In a flat universe dominated by dark energy, the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect can be detected as a large-angle cross-correlation between the CMB and a tracer of large scale structure. We investigate whether the inconclusive ISW signal derived from 2MASS galaxy maps can be improved upon by including photometric redshifts for the 2MASS galaxies. These redshifts are derived by matching the 2MASS data with optical catalogues generated from SuperCOSMOS scans of major photographic sky surveys. We find no significant ISW signal in this analysis; an ISW effect of the form expected in a LambdaCDM universe is only weakly preferred over no correlation, with a likelihood ratio of 1.5:1. We consider ISW detection prospects for future large scale structure surveys with fainter magnitude limits and greater survey depth; even with the best possible data, the ISW cross-correlation signal would be expected to evade detection in >~ 10% of cases.
We estimate the local density field in redshift shells to a maximum redshift of z=0.3, using photometric redshifts for the 2MASS galaxy catalogue, matched to optical data from the SuperCOSMOS galaxy catalogue. This density-field map is used to predict the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) CMB anisotropies that originate within the volume at z<0.3. We investigate the impact of this estimated ISW foreground signal on large-scale anomalies in the WMAP CMB data. We find that removal of the foreground ISW signal from WMAP data reduces the significance of a number of reported large-scale anomalies in the…
We investigate the use of simple colour cuts applied to the SDSS optical imaging to perform photometric selections of emission line galaxies out to z<1. From colour-cuts using the SDSS g, r and i bands, we obtain mean photometric redshifts of z=0.32+-0.08, z=0.44+-0.12 and z=0.65+-0.21. We further calibrate our high redshift selection using spectroscopic observations with the AAOmega spectrograph on the 4m Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT), observing ~50-200 galaxy candidates in 4 separate fields. With just 1-hour of integration time and with seeing of ~1.6", we successfully determined redshift…
The decay of gravitational potentials in the presence of dark energy leads to an additional, late-time contribution to anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at large angular scales. The imprint of this so-called integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect to the CMB angular power spectrum has been detected and studied in detail, but reconstructing its spatial contributions to the CMB $\textit{map}$, which would offer the tantalizing possibility of separating the early- from the late-time contributions to CMB temperature fluctuations, is more challenging. Here we study the technique for…
We present the cross-correlation of the density map of LRGs and the temperature fluctuation in the CMB as measured by the WMAP5 observations. The LRG samples were extracted from imaging data of the SDSS based on two previous spectroscopic redshift surveys, the SDSS-LRG and the 2SLAQ surveys at average redshifts z~0.35 and z~0.55. In addition we have added a higher-redshift photometric LRG sample based on the selection of the AAOmega LRG redshift survey at z~0.7. The total LRG sample thus comprises 1.5 million galaxies, sampling a redshift range of 0.2 < z < 0.9 over ~7600 square degrees of the…
The cross-correlation between the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect and the large scale structure (LSS) is a powerful tool to constrain dark energy and alternative theories of gravity. In this paper, we obtain observational constraints on kinetic gravity braiding from the ISW-LSS cross-correlation. We find that the late-time ISW effect in the kinetic gravity braiding model anti-correlates with large scale structures in a wide range of parameters, which clearly demonstrates how one can distinguish modified gravity theories from the LCDM model using the ISW effect. In addition to the analysis …
We use the cross-correlation power spectrum of the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropy and galaxy fluctuations to probe the physics of late-time cosmic acceleration. For this purpose, we focus on three models of dark energy that belong to a sub-class of Horndeski theories with the speed of gravity equivalent to that of light: Galileon Ghost Condensate (GGC), Generalized Cubic Covariant Galileon (GCCG), and K-mouflage. In the GGC and GCCG models, the existence of cubic-order scalar self-interactions allows a possibility for realizi…
The photometry profile of the integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect recently obtained by the Planck consortium by stacking patches of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) sky maps around a large number of cosmic voids, contains a cold ring at about half the void's effective radius surrounded by a hot ring near the void's boundary. The source of the temperature structure is assumed to be the ISW effect but the exact cause of the ringed structure is not currently well understood, particularly the outer hot ring. Numerical simulations have suggested that hot/cold ring structures can be produced by mot…
We derive updated constraints on the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect through cross-correlation of the cosmic microwave background with galaxy surveys. We improve with respect to similar previous analyses in several ways. First, we use the most recent versions of extragalactic object catalogs: SDSS DR12 photometric redshift (photo-$z$) and 2MASS Photo-$z$ datasets, as well as employed earlier for ISW, SDSS QSO photo-$z$ and NVSS samples. Second, we use for the first time the WISE~$\times$~SuperCOSMOS catalog, which allows us to perform an all-sky analysis of the ISW up to $z\sim0.4$. Third,…

In this paper we rely on the quasar (QSO) catalog of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release Six (SDSS DR6) of about one million photometrically selected QSOs to compute the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect at high redshift, aiming at constraining the behavior of the expansion rate and thus the behaviour of dark energy at those epochs. This unique sample significantly extends previous catalogs to higher redshifts while retaining high efficiency in the selection algorithm. We compute the auto-correlation function (ACF) of QSO number density from which we extract the bias and the stellar co…
Cosmic structures leave an imprint on the microwave background radiation through the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect. We construct a template map of the linear signal using the SDSS-III Baryon Acoustic Oscillation Survey at redshift 0.43 < z < 0.65. We verify the imprint of this map on the Planck CMB temperature map at the 97% confidence level and show consistency with the density-temperature cross-correlation measurement. Using this ISW reconstruction as a template we investigate the presence of ISW sources and further examine the properties of the Granett-Neyrinck-Szapudi supervoid and supercl…
We consider the prospects for measuring the pairwise kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) signal from galaxy clusters discovered in large photometric surveys such as the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We project that the DES cluster sample will, in conjunction with existing mm-wave data from the South Pole Telescope (SPT), yield a detection of the pairwise kSZ signal at the 8-13 sigma level, with sensitivity peaking for clusters separated by ~100 Mpc distances. A next-generation version of SPT would allow for a 18-30 sigma detection and would be limited by variance from the kSZ signal itself and residu…
One of the open questions of modern cosmology is the nature and properties of the Dark Matter halo and its substructures. In this work we study the gravitational effect of dark matter substructures on pulsar timing observations. Since millisecond pulsars are stable and accurate emitters, they have been proposed as plausible astrophysical tools to probe the gravitational effects of dark matter structures. We study this effect on pulsar timing through Shapiro time delay (or Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect) and Doppler effects statistically, showing that the latter dominates the signal. For t…
We explore a new approach for extracting reionization-era contributions to the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect. Our method utilizes the cross-power spectrum between filtered and squared maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and photometric galaxy surveys during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). This kSZ$^2$-galaxy cross-power spectrum statistic has been successfully detected at lower redshifts ($z \lesssim 1.5$). Here we extend this method to $z \gtrsim 6$ as a potential means to extract signatures of patchy reionization. We model the expected signal across multiple photometric …
We use data from the DESI Legacy Survey imaging to probe the galaxy density field in tomographic slices covering the redshift range $0<z<0.8$. After careful consideration of completeness corrections and galactic cuts, we obtain a sample of $4.9\times 10^7$ galaxies covering 17 739 deg$^2$. We derive photometric redshifts with precision $σ_z/(1+z)=0.012 - 0.015$, and compare with alternative estimates. Cross-correlation of the tomographic galaxy maps with Planck maps of CMB temperature and lensing convergence probe the growth of structure since $z=0.8$. The signals are compared with a fiducial …
We investigate the prospects of measuring the cosmic magnification effect by cross-correlating neutral hydrogen intensity mapping (HI IM) maps with background optical galaxies. We forecast the signal-to-noise ratio for HI IM data from SKA1-MID and HIRAX, combined with LSST photometric galaxy samples. We find that, thanks to their different resolutions, SKA1-MID and HIRAX are highly complementary in such an analysis. We predict that SKA1-MID can achieve a detection with a signal-to-noise ratio of $\sim 15$ on a multipole range of $\ell \lesssim 200$, while HIRAX can reach a signal-to-noise rati…
Near future cosmology will see the advent of wide area photometric galaxy surveys, like the Dark Energy Survey (DES), that extent to high redshifts (z ~ 1 - 2) but with poor radial distance resolution. In such cases splitting the data into redshift bins and using the angular correlation function $w(θ)$, or the $C_{\ell}$ power spectrum, will become the standard approach to extract cosmological information or to study the nature of dark energy through the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) probe. In this work we present a detailed model for $w(θ)$ at large scales as a function of redshift and b…
We present a sample of 485 photometrically identified Type Ia supernova candidates mined from the first three years of data of the CFHT SuperNova Legacy Survey (SNLS). The images were submitted to a deferred processing independent of the SNLS real-time detection pipeline. Light curves of all transient events were reconstructed in the g_M, r_M, i_M and z_M filters and submitted to automated sequential cuts in order to identify possible supernovae. Pure noise and long-term variable events were rejected by light curve shape criteria. Type Ia supernova identification relied on event characteristic…
The coming decade will be an exciting period for dark energy research, during which astronomers will address the question of what drives the accelerated cosmic expansion as first revealed by type Ia supernova (SN) distances, and confirmed by later observations. The mystery of dark energy poses a challenge of such magnitude that, as stated by the Dark Energy Task Force (DETF), "nothing short of a revolution in our understanding of fundamental physics will be required to achieve a full understanding of the cosmic acceleration." The lack of multiple complementary precision observations is a major…
We provide exact solutions to the cosmological matter perturbation equation in a homogeneous FLRW universe with a vacuum energy that can be parametrized by a constant equation of state parameter $w$ and a very accurate approximation for the Ansatz $w(a)=w_0+w_a(1-a)$. We compute the growth index $γ=\log f(a)/\log\Om_m(a)$, and its redshift dependence, using the exact and approximate solutions in terms of Legendre polynomials and show that it can be parametrized as $γ(a)=γ_0+γ_a(1-a)$ in most cases. We then compare four different types of dark energy (DE) models: $wΛ$CDM, DGP, $f(R)$ and a LTB-…
The alignment of the CMB Cold Spot and the Eridanus supervoid suggests a physical connection between these two relatively rare objects. We use galaxy cata\-logues with photometric (2MPZ) and spectroscopic (6dF) redshift measurements, supplemented by low-redshift compilations of cosmic voids, in order to improve the 3D mapping of the matter density in the Eridanus constellation. We find evidence for a supervoid with a significant elongation in the line-of-sight, effectively spanning the total redshift range $z<0.3$. Our tomographic imaging reveals important substructure in the Eridanus supervoi…
Photometric redshifts are essential in studies of both galaxy evolution and cosmology, as they enable analyses of objects too numerous or faint for spectroscopy. The Rubin Observatory, Euclid, and Roman Space Telescope will soon provide a new generation of imaging surveys with unprecedented area coverage, wavelength range, and depth. To take full advantage of these datasets, further progress in photometric redshift methods is needed. In this review, we focus on the greatest common challenges and prospects for improvement in applications of photo-$z$'s to the next generation of surveys: - Gains…
The field of millimetre-wave line-intensity mapping (LIM) is seeing increased experimental activity with pathfinder surveys already deployed or deploying in the next few years, making spectroscopic measurements of unresolved atomic and molecular line emission tracing the large-scale structure of the Universe. The next decade will also see the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) undertake a photometric galaxy survey programme of unprecedented scope, including measurements of cosmic shear exploiting weak gravitational lensing (WL) of background galaxies to map projected larg…
Determining the redshift distribution $n(z)$ of galaxy samples is essential for several cosmological probes including weak lensing. For imaging surveys, this is usually done using photometric redshifts estimated on an object-by-object basis. We present a new approach for directly measuring the global $n(z)$ of cosmological galaxy samples, including uncertainties, using forward modeling. Our method relies on image simulations produced using UFig (Ultra Fast Image Generator) and on ABC (Approximate Bayesian Computation) within the $MCCL$ (Monte-Carlo Control Loops) framework. The galaxy populati…

Abstract abridged. The eROSITA X-ray telescope aboard the SRG orbital observatory, in the course of its all-sky survey, is expected to detect about three million active galactic nuclei (AGN) and hundred thousand clusters and groups of galaxies. Such a sample complemented with redshift information, will open a new window into the studies of the Large-Scale structure (LSS) of the Universe and the determination of its cosmological parameters. The purpose of this work is to assess the prospects of cosmological measurements with the eROSITA sample of AGN and clusters of galaxies. We assume the avai…
We present the high redshift (3<z<5.3) 0.5-2 keV number counts and the 2-10 keV (rest frame) space density of X-ray selected AGNs detected in the Chandra COSMOS survey. The sample comprises 81 X-ray detected sources with available spectroscopic (31) and photometric (50) redshifts plus 20 sources with a formal z_phot<3 but with a broad photometric redshift probability distribution, such that z_phot+1sigma>3. 81 sources are selected in the 0.5-2 keV band, 14 are selected in the 2-10 keV and 6 in the 0.5-10 keV bands. We sample the high luminosity (log L_(2-10 keV)>44.15 erg/s) space density up t…
We investigate the prospects of extending observations of high redshift QSOs to z>8 by means of a very wide-area near-infrared slitless spectroscopic survey, e.g. the planned survey with the European Space Agency's Euclid telescope. For any QSOs at z>8.06 the strong Lyman-alpha line will enter the wavelength range of the Euclid near-infrared spectrometer and imaging photometer (NISP). We perform a detailed simulation of Euclid NISP slitless spectroscopy (with the parameters of the wide survey) in an artificial field containing QSO spectra at all redshifts up to z=12. The simulation spectra are…
We study the prospects for detecting neutrino masses from the galaxy angular power spectrum in photometric redshift shells of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) over a volume of 20 (Gpc/h)^3 combined with the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) angular fluctuations expected to be measured from the Planck satellite. We find that for a Lambda-CDM concordance model with 7 free parameters in addition to a fiducial neutrino mass of M_nu = 0.24 eV, we recover from DES &Planck the correct value with uncertainty of +- 0.12 eV (95 % CL), assuming perfect knowledge of the galaxy biasing. If the fiducial total m…

Primordial features are one of the most important extensions of the Standard Model of cosmology, providing a wealth of information on the primordial universe, ranging from discrimination between inflation and alternative scenarios, new particle detection, to fine structures in the inflationary potential. We study the prospects of future large-scale structure (LSS) surveys on the detection and constraints of these features. We classify primordial feature models into several classes, and for each class we present a simple template of power spectrum that encodes the essential physics. We study ho…
Understanding the origin of fast radio bursts (FRB's) is a central unsolved problem in astrophysics that is severely hampered by their poorly determined distance scale. Determining the redshift distribution of FRB's appears to require arcsecond angular resolution, in order to associate FRB's with host galaxies. In this paper, we forecast prospects for determining the redshift distribution without host galaxy associations, by cross-correlating FRB's with a galaxy catalog such as the SDSS photometric sample. The forecasts are extremely promising: a survey such as CHIME/FRB that measures catalogs…
