We present Hubble Space Telescope NIC2 morphologies of a spectroscopic sample of massive galaxies at z~2.3, by extending our sample of 9 compact quiescent galaxies (r_e~0.9 kpc) with 10 massive emission-line galaxies. The emission-line galaxies are classified by the nature of their ionized emission; there are six star-forming galaxies and four galaxies hosting an active galactic nucleus (AGN). The star-forming galaxies are the largest among the emission-line galaxies, with a median size of re = 2.8 kpc. The three galaxies with the highest star formation rates (> 100M \odot/yr) have irregular and clumpy morphologies. The AGN host galaxies are more similar to the compact quiescent galaxies in terms of their structures (re~1.1 kpc) and spectral energy distributions. The total sample clearly separates into two classes in a color-mass diagram: the large star-forming galaxies that form the blue cloud, and the compact quiescent galaxies on the red sequence. However, it is unclear how or even if the two classes are evolutionary related. Three out of six massive star-forming galaxies have dense cores and thus may passively evolve into compact galaxies due to fading of outer star-forming regions. For these galaxies a reverse scenario, in which compact galaxies grow inside-out by star formation is also plausible. We do caution though that the sample is small. Nonetheless, it is evident that a Hubble sequence of massive galaxies with strongly correlated galaxy properties is already in place at z > 2.
We present very deep Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) photometry of a massive, compact galaxy located in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. This quiescent galaxy has a spectroscopic redshift z=1.91 and has been identified as an extremely compact galaxy by Daddi et al. 2005. We use new H-F160W imaging data obtained with Hubble Space Telescope/WFC3 to measure the deconvolved surface brightness profile to H = 28 mag arcsec**-2. We find that the surface brightness profile is well approximated by an n=3.7 Sersic profile. Our deconvolved profile is constructed by a new technique which corrects the best-fit Sers…
The newly established luminosity functions of high-z galaxies at $4 \lesssim z \lesssim 10$ can provide a stringent check on dark matter models that aim to explain the core properties of dwarf galaxies. The cores of dwarf spheroidal galaxies are understood to be too large to be accounted for by free streaming of warm dark matter without overly suppressing the formation of such galaxies. Here we demonstrate with cosmological simulations that wave dark matter, $ψ$DM, appropriate for light bosons such as axions, does not suffer this problem, given a boson mass of $m_ψ \ge 1.2 \times 10^{-22}{\,\r…
We use deep Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 near-infrared imaging obtained of the GOODS-South field as part of the CANDELS survey to investigate a stellar mass-limited sample of quiescent galaxies at 1.5 < z < 2.5. We measure surface brightness profiles for these galaxies using a method that properly measures low surface brightness flux at large radii. We find that quiescent galaxies at z ~ 2 very closely follow Sersic profiles, with n_{median} = 3.7, and have no excess flux at large radii. Their effective radii are a factor ~ 4 smaller than those of low-redshift quiescent galaxies …
We present Hubble Space Telescope imaging and grism spectroscopy in the field of the distant galaxy cluster JKCS 041 using the Wide Field Camera 3. We confirm that JKCS 041 is a rich cluster and derive a redshift z=1.80 via the spectroscopic identification of 19 member galaxies, of which 15 are quiescent. These are centered upon diffuse X-ray emission seen by the Chandra observatory. As JKCS 041 is the most distant known cluster with such a large, spectroscopically confirmed quiescent population, it provides a unique opportunity to study the effect of the environment on galaxy properties at ea…
We identify nine galaxies with dynamical masses of M_dyn>10^10 M_sol as photometric point sources, but with redshifts between z=0.2 and z=0.6, in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectro-photometric database. All nine galaxies have archival Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images. Surface brightness profile fitting confirms that all nine galaxies are extremely compact (with circularized half-light radii between 0.4 and 6.6 kpc and the median value of 0.74 kpc) for their velocity dispersion (110<sigma<340 km/s; median sigma=178 km/s). From the SDSS spectra, three systems are dominated by very yo…
We present Keck LRIS spectroscopy for a sample of 103 massive galaxies with redshifts 0.9 < z < 1.6. Of these, 56 are quiescent with high signal-to-noise absorption line spectra, enabling us to determine robust stellar velocity dispersions for the largest sample yet available beyond a redshift of 1. Together with effective radii measured from deep Hubble Space Telescope images, we calculate dynamical masses and address key questions relating to the puzzling size growth of quiescent galaxies over 0 < z < 2. We examine the relationship between stellar and dynamical masses at high redshift, findi…
We have obtained spectroscopic confirmation with Hubble Space Telescope WFC3/G141 of a first sizeable sample of nine quiescent galaxies at 2.4<z<3.3. Their average near-UV/optical rest-frame spectrum is characterized by low attenuation (Av$\sim$0.6 mag) and a strong Balmer break, larger than the 4000 A break, corresponding to a fairly young age of $\sim$300 Myr. This formally classifies a substantial fraction of classically selected quiescent galaxies at z $\sim$ 3 as post-starbursts, marking their convergence to the quenching epoch. The rapid spectral evolution with respect to z $\sim$ 1.5 qu…
We present HST/WFC3 grism spectroscopy of the brightest galaxy at z>1.5 in the GOODS-South WFC3 Early Release Science grism pointing, covering the wavelength range 0.9-1.7 micron. The spectrum is of remarkable quality and shows the redshifted Balmer lines Hbeta, Hgamma, and Hdelta in absorption at z=1.902, correcting previous erroneous redshift measurements from the rest-frame UV. The average rest-frame equivalent width of the Balmer lines is 8+-1 Angstrom, which can be produced by a post-starburst stellar population with a luminosity-weighted age of ~0.5 Gyr. The M/L ratio inferred from the s…
We measure the central stellar velocity dispersion function for quiescent galaxies in a set of nine northern clusters in the redshift range $0.18 < z < 0.29$ and with strong lensing arcs in Hubble Space Telescope images. The velocity dispersion function links galaxies directly to their dark matter halos. From dense SDSS and MMT/Hectospec spectroscopy we identify $231 - 479$ spectroscopic members in each cluster. We derive physical properties of cluster members including redshift, $D_{n}4000$, and central stellar velocity dispersion and we include a table of these measurements for 3419 cluster …
We present the morphological properties of 109 Hα-selected galaxies at z>2 in SXDF-UDS-CANDELS field. With high-resolution optical/near-infrared images obtained by Hubble Space Telescope, we identify giant clumps within the Hαemitters (HAEs). We find that at least 41% of our sample show clumpy structures in the underlying disks. The color gradient of clumps is commonly seen in the sense that the clumps near the galactic center tend to be redder than those in the outer regions. The mid-infrared detection in galaxies with red clumps and the spatial distribution of Hαemission suggest that dusty s…
We present an analysis of $\sim$1500 H160-selected photometric galaxies detected to a limiting magnitude of 27.8 in the HUDF, using imaging from the HST WFC3/IR camera in combination with archival UV, optical, and NIR imaging. We fit photometric redshifts and stellar population estimates for all galaxies with well-determined Spitzer IRAC fluxes, allowing for the determination of the cumulative mass function within the range $1<z<6$. By selecting samples of galaxies at a constant cumulative number density, we explore the co-evolution of stellar masses and star formation rates from z$\sim$6. We …
We present deep Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 slitless spectroscopic observations of the distant cluster Cl J1449+0856. These cover a single pointing with 18 orbits of G141 spectroscopy and F140W imaging, allowing us to derive secure redshifts down to m_140~25.5 AB and 3sigma line fluxes of 5*10^(-18) erg/s/cm^2. In particular, we were able to spectroscopically confirm 12 early-type galaxies in the field up to z~3, 6 of which in the cluster core, which represents the first direct spectroscopic confirmation of passive galaxies in a z=2 cluster environment. With 140 redshifts in a ~…

We discuss the structural and morphological properties of galaxies in a z=1.62 proto-cluster using near-IR imaging data from Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 data of the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). The cluster galaxies exhibit a clear color-morphology relation: galaxies with colors of quiescent stellar populations generally have morphologies consistent with spheroids, and galaxies with colors consistent with ongoing star formation have disk-like and irregular morphologies. The size distribution of the quiescent cluster galaxies shows a deficit …
We use ultradeep HST WFC3/IR imaging of the HUDF to investigate the rest-frame optical morphologies of a mass-selected sample of galaxies at z~2. We find a large variety of galaxy morphologies, ranging from large, blue, disk-like galaxies to compact, red, early-type galaxies. We derive rest-frame u-g color profiles for these galaxies and show that most z~2 galaxies in our sample have negative color gradients such that their cores are red. Although these color gradients may partly be caused by radial variations in dust content, they point to the existence of older stellar populations in the cen…
We investigate the morphological properties of 494 galaxies selected from the GMASS survey at z>1, primarily in their optical rest frame, using HST images, from the CANDELS survey. We propose that the Hubble sequence of galaxy morphologies takes shape at redshift 2.5<z<3. The fractions of both ellipticals and disks decrease with increasing lookback time at z>1, such that at redshifts z=2.5-2.7 and above, the Hubble types cannot be identified, and most galaxies are classified as irregular. The quantitative morphological analysis shows that, at 1<z<3, morphological parameters are not as effectiv…
We compare the near-infrared (NIR) H band photometric and morphological properties of low-redshift (z<0.3) 3CR radio galaxies with samples of BL Lac object and quasar host galaxies, merger remnants, quiescent elliptical galaxies, and brightest cluster galaxies drawn from the literature. In general the 3CR host galaxies are consistent with luminous (~L*) elliptical galaxies. The vast majority of FR II's (~80%) occupy the most massive ellipticals and form a homogeneous population that is comparable to the population of radio-loud quasar (RLQ) host galaxies in the literature. However, a significa…
The physical mechanisms and timescales that determine the morphological signatures and the quenching of star formation of typical (~L*) elliptical galaxies are not well understood. To address this issue, we have simulated the formation of a group of galaxies with sufficient resolution to track the evolution of gas and stars inside about a dozen galaxy group members over cosmic history. Galaxy groups, which harbor many elliptical galaxies in the universe, are a particularly promising environment to investigate morphological transformation and star formation quenching, due to their high galaxy d…
We investigate the stellar structure of massive, quiescent galaxies at z~2, based on Hubble Space Telescope/WFC3 imaging from the Early Release Science program. Our sample of 14 galaxies has stellar masses of M* > 10^{10.8} Msol and photometric redshifts of 1.5 < z < 2.5. In agreement with previous work, their half-light radii are <2 kpc, much smaller than equally massive galaxies in the present-day universe. A significant subset of the sample appears highly flattened in projection, which implies, considering viewing angle statistics, that a significant fraction of the galaxies in our sample h…
Cosmic chronometers may be used to measure the age difference between passively evolving galaxy populations to calculate the Hubble parameter H(z). The age estimator emerges from the relationship between the amplitude of the rest frame Balmer break at 4000 angstroms and the age of a galaxy, assuming that there is one single stellar population within each galaxy. However, recent literature has shown possible contamination (up to 2.4% of the stellar mass in a high redshift sample) of a young component embedded within the predominantly old population of the quiescent galaxy. We compared the data …
Recent deep Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 imaging suggests that a majority of compact quiescent massive galaxies at z~2 may contain disks. To investigate this claim, we have compared the ellipticity distribution of 31 carefully selected high-redshift massive quiescent compact galaxies to a set of mass-selected ellipticity and Sersic index distributions obtained from 2D structural fits to ~40,000$ nearby galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov test shows that the distribution of ellipticities for the high-redshift galaxies is consistent with the ellipticity distribution o…
The relative age of galaxies at different redshifts can be used to infer the Hubble parameter and put constraints on cosmological models. We select 23,883 quiescent luminous red galaxies (LRGs) from the SDSS DR7 and divide them into four sub-samples according to their velocity dispersions and each sub-sample is further divided into 12 redshift bins. The spectra of the LRGs in each redshift and velocity bin are co-added in order to obtain a combined spectrum with relatively high $S/N$. Adopting the GalexEV/SteLib model, we estimate the mean ages of the LRGs from these combined spectra by the fu…
We explore the relation between the dynamical mass-to-light ratio ($M/L$) and rest-frame color of massive quiescent galaxies out to z~2. We use a galaxy sample with measured stellar velocity dispersions in combination with Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based multi-band photometry. Our sample spans a large range in $\log M_{dyn}/L_{g}$ (of 1.6~dex) and $\log M_{dyn}/L_{K}$ (of 1.3~dex). There is a strong, approximately linear correlation between the $M/L$ for different wavebands and rest-frame color. The root-mean-scatter scatter in $\log~M_{dyn}/L$ residuals implies that it is possible to …
We study the history from $z\sim2$ to $z\sim0$ of the stellar mass assembly of quiescent and star-forming galaxies in a spatially resolved fashion. For this purpose we use multi-wavelength imaging data from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) over the GOODS fields and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) for the local population. We present the radial stellar mass surface density profiles of galaxies with $M_{\ast}>10^{10} M_{\odot}$, corrected for mass-to-light ratio ($M_{\ast}/L$) variations, and derive the half-mass radius ($R_{m}$), central stellar mass surface density within 1 kpc ($Σ_{1}$) a…
We measure the size-mass relation and its evolution between redshifts 1$<z<$3, using galaxies lensed by six foreground Hubble Frontier Fields clusters. The power afforded by strong gravitation lensing allows us to observe galaxies with higher angular resolution beyond current facilities. We select a stellar mass limited sample and divide them into star-forming or quiescent classes based on their rest-frame UVJ colors from the ASTRODEEP catalogs. Source reconstruction is carried out with the recently-released $lenstruction$ software, which is built on the multi-purpose gravitational lensing sof…

We present 3D-HST, a near-infrared spectroscopic Treasury program with the Hubble Space Telescope for studying the processes that shape galaxies in the distant Universe. 3D-HST provides rest-frame optical spectra for a sample of ~7000 galaxies at 1<z<3.5, the epoch when 60% of all star formation took place, the number density of quasars peaked, the first galaxies stopped forming stars, and the structural regularity that we see in galaxies today must have emerged. 3D-HST will cover 3/4 (625 sq.arcmin) of the CANDELS survey area with two orbits of primary WFC3/G141 grism coverage and two to four…
We study the environmental dependence of color, stellar mass, and morphology by comparing galaxies in a forming cluster to those in the field at z = 1:6 with Hubble Space Telescope near-infrared imaging in the CANDELS/UDS field. We quantify the morphology of the galaxies using the effective radius, reff, and Sérsic index, n. In both the cluster and field, approximately half of the bulge-dominated galaxies (n > 2) reside on the red sequence of the color-magnitude diagram, and most disk-dominated galaxies (n < 2) have colors expected for star-forming galaxies. There is weak evidence that cluster…
We use $>$9400 $\log(m/M_{\odot})>10$ quiescent and star-forming galaxies at $z\lesssim2$ in COSMOS/UltraVISTA to study the average size evolution of these systems, with focus on the rare, ultra-massive population at $\log(m/M_{\odot})>11.4$. The large 2-square degree survey area delivers a sample of $\sim400$ such ultra-massive systems. Accurate sizes are derived using a calibration based on high-resolution images from the Hubble Space Telescope. We find that, at these very high masses, the size evolution of star-forming and quiescent galaxies is almost indistinguishable in terms of normaliza…
In this paper we study the causes of the reported mass-dependence of the slope of SFR-M* relation, the so-called "Main Sequence" of star-forming galaxies, and discuss its implication on the physical processes that shaped the star formation history of massive galaxies over cosmic time. We use the CANDELS near-IR imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope to perform the bulge-to-disk decomposition of distant galaxies and measure for the first time the slope of the SFR-Mdisk relation at z=1. We find that this relation follows very closely the shape of the SFR-M* correlation, still with a pronounced …
We analyze the dependence of galaxy structure (size and Sersic index) and mode of star formation (Σ_SFR and SFR_IR/SFR_UV) on the position of galaxies in the SFR versus Mass diagram. Our sample comprises roughly 640000 galaxies at z~0.1, 130000 galaxies at z~1, and 36000 galaxies at z~2. Structural measurements for all but the z~0.1 galaxies were based on HST imaging, and SFRs are derived using a Herschel-calibrated ladder of SFR indicators. We find that a correlation between the structure and stellar population of galaxies (i.e., a 'Hubble sequence') is already in place since at least z~2.5. …
We present COSMOS-Drift And SHift (DASH), a Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 imaging survey of the COSMOS field in the H_160 filter. The survey comprises 456 individual WFC3 pointings corresponding to an area of 0.49 deg^2 (0.66 deg^2 when including archival data) and reaches a 5 point-source limit of H_160 =25.1 (0".3 aperture). COSMOS-DASH is the widest HST/WFC3 imaging survey in H_160 filter, tripling the extragalactic survey area in the near-infrared at HST resolution. We make the reduced H_160 mosaic available to the community. We use this dataset to measure the sizes of 162 galaxies with log(…
We have used V- and I- band images from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to identify compact stellar clusters within the tidal tails of twelve different interacting galaxies. The seventeen tails within our sample span a physical parameter space of HI/stellar masses, tail pressure and density through their diversity of tail lengths, optical brightnesses, mass ratios, HI column densities, stage on the Toomre sequence, and tail kinematics. Our preliminary findings in this study indicate that star cluster demographics of the tidal tail environment are compatible with the current understanding of s…
