dc magnetization and 31^P spin lattice relaxation rate in the polycrystalline sample of LaCoPO suggest a spin fluctuation dominated ferromagnetically ordered state. Moreover, NMR data clearly indicate a crossover from 2D to 3D spin fluctuations across T_C. In contrast to isotropic hyperfine field, H_hf at the 31^P site in LaFePO, H_hf is anisotropic in LaCoPO. The data of spin lattice relaxation rate also exhibit anisotropic spin fluctuation. The anisotropy vanishes near T_C.
The crossover from quasi free electron to small polaron in the Holstein model for a single electron is studied by means of both exact and self-consistent calculations in one dimension and on an infinite coordination lattice, in order to understand the role of dimensionality in such a crossover. We show that a small polaron ground-state occurs when both strong coupling ($λ>1$) and multiphonon ($α^2 >1$) conditions are fulfilled leading to different relevant coupling constants ($λ$) in adiabatic and ($α^2$) anti adiabatic region of the parameters space. We also show that the self-consistent calc…
We report magnetotransport properties of photogenerated electrons in undoped SrTiO$_3$ single crystals under ultraviolet illumination down to 2 K. By tuning the light intensity, the steady state carrier density can be controlled, while tuning the wavelength controls the effective electronic thickness by modulating the optical penetration depth. At short wavelengths, when the sheet conductance is close to the two-dimensional Mott minimum conductivity we have observed critical behavior characteristic of weak localization. Negative magnetoresistance at low magnetic field is highly anisotropic, in…
In this article we report on the experimental realization of dimensional crossover phenomena in the chain compound PrBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ using temperature, high magnetic fields and disorder as independent tuning parameters. In purer crystals of PrBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$, a highly anisotropic three-dimensional Fermi-liquid state develops at low temperatures. This metallic state is extremely susceptible to disorder however and localization rapidly sets in. We show, through quantitative comparison of the relevant energy scales, that this metal/insulator crossover occurs precisely when the scattering rate…
Using determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) simulations, we systematically study the doping dependence of the crossover from one to two dimensions and its impact on the magnetic properties of the Hubbard model. A square lattice of chains is used, in which the dimensionality can be tuned by varying the interchain coupling $t_\perp$. The dynamical spin structure factor and static quantities, such as the static spin susceptibility and nearest-neighbor spin correlation function, are characterized in the one- and two-dimensional limits as a benchmark. When the dimensionality is tuned between these…
Dimensionality reduction induced metal-insulator transitions in oxide heterostructures are usually coupled with structural and magnetic phase transitions, which complicate the interpretation of the underlying physics. Therefore, achieving isostructural MIT is of great importance for fundamental physics and even more for applications. Here, we report an isostructural metal-insulator transition driven by dimensional-crossover in spin-orbital coupled SrIrO3 films. By using in-situ pulsed laser deposition and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we synthesized and investigated the electronic…
The magnetism of magnetoelectric $S$ = 3/2 pyroxenes LiCrSi$_2$O$_6$ and LiCrGe$_2$O$_6$ is studied by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, neutron diffraction, as well as low-field and high-field magnetization measurements. In contrast with earlier reports, we find that the two compounds feature remarkably different, albeit non-frustrated magnetic models. In LiCrSi$_2$O$_6$, two relevant exchange integrals, $J_1 \simeq$ 9 K along the structural chains and $J_{\text{ic1}}$ $\simeq$ 2 K between the chains, form a 2D anisotropic honeycomb lattice. …
Correlations between electrons and the effective dimensionality are crucial factors that shape the properties of an interacting electron system. For example, the onsite Coulomb repulsion, U, may inhibit, or completely block the intersite electron hopping, t, and depending on the ratio U/t, a material may be a metal or an insulator. The correlation effects increase as the number of allowed dimensions decreases. In 3D systems, the low energy electronic states behave as quasiparticles (QP), while in 1D systems, even weak interactions break the quasiparticles into collective excitations. Dimension…
Magnetic frustration and low dimensionality can prevent long range magnetic order and lead to exotic correlated ground states. SrDy$_2$O$_4$ consists of magnetic Dy$^{3+}$ ions forming magnetically frustrated zig-zag chains along the c-axis and shows no long range order to temperatures as low as $T=60$ mK. We carried out neutron scattering and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements using powder and single crystals of SrDy$_2$O$_4$. Diffuse neutron scattering indicates strong one-dimensional (1D) magnetic correlations along the chain direction that can be qualitatively accounted for by the axi…
In the quasi-one-dimensional cuprate PrBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$, the Pr cations order antiferromagnetically at 17 K in zero field. Through a combination of magnetic susceptibility, torque magnetometry, specific heat and interchain transport measurements, the anisotropic temperature-magnetic field phase diagram associated with this ordering has been mapped out. A low-temperature spin-flop transition in the Pr sub-lattice is found to occur at the same magnetic field strength and orientation as a dimensional crossover in the ground state of the metallic CuO chains. This coincidence suggests that the spi…
Artificial crystals synthesized by atomic-scale epitaxy provides the ability to control the dimensions of the quantum phases and associated phase transitions via precise thickness modulation. In particular, reduction in dimensionality via quantized control of atomic layers is a powerful approach to revealing hidden electronic and magnetic phases. Here, we demonstrate a dimensionality-controlled and induced metal-insulator transition (MIT) in atomically designed superlattices by synthesizing a genuine two dimensional (2D) SrRuO3 crystal with highly suppressed charge transfer. The tendency to fe…
In low-dimensional systems with strong electronic correlations, the application of an ultrashort laser pulse often yields novel phases that are otherwise inaccessible. The central challenge in understanding such phenomena is to determine how dimensionality and many-body correlations together govern the pathway of a non-adiabatic transition. To this end, we examine a layered compound, 1T-TiSe$_2$, whose three-dimensional charge-density-wave (3D CDW) state also features exciton condensation due to strong electron-hole interactions. We find that photoexcitation suppresses the equilibrium 3D CDW w…
We present a full phase diagram for the one-dimensional (1D) to three-dimensional (3D) crossover of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in an attractive Hubbard model of 3D-coupled chains in a har- monic trap. We employ real-space dynamical mean-field theory which describes full local quantum fluctuations beyond the usual mean-field and local density approximation. We find strong dimensionality effects on the shell structure undergoing a crossover between distinctive quasi-1D and quasi-3D regimes. We predict an optimal regime for the FFLO state that is considerably extended to in…
Using numerical diagonalization we study the crossover among different random matrix ensembles [Poissonian, Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE), Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) and Gaussian Symplectic Ensemble (GSE)] realized in two different microscopic models. The specific diagnostic tool used to study the crossovers is the level spacing distribution. The first model is a one dimensional lattice model of interacting hard core bosons (or equivalently spin 1/2 objects) and the other a higher dimensional model of non-interacting particles with disorder and spin orbit coupling. We find that the p…
We investigate exotic paired states of spin-imbalanced Fermi gases in anisotropic lattices, tuning the dimension between one and three. We calculate the finite temperature phase diagram of the system using real-space dynamical mean-field theory in combination with the quantum Monte Carlo method. We find that regardless of the intermediate dimensions examined, the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state survives to reach about one third of the BCS critical temperature of the spin-density balanced case. We show how the gapless nature of the state found is reflected in the local spectral fu…
Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials offer unprecedented opportunities for fundamental physics and applied research in spintronics and magnonics. Beyond the pioneering studies on 2D CrI3 and Cr2Ge2Te6, this emerging field has expanded to 2D antiferromagnets exhibiting different spin anisotropies and textures. Of particular interest is the layered metamagnet CrSBr, a relatively air-stable semiconductor formed by antiferromagnetically-coupled ferromagnetic layers (Tc~150 K) that can be exfoliated down to the single-layer. It presents a complex magnetic behavior with a dynamic magnetic crossov…
Electronic orderings of charges, orbitals and spins are observed in many strongly correlated electron materials, and revealing their dynamics is a critical step toward understanding the underlying physics of important emergent phenomena. Here we use time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to probe the dynamics of antiferromagnetic spin ordering in the manganite Pr$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ following ultrafast photo-exitation. Our studies reveal a glass-like recovery of the spin ordering and a crossover in the dimensionality of the restoring interaction from quasi-1D at low pum…
We present magnetic susceptibility and electrical transport measurements of the highly anisotropic compound LaSb$_2$ observing a very broad transition into a clean, consistent with type-I, superconducting state with distinct features of 2 dimensionality. Application of hydrostatic pressure induces a 2- to 3-dimensional crossover evidenced by a reduced anisotropy and transition width. The superconducting transition appears phase fluctuation limited at ambient pressure with fluctuations observed for temperatures greater than 8 times the superconducting critical temperature.
We investigate the phase diagrams of the spin-orbital $d^9$ Kugel-Khomskii model for increasing system dimensionality: from the square lattice monolayer, via the bilayer to the cubic lattice. In each case we find strong competition between different types of spin and orbital order, with entangled spin-orbital phases at the crossover from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic correlations in the intermediate regime of Hund's exchange. These phases have various types of exotic spin order and are stabilized by effective interactions of longer range which follow from enhanced spin-orbital fluctuation…
We report on the observation of anti-ferromagnetic correlations of ultracold fermions in a variety of optical lattice geometries that are well described by the Hubbard model, including dimers, 1D chains, ladders, isolated and coupled honeycomb planes, as well as square and cubic lattices. The dependence of the strength of spin correlations on the specific geometry is experimentally studied by measuring the correlations along different lattice tunneling links, where a redistribution of correlations between the different lattice links is observed. By measuring the correlations in a crossover bet…
