Dark energy observations may be explained within general relativity using an inhomogeneous Hubble-scale depression in the matter density and accompanying curvature, which evolves naturally out of an Einstein-de Sitter (EdS) model. We present a simple parameterization of a void which can reproduce concordance model distances to arbitrary accuracy, but can parameterize away from this to give a smooth density profile everywhere. We show how the Hubble constant is not just a nuisance parameter in inhomogeneous models because it affects the shape of the distance-redshift relation. Independent Hubble-rate data from age estimates can in principle serve to break the degeneracy between concordance and void models, but the data is not yet able to achieve this. Using the latest Constitution supernova dataset we show that robust limits can be placed on the size of a void which is roughly independent of its shape. However, the sharpness of the profile at the origin cannot be well constrained due to supernova being dominated by peculiar velocities in the local Universe. We illustrate our results using some recently proposed diagnostics for the Friedmann models.
In this paper, we analysed the halos and voids properties of a GR-based N-body simulation carried out at redshifts z= 0.0 and z= 0.8 as differences between dynamical dark energy models (namely PL and CPL) with respect to LCDM. Analysing the halos demonstrates that both models, PL and CPL, behave like LCDM, despite the velocity dispersion of halos was more sensitive to the dynamical dark energy model. In addition, a void finder was developed to extract the properties of voids from simulated data. Further statistical model on voids confirms that the PL model produces larger voids. In summary, ou…
How do observed voids relate to the underlying dark matter distribution? To examine the spatial distribution of dark matter contained within voids identified in galaxy surveys, we apply Halo Occupation Distribution models representing sparsely and densely sampled galaxy surveys to a high-resolution N-body simulation. We compare these galaxy voids to voids found in the halo distribution, low-resolution dark matter, and high-resolution dark matter. We find that voids at all scales in densely sampled surveys - and medium- to large-scale voids in sparse surveys - trace the same underdensities as d…
Two possible explanations for the type SNe Ia supernovae observations are a nonlinear, underdense void embedded in a matter-dominated Einstein-de Sitter spacetime or dark energy in the $Λ$CDM model. Both of these alternatives are faced with Copernican fine-tuning problems. A case is made for the void scenario that avoids introducing undetected dark energy.
In this work we analyse the properties of cosmic voids in standard and coupled dark energy cosmologies. Using large numerical simulations, we investigate the effects produced by the dark energy coupling on three statistics: the filling factor, the size distribution and the stacked profiles of cosmic voids. We find that the bias of the tracers of the density field used to identify the voids strongly influences the properties of the void catalogues, and, consequently, the possibility of using the identified voids as a probe to distinguish coupled dark energy models from the standard $Λ$CDM cosmo…
In this paper, we present the effects of dark energy perturbation on the formation and abundance of cosmic voids. We consider dark energy to be a fluid with a negative pressure characterised by a constant equation of state w and speed of sound $c^2_s$. By solving fluid equations for two components, namely, dark matter and dark energy fluids, we quantify the effects of dark energy perturbation on the sizes of top-hat voids. We also explore the effects on the size distribution of voids based on the excursion set theory. We confirm that dark energy perturbation negligibly affects the size evoluti…
We present a comparison of void properties between the standard model of cosmology, $Λ$ Cold Dark Matter ($Λ$CDM), and two alternative cosmological models with evolving and interacting dark sectors: a quintessence model ($ϕ$CDM) and a Coupled Dark Matter-Dark Energy (CDE) model. Using $N$-body simulations of these models, we derive several measures of void statistics and properties, including distributions of void volume, ellipticity, prolateness, and average density. We find that the volume distribution derived from the CDE simulation deviates from the volume distribution derived from the $Λ$…
What do we know about voids in the dark matter distribution given the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and assuming the $Λ\mathrm{CDM}$ model? Recent application of the Bayesian inference algorithm BORG to the SDSS Data Release 7 main galaxy sample has generated detailed Eulerian and Lagrangian representations of the large-scale structure as well as the possibility to accurately quantify corresponding uncertainties. Building upon these results, we present constrained catalogs of voids in the Sloan volume, aiming at a physical representation of dark matter underdensities and at the alleviation o…
We compare the evolution of voids formed under the standard cosmological model and two alternative cosmological models. The two models are a quintessence model ($ϕ$CDM) and a Coupled Dark Matter-Dark Energy (CDE) model, both of which have evolving and interacting dark sectors. From $N$-body adiabatic hydrodynamical simulations of these models, we measure the statistics and quantify the properties of voids over the redshift range $z=1.5-12$: these include their population size, volumes, shapes and average densities. We find that the latter property has potential as a probe of cosmology, particu…
Warm dark matter (WDM) has been proposed as an alternative to cold dark matter (CDM), to resolve issues such as the apparent lack of satellites around the Milky Way. Even if WDM is not the answer to observational issues, it is essential to constrain the nature of the dark matter. The effect of WDM on haloes has been extensively studied, but the small-scale initial smoothing in WDM also affects the present-day cosmic web and voids. It suppresses the cosmic "sub-web" inside voids, and the formation of both void haloes and subvoids. In $N$-body simulations run with different assumed WDM masses, w…
Taking N-body simulations with volumes and particle densities tuned to match the SDSS DR7 spectroscopic main sample, we assess the ability of current void catalogs (e.g., Sutter et al. 2012b) to distinguish a model of coupled dark matter-dark energy from ΛCDM cosmology using properties of cosmic voids. Identifying voids with the VIDE toolkit, we find no statistically significant differences in the ellipticities, but find that coupling produces a population of significantly larger voids, possibly explaining the recent result of Tavasoli et al. (2013). In addition, we use the universal density p…
We test a theoretical description of the void size distribution function against direct estimates from halo catalogues of the DEMNUni suite of large cosmological simulations. Besides standard $Λ$CDM, we consider deviations of the dark energy equation of state from $w=-1$, corresponding to four combinations in the popular Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parametrisation: $w_0=-0.9;-1.1$, $w_a=-0.3;0.3$. The theoretical void size function model, relying on the Sheth & van de Weygaert double barrier excursion set formalism, provides an accurate description of the simulation measurements for the differe…
Using cosmological $N$-body simulation which coevolves cold dark matter (CDM) and neutrino particles, we discover the local effect of massive neutrinos on the spatial distribution of CDM halos, reflected on properties of the Delaunay Triangulation (DT) voids. Smaller voids are generally in regions with higher neutrino abundance and so their surrounding halos are impacted by a stronger neutrino free streaming. This makes the voids larger (surrounding halos being washed outward the void center). On the contrary, larger voids are generally in regions with lower neutrino abundance and so their sur…
The Standard Cosmological Model assumes that more than 85\% of matter is in the form of collisionless and pressureless dark matter. Unstable decaying dark matter has been proposed in the literature as an extension to the standard cold dark matter model. In this paper we investigate a scenario when dark matter decays and the resultant particle moves with respect to the dark matter. A covariant hydrodynamical model is developed in which the decay is modeled by the transfer of energy-momentum between two dark dust fluid components. We parameterise the model in terms of the decay rate $Γ$ and inje…
The cosmological constant is estimated by considering the surface tension of supervoids in a void-dominated cosmic fluid by which we can get a possible source of dark energy. Looking at voids as bubbles, we define the concept of surface tension which is shown to have an almost constant value for supervoids that are enclosed by superclusters. The surface tensions of voids are computed by dimensional method for galaxies and superclusters with different values for each group. At large scale which vast voids are dominant the positive cosmological constants obtained of order $ (\simeq+10^{-52} {\rm…
The possibility that we live in a special place in the universe, close to the center of a large, radially inhomogeneous void, has attracted attention recently as an alternative to dark energy or modified gravity to explain the accelerating universe. We show that the distribution of orientations of galaxy pairs can be used to test the Copernican principle that we are not in a central or special region of Universe. The popular void models can not fit both the latest type Ia supernova, cosmic microwave background data and the distribution of orientations of galaxy pairs simultaneously. Our result…
A signature of the dark energy equation of state may be observed in the shape of voids. We estimate the constraints on cosmological parameters that would be determined from the ellipticity distribution of voids from future spectroscopic surveys already planned for the study of large scale structure. The constraints stem from the sensitivity of the distribution of ellipticity to the cosmological parameters through the variance of fluctuations of the density field smoothed at some length scale. This length scale can be chosen to be of the order of the comoving radii of voids at very early times …
We show that the number of observed voids in galaxy redshift surveys is a sensitive function of the equation of state of dark energy. Using the Fisher matrix formalism we find the error ellipses in the $w_0-w_a$ plane when the equation of state of dark energy is assumed to be of the form $w_{CPL}(z)=w_0 +w_a z/(1+z)$. We forecast the number of voids to be observed with the ESA Euclid satellite and the NASA WFIRST mission, taking into account updated details of the surveys to reach accurate estimates of their power. The theoretical model for the forecast of the number of voids is based on match…
The formation of large voids in the Cosmic Web from the initial adiabatic cosmological perturbations of space-time metric, density and velocity of matter is investigated in cosmological model with the dynamical dark energy accelerating expansion of the Universe. It is shown that the negative density perturbations with the initial radius of about 50 Mpc in comoving to the cosmological background coordinates and the amplitude corresponding to the r.m.s. temperature fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background lead to the formation of voids with the density contrast up to $-$0.9, maximal pecul…
We study the spherical evolution model for voids in $Λ$CDM, where the evolution of voids is governed by dark energy at an earlier time than that for the whole universe or in overdensities. We show that the presence of dark energy suppresses the growth of peculiar velocities, causing void shell-crossing to occur at progressively later epochs as $Ω_Λ$ increases. We apply the spherical model to evolve the initial conditions of N-body simulated voids and compare the resulting final void profiles. We find that the model is successful in tracking the evolution of voids with radii greater than $30 h^…
Aims: We assess the sensitivity of void shapes to the nature of dark energy that was pointed out in recent studies. We investigate whether or not void shapes are useable as an observational probe in galaxy redshift surveys. We focus on the evolution of the mean void ellipticity and its underlying physical cause. Methods: We analyse the morphological properties of voids in five sets of cosmological N-body simulations, each with a different nature of dark energy. Comparing voids in the dark matter distribution to those in the halo population, we address the question of whether galaxy redshift su…
We quantify the effects of the voids known to exist in the Universe upon the reconstruction of the dark energy equation of state $w$. We show that the effect can start to be comparable with some of the other errors taken into account when analysing supernova data, depending strongly upon the low redshift cut-off used in the sample. For the supernova data alone, the error induced in the reconstruction of $w$ is much larger than the percent level. When the Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations and the CMB data are included in the fit, the effect of the voids upon the determination of $w$ is much lessen…
The Vainshtein mechanism, present in many models of gravity, is very effective at screening dark matter halos such that the fifth force is negligible and general relativity is recovered within their Vainshtein radii. Vainshtein screening is independent of halo mass and environment, in contrast to e.g. chameleon screening, making it difficult to test. However, our previous studies have found that the dark matter particles in filaments, walls, and voids are not screened by the Vainshtein mechanism. We therefore investigate whether cosmic voids, identified as local density minima using a watershe…
We apply the BORG algorithm to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 main sample galaxies. The method results in the physical inference of the initial density field at a scale factor $a~=~10^{-3}$, evolving gravitationally to the observed density field at a scale factor $a~=~1$, and provides an accurate quantification of corresponding uncertainties. Building upon these results, we generate a set of constrained realizations of the present large-scale dark matter distribution. As a physical illustration, we apply a void identification algorithm to them. In this fashion, we access voids def…

The standard model of cosmology is dominated - at the present epoch - by dark energy. Its voids are rigid and Newtonian within a relativistic background. The model prevents them from becoming hyperbolic. Observations of rapid velocity flows out of voids are normally interpreted within the standard model that is rigid in comoving coordinates, instead of allowing the voids' density parameter to drop below critical and their curvature to become negative. Isn't it time to advance beyond nineteenth century physics and relegate dark energy back to the "no significant evidence" box?
Combining galaxy cluster and void abundances breaks the degeneracy between mean matter density $Ω_{\rm m}$ and power spectrum normalization $σ_8$. In a first for voids, we constrain $Ω_{\rm m} = 0.21 \pm 0.10$ and $σ_8 = 0.95 \pm 0.21$ for a flat $Λ$CDM universe, using extreme-value statistics on the claimed largest cluster and void. The Planck-consistent results detect dark energy with two objects, independently of other dark energy probes. Cluster-void studies also offer complementarity in scale, density, and non-linearity - of particular interest for testing modified-gravity models.
Observational studies show that voids are prominent features of the large scale structure of the present day Universe. Even though their emerging from the primordial density perturbations and evolutionary patterns differ from dark matter halos, N-body simulations and theoretical models have shown that voids also merge together to form large void structures. In this study, following Sheth & van de Weygaert (2004), we formulate an analytical approximate description of the hierarchical void evolution of growing voids by adopting the halo merging algorithm given by Lacey & Cole (1993) in the Einst…
Using cosmic voids to probe the growth rate of cosmic structure, and hence the nature of dark energy, is particularly interesting in the context of modified gravity theories that rely on the screening mechanism. In this work we improve the modelling of redshift-space distortions around voids in the dark matter density field, and thus reduce systematic errors in the derivation of cosmological parameters. We also show how specific types of voids can be used to better probe the growth rate, using a flexible void finder. We apply our results to test for a quintessence type of dark energy vs. a LCD…
We investigate the formation, growth, merger history, movement, and destruction of cosmic voids detected via the watershed transform code VIDE in a cosmological N-body dark matter ΛCDM simulation. By adapting a method used to construct halo merger trees, we are able to trace individual voids back to their initial appearance and record the merging and evolution of their progenitors at high redshift. For the scales of void sizes captured in our simulation, we find that the void formation rate peaks at scale factor 0.3, which coincides with a growth in the void hierarchy and the emergence of dark…
Using high-resolution simulations within the Cold and Warm Dark Matter models we study the evolution of small scale structure in the Local Volume, a sphere of 8 Mpc radius around the Local Group. We compare the observed spectrum of mini-voids in the Local Volume with the spectrum of mini-voids determined from the simulations. We show that the \LWDM model can easily explain both the observed spectrum of mini-voids and the presence of low-mass galaxies observed in the Local Volume, provided that all haloes with circular velocities greater than 20 km/s host galaxies. On the contrary within the LC…

We propose an alternative physical mechanism to explain the observed accelerated expansion of the Universe based on the configuration entropy of the cosmic web and its evolution. We show that the sheets, filaments and clusters in the cosmic web act as sinks whereas the voids act as the sources of information. The differential entropy of the cosmic velocity field increases with time and also acts as a source of entropy. The growth of non-linear structures and the emergence of the cosmic web may lead to a situation where the overall dissipation rate of information at the sinks are about to domin…
Two recently proposed techniques, involving the measurement of the cosmic parallax and redshift drift, provide novel ways of directing probing (over a time-span of several years) the background metric of the universe and therefore shed light on the dark energy conundrum. The former makes use of upcoming high-precision astrometry measurements to either observe or put tight constraints on cosmological anisotropy for off-center observers, while the latter employs high-precision spectroscopy to give an independent test of the present acceleration of the universe. In this paper, we show that both m…
We analyse the evolution of cosmological perturbations which leads to the formation of large isolated voids in the Universe. We assume that initial perturbations are spherical and all components of the Universe (radiation, matter and dark energy) are continuous media with perfect fluid energy--momentum tensors, which interact only gravitationally. Equations of the evolution of perturbations for every component in the comoving to cosmological background reference frame are obtained from equations of energy and momentum conservation and Einstein's ones and are integrated numerically. Initial con…

Galaxies and their dark matter halos populate a complicated filamentary network around large, nearly empty regions known as cosmic voids. Cosmic voids are usually identified in spectroscopic galaxy surveys, where 3D information about the large-scale structure of the Universe is available. Although an increasing amount of photometric data is being produced, its potential for void studies is limited since photometric redshifts induce line-of-sight position errors of $\sim50$ Mpc/$h$ or more that can render many voids undetectable. In this paper we present a new void finder designed for photometr…
We analyze a (120 h^{-1} Mpc)^3 adaptive mesh refinement hydrodynamic simulation that contains a higher-resolution 31 x 31 x 35 h^{-3} Mpc subvolume centered on a ~30 Mpc diameter void. Our detailed ~1 kpc resolution allows us to identify 1300 galaxies within this void to a limiting halo mass of ~10^{10} M_sun. Nearly 1000 galaxies are found to be in underdense regions, with 300 galaxies residing in regions less than half the mean density of the simulation volume. We construct mock observations of the stellar and gas properties of these systems, and reproduce the range of colors and luminositi…
We explore voids in dark matter and halo fields from simulations of $Λ$CDM and Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ models. In $f(R)$ gravity, dark matter void abundances are greater than that of general relativity (GR). However, when using haloes to identify voids, the differences of void abundances become much smaller, but can still be told apart, in principle, at the 2, 6 and 14 $σ$ level for the $f(R)$ model parameter amplitudes of $|f_{R0}|=10^{-6}$, $10^{-5}$ and $10^{-4}$. In contrast, the abundance of large voids found using haloes in $f(R)$ gravity is lower than in GR. The more efficient halo formation …
Cosmic voids are promising tools for cosmological tests due to their sensitivity to dark energy, modified gravity and alternative cosmological scenarios. Most previous studies in the literature of void properties use cosmological N-body simulations of dark matter (DM) particles that ignore the potential effect of baryonic physics. Using a spherical underdensity finder, we analyse voids using the mass field and subhalo tracers in the EAGLE simulations, which follow the evolution of galaxies in a $\rmΛ$ cold dark matter Universe with state-of-the-art subgrid models for baryonic processes in a $(…
Understanding the internal structure and spatial distribution of cosmic voids is crucial when considering them as probes of cosmology. We present recent advances in modeling void density- and velocity-profiles in real space, as well as void two-point statistics in redshift space, by examining voids identified via the watershed transform in state-of-the-art $Λ$CDM n-body simulations and mock galaxy catalogs. The simple and universal characteristics that emerge from these statistics indicate the self-similarity of large-scale structure and suggest cosmic voids to be among the most pristine objec…
We present a purely geometrical method for probing the expansion history of the Universe from the observation of the shape of stacked voids in spectroscopic redshift surveys. Our method is an Alcock-Paczynski (AP) test based on the average sphericity of voids posited on the local isotropy of the Universe. It works by comparing the temporal extent of cosmic voids along the line of sight with their angular, spatial extent. We describe the algorithm that we use to detect and stack voids in redshift shells on the light cone and test it on mock light cones produced from N-body simulations. We estab…
A modification of the Press-Schechter theory allowing for presence of a background large-scale structure (LSS) - a supercluster or a void, is proposed. The LSS is accounted as the statistical constraints in form of linear functionals of the random overdensity field. The deviation of the background density within the LSS is interpreted in a pseudo-cosmological sense. Using the constraints formalism may help us to probe non-trivial spatial statistics of haloes, e.g. edge and shape effects on boundaries of the superclusters and voids. Parameters of the constraints are connected to features of the…
Galaxy surveys have shown that luminous galaxies are mainly distributed in large filaments and galaxy clusters. The remaining large volumes are virtually devoid of luminous galaxies. This is in concordance with the formation of the large-scale structure in Universe as derived from cosmological simulations. However, the numerical results indicate that cosmological voids are abundantly populated with dark matter haloes which may in principle host dwarf galaxies. Observational efforts have in contrast revealed, that voids are apparently devoid of dwarf galaxies. We investigate the formation of dw…
We present a systematic study of the cosmic variance that existed in the formation of first stars and galaxies. We focus on the cosmic variance induced by the large-scale density and velocity environment engraved at the epoch of recombination. The density environment is predominantly determined by the dark-matter overdensity, and the velocity environment by the dark matter-baryon streaming velocity. Toward this end, we introduce a new cosmological initial condition generator BCCOMICS, which solves the quasi-linear evolution of small-scale perturbations under the large-scale density and streami…
Spherically symmetric, static model of the cosmological voids is constructed in the framework of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov equation with the cosmological constant. Extension of the Tooper result (dimensionless form of the TOV equation) is provided for non-zero $Λ$. Then, the equation is simplified in $α\to 0$, $λ\to 0$, $λ/α= const$ regime, suitable for largest structures in $Λ$-dominated universe. Voids are treated as an underdensity regions in the static Einstein universe. Both overdensity and underdensity (relative to static universe) solutions exist. They are identified with standard a…
Void models provide a possible explanation of the "accelerated expansion" of the Universe without dark energy. To make the conventional void models more realistic, we allow the void, an underdense region around us, to be anisotropic and consider an average of the distance-redshift relations over the solid angle subtended at the observer. We first show that after taking the average of a form of the optical scalar equation (distance equation), the effective distance equation we obtain coincides with the one for the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi universe with a Dyer-Roeder-like extension. We then numeric…
We investigate the basic properties of voids from high resolution, cosmological N-body simulations of Λ-dominated cold dark matter (ΛCDM) models, in order to compare with the analytical model of Sheth and van de Weygaert (SvdW) for void statistics. For the subsample of five dark matter simulations in the ΛCDM cosmology with box sizes ranging from 1000 Mpc/h to 8 Mpc/h, we find that the standard void-in-cloud effect is too simplified to explain several properties of identified small voids in simulations. (i) The number density of voids is found to be larger than the prediction of the analytical…
We study the redshift drift, i.e., the time derivative of the cosmological redshift in the Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) solution in which the observer is assumed to be located at the symmetry center. This solution has often been studied as an anti-Copernican universe model to explain the acceleration of cosmic volume expansion without introducing the concept of dark energy. One of decisive differences between LTB universe models and Copernican universe models with dark energy is believed to be the redshift drift. The redshift drift is negative in all known LTB universe models, whereas it is pos…
We present measurements of the number density of voids in the dark matter distribution from a series of N-body simulations of a ΛCDM cosmology. We define voids as spherical regions of ρ_v = 0.2ρ_m around density minima in order to relate our results to the predicted abundances using the excursion set formalism. Using a linear underdensity of δ_v = -2.7, from a spherical evolution model, we find that a volume conserving model, which does not conserve number density in the mapping from the linear to nonlinear regime, matches the measured abundance to within 16% for a range of void radii 1< r(Mpc…
Lemaître - Tolman (L--T) toy models with a central observer have been used to study the effect of large scale inhomogeneities on the SN Ia dimming. Claims that a giant void is mandatory to explain away dark energy in this framework are currently dominating. Our aim is to show that L-T models exist that reproduce a few features of the $Λ$CDM model, but do not contain the giant cosmic void. We propose to use two sets of data - the angular diameter distance together with the redshift-space mass-density and the angular diameter distance together with the expansion rate - both defined on the past n…
We test the opacity of a void Universe to TeV energy gamma rays having obtained the extra-galactic background light in that Universe using a simple model and the observed constraints on the star formation rate history. We find that the void Universe has significantly more opacity than a Lambda-CDM Universe, putting it at odds with observations of BL-Lac objects. We argue that while this method of distinguishing between the two cosmologies contains uncertainties, it circumvents any debates over fine-tuning.
