We discuss a two-fold extension of QED assuming the presence of strong external fields provided by an ultra-intense laser and noncommutativity of spacetime. While noncommutative effects leave the electron's intensity induced mass shift unchanged, the photons change significantly in character: they acquire a quasi-momentum that is no longer light-like. We study the consequences of this combined noncommutative strong-field effect for basic lepton-photon interactions.
QED perturbation theory in a background field has been conjectured to break down for sufficiently high field intensity. The high-intensity behavior of a field theory is however intertwined with its high-energy (UV) behavior. Here we show that a UV modification of QED changes the high-intensity behaviour of observables. Specifically we study non-linear Compton scattering in a constant crossed field in QED with an additional Pauli term. In the UV modified theory the cross section exhibits a faster power-law scaling with intensity than in ordinary QED.
Scattering processes in laser backgrounds are degenerate to the emission of unobservable photons collinear with the laser. We identify processes and observables for which such degeneracies factorise and exponentiate, obtaining the leading-order intensity dependence of these inclusive observables at high laser intensity, correct to all orders in the fine-structure constant (all loops, all emissions). The results show an exponential intensity dependence distinct from that predicted by the Narozhny-Ritus conjecture on the high-intensity behaviour of quantum electrodynamics in strong fields.
Up to date, quantum electrodynamics (QED) is the most precisely tested quantum field theory. Nevertheless, particularly in the high-intensity regime it predicts various phenomena that so far have not directly been accessible in all-optical experiments, such as photon-photon scattering phenomena induced by quantum vacuum fluctuations. Here, we focus on all-optical signatures of quantum vacuum effects accessible in the high-intensity regime of electromagnetic fields. We present an experimental setup giving rise to signal photons distinguishable from the background. This configuration is based on…
As a toy model for QED in strong background fields, we consider the impact of back-reaction and loop effects on scattering processes in quantum optics. We show that neglecting back-reaction misses qualitative and quantitative features of strong-field physics. We are able to study an analogue of the Narozhny-Ritus conjecture on the scaling of higher loop diagrams with intensity: we prove that there is no corresponding behaviour in our model. Implications for QED are identified and discussed.
This is a write-up of a short tutorial talk on high-intensity QED, video-presented at the 2021 annual Christmas meeting of the Central Laser Facility at Rutherford-Appleton Lab, UK. The first half consists of a largely historical introduction to (quantum) electrodynamics focussing on a few key concepts. This well-established theory is then compared to its strong-field generalisation when a high-intensity laser is present. Some supplementary material and a fair amount of references have been added.
The combination of energetic electron beams, delivered from conventional accelerators at a high repetition rate, and ultraintense lasers, makes it possible to perform precision measurements of strong-field QED. The LUXE collaboration aims to perform precision measurements of nonlinear Compton scattering and Breit-Wheeler pair creation in the transition from the perturbative to nonperturbative regimes. Here we present an overview of recent developments in the modelling of strong-field QED processes, which are needed to reach the required precision of a few percent for intensity parameters $0.1 …
Studies of strong field particle physics processes in electron/laser interactions and lepton collider interaction points are reviewed. These processes are defined by the high intensity of the electromagnetic fields involved and the need to take them into account as fully as possible. The main theoretical framework considered is the Furry picture. In this framework, the influence of a background electromagnetic field in the Lagrangian is calculated non perturbatively, involving exact solutions for quantised charged particles in the background field. These "dressed" particles go on to interact p…
The noncommutative QED (NCQED) has a non-Abelian nature due to the presence of 3- and 4-photon vertices in the lagrangian. Thus, NCQED predicts a new physics contribution to the $γγ\rightarrowγγ$ scattering already at the tree level. We have examined NCQED by studying the light-by-light process at the 14 TeV LHC with intact protons. Our results show that the NC scale up to $Λ_{\mathrm{NC}} = 1.65(1.35)$ TeV can be probed in the $pp\rightarrow p(γγ)p \rightarrow p'(γγ)p'$ collision for the time-space (space-space) NC parameters. These bounds are stronger than the limits that can be obtained in …
Processes occurring in the strong-field regime of QED are characterized by background electromagnetic fields of the order of the critical field $F_{cr}=m^2c^3/\hbar|e|$ in the rest frame of participating charges. It has been conjectured that if in their rest frame electrons/positrons experience field strengths of the order of $F_{cr}/α^{3/2}\approx 1600\,F_{cr}$, with $α\approx 1/137$ being the fine-structure constant, their effective coupling with radiation becomes of the order of unity. Here we show that channeling radiation by ultrarelativistic electrons with energies of the order of a few …
LUXE (Laser Und XFEL Experiment) is a new experiment in planning at DESY Hamburg using the electron beam of the European XFEL. LUXE is intended to study collisions between a high-intensity optical laser and 16.5 GeV electrons from the XFEL electron beam, as well as collisions between the optical laser and high-energy secondary photons. The physics objective of LUXE are processes of quantum electrodynamics (QED) at the strong-field frontier, where the electromagnetic field of the laser is above the Schwinger limit. In this regime, QED is non-perturbative. This manifests itself in the creation o…
We revisit the calculation of the fermion self-energy in QED in the presence of a magnetic field. We show that, after carrying out the renormalization procedure and identifying the most general perturbative tensor structure for the modified fermion {mass operator} in the large field limit, the mass develops an imaginary part. This happens when account is made of the sub-leading contributions associated to Landau levels other than the lowest one. The imaginary part is associated to a spectral density describing the spread of the mass function in momentum. The center of the distribution correspo…
Higher-order tree-level processes in strong laser fields, i.e. cascades, are in general extremely difficult to calculate, but in some regimes the dominant contribution comes from a sequence of first-order processes, i.e. nonlinear Compton scattering and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production. At high intensity the field can be treated as locally constant, which is the basis for standard particle-in-cell codes. However, the locally-constant-field (LCF) approximation and these particle-in-cell codes cannot be used when the intensity is only moderately high, which is a regime that is experimenta…
A formalism for the evaluation of the intensity of photon and gluon bremsstrahlung in QED and QCD condensed media is presented which considers general interactions beyond the Fokker-Planck/Gaussian approximation, the angular distribution of the final particles and admits finite or structured target calculations. The Boltzmann/transport approaches of Migdal, Bell and the Baier-Dokshitzer-Mueller-Peigné-Schiff group, and the light-cone path integral formalisms of Zakharov and Wiedemann and Gyulassy are recovered as particular cases within the Fokker-Planck limit, which assumes Brownian motion fo…
Strong background fields require a non-perturbative treatment, which is afforded in QED by the Furry expansion of scattering amplitudes. It has been conjectured that this expansion breaks down for sufficiently strong fields, based on the asymptotic growth of loop corrections with increasing "quantum nonlinearity", essentially the product of field strength and particle energy. However, calculations to date have assumed that the background is constant. We show here, using general plane waves of finite duration, that observables at high quantum nonlinearity scale differently depending on whether …
A workshop, "Probing strong-field QED in electron--photon interactions", was held in DESY, Hamburg in August 2018, gathering together experts from around the world in this area of physics as well as the accelerator, laser and detector technology that underpins any planned experiment. The aim of the workshop was to bring together experts and those interested in measuring QED in the presence of strong fields at and above the Schwinger critical field. The pioneering experiment, E144 at SLAC, measured multi-photon absorption in Compton scattering and $e^+e^-$ pair production in electron--photon in…
