Let G be an arbitrary finite weighted digraph with weights in the set of complex rational functions. A general procedure is proposed which allows for the reduction of G to a smaller graph with a less complicated structure having the same spectrum as of G (up to some set known in advance). The proposed procedure has a lot of flexibility and could be used e.g. for design of networks with prescribed spectral and dynamical properties.
We give a new formula for computing the isospectral reduction of a matrix (and graph) down to a submatrix (or subgraph). Using this, we generalize the notion of isospectral reductions. In addition, we give a procedure for constructing a matrix whose isospectral reduction down to a submatrix is given. We also prove that the isospectral reduction completely determines the restriction of the quantum walk transition matrix to a subset. Using these, we construct new families of simple graphs exhibiting perfect quantum state transfer.
Via the process of isospectral graph reduction the adjacency matrix of a graph can be reduced to a smaller matrix while its spectrum is preserved up to some known set. It is then possible to estimate the spectrum of the original matrix by considering Gershgorin-type estimates associated with the reduced matrix. The main result of this paper is that eigenvalue estimates associated with Gershgorin, Brauer, Brualdi, and Varga improve as the matrix size is reduced. Moreover, given that such estimates improve with each successive reduction, it is also possible to estimate the eigenvalues of a matri…
Two emerging topics in graph theory are the study of cospectral vertices of a graph, and the study of isospectral reductions of graphs. In this paper, we prove a fundamental relationship between these two areas, which is that two vertices of a graph are cospectral if and only if the isospectral reduction over these vertices has a nontrivial automorphism. It is well known that if two vertices of a graph are symmetric, i.e. if there exists a graph automorphism permuting these two vertices, then they are cospectral. This paper extends this result showing that any two cospectral vertices are symme…
We employ the recently developed theory of isospectral network reductions to analyze multi-mode social networks. This procedure allows us to uncover the hierarchical structure of the networks we consider as well as the hierarchical structure of each mode of the network. Additionally, by performing a dynamical analysis of these networks we are able to analyze the evolution of their structure allowing us to find a number of other network features. We apply both of these approaches to the Southern Women Data Set, one of the most studied social networks and demonstrate that these techniques provid…
We prove that the Cayley graphs $X(G,S)$ and $X^+(G,S)$ are equienergetic for any abelian group $G$ and any symmetric subset $S$. We then focus on the family of unitary Cayley graphs $G_R=X(R,R^*)$, where $R$ is a finite commutative ring with identity. We show that under mild conditions, $\{G_R, G_R^+\}$ are pairs of integral equienergetic non-isospectral graphs (generically connected and non-bipartite). Then, we obtain conditions such that $\{G_R, \bar G_R\}$ are equienergetic non-isospectral graphs. Finally, we characterize all integral equienergetic non-isospectral triples $\{G_R, G_R^+, \b…
New criteria for which Cayley graphs of cyclic groups of any order can be completely determined--up to isomorphism--by the eigenvalues of their adjacency matrices is presented. Secondly, a new construction for pairs of nonisomorphic Cayley graphs of cyclic groups with the same list of eigenvalues of their adjacency matrices will be presented.
We apply spectral analysis of quotients of the Bruhat-Tits buildings of type $\tilde{A}_{d-1}$ to construct isospectral non-isomorphic Cayley graphs of the finite simple groups $\operatorname{PSL}_d({\mathbb F}_q)$ for every $d \geq 5$ ($d \neq 6$) and prime power $q > 2$.
In this article, we develop a perturbative technique to construct families of non-isomorphic discrete graphs which are isospectral for the standard (also called normalised) Laplacian and its signless version. We use vertex contractions as a graph perturbation and spectral bracketing with auxiliary graphs which have certain eigenvalues with high multiplicity. There is no need to know explicitly the eigenvalues or eigenfunctions of the corresponding graphs. We illustrate the method by presenting several families of examples of isospectral graphs including fuzzy complete bipartite graphs and subd…
We introduce a new method for constructing isospectral quantum graphs that is based on transplanting derivatives of eigenfunctions. We also present simple digraphs with the same reversing zeta function, which generalizes the Bartholdi zeta function to digraphs.
A well--known fact in Spectral Graph Theory is the existence of pairs of isospectral nonisomorphic graphs (known as PINGS). The work of A.J. Schwenk (in 1973) and of C. Godsil and B. McKay (in 1982) shed some light on the explanation of the presence of isospectral graphs, and they gave routines to construct PINGS. Here, we consider the Godsil-McKay--type routines developed for graphs, whose adjacency matrices are $(0,1)$-matrices, to the level of signed graphs, whose adjacency matrices allow the presence of $-1$'s. We show that, with suitable adaption, such routines can be successfully ported …
We introduce a connection between a near-term quantum computing device, specifically a Gaussian boson sampler, and the graph isomorphism problem. We propose a scheme where graphs are encoded into quantum states of light, whose properties are then probed with photon-number-resolving detectors. We prove that the probabilities of different photon-detection events in this setup can be combined to give a complete set of graph invariants. Two graphs are isomorphic if and only if their detection probabilities are equivalent. We present additional ways that the measurement probabilities can be combine…
Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be two simple connected graphs. The invariant \textit{coronal} of graph is used in order to determine the $α$-eigenvalues of four different types of graph equations that are $G_1 \circ G_2, G_1\lozenge G_1$ and the other two`s are $G_1 \odot G_2$ and $G_1 \circleddash G_2$ which are obtained using the $R$-graph of $G_1$. As an application we construct infinitely many pairs of non-isomorphic $α$-Isospectral graph.
We describe a graph reduction operation, generalizing three graph reduction operations related to gene assembly in ciliates. The graph formalization of gene assembly considers three reduction rules, called the positive rule, double rule, and negative rule, each of which removes one or two vertices from a graph. The graph reductions we define consist precisely of all compositions of these rules. We study graph reductions in terms of the adjacency matrix of a graph over the finite field with two elements, and show that they are path invariant, in the sense that the result of a sequence of graph …
We present a polynomial time reduction from the multi-graph isomorphism problem to the problem of code equivalence of additive codes over finite extensions of ${\mathbb F}_2$.
In a bidirected graph an edge has a direction at each end, so bidirected graphs generalize directed graphs. We generalize the definitions of transitive closure and transitive reduction from directed graphs to bidirected graphs by introducing new notions of bipath and bicircuit that generalize directed paths and cycles. We show how transitive reduction is related to transitive closure and to the matroids of the signed graph corresponding to the bidirected graph.
We construct a sequence of subset partition graphs satisfying the dimension reduction, adjacency, strong adjacency, and endpoint count properties whose diameter has a superlinear asymptotic lower bound. These abstractions of polytope graphs give further evidence against the Linear Hirsch Conjecture.
We demonstrate that the greedy algorithm for reduction of divisors on metric graphs need not terminate by modeling the Euclidean algorithm in this context. We observe that any infinite reduction has a well defined limit allowing us to treat the greedy reduction algorithm as a transfinite algorithm and to analyze its running time via ordinal numbers. We provide lower and upper bounds which establish a worst case running time of $ω^{Θ({\rm deg}(D))}$.
In this paper, we study two applications of graph minor reduction. In the first part of the paper, we introduce a variant of the boxicity, called strong boxicity, where the rectangular representation satisfies an additional condition that each rectangle contains at least one point not present in any other rectangle. We show how the strong boxicity of a graph~\(G\) can be estimated in terms of the strong boxicity of a minor~\(H\) and the number of edit operations needed to obtain~\(H\) from~\(G.\) In the second part of the paper, we consider false data injection (attack) in a flow graph~\(G\) a…
