Preliminary ab-initio applications of many-body Green's functions theory to the ground state of He-4 suggest that high accuracy can be achieved in the so-called Faddeev-random-phase-approximation method.
We stress the potentialities of this approach for microscopic studies of medium-large nuclei and report applications to 1s0d and 1p0f-shell nuclei. In particular, we discuss the role of long-range correlations on spectroscopic factors and their dependence on asymmetry.
The recent extensions of the covariant energy density functional theory with the quasiparticle-vibration coupling (QVC) are reviewed. Formulation of the Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) in the relativistic framework is discussed. Self-consistent extensions of the relativistic QRPA imply the QVC which is implemented in two-body propagators in the nuclear medium. This provides fragmentation of the QRPA states describing the damping of the vibrational motion.
We introduce the extension of the ab initio no-core shell model with continuum to describe three-body cluster systems. We present results for the ground state of 6He and show improvements with respect to the description obtained within the no-core shell model and the no-core shell model/resonating group methods.
"Why is the EoS for tin so soft?" is a longstanding question, which prevents us from determining the nuclear incompressibility $K_\infty$ accurately. To solve this puzzle, a fully self-consistent quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) plus quasiparticle-vibration coupling (QPVC) approach based on Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov is developed. We show that the many-body correlations introduced by QPVC, which shift the ISGMR energy in Sn isotopes by about 0.4 MeV more than the energy in $^{208}$Pb, play a crucial role in providing a unified description of the ISGMR in Sn and Pb isotopes. …
The quasiparticle time blocking approximation (QTBA) is applied to describe E1 excitations in the even-even tin isotopes. Within the model pairing correlations, two-quasiparticle (2q), and 2q*phonon configurations are included. Thus the QTBA is an extension of the quasiparticle random phase approximation to include quasiparticle-phonon coupling. Calculational formulas are presented in case of neutral excitations in the spherically symmetric system. The main equations are written in the coordinate representation that allows to take into account single-particle continuum completely. The E1 photo…
Ab initio nuclear theory provides not only a microscopic framework for quantitative description of the nuclear many-body system, but also a foundation for deeper understanding of emergent collective correlations. A symplectic Sp(3,R)$\supset$U(3) dynamical symmetry is identified in ab initio predictions, from a no-core configuration interaction approach, and found to provide a qualitative understanding of the spectrum of 7Be. Low-lying states form an Elliott SU(3) spectrum, while an Sp(3,R) excitation gives rise to an excited rotational band with strong quadrupole connections to the ground sta…
We develop ab-initio coupled-cluster theory to describe resonant and weakly bound states along the neutron drip line. We compute the ground states of the helium chain 3-10He within coupled-cluster theory in singles and doubles (CCSD) approximation. We employ a spherical Gamow-Hartree-Fock basis generated from the low-momentum N3LO nucleon-nucleon interaction. This basis treats bound, resonant, and continuum states on equal footing, and is therefore optimal for the description of properties of drip line nuclei where continuum features play an essential role. Within this formalism, we present an…
Systematic investigation of the accuracy of the description of the energies of deformed one-quasiparticle states has been performed in covariant density functional theory in actinide and rare-earth mass regions. The sources of the discrepancies between theory and experiment are analyzed. Although some improvements in the description of ground state configurations and one-quasiparticle spectra can be achieved by better parametrization of the relativistic mean field Lagrangian, the analysis suggests that spectroscopic quality of their description can be achieved only in theoretical framework whi…
We propose a description of pairing properties in finite systems within the canonical and microcanonical ensembles. The approach is derived by solving the BCS and self-consistent quasiparticle random-phase approximation with the Lipkin-Nogami particle-number projection at zero temperature. The obtained eigenvalues are embedded into the canonical and microcanonical ensembles. The results obtained are found in quite good agreement with the exact solutions of the doubly-folded equidistant multilevel pairing model as well as the experimental data for $^{56}$Fe nucleus. The merit of the present app…
The ${^3{\rm He}}(α,γ){^7{\rm Be}}$ and ${^3{\rm H}}(α,γ){^7{\rm Li}}$ astrophysical $S$ factors are evaluated at low collision energies (less than 2.5 MeV in the centre-of-mass frame) within the no-core shell model with continuum approach using a renormalized chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction.
We have calculated the strength distributions of the giant monopole resonance in the even-A tin isotopes (A = 112-124) which were recently measured in inelastic $α$-scattering. The calculations were performed within two microscopic models: the quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) and the quasiparticle time blocking approximation which is an extension of the QRPA including quasiparticle-phonon coupling. We used a self-consistent calculational scheme based on the HF+BCS approximation. The single-particle continuum was exactly included on the RPA level. The self-consistent mean field a…
As ab-initio calculations of atomic nuclei enter the A=40-100 mass range, a great challenge is how to approach the vast majority of open-shell (degenerate) isotopes. We add realistic three-nucleon interactions to the state of the art many-body Green's function theory of closed-shells, and find that physics of neutron driplines is reproduced with very good quality. Further, we introduce the Gorkov formalism to extend ab-initio theory to semi-magic, fully open-shell, isotopes. Proof-of-principle calculations for Ca-44 and Ni-74 confirm that this approach is indeed feasible. Combining these two a…
The Heavy Shell Model (HSM) (Y. Sun and C.-L. Wu, Phys. Rev. C 68, 024315 (2003)) was proposed to take the advantages of two existing models, the projected shell model (PSM) and the Fermion Dynamical Symmetry Model (FDSM). To construct HSM, one extends the PSM by adding collective D-pairs into the intrinsic basis. The HSM is expected to describe simultaneously low-lying collective and quasi-particle excitations in deformed nuclei, and still keeps the model space tractable even for the heaviest systems. As the first numerical realization of the HSM, we study systematically the band structures f…
The Faddeev random phase approximation (FRPA) method is applied to calculate the ground state and ionization energies of simple atoms. First ionization energies agree with the experiment at the level of ~10 mH or less. Calculations with similar accuracy are expected to provide information required for developing the proposed quasiparticle-DFT method.
In the present work, we have reported shell model results for open shell nuclei Ne, Mg and Si isotopes with $10 \leq N \leq 20$ in $sd$-shell model space. We have performed calculations in $sd$ shell with two $ab~initio$ approaches: in-medium similarity renormalization group (IM-SRG) and coupled-cluster (CC) theory. We have also performed calculations with phenomenological USDB interaction and chiral effective field theory based CEFT interaction. The results for rotational spectra and $B(E2;2_1^+\rightarrow 0_1^+)$ transitions are reported for even-mass isotopes. The IM-SRG and CC results are …
We merge two successful ab initio nuclear-structure methods, the no-core shell model (NCSM) and the multi-reference in-medium similarity renormalization group (IM-SRG) to define a new many-body approach for the comprehensive description of ground and excited states of closed and open-shell nuclei. Building on the key advantages of the two methods---the decoupling of excitations at the many-body level in the IM-SRG and the access to arbitrary nuclei, eigenstates, and observables in the NCSM---their combination enables fully converged no-core calculations for an unprecedented range of nuclei and…
The neutron rich exotic unbound 7He nucleus has been the subject of many experimental investigations. While the ground-state 3/2- resonance is well established, there is a controversy concerning the excited 1/2- resonance reported in some experiments as low-lying and narrow (E_R ~ 1 MeV, Gamma < 1 MeV) while in others as very broad and located at a higher energy. This issue cannot be addressed by ab initio theoretical calculations based on traditional bound-state methods. We introduce a new unified approach to nuclear bound and continuum states based on the coupling of the no-core shell model,…
Band structures of the neutron-rich Mo- and Ru-isotopes around A $\sim $ 110 are investigated using the triaxial projected shell model (TPSM) approach employing multi-quasiparticle configuration space. The mass region under investigation depicts a rich variety of band structures with well developed $γ$- and $γγ$-bands, and quasiparticle excitations based on them. It is demonstrated that TPSM provides a reasonable description of most of the observed properties, in particular, detailed structure variations observed in Mo-isotopes are well reproduced in the present work.
We discuss the studies of light nuclei in ab initio No-core Full Configuration approach based on extrapolations to the infinite model space of large-scale No-core Shell Model calculations on supercomputers. The convergence at the end of p shell and beginning of the sd shell can be achieved if only reasonable soft enough NN interactions are used. In particular, good predictions are obtained with a realistic JISP16 NN interaction obtained in J-matrix inverse scattering approach and fitted to reproduce light nuclei observables without three-nucleon forces. We discuss the current status of this NN…
A simple quasiparticle model, motivated by lowest-order perturbative QCD, is proposed. It is applied to interpret the lattice QCD equation of state. A reasonable reproduction of the lattice data is obtained. In contrast to existing quasiparticle models, the present model is formulated in dynamical rather than thermodynamical terms, and is easily applicable to a system with finite baryon density. In particular, the model simulates the confinement property.
This review presents some of the challenges in constructing models of atomic nuclei starting from theoretical descriptions of the strong interaction between nucleons. The focus is on statistical computing and methods for analyzing the link between bulk properties of atomic nuclei, such as radii and binding energies, and the underlying microscopic description of the nuclear interaction. The importance of careful model calibration and uncertainty quantification of theoretical predictions is highlighted.
We present first ab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) calculations using similarity renormalization group (SRG) transformed chiral two-nucleon (NN) plus three-nucleon (3N) interactions for nuclei throughout the p-shell, particularly 12-C and 16-O. By introducing an adaptive importance truncation for the NCSM model space and an efficient JT-coupling scheme for the 3N matrix elements, we are able to surpass previous NCSM studies including 3N interactions regarding, both, particle number and model-space size. We present ground and excited states in 12-C and 16-O for model spaces up to N_max=12 in…
We study the efficacy of a new ab initio framework that combines the symmetry-adapted (SA) no-core shell-model approach with the resonating group method (RGM) for unified descriptions of nuclear structure and reactions. We obtain ab initio neutron-nucleus interactions for $^4$He, $^{16}$O, and $^{20}$Ne targets, starting with realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials. We discuss the effect of increasing model space sizes and symmetry-based selections on the SA-RGM norm and direct potential kernels, as well as on phase shifts, which are the input to calculations of cross sections. We demonstrate the…
Shear and bulk viscosities of deconfined gluonic matter are investigated within an effective kinetic theory by describing the strongly interacting medium phenomenologically in terms of quasiparticle excitations with medium-dependent self-energies. We show that the resulting transport coefficients reproduce the parametric dependencies on temperature and coupling obtained in perturbative QCD at large temperatures and small running coupling. The extrapolation into the non-perturbative regime results in a decreasing specific shear viscosity with decreasing temperature, exhibiting a minimum in the …
We present a description of the break-up of halo nuclei in peripheral nuclear reactions by coupling a model of the projectile motivated by Halo Effective Field Theory with a fully dynamical treatment of the reaction using the Dynamical Eikonal Approximation. Our description of the halo system reproduces its long-range properties, i.e., binding energy and asymptotic normalization coefficients of bound states and phase shifts of continuum states. As an application we consider the break-up of 11Be in collisions on Pb and C targets. Taking the input for our Halo-EFT-inspired description of 11Be fr…
An {\em ab initio} (i.e., from first principles) theoretical framework capable of providing a unified description of the structure and low-energy reaction properties of light nuclei is desirable to further our understanding of the fundamental interactions among nucleons, and provide accurate predictions of crucial reaction rates for nuclear astrophysics, fusion-energy research, and other applications. In this contribution we review {\em ab initio} calculations for nucleon and deuterium scattering on light nuclei starting from chiral two- and three-body Hamiltonians, obtained within the framewo…
We develop a new ab initio many-body approach capable of describing simultaneously both bound and scattering states in light nuclei, by combining the resonating-group method with the use of realistic interactions, and a microscopic and consistent description of the nucleon clusters. This approach preserves translational symmetry and Pauli principle. We outline technical details and present phase shift results for neutron scattering on 3H, 4He and 10Be and proton scattering on 3He and 4He, using realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials. Our A=4 scattering results are compared to earlier ab ini…
On the basis of the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate method, we develop an efficient microscopic method of deriving the five-dimensional quadrupole collective Hamiltonian and illustrate its usefulness by applying it to the oblate-prolate shape coexistence/mixing phenomena in proton-rich 68,70,72Se. In this method, the vibrational and rotational collective masses (inertial functions) are determined by local normal modes built on constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov states. Numerical calculations are carried out using the pairing-plus-quadrupole Hamiltonian including the quadrupole…
An overview of the ab initio no-core shell model is presented. Recent results for light nuclei obtained with the chiral two-nucleon and three-nucleon interactions are highlighted. Cross section calculations of capture reactions important for astrophysics are discussed. The extension of the ab initio no-core shell model to the description of nuclear reactions by the resonating group method technique is outlined.
The selfconsistent cranking approach is extended to the case of rotation about an axis which is tilted with respect to the principal axes of the deformed potential (Tilted Axis Cranking). Expressions for the energies and the intra bands electromagnetic transition probabilities are given. The mean field solutions are interpreted in terms of quantal rotational states. The construction of the quasiparticle configurations and the elimination of spurious states is discussed. The application of the theory to high spin data is demonstrated by analyzing the multi quasiparticle bands in the nuclide-s w…
The quasiparticle model is extended to investigate the properties of strange quark matter in a strong magnetic field at finite densities. For the density-dependent quark mass, self-consistent thermodynamic treatment is obtained with an additional effective bag parameter, which depends not only on the density but also on the magnetic field strength. The magnetic field makes strange quark matter more stable energetically when the magnetic field strength is less than a critical value of the order $10^7$ Gauss depending on the QCD scale $Λ$. Instead of being a monotonic function of the density for…
We present an introduction to ab initio nuclear theory with a focus on nuclear reactions. After a high-level overview of ab initio approaches in nuclear physics, we give a more detailed description of the no-core shell model technique equivalent to a large extent to configuration-interaction methods applied in quantum chemistry. We then introduce the no-core shell model with continuum approach that provides a quantum many-body description of nuclear reactions. After a brief review of nuclear reactions important for astrophysics, we present examples of results of ab initio calculations of radia…
The dynamics of QCD matter is often described using effective mean field (MF) models based on Boltzmann-Gibbs (BG) extensive statistics. However, such matter is normally produced in small packets and in violent collisions where the usual conditions justifying the use of BG statistics are not fulfilled and the systems produced are not extensive. This can be accounted for either by enriching the original dynamics or by replacing the BG statistics by its nonextensive counterpart described by a nonextensivity parameter $q\neq 1$ (for $q \to 1$ one returns to the extensive situation). In this work …
We present a systematic study of the $^{10-14}\text{C}$ isotopes within the \textit{ab initio} no-core shell model theory. We apply four different realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions: (i) the charge-dependent Bonn 2000 (CDB2K) potential (ii) the inside non-local outside Yukawa (INOY) potential (iii) the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) potential, and (iv) the optimized next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO$_{opt}$) potential. We report the low-lying energy spectra of both positive and negative parity states for the $^{10-14}\text{C}$ isotopes and investigate the level s…
We present the first ab initio calculations for p-shell single-Lambda hypernuclei. For the solution of the many-baryon problem, we develop two variants of the no-core shell model with explicit $Λ$ and $Σ^+$, $Σ^0$, $Σ^-$ hyperons including $Λ$-$Σ$ conversion, optionally supplemented by a similarity renormalization group transformation to accelerate model-space convergence. In addition to state-of-the-art chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions, we use leading-order chiral hyperon-nucleon interactions and a recent meson-exchange hyperon-nucleon interaction. We validate the approach for s-she…
We introduce a new framework for studying clustering and for calculating alpha partial widths using ab initio wave functions. We demonstrate the formalism for $^{20}$Ne, by calculating the overlap between the $^{16}$O$+α$ cluster configuration and states in $^{20}$Ne computed in the ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core shell model. We present spectroscopic amplitudes and spectroscopic factors, and compare those to no-core symplectic shell-model results in larger model spaces, to gain insight into the underlying physics that drives alpha-clustering. Specifically, we report on the alpha partial wi…
The quasiparticle concept is an important tool for the description of many-body systems. We study the quasiparticle properties for dilute Fermi systems with short-ranged, repulsive interactions using effective field theory. We calculate the proper self-energy contributions at order (K_f/Lambda)^3, where Lambda is the short-distance scale that sets the size of the effective range parameters and K_f the Fermi momentum. The quasiparticle energy, width, and effective mass to order O(K_f/Lambda)^3 are derived from the calculated self-energy.
Our first aim is to explore the effect of the collision integral with the insurance of instantaneous conservation of particle number on charge and heat transport in a thermal QCD medium. The second aim is to see how the dimensional reduction due to strong magnetic field (B) modulates the transport through the entangled effects, {\em such as} collision-time and occupation probability etc. in collision integral. The final aim is to check how the quasiparticle description through dispersion relation of thermal QCD in strong B, alters the aforesaid conclusions. We observe that modified collision t…
We demonstrate for the first time that a functional-renormalization-group aided density-functional theory (FRG-DFT) describes well the characteristic features of the excited states as well as the ground state of an interacting many-body system with infinite number of particles in a unified manner. The FRG-DFT is applied to a $(1+1)$-dimensional spinless nuclear matter. For the excited states, the density--density spectral function is calculated at the saturation point obtained in the framework of FRG-DFT, and it is found that our result reproduces a notable feature of the density--density spec…
