We propose a new concept of modulated bipower variation for diffusion models with microstructure noise. We show that this method provides simple estimates for such important quantities as integrated volatility or integrated quarticity. Under mild conditions the consistency of modulated bipower variation is proven. Under further assumptions we prove stable convergence of our estimates with the optimal rate $n^{-{1}/{4}}$. Moreover, we construct estimates which are robust to finite activity jumps.
In this paper, we develop econometric tools to analyze the integrated volatility of the efficient price and the dynamic properties of microstructure noise in high-frequency data under general dependent noise. We first develop consistent estimators of the variance and autocovariances of noise using a variant of realized volatility. Next, we employ these estimators to adapt the pre-averaging method and derive a consistent estimator of the integrated volatility, which converges stably to a mixed Gaussian distribution at the optimal rate $n^{1/4}$. To refine the finite sample performance, we propo…
We introduce a statistical test for simultaneous jumps in the price of a financial asset and its volatility process. The proposed test is based on high-frequency data and is robust to market microstructure frictions. For the test, local estimators of volatility jumps at price jump arrival times are designed using a nonparametric spectral estimator of the spot volatility process. A simulation study and an empirical example with NASDAQ order book data demonstrate the practicability of the proposed methods and highlight the important role played by price volatility co-jumps.
For a semimartingale with jumps, we propose a new estimation method for integrated volatility, i.e., the quadratic variation of the continuous martingale part, based on the global jump filter proposed by Inatsugu and Yoshida [8]. To decide whether each increment of the process has jumps, the global jump filter adopts the upper $α$-quantile of the absolute increments as the threshold. This jump filter is called global since it uses all the observations to classify one increment. We give a rate of convergence and prove asymptotic mixed normality of the global realized volatility and its variant …
In this paper, we present the double smoothed nonparametric approach for infinitesimal conditional volatility of jump-diffusion model based on high frequency data. Under certain minimal conditions, we obtain the strong consistency and asymptotic normality for the estimator as the time span $T \rightarrow \infty$ and the sample interval $Δ_{n} \rightarrow 0.$ The procedure and asymptotic behavior can be applied for both null Harris recurrent and positive Harris recurrent processes.
The problem of integrated volatility estimation for the solution X of a stochastic differential equation with L{é}vy-type jumps is considered under discrete high-frequency observations in both short and long time horizon. We provide an asymptotic expansion for the integrated volatility that gives us, in detail, the contribution deriving from the jump part. The knowledge of such a contribution allows us to build an unbiased version of the truncated quadratic variation, in which the bias is visibly reduced. In earlier results the condition $β$ > 1 2(2--$α$) on $β$ (that is such that (1/n) $β$ is…
We first revisit the problem of estimating the spot volatility of an Itô semimartingale using a kernel estimator. We prove a Central Limit Theorem with optimal convergence rate for a general two-sided kernel. Next, we introduce a new pre-averaging/kernel estimator for spot volatility to handle the microstructure noise of ultra high-frequency observations. We prove a Central Limit Theorem for the estimation error with an optimal rate and study the optimal selection of the bandwidth and kernel functions. We show that the pre-averaging/kernel estimator's asymptotic variance is minimal for exponen…
Volatility estimation based on high-frequency data is key to accurately measure and control the risk of financial assets. A Lévy process with infinite jump activity and microstructure noise is considered one of the simplest, yet accurate enough, models for financial data at high-frequency. Utilizing this model, we propose a "purposely misspecified" posterior of the volatility obtained by ignoring the jump-component of the process. The misspecified posterior is further corrected by a simple estimate of the location shift and re-scaling of the log likelihood. Our main result establishes a Bernst…
An extensive empirical literature documents a generally negative correlation, named the "leverage effect," between asset returns and changes of volatility. It is more challenging to establish such a return-volatility relationship for jumps in high-frequency data. We propose new nonparametric methods to assess and test for a discontinuous leverage effect --- i.e. a relation between contemporaneous jumps in prices and volatility. The methods are robust to market microstructure noise and build on a newly developed price-jump localization and estimation procedure. Our empirical investigation of si…
In this paper, we consider a one-dimensional diffusion process with jumps driven by a Hawkes process. We are interested in the estimations of the volatility function and of the jump function from discrete high-frequency observations in a long time horizon which remained an open question until now. First, we propose to estimate the volatility coefficient. For that, we introduce a truncation function in our estimation procedure that allows us to take into account the jumps of the process and estimate the volatility function on a linear subspace of L2(A) where A is a compact interval of R. We obt…
In this paper we consider an ergodic diffusion process with jumps whose drift coefficient depends on $μ$ and volatility coefficient depends on $σ$, two unknown parameters. We suppose that the process is discretely observed at the instants (t n i)i=0,...,n with $Δ$n = sup i=0,...,n--1 (t n i+1 -- t n i) $\rightarrow$ 0. We introduce an estimator of $θ$ := ($μ$, $σ$), based on a contrast function, which is asymptotically gaussian without requiring any conditions on the rate at which $Δ$n $\rightarrow$ 0, assuming a finite jump activity. This extends earlier results where a condition on the step …
This paper presents the nonparametric inference for nonlinear volatility functionals of general multivariate Itô semimartingales, in high-frequency and noisy setting. Pre-averaging and truncation enable simultaneous handling of noise and jumps. Second-order expansion reveals explicit biases and a pathway to bias correction. Estimators based on this framework achieve the optimal convergence rate. A class of stable central limit theorems are attained with estimable asymptotic covariance matrices. This paper form a basis for infill asymptotic results of, for example, the realized Laplace transfor…
Efficient Estimation of Stochastic Volatility Using Noisy Observations: A Multi-Scale Approach
The usage of a spot volatility estimate based on a volatility decomposition in a time-changed price-model according to the trading times is investigated. In this model clock-time volatility splits up into the product of tick-time volatility and trading intensity, which both can be estimated from data and contain valuable information. By inspecting these two curves individually we gain more insight into the cause and structure of volatility. Several examples are provided where the tick-time volatility curve is much smoother than the clock-time volatility curve meaning that the major part of flu…
In this paper, we propose a new threshold-kernel jump-detection method for jump-diffusion processes, which iteratively applies thresholding and kernel methods in an approximately optimal way to achieve improved finite-sample performance. We use the expected number of jump misclassifications as the objective function to optimally select the threshold parameter of the jump detection scheme. We prove that the objective function is quasi-convex and obtain a new second-order infill approximation of the optimal threshold in closed form. The approximate optimal threshold depends not only on the spot …
In this paper, we provide non-parametric statistical tools to test stationarity of microstructure noise in general hidden Ito semimartingales, and discuss how to measure liquidity risk using high frequency financial data. In particular, we investigate the impact of non-stationary microstructure noise on some volatility estimators, and design three complementary tests by exploiting edge effects, information aggregation of local estimates and high-frequency asymptotic approximation. The asymptotic distributions of these tests are available under both stationary and non-stationary assumptions, th…
