Let M^7 a manifold with holonomy in G_2, and Y^3 an associative submanifold with boundary in a coassociative submanifold. In [5], the authors proved that M_{X,Y}, the moduli space of its associative deformations with boundary in the fixed X, has finite virtual dimension. Using Bochner's technique, we give a vanishing theorem that forces M_{X,Y} to be locally smooth.
We discuss a model for associative submanifolds in $G_{2}$-manifolds with K3 fibrations, in the adiabatic limit. The model involves graphs in a 3-manifold whose edges are locally gradient flow lines. We show that this model produces analogues of known singularity formation phenomena for associative submanifolds.
Associative submanifolds $A$ in nearly parallel $G_2$-manifolds $Y$ are minimal 3-submanifolds in spin 7-manifolds with a real Killing spinor. The Riemannian cone over $Y$ has the holonomy group contained in ${\rm Spin(7)}$ and the Riemannian cone over $A$ is a Cayley submanifold. Infinitesimal deformations of associative submanifolds were considered by the author. This paper is a continuation of the work. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for an infinitesimal associative deformation to be integrable (unobstructed) to second order explicitly. As an application, we show that the infi…
We give a sufficient condition for an associative submanifold in a G2-manifold to appear as the bubbling locus of a sequence of G2-instantons, related to the existence of a Fueter section of a bundle of ASD instanton moduli spaces over said submanifold.
We study associative submanifolds of the Berger space SO(5)/SO(3) endowed with its homogeneous nearly-parallel G2-structure. We focus on two geometrically interesting classes: the ruled associatives, and the associatives with special Gauss map. We show that the associative submanifolds ruled by a certain special type of geodesic are in correspondence with pseudo-holomorphic curves in $Gr_2^+(TS^4).$ Using this correspondence, together with a theorem of Bryant on superminimal surfaces in $S^4,$ we prove the existence of infinitely many topological types of compact immersed associative 3-folds i…
Building on ideas from [DT98; DS11; Wal17; Hay17], we outline a proposal for constructing Floer homology groups associated with a G2-manifold. These groups are generated by associative submanifolds and solutions of the ADHM Seiberg-Witten equations. The construction is motivated by the analysis of various transitions which can change the number of associative submanifolds. We discuss the relation of our proposal to Pandharipande and Thomas' stable pair invariant of Calabi-Yau 3-folds.
A nearly parallel $G_{2}$-manifold $Y$ is a Riemannian 7-manifold whose cone $C(Y) = \mathbb{R}_{>0} \times Y$ has the holonomy group contained in ${\rm Spin(7)}$. In other words, it is a spin 7-manifold with a real Killing spinor. We have a special class of calibrated submanifolds called Cayley submanifolds in $C(Y)$. An associative submanifold in $Y$ is a minimal 3-submanifold whose cone is Cayley. We study its deformations, namely, Cayley cone deformations, explicitly when it is homogeneous in the 7-sphere $S^{7}$.
The squashed 7-sphere $S^{7}$ is a 7-sphere with an Einstein metric given by the canonical variation and its cone $\mathbb{R}^{8} - \{ 0 \}$ has full holonomy ${\rm Spin}(7)$. There is a canonical calibrating 4-form $Φ$ on $\mathbb{R}^{8} - \{ 0 \}$. A minimal 3-submanifold in $S^{7}$ is called associative if its cone is calibrated by $Φ$. In this paper, we classify two types of fundamental associative submanifolds in the squashed $S^{7}$. One is obtained by the intersection with a 4-plane and the other is homogeneous. Then we study their infinitesimal associative deformations and explicitly s…
Let $M$ be a topological $G_2$-manifold. We prove that the space of infinitesimal associative deformations of a compact associative submanifold $Y$ with boundary in a coassociative submanifold $X$ is the solution space of an elliptic problem. For a connected boundary $\partial Y$ of genus $g$, the index is given by $\int_{\partial Y}c_1(ν_X)+1-g$, where $ν_X$ denotes the orthogonal complement of $T\partial Y$ in $TX_{|\partial Y}$ and $c_1(ν_X)$ the first Chern class of $ν_X$ with respect to its natural complex structure. Further, we exhibit explicit examples of non-trivial index.
Associative submanifolds of the 7-sphere S^7 are 3-dimensional minimal submanifolds which are the links of calibrated 4-dimensional cones in R^8 called Cayley cones. Examples of associative 3-folds are thus given by the links of complex and special Lagrangian cones in C^4, as well as Lagrangian submanifolds of the nearly Kähler 6-sphere. By classifying the associative group orbits, we exhibit the first known explicit example of an associative 3-fold in S^7 which does not arise from other geometries. We then study associative 3-folds satisfying the curvature constraint known as Chen's equality,…
Let $M^7$ be a smooth manifold equipped with a $G_2$-structure $ϕ$, and $Y^3$ be an closed compact $ϕ$-associative submanifold. In \cite{McL}, R. McLean proved that the moduli space $\bm_{Y,ϕ}$ of the $ϕ$-associative deformations of $Y$ has vanishing virtual dimension. In this paper, we perturb $ϕ$ into a $G_2$-structure $ψ$ in order to ensure the smoothness of $\bm_{Y,ψ}$ near $Y$. If $Y$ is allowed to have a boundary moving in a fixed coassociative submanifold $X$, it was proved in \cite{GaWi} that the moduli space $\bm_{Y,X}$ of the associative deformations of $Y$ with boundary in $X$ has f…
We study deformations of associative submanifolds $Y^3\subset M^7$ of a $G_2$ manifold $M^7$. We show that the deformation space can be perturbed to be smooth, and it can be made compact and zero dimensional by constraining it with an additional equation. This allows us to associate local invariants to associative submanifolds of $M$. The local equations at each associative $Y$ are restrictions of a global equation on a certain associated Grassmann bundle over $ M$.
The principal theory of this paper comprises a technique for constructing associative, coassociative and Cayley submanifolds of Euclidean space with symmetries, using first-order ordinary differential equations. Explicit examples of U(1)-invariant associative cones in R^7 and SU(2)-invariant Cayley 4-folds in R^8 are then produced using this method. Further examples of associative 3-folds are presented, which are ruled, and other systems of differential equations defining calibrated submanifolds in R^7 and R^8 are given.
Every compact 3-Sasakian 7-manifold $M$ admits a canonical 2-parameter family of co-closed $\text{G}_2$-structures $φ_{a,b}$ for $a,b > 0$, as well as a foliation by $φ_{a,b}$-associative 3-folds whose leaf space $X$ is a positive quaternion-Kähler 4-orbifold. We prove that associative 3-folds in $(M,φ_{a,b})$ that are ruled by a certain type of geodesic are in correspondence with pseudo-holomorphic curves in the almost-complex 8-manifold $Z \times S^2$, where $Z$ is the twistor space of $X$ equipped with its strict nearly-Kähler structure. As an application, we construct infinitely many topol…
By analogy with associative and co-associative cases we introduce a class of three-dimensional non-orientable submanifolds, of almost $\mathrm{G}_2-$manifolds, modelled on planes lying in a special $\mathrm{G}_2-$orbit. An application of the Cartan-Kähler theory shows that some three-manifold can be presented in this way. We also classify all the homogeneous ones in $\mathbb{RP}^7$.
We investigate the geometry and topology of submanifolds under a sharp pinching condition involving extrinsic invariants like the mean curvature and the length of the second fundamental form. Several homology vanishing results are given. Moreover, an integral bound is provided for the Bochner operator of compact Euclidean submanifolds in terms of the Betti numbers.
We derive formulas for the mean curvature of associative 3-folds, coassociative 4-folds, and Cayley 4-folds in the general case where the ambient space has intrinsic torsion. Consequently, we are able to characterize those G2-structures (resp., Spin(7)-structures) for which every associative 3-fold (resp. coassociative 4-fold, Cayley 4-fold) is a minimal submanifold. In the process, we obtain new obstructions to the local existence of coassociative 4-folds in G2-structures with torsion.
We study co-associative fibrations of G_{2}-manifolds. We propose that the adiabatic limit of this structure should be given locally by a maximal submanifold in a space of indefinite signature and set up global versions of the constructions.
By a theorem of Mclean, the deformation space of an associative submanifold Y of an integrable G_2 manifold (M,ϕ) can be identified with the kernel of a Dirac operator D:Ω^{0}(ν) -->Ω^{0}(ν) on the normal bundle νof Y. Here, we generalize this to the non-integrable case, and also show that the deformation space becomes smooth after perturbing it by natural parameters, which corresponds to moving Y through `pseudo-associative' submanifolds. Infinitesimally, this corresponds to twisting the Dirac operator D --> D_{A} with connections A of ν. Furthermore, the normal bundles of the associative sub…
Given a parallel calibration $ϕ\in Ω^p(M)$ on a Riemannian manifold $M$, I prove that the $ϕ$--critical submanifolds with nonzero critical value are minimal submanifolds. I also show that the $ϕ$--critical submanifolds are precisely the integral manifolds of a $\mathscr{C}^\infty(M)$--linear subspace $\sP \subset Ω^p(M)$. In particular, the calibrated submanifolds are necessarily integral submanifolds of the system. (Examples of parallel calibrations include the special Lagrangian calibration on Calabi-Yau manifolds, (co)associative calibrations on $G_2$--manifolds, and the Cayley calibration …
In this paper, via a new Hardy type inequality, we establish some cohomology vanishing theorems for free boundary compact submanifolds $M^n$ with $n\geq2$ immersed in the Euclidean unit ball $\mathbb{B}^{n+k}$ under one of the pinching conditions $|Φ|^2\leq C$, $|A|^2\leq \widetilde{C}$, or $|Φ|\leq R(p,|H|)$, where $A$ $(Φ)$ is the (traceless) second fundamental form, $H$ is the mean curvature, $C,\widetilde{C}$ are positive constants and $R(p,|H|)$ is a positive function. In particular, we remove the condition on the flatness of the normal bundle, solving the first question, and partially an…
We describe a class of compact $G_2$ orbifolds constructed from non-symplectic involutions of K3 surfaces. Within this class, we identify a model for which there are infinitely many associative submanifolds contributing to the effective superpotential of M-theory compactifications. Under a chain of dualities, these can be mapped to F-theory on a Calabi-Yau fourfold, and we find that they are dual to an example studied by Donagi, Grassi and Witten. Finally, we give two different descriptions of our main example and the associative submanifolds as a twisted connected sum.
Using the Cartan-Kahler theory, and results on real algebraic structures, we prove two embedding theorems. First, the interior of a smooth, compact 3-manifold may be isometrically embedded into a G_2-manifold as an associative submanifold. Second, the interior of a smooth, compact 4-manifold K, whose double has a trivial bundle of self-dual 2-forms, may be isometrically embedded into a Spin(7)-manifold as a Cayley submanifold. Along the way, we also show that Bochner's Theorem on real analytic approximation of smooth differential forms, can be obtained using real algebraic tools developed by A…
Using the stress energy tensor, we establish some monotonicity formulae for vector bundle-valued p-forms satisfying the conservation law, provided that the base Riemannian (resp. Kähler) manifolds poss some real (resp. complex) p-exhaustion functions. Vanishing theorems follow immediately from the monotonicity formulae under suitable growth conditions on the energy of the p-forms. As an application, we establish a monotonicity formula for the Ricci form of a Kähler manifold of constant scalar curvature and then get a growth condition to derive the Ricci flatness of the Kähler manifold. In part…
H-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in general Kähler manifolds generalize special Lagrangian submanifolds in Calabi-Yau manifolds. In this paper we will use the deformation theory of H-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in Kähler manifolds to construct minimal Lagrangian torus in certain Kähler-Einstein manifolds with negative first Chern class.
The $L^2$-metric or Fubini-Study metric on the non-linear Grassmannian of all submanifolds of type $M$ in a Riemannian manifold $(N,g)$ induces geodesic distance 0. We discuss another metric which involves the mean curvature and shows that its geodesic distance is a good topological metric. The vanishing phenomenon for the geodesic distance holds also for all diffeomorphism groups for the $L^2$-metric.

We provide a significant extension of the twisted connected sum construction of G_2-manifolds, i.e. Riemannian 7-manifolds with holonomy group G_2, first developed by Kovalev; along the way we address some foundational questions at the heart of the twisted connected sum construction. Some of the main contributions of the paper are: (i) We correct, clarify and extend several aspects of the K3 "matching problem" that occurs as a key step in the twisted connected sum construction. (ii) We show that the large class of asymptotically cylindrical Calabi-Yau 3-folds built from semi-Fano 3-folds (a su…
In G2 manifolds, 3-dimensional associative submanifolds (instantons) play a role similar to J-holomorphic curves in symplectic geometry. In [21], instantons in G2 manifolds were constructed from regular J-holomorphic curves in coassociative submanifolds. In this exposition paper, after reviewing the background of G2 geometry, we explain the main ingredients in the proofs in [21]. We also construct new examples of instantons.
This paper is a continuation of math.DG/0408005. We first construct special Lagrangian submanifolds of the Ricci-flat Stenzel metric (of holonomy SU(n)) on the cotangent bundle of S^n by looking at the conormal bundle of appropriate submanifolds of S^n. We find that the condition for the conormal bundle to be special Lagrangian is the same as that discovered by Harvey-Lawson for submanifolds in R^n in their pioneering paper. We also construct calibrated submanifolds in complete metrics with special holonomy G_2 and Spin(7) discovered by Bryant and Salamon on the total spaces of appropriate bun…
In this paper, we will show vanishing theorem of $p$ harmonic $1$ form on submanifold $M$ in $ \bar{M} $ whose BiRic curvature satisfying $ \overline{\mathrm{BiRic}}^a \geq Φ_a(H,S) $. As an corollary, we can get the corresponding theorem for $ p $ harmonic function and $ p $ harmonic map. We also investigate the finiteness problem of $p$ harmonic $1$ form on submanifold $M$ in $ \bar{M} $ whose BiRic curvature satisfying $ \overline{\mathrm{BiRic}}^a \geq -k^2 $.
Let $H^p(L^2(M))$ be the space of all $L^2$-harmonic $p$-forms $(2\leq p\leq n-2)$ on complete submanifolds $M$ with flat normal bundle in spheres. In this paper, we first show that $H^p(L^2(M))$ is trivial if the total curvature of $M$ is less than a positive constant depending only on $n$. Second, we show that the dimension of $H^p(L^2(M))$ is finite if the total curvature of $M$ is finite. The vanishing theorem is a generalized version of Gan-Zhu-Fang theorem and the finiteness theorem is an extension of Zhu-Fang theorem.
We find Weitzenböck formula for the Fueter-Dirac operator which controls the infinitesimal deformations of an associative submanifold in a $7$--manifold with a $G_2$--structure. We establish a vanishing theorem to conclude rigidity under some positivity assumptions on curvature, which are particularly mild in the nearly parallel case. As applications, we give a different proof of rigidity for one of Lotay's associatives in the round $7$-sphere from those given by Kawai. We also provide simpler proofs of previous results by Gayet for the Bryant-Salamon metric. Finally, we obtain an original exa…
We prove that certain Riemannian manifolds can be isometrically embedded inside Calabi-Yau manifolds. For example we prove that given any real-analytic one parameter family of Riemannian metrics $g_t$ on a 3-dimensional manifold $Y$ with volume form independent of $t$ and with a real-analytic family of nowhere vanishing harmonic one forms $θ_t$, then $(Y, g_t)$ can be realized as a family of special Lagrangian submanifolds of a Calabi-Yau manifold $X$. We also prove that certain principal torus bundles can be equivariantly and isometrically embedded inside Calabi-Yau manifolds with torus actio…
We establish a gluing theorem for solutions of a Yamabe problem for manifolds with boundary studied by Escobar in the 90's. Given two scalar-flat Riemannian manifolds whose boundary has zero mean curvature and sharing a submanifold $K$, we produce the generalized connected sum along $K$. On this third manifold we produce a family of scalar-flat metrics with small, constant mean curvature on the boundary which are close to the original metrics in the $C^2$ sense. Under extra geometric conditions on the original manifolds, we can arrange for this family to also have vanishing mean curvature on t…
We show that a small neighborhood of a closed symplectic submanifold in a geometrically bounded aspherical symplectic manifold has non-vanishing symplectic homology. As a consequence, we establish the existence of contractible closed characteristics on any thickening of the boundary of the neighborhood. When applied to twisted geodesic flows on compact symplectically aspherical manifolds, this implies the existence of contractible periodic orbits for a dense set of low energy values.
In this paper we study the geometry of manifolds with vector cross product and its complexification. First we develop the theory of instantons and branes and study their deformations. For example they are (i) holomorphic curves and Lagrangian submanifolds in symplectic manifolds and (ii) associative submanifolds and coassociative submanifolds in G_2-manifolds. Second we classify Kahler manifolds with the complex analog of vector cross product, namely they are Calabi-Yau manifolds and hyperkahler manifolds. Furthermore we study instantons, Neumann branes and Dirichlet branes on these manifolds.…
In this paper, we show several vanishing type theorems for $p$-harmonic $\ell$-forms on Riemannian manifolds ($p\geq2$). First of all, we consider complete non-compact immersed submanifolds $M^n$ of ${N}^{n+m}$ with flat normal bundle, we prove that any $p$-harmonic $\ell$-forms on $M$ is trivial if $N$ has pure curvature tensor and $M$ satisfies some geometric condition. Then, we obtain a vanishing theorem on Riemannian manifolds with weighted Poincaré inequality. Final, we investigate complete simply connected, locally conformally flat Riemannian manifolds $M$ and point out that there is no …
n this paper we define an invariant of a pair of 6 dimensional symplectic %optional manifold with vanishing 1st Chern class and its Lagrangian submanifold with vanishing Maslov index. This invariant is a function on the set of the path connected components of the bounding cochains (solution of A infinity version of Maurer-Cartan equation of the filtered A infinity algebra associated to the Lagrangian submanifold). In the case when the Lagrangian submanifold is a rational homology sphere, it becomes a numerical invariant. This invariant depends on the choice of almost complex structure. The way…
We introduce a homology theory whose Euler characteristics counts ASD bundles over four dimensional co-associative submanifolds in (almost) G_2 manifolds. As a TQFT, in relative situations, we have the Fukaya-Floer category of Lagrangians intersection in the moduli space of special Lagrangian submanifolds in CY threefolds.
We show that there exist infinitely many pairwise distinct non-closed G_2-manifolds (some of which have holonomy full G_2) such that they admit co-oriented contact structures and have co-oriented contact submanifolds which are also associative. Along the way, we prove that there exists a tubular neighborhood N of every orientable three-submanifold Y of an orientable seven-manifold with spin structure such that for every co-oriented contact structure on Y, N admits a co-oriented contact structure such that Y is a contact submanifold of N. Moreover, we construct infinitely many pairwise distinct…
In this paper, we prove that there exists a universal constant $C$, depending only on positive integers $n\geq 3$ and $p\leq n-1$, such that if $M^n$ is a compact free boundary submanifold of dimension $n$ immersed in the Euclidean unit ball $\mathbb{B}^{n+k}$ whose size of the traceless second fundamental form is less than $C$, then the $p$th cohomology group of $M^n$ vanishes. Also, employing a different technique, we obtain a rigidity result for compact free boundary surfaces minimally immersed in the unit ball $\mathbb{B}^{2+k}$.
In this article, we summarize our recent results on the study of manifolds with special holonomy via the Frölicher-Nijenhuis bracket. This bracket enables us to define the Frölicher-Nijenhuis cohomologies which are analogues of the $d^c$ and the Dolbeault cohomologies in Kähler geometry, and assigns an $L_\infty$-algebra to each associative submanifold. We provide several concrete computations of the Frölicher-Nijenhuis cohomology.
We construct a gauge fixed action for topological membranes on $G_2$-manifold such that its bosonic part is the standard membrane theory in a particular gauge. We prove that quantum mechanically the path-integral in this gauge localizes on associative submanifolds. Moreover on $M\times S^1$ the theory naturally reduces to the standard A-model on Calabi-Yau manifold and to a membrane theory localized on special Lagrangian submanifolds. We discuss some properties of topological membrane theory on $G_2$-manifolds. We also generalize our construction to topological $p$--branes on special manifolds…
We study long wave limits for general Schrodinger maps systems into Kahler manifolds with a constraining potential vanishing on a Lagrangian submanifold. We obtain KdV type systems set on the tangent space of the submanifold. Our general theory is applied to study the long wave limit of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, and of the Landau-Lifshitz systems for ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic chains.
We remark on two different free-boundary problems for holomorphic curves in nearly-Kähler 6-manifolds. First, we observe that a holomorphic curve in a geodesic ball $B$ of the round 6-sphere that meets $\partial B$ orthogonally must be totally geodesic. Consequently, we obtain rigidity results for reflection-invariant holomorphic curves in $\mathbb{S}^6$ and associative cones in $\mathbb{R}^7$. Second, we consider holomorphic curves with boundary on a Lagrangian submanifold in a strict nearly-Kähler 6-manifold. By deriving a suitable second variation formula for area, we observe a topological …
