corona is resolved coincident with the radio core. This corona is capable of fuelling the active nucleus, but must be inefficiently heated by jet interactions or conduction, possibly precluding a feedback relationship between the radio source and cluster. A lack of clearly detected X-ray cavities suggests that the radio lobes are only part…
We examine deep XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) observations of the X-ray luminous galaxy cluster A1835. For the first time in a galaxy cluster we place direct limits on turbulent broadening of the emission lines. This is possible because the coolest X-ray emitting gas in the cluster, which is responsible for the lines, occupies a small region within the core. The most conservative determination of the 90 per cent upper limit on line-of-sight, non-thermal, velocity broadening is 274 km/s, measured from the emission lines originating within 30 kpc radius. The ratio of turbulent…
We have investigated the baryon-mass content in a subsample of 19 clusters of galaxies extracted from the X-ray flux-limited sample HIFLUGCS according to their positions in the sky. For these clusters, we measured total masses and characteristic radii on the basis of a rich optical spectroscopic data set, the physical properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) using XMM-Newton and ROSAT X-ray data, and total (galaxy) stellar masses utilizing the SDSS DR7 multi-band imaging. The observed (hot) gas-mass fractions are almost constant in this mass range. We confirm that the stellar mass fraction …
The results from Suzaku observations of the central region of the Perseus cluster are presented. Deep exposures with the X-ray Imaging Spectrometer provide high quality X-ray spectra from the intracluster medium. X-ray lines from helium-like Cr and Mn have been detected significantly for the first time in clusters. In addition, elemental abundances of Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe, and Ni are accurately measured within 10' (or 220 kpc) from the cluster center. The relative abundance ratios are found to be within a range of 0.8-1.5 times the solar value. These abundance ratios are compared with pre…
Active galactic nuclei (AGN) powered by the central Super-Massive Black Holes (SMBHs) play a major role in modifying the thermal properties of the intracluster medium (ICM). In this work, we implement two AGN heating models: (i) by buoyant cavities rising through stratified ICM (effervescent model) and, (ii) by viscous and conductive dissipation of sound waves (acoustic model). Our aim is to determine whether these heating models are consistent with ICM observables and if one is preferred over the other. We assume an initial entropy profile of ICM that is expected from the purely gravitational…
In this paper we investigate how convective instabilities influence heat conduction in the intracluster medium (ICM) of cool-core galaxy clusters. The ICM is a high-beta, weakly collisional plasma in which the transport of momentum and heat is aligned with the magnetic field. The anisotropy of heat conduction, in particular, gives rise to instabilities that can access energy stored in a temperature gradient of either sign. We focus on the heat-flux buoyancy-driven instability (HBI), which feeds on the outwardly increasing temperature profile of cluster cool cores. Our aim is to elucidate how t…
We present numerical simulations of galaxy clusters with stochastic heating from active galactic nuclei (AGN) that are able to reproduce the observed entropy and temperature profiles of non-cool-core (NCC) clusters. Our study uses N-body hydrodynamical simulations to investigate how star formation, metal production, black hole accretion and the associated feedback from supernovae and AGN heat and enrich diffuse gas in galaxy clusters. We assess how different implementations of these processes affect the thermal and chemical properties of the intracluster medium (ICM), using high-quality X-ray …
Galaxy clusters host the largest particle accelerators in the Universe: Shock waves in the intracluster medium (ICM), a hot and ionised plasma, that accelerate particles to high energies. Radio observations pick up synchrotron emission in the ICM, proving the existence of accelerated cosmic-ray electrons. However, a sign of cosmic-ray protons, in form of $γ$-rays. remains undetected. This is know as the missing $γ$-ray problem and it directly challenges the shock acceleration mechanism at work in the ICM. Over the last decade, theoretical and numerical studies focused on improving our knowledg…
We present preliminary results from an on-going program that aims at mapping the intracluster medium (ICM) temperature of high redshift galaxy clusters from the MaDCoWS sample using a joint analysis of shallow X-ray data obtained by $Chandra$ and high angular resolution Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) observations realized with the NIKA2 and MUSTANG-2 cameras. We also present preliminary results from an on-going Open Time program within the NIKA2 collaboration that aims at mapping the ICM temperature of a galaxy cluster at $z=0.45$ from the resolved detection of the relativistic corrections to the SZ …
Galactic jets are powerful energy sources reheating the intra-cluster medium in galaxy clusters. Their crucial role in the cosmic puzzle, motivated by observations, has been established by a great number of numerical simulations missing the relativistic nature of these jets. We present the first relativistic simulations of the very long term evolution of realistic galactic jets. Unexpectedly, our results show no buoyant bubbles, but large cocoon regions compatible with the observed X-ray cavities. The reheating is more efficient and faster than in previous scenarios, and it is produced by the …
The cluster of galaxies MS 1512.4+3647 (z=0.372) was observed with Suzaku for 270 ks. Besides the Fe abundance, the abundances of Mg, Si, S, and Ni are separately determined for the first time in a medium redshift cluster (z>0.3). The derived abundance pattern of MS 1512.4+3647 is consistent with those of nearby clusters, suggesting that the system has similar contributions from supernovae (SNe) Ia and SNe II to nearby clusters. The number ratio of SNe II to SNe Ia is $\sim3$. The estimated total numbers of both SNe II and SNe Ia against gas mass indicate similar correlation with those for the…
The origin of magnetic fields in clusters of galaxies is still an unsolved problem, which is largely due to our poor understanding of initial seed magnetic fields. If the seed magnetic fields have primordial origins, it is likely that large-scale pervasive magnetic fields were present before the formation of the large-scale structure. On the other hand, if they were ejected from astrophysical bodies, they were highly localized in space at the time of injection. In this paper, using turbulence dynamo models for high magnetic Prandtl number fluids, we find constraints on the seed magnetic fields…
We present radial entropy profiles of the intracluster medium (ICM) for a collection of 239 clusters taken from the Chandra X-ray Observatory's Data Archive. Entropy is of great interest because it controls ICM global properties and records the thermal history of a cluster. Entropy is therefore a useful quantity for studying the effects of feedback on the cluster environment and investigating any breakdown of cluster self-similarity. We find that most ICM entropy profiles are well-fit by a model which is a power-law at large radii and approaches a constant value at small radii: K(r) = K0 + K10…
Galaxy clusters are the largest and most massive bound objects resulting from cosmic hierarchical structure formation. Baryons account for somewhat more than 10% of that mass, with roughly 90% of the baryonic matter distributed throughout the clusters as hot ($T>1$ keV), high-$β$, very weakly collisional plasma; the so-called "intracluster medium" (ICM). Cluster mergers, close gravitational encounters and accretion, along with violent feedback from galaxies and relativistic jets from active galactic nuclei, drive winds, gravity waves, turbulence and shocks within the ICM. Those dynamics, in tu…
The origin of magnetic fields in clusters of galaxies is still a matter of debate. Observations for intracluster magnetic fields over a wide range of redshifts are crucial to constrain possible scenarios for the origin and evolution of the fields. (Differences of Faraday rotation measures (RMs) of an embedded double radio sources, i.e. a pair of lobes of mostly Fanaroff--Riley type II radio galaxies, are free from the Faraday rotation contributions from the interstellar medium inside the Milky Way and the intergalactic medium between radio galaxies and us, and hence provide a novel way to esti…
The rich galaxy cluster Abell 2204 exhibits edges in its X-ray surface brightness at $\sim 65$ and $35 {\rm~ kpc}$ west and east of its center, respectively. The presence of these edges, which were interpreted as sloshing cold fronts, implies that the intracluster medium was recently disturbed. We analyze the properties of the intracluster medium using multiple Chandra observations of Abell 2204. We find a density ratio $n_{\rm in}/n_{\rm out} = 2.05\pm0.05$ and a temperature ratio $T_{\rm out}/T_{\rm in} = 1.91\pm0.27$ (projected, or $1.87\pm0.56$ deprojected) across the western edge, and cor…
In low-density plasma environments, such as the intracluster medium (ICM), the Larmour frequency is much larger than the ion-ion collision frequency. In such a case, the thermal pressure becomes anisotropic with respect to the magnetic field orientation and the evolution of the turbulent gas is more correctly described by a kinetic approach. A possible description of these collisionless scenarios is given by the so-called kinetic magnetohydrodynamic (KMHD) formalism, in which particles freely stream along the field lines, while moving with the field lines in the perpendicular direction. In thi…
Cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of galaxy clusters are still challenged to produce a model for the intracluster medium that matches all aspects of current X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich observations. To facilitate such comparisons with future simulations and to enable realistic cluster population studies for modeling e.g., non-thermal emission processes, we construct a phenomenological model for the intracluster medium that is based on a representative sample of observed X-ray clusters. We create a mock galaxy cluster catalog based on the large collisionless N-body simulation MultiDark, …
The interaction of gas-rich galaxies with the intra-cluster medium (ICM) of galaxy clusters has a remarkable impact on their evolution, mainly due to the gas loss associated with this process. In this work, we use an idealised, high-resolution simulation of a Virgo-like cluster, run with RAMSES and with dynamics reproducing that of a zoom cosmological simulation, to investigate the interaction of infalling galaxies with the ICM. We find that the tails of ram pressure stripped galaxies give rise to a population of up to more than a hundred clumps of molecular gas lurking in the cluster. The num…
Both simulations and observations have shown that turbulence is a pervasive phenomenon in cosmic scenarios, yet it is particularly difficult to model numerically due to its intrinsically multiscale character which demands high resolutions. Additionally, turbulence is tightly connected to the dynamical state and the formation history of galaxies and galaxy clusters, producing a diverse phenomenlogy which requires large samples of such structures to attain robust conclusions. In this work, we use an adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) cosmological simulation to explore the generation and dissipation …
Faraday rotation and synchrotron emission from extragalactic radio sources give evidence for the presence of magnetic fields extending over ~Mpc scales. However, the origin of these fields remains elusive. With new high-resolution grid simulations we studied the growth of magnetic fields in a massive galaxy cluster that in several aspects is similar to the Coma cluster. We investigated models in which magnetic fields originate from primordial seed fields with comoving strengths of 0.1 nG at redshift z=30. The simulations show evidence of significant magnetic field amplification. At the best sp…
Several types/classes of shocks naturally arise during formation and evolution of galaxy clusters. One such class is represented by accretion shocks, associated with deceleration of infalling baryons. Such shocks, characterized by a very high Mach number, are present even in 1D models of cluster evolution. Another class is composed of "runaway merger shocks", which appear when a merger shock, driven by a sufficiently massive infalling subcluster, propagates away from the main-cluster center. We argue that, when the merger shock overtakes the accretion shock, a new long-living shock is formed t…
We present panco2, an open-source Python library designed to extract galaxy cluster pressure profiles from maps of the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. The extraction is based on forward modeling of the total observed signal, allowing to take into account usual features of millimeter observations, such as beam smearing, data processing filtering, and point source contamination. panco2 offers a large flexibility in the inputs that can be handled and in the analysis options, enabling refined analyses and studies of systematic effects. We detail the functionalities of the code, the algorithm use…
The distribution of chemical elements in the hot intracluster medium (ICM) retains valuable information about the enrichment and star formation histories of galaxy clusters, and on the feedback and dynamical processes driving the evolution of the cosmic baryons. In the present study we review the progresses made so far in the modelling of the ICM chemical enrichment in a cosmological context, focusing in particular on cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. We will review the key aspects of embedding chemical evolution models into hydrodynamical simulations, with special attention to the cruc…
Clusters of galaxies provide a closed box within which one can determine the chemical evolution of the gaseous baryons with cosmic time. We studied this metallicity evolution in the hot X-ray emitting baryons through an analysis of XMM-Newton observations of 29 galaxy clusters in the redshift range 0.3 < z < 1.3. Taken alone, this data set does not show evidence for significant evolution. However, when we also include a comparable sample of 115 clusters observed with Chandra (Maughan et al. 2008) and a lower redshift sample of 70 clusters observed with XMM at z < 0.3 (Snowden et al. 2008), the…
While feedback from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is an important heating source in the centre of galaxy clusters, it is still unclear how the feedback energy is injected into the intracluster medium (ICM) and what role different numerical approaches play. Here, we compare four hydrodynamical schemes in idealized simulations of a rising bubble inflated by AGN feedback in a hot stratified ICM: (traditional) smoothed particle hydrodynamics (TSPH), a pressure flavour of SPH (PSPH), a meshless finite mass (MFM) scheme, as well as an Eulerian code with adaptive mesh refinement. In the absence of mag…
We use a statistical sample of galaxy clusters from a large cosmological $N$-body$+$hydrodynamics simulation to examine the relation between morphology, or shape, of the X-ray emitting intracluster medium (ICM) and the mass accretion history of the galaxy clusters. We find that the mass accretion rate (MAR) of a cluster is correlated with the ellipticity of the ICM. The correlation is largely driven by material accreted in the last $\sim 4.5$~Gyr, indicating a characteristic time-scale for relaxation of cluster gas. Furthermore, we find that the ellipticity of the outer regions ($R\sim R_{\rm …
In the outskirts of the intracluster medium (ICM) in galaxy clusters, the temperature decreases with radius. Due to the weakly collisional nature of the plasma, these regions are susceptible to the magneto-thermal instability (MTI), which can sustain turbulence and provide turbulent pressure support in the ICM. This instability arises due to heat conduction directed along the magnetic field, with a heat conductivity which is normally assumed to be given by the Spitzer value. Recent numerical studies of the ion mirror and the electron whistler instability using particle-in-cell codes have shown…
In the intracluster medium (ICM) of galaxy clusters, heat and momentum are transported almost entirely along (but not across) magnetic field lines. We perform the first fully self-consistent Braginskii-MHD simulations of galaxy clusters including both of these effects. Specifically, we perform local and global simulations of the magnetothermal instability (MTI) and the heat-flux-driven buoyancy instability (HBI) and assess the effects of viscosity on their saturation and astrophysical implications. We find that viscosity has only a modest effect on the saturation of the MTI. As in previous cal…
Turbulence in the weakly collisional intracluster medium of galaxies (ICM) is able to generate strong thermal velocity anisotropies in the ions (with respect to the local magnetic field direction), if the magnetic moment of the particles is conserved in the absence of Coulomb collisions. In this scenario, the anisotropic pressure magnetohydrodynamic (AMHD) turbulence shows a very different statistical behaviour from the standard MHD one and is unable to amplify seed magnetic fields, in disagreement with previous cosmological MHD simulations which are successful to explain the observed magnetic…
We simulate the evolution of relativistic electrons injected into the medium of a small galaxy cluster by a central radio galaxy, studying how the initial jet power affects the dispersal and the emission properties of radio plasma. By coupling passive tracer particles to adaptive-mesh cosmological MHD simulations, we study how cosmic-ray electrons are dispersed as a function of the input jet power. We also investigate how the latter affects the thermal and non-thermal properties of the intracluster medium, with differences discernible up to $\sim$ Gyr after the start of the jet. We evolved the…
