We have performed polarized and unpolarized small angle neutron scattering experiments on single crystals of HoMnO3 and have found that an increase in magnetic scattering at low momentum transfers begins upon cooling through temperatures close to the spin reorientation transition at TSR ~ 40 K. We attribute the increase to an uncompensated magnetization arising within antiferromagnetic domain walls. Polarized neutron scattering experiments performed while applying an electric field show that the field suppresses magnetic scattering below T ~ 50 K, indicating that the electric field affects the magnetization via the antiferromagnetic domain walls rather than through a change to the bulk magnetic order.
We have studied the influence of laser illumination on the magnetization in multiferroic YbFe2O4 single crystals. A photoinduced magnetization change has been confirmed in both ab plane and c axis direction. The temperature dependence of the photoinduced magnetization reduction excludes laser heating as the cause. In terms of the breakdown of charge order driven by laser illumination, the photoinduced magnetization change provides a strong evidence for the spin-charge coupling in YbFe2O4. This photomagnetic effect based on charge-order-induced multiferroicity could be used for non-thermal opti…
LuFe2O4 exhibits multiferroicity due to charge order on a frustrated triangular lattice. We find that the magnetization of LuFe2O4 in the multiferroic state can be electrically controlled by applying voltage pulses. Depending on with or without magnetic fields, the magnetization can be electrically switched up or down. We have excluded thermal heating effect and attributed this electrical control of magnetization to an intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling in response to the electrical breakdown of charge ordering. Our findings open up a new route toward electrical control of magnetization.
We describe the design of a new magnetic ferroelectric with large spontaneous magnetization and polarization using first-principles density functional theory. The usual difficulties associated with the production of robustly-insulating ferromagnets are circumvented by incorporating the magnetism through {\it ferri-}magnetic behavior. We show that the the ordered perovskite \BFCO will have a polarization of $\sim$80 $μ$C/cm$^2$, a piezoelectric coefficient of 283 $μ$C/cm$^{2}$, and a magnetization of $\sim$160 emu/cm$^3$ (2 $μ_B$ per formula unit), far exceeding the properties of any known mult…
Thermodynamic properties of the helical spins with magnetoelectric coupling is simulated by Monte Carlo algorithm. It is shown that the spin-spin correlations are affected by the thermal fluctuations and the electric field. Results for the temperature-dependence of ferroelectric polarization and the susceptibility are also presented in connection with the multiferroic phase transition.
We present sharp magnetization jumps and field induced irreversibility in magnetization in multiferroic Y2CoMnO6. Appearance of magnetic relaxation and field sweep rate dependence of magnetization jumps resemble the martensite like scenario and suggests the coexistence of E*-type antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases at low temperatures. In Y2CoMnO6, the critical field required for the sharp jump can be increased or decreased depening on the magnitude and direction of the cooling field; this is remarkably different from manganites or other metamagnetic materials where the critical field i…
Based on measurements of soft x-ray magnetic diffraction under in-situ applied electric field, wereport on significantly manipulation and exciting of commensurate magnetic order in multiferroic ErMn2O5. The induced magnetic scattering intensity arises at the commensurate magnetic Bragg position whereas the initial magnetic signal almost persists. We demonstrate the possibility to imprint a magnetic response function in ErMn2O5 by applying electric field.
We have studied the high temperature multiferroic cupric oxide using polarized neutron diffraction as a function of temperature and applied electric field. We find that the chiral domain population can be varied using an external electric field applied along the b axis. Using representation analysis we derive the incommensurate magnetic structure in the multiferroic phase. The origin of the magnetoelectric coupling is consistent with models based on the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, but is different from the simple cycloidal mechanism.
We present a theoretical examination of the magneto-electric response in the recently discovered multiferroic insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. Combining Monte Carlo simulation and Ginzburg-Landau analysis we predict the response in each of the magnetic phases, including helical, conical, ferromagnetic and Skyrmion crystal phases, both for thin film and bulk systems. A common feature for all non-collinear phases is that the magneto-electric susceptibility increases linearly with the applied magnetic field. Being both calculable and measurable, the magneto-electric susceptibility can serve as a new pow…
Despite remarkable progress in developing multifunctional materials, spin-driven ferroelectrics featuring both spontaneous magnetization and electric polarization are still rare. Among such ferromagnetic ferroelectrics are conical spin spiral magnets with a simultaneous reversal of magnetization and electric polarization that is still little understood. Such materials can feature various multiferroic domains that complicates their study. Here we study the multiferroic domains in ferromagnetic ferroelectric Mn$_{2}$GeO$_{4}$ using neutron diffraction, and show that it features a double-Q conica…
We performed magnetic and ferroelectric measurements, associated with Landau theory and symmetry analysis, in order to clarify the situation of the YMnO3 system, a classical example of type I multiferroics. We found that the only magnetic group compatible with all experimental data (neutrons scattering, magnetization, polarization, dielectric constant, second harmonic generation) is the P6'3 group. In this group a small ferromagnetic component along c is induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and observed here in SQUID magnetization measurements. We found that the ferromagnetic and a…
The chiral components in the magnetic order in multiferroic MnWO4 have been studied by neutron diffraction using spherical polarization analysis as a function of temperature and of external electric field. We show that sufficiently close to the ferroelectric transition it is possible to switch the chiral component by applying moderate electric fields at constant temperature. Full hysteresis cycles can be observed which indicate strong pinning of the magnetic order. MnWO4, furthermore, exhibits a magnetoelectric memory effect across heating into the paramagnetic and paraelectric phase.
We report on spherical neutron polarimetry and unpolarized neutron diffraction in zero magnetic field as well as flipping ratio and static magnetization measurements in high magnetic fields on the multiferroic square lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$. We found that in zero magnetic field the magnetic space group is $Cm'm2'$ with sublattice magnetization parallel to the [100] axis of this orthorhombic setting. The spin canting has been found to be smaller than $0.2^\circ$ in the ground state. This assignment is in agreement with the field-induced changes of the magnetic domain structu…
Magnetoelectric coupling in helical multiferroics allows to steer spin order with electric fields. Here we show theoretically that in a helical multiferroic chain quantum information processing as well as quantum phases are highly sensitive to electric (E) field. Applying E-field, the quantum state transfer fidelity can be increased and made directionally dependent. We also show that E field transforms the spin-density-wave/nematic or multipolar phases of frustrated ferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain in chiral phase with a strong magnetoelectric coupling. We find sharp reorganization of the entangle…
We present the electron spin resonance study of the influence of an electric field on the low-field multiferroic magnetic state in LiCuVO4. The shift of the magnetic resonance spectra in the electric field has been observed experimentally. Symmetry analysis has been conducted in order to describe the static properties of the magnetic system. The low-frequency dynamics of LiCuVO4 in magnetic and electric fields was considered in the framework of hydrodynamic approach. It was shown that the application of the external electric field leads to the change of the configuration of the magnetic system…
All-electrical control of a dynamic magnetoelectric effect is demonstrated in a classical multiferroic manganite DyMnO3, a material containing coupled antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric orders. Due to intrinsic magnetoelectric coupling with electromagnons a linearly polarized terahertz light rotates upon passing through the sample. The amplitude and the direction of the polarization rotation are defined by the orientation of ferroelectric domains and can be switched by static voltage. These experiments allow the terahertz polarization to be tuned using the dynamic magnetoelectric effect.
This article presents a survey of many nontrivial effects connected with the coupling of electric and magnetic degrees of freedom in solids -- the field initiated by I.~E.~Dzyaloshinskii in 1959. I briefly consider the main physics of ultiferroic materials, and concentrate on different effects "beyond multiferroics", based on the same physical mechanisms which operate in multiferroics. In particular they lead to nontrivial electric properties of different magnetic textures -- such as the appearance of dipoles on magnetic monopoles in spin ice, dipoles on some domain walls in the usual ferromag…
The magnetic exchange bias between epitaxial thin films of the multiferroic (antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric) hexagonal YMnO3 oxide and a soft ferromagnetic (FM) layer is used to couple the magnetic response of the ferromagnetic layer to the magnetic state of the antiferromagnetic one. We will show that biasing the ferroelectric YMnO3 layer by an appropriate electric field allows modifying and controlling the magnetic exchange bias and subsequently the magnetotransport properties of the FM layer. This finding may contribute to pave the way towards a new generation of electric-field control…
Ca_3Co_{2-x}Mn_xO_6 (x ~ 0.96) is a multiferroic with spin-chains of alternating Co(2+) and Mn(4+) ions. The spin state of Co(2+) remains unresolved, due to a discrepancy between high temperature X-ray absorption (S=3/2) and low temperature neutron (S=1/2) measurements. Using a combination of magnetic modeling and crystal-field analysis, we show that the existing low temperature data cannot be reconciled within a high spin scenario by invoking spin-orbit or Jahn-Teller distortions. To unify the experimental results, we propose a spin-state crossover with specific experimental predictions.
The coupling of magnetic chiralities to the ferroelectric polarisation in multiferroic RbFe(MoO$_4$)$_2$ is investigated by neutron spherical polarimetry. Because of the axiality of the crystal structure below $T_\textrm{c}$ = 190 K, helicity and triangular chirality are symmetric-exchange coupled, explaining the onset of the ferroelectricity in this proper-screw magnetic structure - a mechanism that can be generalised to other systems with "ferroaxial" distortions in the crystal structure. With an applied electric field we demonstrate control of the chiralities in both structural domains simu…
In multiferroic TbMn$_2$O$_5$, the behavior of the terbium ions forms a crucial part of the magneto-electric coupling. The result is a magnetically induced reversal of the electric polarization at 2 T. In this article we present the first direct measurement of the terbium magnetic structure under applied magnetic fields. Contrary to the current interpretation of the magnetic properties of \tmo, we show that upon the electric polarization reversal the terbium sub-lattice adopts a canted antiferromagnetic structure with a large component of magnetic moment parallel to the \textit{a}-axis. Furthe…
The dependencies on strain and oxygen vacancies of the ferroelectric polarization and the weak ferromagnetic magnetization in the multiferroic material bismuth ferrite, BiFeO_3, are investigated using first principles density functional theory calculations. The electric polarization is found to be rather independent of strain, in striking contrast to most conventional perovskite ferroelectrics. It is also not significantly affected by oxygen vacancies, or by the combined presence of strain and oxygen vacancies. The magnetization is also unaffected by strain, however the incorporation of oxygen…
Polarized neutron diffraction experiments have been performed on multiferroic materials $R$Mn$_{2}$O$_{5}$ ($R=$Ho, Er) under electric fields in the ferroelectric commensurate (CM) and the low-temperature incommensurate (LT-ICM) phases, where the former has the highest electric polarization and the latter has reduced polarization. It is found that, after cooling in electric fields down to the CM phase, the magnetic chirality is proportional to the electric polarization. Also we confirmed that the magnetic chirality can be switched by the polarity of the electric polarization in both the CM and…
Electric polarization in conventional ferroelectric oxides usually involves nonmagnetic transition-metal ions with an empty d shell (the d$^0$ rule). Here we unravel a new mechanism for local electric dipoles based on magnetic Fe$^{3+}$ (3d$^5$) ion violating the d$^0$ rule. The competition between the long-range Coulomb interaction and short-range Pauli repulsion in a FeO$_5$ bipyramid with proper lattice parameters would favor an off-center displacement of Fe$^{3+}$ that induces a local electric dipole. The manipulation of this kind of non-d$^0$ electric dipoles opens up a new route for gene…
Some magnetoelectric multiferroics have a canted spin structure that can be described by a Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya coupling. We calculate properties and features expected for surface and bulk magnon polaritons in such media with a linear magnetoelectric interaction for the case of transverse electric polarisation. The dielectric polarisation and magnetisation of weak ferromagnetism are constrained to lie in the plane parallel to the surface. We examine a geometry with the polarisation oriented in the film plane and present numerical results for the transverse electric polarisation. Particular att…
We have carried out the ESR study of the multiferroic triangular antiferromagnet CuCrO2 in the presence of an electric field. The shift of ESR spectra by the electric field was observed; the observed value of the shift exceeds that one in materials with linear magnetoelectric coupling. It was shown that the low-frequency dynamics of magnetically ordered CuCrO2 is defined by joint oscillations of the spin plane and electric polarization. The results demonstrate qualitative and quantitative agreement with theoretical expectations of a phenomenological model (V.I. Marchenko (2014)).
Multiferroic CuFe1-xAlxO2 (x=0.02) exhibits a ferroelectric ordering accompanied by a proper helical magnetic ordering below T=7K under zero magnetic field. By polarized neutron diffraction and pyroelectric measurements, we have revealed a one-to-one correspondence between the spin helicity and the direction of the spontaneous electric polarization. This result indicates that the spin helicity of the proper helical magnetic ordering is essential for the ferroelectricity in CuFe1-xAlxO2. The induction of the electric polarization by the proper helical magnetic ordering is, however, cannot be ex…
By an electrical-pump--optical-probe technique we show that the electric-field-induced reversal of the magnetic order parameter in multiferroic MnWO$_4$ occurs on the time scale of milliseconds and maintains a rigid coupling of the magnetization to the magnetically induced electric polarization. The temporal progression of the spatially resolved domain structure was imaged with nanosecond resolution by optical second harmonic generation and compared to the quasi-static domain reversal. A qualitative model gives an estimate of why the magnetoelectric order-parameter reversal in the magnetically…
Ferroelectric Ising chain magnet Ca$_3$Co$_{2-x}$Mn$_x$O$_6$ ($x\simeq$0.96) was studied in magnetic fields up to 33 T. Magnetization and neutron scattering measurements reveal successive metamagnetic transitions from the zero-field $\uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow$ spin configuration to the $\uparrow \uparrow \uparrow \downarrow$ state with a broad magnetization plateau, and then to the $\uparrow \uparrow \uparrow \uparrow$ state. The absence of hysteresis in these plateaus reveals an intriguing coupling between the intra-chain state and the three-dimensional geometrically frustrated …
Multiferroics, showing simultaneous ordering of electrical and magnetic degrees of freedom, are remarkable materials as seen from both the academic and technological points of view. A prominent mechanism of multiferroicity is the spin-driven ferroelectricity, often found in frustrated antiferromagnets with helical spin order. There, similar to conventional ferroelectrics, the electrical dipoles arise from an off-centre displacement of ions. However, recently a different mechanism, namely purely electronic ferroelectricity, where charge order breaks inversion symmetry, has attracted considerabl…
We report for the first time, that Fe3Se4 is a room temperature, type-II multiferroic with magnetoelectric coupling. We observed the coexistence of coupled ferrimagnetic and ferroelectric ordering in Fe3Se4nanorods well above room temperature, which is a hard magnet with large magnetocrystalline anisotropy. For the first time, we observed spontaneous, reversible ferroelectric polarization in Fe3Se4 nanorods below the magnetic Curie temperature. The coupling is manifested by an anomaly in the dielectric constant and Raman shift at Tc. We do not completely understand the origin of the ferroelect…
The magnetic and dielectric properties under high magnetic fields are studied in the single crystal of Cu3Mo2O9. This multiferroic compound has distorted tetrahedral spin chains. The effects of the quasi-one dimensionality and the geometrical spin frustration are expected to appear simultaneously. We measure the magnetoelectric current and the differential magnetization under the pulsed magnetic field up to 74 T. We also measure the electric polarization versus the electric field curve/loop under the static field up to 23 T. Dielectric properties change at the magnetic fields where the magneti…
The magnetic field induced rearrangement of the cycloidal spin structure in ferroelectric mono-domain single crystals of the room-temperature multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ is studied using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The cycloid propagation vectors are observed to rotate when magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the rhombohedral (polar) axis exceed a pinning threshold value of $\sim$5\,T. In light of these experimental results, a phenomenological model is proposed that captures the rearrangement of the cycloidal domains, and we revisit the microscopic origin of the magnetoelectric effe…
Multiferroics with coexistent ferroelectric and magnetic orders can provide an interesting laboratory to test unprecedented magnetoelectric responses and their possible applications. One such example is the dynamical and/or resonant coupling between magnetic and electric dipoles in a solid. As the examples of such dynamical magnetoelectric effects, (1) the multiferroic domain wall dynamics and (2) the electric-dipole active magnetic responses are discussed with the overview of recent experimental observations.
The magnetic structure of multiferroic Ni$_3$V$_2$O$_8$ has been investigated using non-resonant X-ray magnetic scattering. Incident circularly polarized X-rays combined with full polarization analysis of the scattered beam is shown to yield high sensitivity to the components of the cycloidal magnetic order, including their relative phases. New information on the magnetic structure in the ferroelectric phase is obtained, where it is found that the magnetic moments on the "cross-tie" sites are quenched relative to those on the "spine" sites. This implies that the onset of ferroelectricity is as…
Electric control of multiferroic domains is demonstrated through polarized magnetic neutron diffraction. Cooling to the cycloidal multiferroic phase of Ni3V2O8 in an electric field (E) causes the incommensurate Bragg reflections to become neutron spin polarizing, the sense of neutron polarization reversing with E. Quantitative analysis indicates the E-treated sample has handedness that can be reversed by E. We further show close association between cycloidal and ferroelectric domains through E-driven spin and electric polarization hysteresis. We suggest that definite cycloidal handedness is ac…
Magnetic domains at the surface of a ferroelectric monodomain BiFeO3 single crystal have been imaged by hard X-ray magnetic scattering. Magnetic domains up to several hundred microns in size have been observed, corresponding to cycloidal modulations of the magnetization along the wave-vector k=2π(δ,δ,0) and symmetry equivalent directions. The rotation direction of the magnetization in all magnetic domains, determined by diffraction of circularly polarized light, was found to be unique and in agreement with predictions of a combined approach based on a spin-model complemented by relativistic de…
Non-reciprocal directional dichroism, also called the optical-diode effect, is an appealing functional property inherent to the large class of non-centrosymmetric magnets. However, the in-situ electric control of this phenomenon is challenging as it requires a set of conditions to be fulfilled: Special symmetries of the magnetic ground state, spin-excitations with comparable magnetic- and electric-dipole activity and switchable electric polarization. We demonstrate the isothermal electric switch between domains of Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$ possessing opposite magnetoelectric susceptibilities. Combin…
We investigate magnetoelectric coupling and low-energy magnetic excitations in multiferroic $α$-Cu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$ by detailed thermal expansion, magnetostriction, specific heat and magnetization measurements in magnetic fields up to 15~T and by high-field/high-frequency electron spin resonance studies. Our data show negative thermal expansion in the temperature range $\leq 200$~K under study. Well-developed anomalies associated with the onset of multiferroic order (canted antiferromagnetism with a significant magnetic moment and ferroelectricity) imply pronounced coupling to the structure. We d…
We have grown single crystals of multiferroic double-perovskite Lu2CoMnO6 and studied the directional dependence of their magnetic and dielectric properties. The ferromagnetic order emerges below TC ~ 48K along the crystallographic c axis. Dielectric anomaly arises along the b axis at TC, contrary to the polycrystalline work suggesting ferroelectricity along the c axis. Through the strongly coupled ferromagnetic and dielectric states, the highly non-linear variation of both dielectric constant and magnetization was achieved in application of magnetic fields. This concurrent tunability provides…
Colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) and electroresistance (CER) induced by the electric field in spinel multiferroic CdCr2S4 are reported. It is found that a metal-insulator transition (MIT) in CdCr2S4 is triggered by the electrical field. In magnetic fields, the resistivity of CdCr2S4 responds similarly to that of CMR manganites. Combing previous reports, these findings make CdCr2S4 the unique compound to possess all four properties of the colossal magnetocapacitive (CMC), colossal electrocapacitive (CEC), CER, and CMR. The present results open a new venue for searching new materials to show CMR…
We demonstrate multiferroic behavior in trimerized Mott insulators through interplay between spins and electric dipole moments resulting from electronic charge fluctuations in frustrated units. The model consists of stacked triangular layers of trimers with small intertrimer exchange interactions $J'$ and $J"$. Ferroelectric states coexist with ferro- or antiferromagnetic orderings depending on the value of the magnetic field $H$ and the sign of the interlayer exchange $J"$. The electric polarization undergoes abrupt changes as a function of $H$.
Neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and dielectric constant measurements of single crystal Co3TeO6 have been measured to study the interplay between the ferroelectricity and magnetic order. Long range incommensurate magnetic order develops below TM1=26 K, which is followed by three additional zero-field phase transitions at TM2=19.5 K, TM3=18 K, and TM4=16 K where the incommensurate order changes and commensurate order develops. In magnetic fields up to 14 T we find that the magnetic intensities and incommensurate wave vector are dramatically altered as ferroelectricit…
The electric field effect on magnetism was examined in the multiferroic conical magnet Mn$_2$GeO$_4$, which shows a strong coupling between ferromagnetic and ferroelectric order parameters. The systematic evaluation of the electric polarization in the multiferroic phase below 5.5 K under various field cooling conditions reveals that small magnetic fields of 0.1 T significantly reduce the required electric fields needed to reach saturation. By applying electric fields during magnetic field dependent hysteresis measurements of magnetization M and polarization P an electrically controllable excha…
We theoretically discover that unique eigenmodes of skyrmion crystal (SkX) are not only magnetically active to ac magnetic field (H^w) but also electrically active to ac electric field (E^w) in a multiferroic chiral-lattice magnet Cu2OSeO3, which amplifies the dynamical magnetoelectric coupling between E^w and the spin texture. The resulting intense interference between their electric and magnetic activation processes can lead to unprecedentedly large diode effect on the microwave, i.e., its absorption by SkX changes up to ~20% when the incident direction is reversed. Our results demonstrate t…
Ba2CoGe2O7, crystallizing in the noncentrosymmetric but nonpolar structure, belongs to a special class of multiferroic materials, whose properties are predetermined by the rotoinversion symmetry. Unlike inversion, the rotoinversion symmetry can be easily destroyed by the magnetization. Moreover, due to specific structural pattern, the magnetic structure of Ba2CoGe2O7 is relatively soft. Altogether, this leads to the rich variety of multiferroic properties, where the magnetic structure can be easily deformed by the magnetic field, inducing the electric polarization in the direction, which depen…
We present a simple two-dimensional model in which the lattice degrees of freedom mediate the interactions between magnetic moments and electric dipoles. This model reproduces basic features, such as a sudden electric polarization switch-off when a magnetic field is applied and the ubiquitous dimerized distortion patterns and magnetic $\uparrow \uparrow \downarrow \downarrow$ ordering, observed in several multiferroic materials of different composition. The list includes E-type manganites, RMnO$_3$, nickelates such as in YNiO$_3$ and other materials under strain, such as TbMnO$_3$. In spite of…
This paper reports on a theoretical proposal for electrical creation of magnetic skyrmions on a thin-film specimen of a multiferroic chiral magnet by local application of an electric field, instead of an electric current, via an electrode tip. This method can be traced back to the mutual coupling between skyrmion spins and the electric polarizations in multiferroics, and represents a unique technique for use in potential skyrmion-based memory devices without Joule-heating losses.
In this article, the collective response of the spins is explored through low field bulk magnetic measurement for the series YMn$_{2-x}$Cr$_x$O$_5$ (x= 0.0, 0.05). Low field ac susceptibility and dc magnetization of YMn$_2$O$_5$ shows multiple transition in analogy to those observed in electrical measurement of the compound. Using various time dependent magnetization protocols it has been observed that the behavior of spins in commensurate and incommensurate phase are drastically different. YMn$_{1.95}$Cr$_{0.05}$O$_5$ undergoes a ferrimagnetic ordering with an enhanced magnetic ordering tempe…
The control of multiferroic domains through external electric fields has been studied by dielectric measurements and by polarized neutron diffraction on single-crystalline TbMnO$_3$. Full hysteresis cycles were recorded by varying an external field of the order of several kV/mm and by recording the chiral magnetic scattering as well as the charge in a sample capacitor. Both methods yield comparable coercive fields that increase upon cooling.
We study in this paper bond distortion effect on electric polarization in spiral multiferroic magnets based on cluster and chain models. The bond distortion break inversion symmetry and modify the $d$-$p$ hybridization. Consequently, it will affect electric polarization which can be divided into spin-current part and lattice-mediated part. The spin-current polarization can be written in terms of $\vec{e}_{i,j}\times(\vec{e}_{i}\times\vec{e}_{j}) $ and the lattice-mediated polarization exists only when the M-O-M bond is distorted. The electric polarization for three-atom M-O-M and four-atom M-O…
The electric polarization and its magnetic origins in multiferroic RMn2O5, where R is rare-earth ion, are still issues under debate. In this work, the temperature-dependent electric polarization of DyMn2O5, the most attractive member of this RMn2O5 family, is investigated using the pyroelectric current method upon varying endpoint temperature of the electric cooling, plus the positive-up-negative-down (PUND) technique. It is revealed that DyMn2O5 at low temperature does exhibit the unusual ferrielectricity rather than ferroelectricity, characterized by two interactive and anti-parallel ferroel…
Low energy excitations in the multiferroic material TbMnO3 have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Our observations reveal the existence of two peaks at 30 cm-1 and 60 cm-1. They are observed in the cycloidal phase below the Curie temperature but not in the sinusoidal phase, suggesting their magnetoelectric origin. While the peak energies coincide with the frequencies of electromagnons measured previously by transmission spectroscopy, they show surprisingly different selection rules, with the 30 cm-1 excitation enhanced by the electric field of light along the spontaneous polarization. T…
We investigate the electronic structure and the ferroelectric properties of the recently discovered multiferroic ScFeO$_3$ by means of ab-initio calculations. The $3d$ manifold of Fe in the half-filled configuration naturally favors an antiferromagnetic ordering, with a theoretical estimate of the antiferromagnetic Néel temperature in good agreement with the experimental values. We find that the inversion symmetry-breaking is driven by the off-centering of Sc atoms, which results in a large ferroelectric polarization of $\sim$105\,$μ$C/cm$^{2}$. Surprisingly the ferroelectric polarization is s…
BiFe1-xCrxO3 (x=0.0, 0.05 and 0.1) nanoparticles are prepared by a combustion method without using any solvent. All the synthesized nanoparticles are single phase in nature, nearly spherical in shape and crystallize in distorted perovskite structure and space group R3c with an average crystallite size of the order of 40 nm. The room temperature magnetization observed in BiFeO3 nanoparticles is larger than that in the bulk. Increasing Cr doping leads to increase in the magnetization and coercivity. Strong superexchange interaction between Fe3+ and Cr3+ atoms is likely to give rise to such incre…
We proposed that in multiferroics there exists a third long range order besides the electric polarization and magnetic order. This long range order reduces the symmetry of the spatial part of the wave functions of electrons. Thus the cancellation in the spin current" model can be avoided. As a result, the expectation value of electric polarization will be larger by an order of magnitude. We have derived a new form of electric polarization \vec{P} -\vec{Q}\times(\vec{s_i}\times\vec{s_{j+1}}) where \vec{Q} is the wave vector of this long range order
We present a phenomenological scheme to study the size-dependent electric voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy in ferromagnetic (FM)/ferroelectric (FE) heterostructures. The FM layers are either metallic Fe(001), Ni(001), Co(0001), or half-metallic (La, Sr)MnO3 films. Two magnetoelectric mechanisms, i.e., interface-charge and strain-mediated couplings, are considered. We show that the interface-charge mediated coupling is the main mechanism for the magnetoelectic coupling when the FM film thickness is below a certain transition thickness dtr while the strain-mediated coupling dominates above…
A simple but general microscopic mechanism to understand the interplay between the electric and magnetic degrees of freedom is developed. Within this mechanism, the magnetic structure generates an electric current which induce an counterbalance electric current from the spin orbital coupling. When the magnetic structure is described by a single order parameter, the electric polarization is determined by the single spin orbital coupling parameter, and the material is predicted to be a half insulator. This mechanism provides a simple estimation of the value of ferroelectricity and sets a physica…
