We prove the generalized Obata theorem on foliations. Let M be a complete Riemannian manifold with a foliation F of codimension $q>1$ and a bundle-like metric. Then $(M, F)$ is transversally isometric to the q-sphere of radius 1/c in (q+1)-dimensional Euclidean space endowed with the action of a discrete subgroup of the orthogonal group O(q), if and only if there exists a non-constant basic function f such that $\nabla_X df = -c^2 f X^\flat for all basic normal vector fields X, where c is a positive constant and \nabla is the connection on the normal bundle. By the generalized Obata theorem, we classify such manifolds which admit transversal non-isometric conformal fields.
In this note we present various extensions of Obata's rigidity theorem concerning the Hessian of a function on a Riemannian manifold. They include general rigidity theorems for the generalized Obata equation, and hyperbolic and Euclidean analogs of Obata's theorem. Besides analyzing the full rigidity case we also characterize the geometry and topology of the underlying manifold in more general situations.
We study almost bi-paracontact structures on contact manifolds. We prove that if an almost bi-paracontact structure is defined on a contact manifold $(M,η)$, then under some natural assumptions of integrability, $M$ carries two transverse bi-Legendrian structures. Conversely, if two transverse bi-Legendrian structures are defined on a contact manifold, then $M$ admits an almost bi-paracontact structure. We define a canonical connection on an almost bi-paracontact manifold and we study its curvature properties, which resemble those of the Obata connection of an anti-hypercomplex (or complex-pro…
We prove Obata's rigidity theorem for metric measure spaces that satisfy a Riemannian curvature-dimension condition. Additionally, we show that a lower bound $K$ for the generalized Hessian of a sufficiently regular function $u$ holds if and only if $u$ is $K$-convex. A corollary is also a rigidity result for higher order eigenvalues.
The paper gives a categorical approach to generalized manifolds such as orbit spaces and leaf spaces of foliations. It is suggested to consider these spaces as sets equipped with some additional structure which generalizes the notion of atlas. The approach is compared with the known ones that use the Grothendieck topos, the Haefliger classifying space and the Connes non-commutative geometry. The main aim of this paper is to indicate that the suggested approach permits to simplify essentially the modern theory of the leaf space of foliations and the orbit space of diffeomorphism groups, and to …
A characterization of the foliation by spacelike slices of an $(n+1)$-dimensional spatially closed Generalized Robertson-Walker spacetime is given by means of studying a natural mean curvature type equation on spacelike graphs. Under some natural assumptions, of physical or geometric nature, all the entire solutions of such an equation are obtained. In particular, the case of entire spacelike graphs in de Sitter spacetime is faced and completely solved by means of a new application of a known integral formula.
In this paper we investigate the mean curvature flow (MCF) of a regular leaf of a closed generalized isoparametric foliation as initial datum, generalizing previous results of Radeschi and first author. We show that, under bounded curvature conditions, any finite time singularity is a singular leaf, and the singularity is of type I. We also discuss the existence of basin of attractions, how cylinder structures can affect convergence of basic MCF of immersed submanifolds and make a few remarks on MCF of non closed leaves of generalized isoparametric foliation.
Let $(M,g_M,\mathcal F)$ be a closed, connected Riemannian manifold with a Riemannian foliation $\mathcal F$ of nonzero constant transversal scalar curvature. When $M$ admits a transversal nonisometric conformal field, we find some generalized conditions that $\mathcal F$ is transversally isometric to the sphere.
We consider the energy of smooth generalized distributions and also of singular foliations on compact Riemannian manifolds for which the set of their singularities consists of a finite number of isolated points and of pairwise disjoint closed submanifolds. We derive a lower bound for the energy of all $q$-dimensional almost regular distributions, for each $q< \dim M,$ and find several examples of foliations which minimize the energy functional over certain sets of smooth generalized distributions.
We give a generalized curvature-dimension inequality connecting the geometry of sub-Riemannian manifolds with the properties of its sub-Laplacian. This inequality is valid on a large class of sub-Riemannian manifolds obtained from Riemannian foliations. We give a geometric interpretation of the invariants involved in the inequality. Using this inequality, we obtain a lower bound for the eigenvalues of the sub-Laplacian. This inequality also lays the foundation for proving several powerful results in Part~II.
We consider principal bundles as generalized morphisms between topological groupoids. In the category of these generalized morphisms two topological groupoids are isomorphic if and only if they are Morita equivalent. We show that the fibers of a generalized morphism from H to G induce a singular foliation of the topological groupoid H, and we prove a Reeb-Thurston stability theorem for such foliations. Next, we use generalized morphisms to study some Morita invariants of topological groupoids, in particular the homotopy groups of a topological groupoid and the Connes convolution algebra of an …
The present paper unifies some aspects concerning the vertical Liouville distributions on the tangent (cotangent) bundle of a Finsler (Cartan) space in the context of generalized geometry. More exactly, we consider the big-tangent manifold $\mathcal{T}M$ associated to a Finsler space $(M,F)$ and of its $\mathcal{L}$-dual which is a Cartan space $(M,K)$ and we define three Liouville distributions on $\mathcal{T}M$ which are integrable. We also find geometric properties of both leaves of Liouville distribution and the vertical distribution in our context.
In this paper, we show that along $\mathbb Q$-Fano fibration, when general fibres, base and central fiber (with at worst Kawamata log terminal singularities)are K-poly stable then there exists a relative Kähler-Einstein metric. We introduce the fiberwise Kähler-Einstein foliation and we mention that the main difficulty to obtain higher estimates is to solve relative CMA equation along such foliation. We propose a program such that for finding a pair of canonical metric $(ω_X,ω_B)$, which satisfies in $$Ric(ω_X)=π^*ω_B+π^*(ω_{WP})+[\mathcal N]$$ on K-poly stable degeneration $π:X\to B$, where $…
We prove several vanishing theorems for a class of generalized elliptic genera on foliated manifolds, by using classical equivariant index theory. The main techniques are the use of the Jacobi theta-functions and the construction of a new class of elliptic operators associated to foliations.
We answer the natural question: when are a regular Poisson structure along with a complex structure transverse to its symplectic leaves induced by generalized complex structure? The leafwise symplectic form and transverse complex structure determine an obstruction class in a certain cohomology, which vanishes if and only if our question has an affirmative answer. We first study a component of this obstruction, which gives the condition that the leafwise cohomology class of the symplectic form must be transversely pluriharmonic. As a consequence, under certain topological hypotheses, we infer t…
Piecewise Euclidean structures (identified solid Euclidean polyhedra) on topological 3-dimensional manifolds and pseudo-manifolds are constructed so that they admit pseudo-foliations, a generalized type of foliation. The construction of non-manifold point neighborhoods is done to preserve as much of the geometric, and vector space, structure of Euclidean space as possible. This enables structures, such as foliations and calibrations, to generalize over to pseudo-manifolds. The main result is that the cone of any compact topological surfaces can be given a piecewise flat metric structure that a…
In this paper, we discuss spectral properties of Laplacians associated with an arbitrary smooth distribution on a compact manifold. First, we give a survey of results on generalized smooth distributions on manifolds, Riemannian structures and associated Laplacians. Then, under the assumption that the singular foliation generated by the distribution is regular, we prove that the Laplacian associated with the distribution defines an unbounded multiplier on the foliation $C^*$-algebra. To this end, we give the construction of a parametrix.
In this paper, we study $(\mathcal F,\mathcal F')_{p}$-harmonic maps between foliated Riemannian manifolds $(M,g,\mathcal F)$ and $(M',g',\mathcal F')$. A $(\mathcal F,\mathcal F')_{p}$-harmonic map $ϕ:(M,g,\mathcal F)\to (M', g',\mathcal F')$ is a critical point of the transversal $p$-energy functional $E_{B,p}$. Trivially, $(\mathcal F,\mathcal F')_2$-harmonic map is $(\mathcal F,\mathcal F')$-harmonic map, which is a critical point of $E_B$. There is another definition of a harmonic map on foliated Riemannian manifolds, called transversally harmonic map, which is a solution of the Euler-Lar…
The generalized Chen's conjecture on biharmonic submanifolds asserts that any biharmonic submanifold of a non-positively curved manifold is minimal (see e.g., [CMO1], [MO], [BMO1], [BMO2], [BMO3], [Ba1], [Ba2], [Ou1], [Ou2], [IIU]). In this paper, we prove that this conjecture is false by constructing foliations of proper biharmonic hyperplanes in a 5-dimensional conformally flat space with negative sectional curvature. Many examples of proper biharmonic submanifolds of non-positively curved spaces are also given.
We characterize biharmonic anti-invariant surfaces in $3$-dimensional generalized $(κ, μ)$-manifolds with non-zero constant mean curvature by means of the scalar curvature of the ambient space and the mean curvature. In addition, we give a method for constructing infinity many examples of biharmonic submanifolds in a certain $3$-dimensional generalized $(κ, μ)$-manifold. Moreover, we determine $3$-dimensional generalized $(κ, μ)$-manifolds which admit a certain kind of proper biharmonic foliation.
It is proven that the identity component of the group preserving the leaves of a generalized foliation is perfect. This shows that a well-known simplicity theorem on the diffeomorphism group extends to the nontransitive case.
On a smooth manifold M, generalized complex (generalized paracomplex) structures provide a notion of interpolation between complex (paracomplex) and symplectic structures on M. Given a complex manifold (M,j), we define six families of distinguished generalized complex or paracomplex structures on M. Each one of them interpolates between two geometric structures on M compatible with j, for instance, between totally real foliations and Kahler structures, or between hypercomplex and C-symplectic structures. These structures on M are sections of fiber bundles over M with typical fiber G/H for some…
In 1996, Huisen-Yau proved that every three-dimensional, asymptotically Schwarzschilden manifold with positive mass is uniquely foliated by stable spheres of constant mean curvature and they defined the center of mass using this CMC-foliation. Rigger and Neves-Tian showed in 2004 and 2009/10 analogous existence and uniqueness theorems for three-dimensional, asymptotically Anti-de Sitter and asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with positive mass aspect function, respectively. Last year, Cederbaum-Cortier-Sakovich proved that the CMC-foliation characterizes the center of mass in the hyperbolic s…
We prove that a compact smooth 4-manifold admits generalized complex structures of odd type if and only if it has a transversely holomorphic 2-foliation. Consequently, there exist generalized complex structures of odd type on a circle bundle over a closed Seifert fibered 3-manifold.

In information geometry, generalized exponential families and statistical manifolds with curvature are under active investigation in recent years. In this paper we consider the statistical manifold induced by a logarithmic $L^{(α)}$-divergence which generalizes the Bregman divergence. It is known that such a manifold is dually projectively flat with constant negative sectional curvature, and is closely related to the $\mathcal{F}^{(α)}$-family, a generalized exponential family introduced by the second author. Our main result constructs a dual foliation of the statistical manifold, i.e., an ort…
Hiss and Szczepański proved in 1991 that the holonomy group of any compact flat Riemannian manifold, of dimension at least two, acts reducibly on the rational span of the Euclidean lattice associated with the manifold via the first Bieberbach theorem. Geometrically, their result states that such a manifold must admit a nonzero proper parallel distribution with compact leaves. We study algebraic and geometric properties of the sublattice-spanned holonomy-invariant subspaces that exist due to the above theorem, and of the resulting compact-leaf foliations of compact flat manifolds. The class con…
In an earlier paper, we studied manifolds $M$ endowed with a generalized F structure $Φ\in End(TM\oplus T^*M)$, skew-symmetric with respect to the pairing metric, such that $Φ^3+Φ=0$. Furthermore, if $Φ$ is integrable (in some well-defined sense), $Φ$ is a generalized CRF structure. In the present paper we study quasi-classical generalized F and CRF structures, which may be seen as a generalization of the holomorphic Poisson structures (it is well known that the latter may also be defined via generalized geometry). The structures that we study are equivalent to a pair of tensor fields $(A\in E…
We show that certain submanifolds of generalized complex manifolds ("weak branes") admit a natural quotient which inherits a generalized complex structure. This is analog to quotienting coisotropic submanifolds of symplectic manifolds. In particular Gualtieri's generalized complex submanifolds ("branes") quotient to space-filling branes. Along the way we perform reductions by foliations (i.e. no group action is involved) for exact Courant algebroids - interpreting the reduced Ševera class - and for Dirac structures.
We extend the problem of finding Hamiltonian-invariant volume forms on a Poisson manifold to the problem of construction of Hamiltonian-invariant generalized functions. For this we introduce the notion of generalized center of a Poisson algebra, which is the space of generalized Casimir functions. We study as the case when the set of test-objects for generalized functions is the space of compactly supported smooth functions, so the case when the test-objects are n-forms, where n is the dimension of the Poisson manifold. We describe the relations of this problem with the homological properties …
The generalization of Frobenius' theorem to foliations with singularities is usually attributed to Stefan and Sussmann, for their simultaneous discovery around 1973. However, their result is often referred to without caring much on the precise statement, as some sort of magic spell. This may be explained by the fact that the literature is not consensual on a unique formulation of the theorem, and because the history of the research leading to this result has been flawed by many claims that turned to be refuted some years later. This, together with the difficulty of doing proof-reading on this …
In 1996, Huisken-Yau proved that every three-dimensional Riemannian manifold can be uniquely foliated near infinity by stable closed surfaces of constant mean curvature (CMC) if it is asymptotically equal to the (spatial) Schwarzschild solution. Using their method, Rigger proved the same theorem for Riemannian manifolds being asymptotically equal to the (spatial) (Schwarzschild-)Anti-de Sitter solution. This was generalized to asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds by Neves-Tian, Chodosh, and the author at a later stage. In this work, we prove the reverse implication as the author already did in …
We introduce the concept of Roe C*-algebra for a locally compact groupoid whose unit space is in general not compact, and that is equipped with an appropriate coarse structure and Haar system. Using Connes' tangent groupoid method, we introduce an analytic index for an elliptic differential operator on a Lie groupoid equipped with additional metric structure, which takes values in the K-theory of the Roe C*-algebra. We apply our theory to derive a Lichnerowicz type vanishing result for foliations on open manifolds.
We consider Courant and Courant-Jacobi brackets on the stable tangent bundle $TM\times\mathds{R}^h$ of a differentiable manifold and corresponding Dirac, Dirac-Jacobi and generalized complex structures. We prove that Dirac and Dirac-Jacobi structures on $TM\times\mathds{R}^h$ can be prolonged to $TM\times\mathds{R}^k$, $k>h$, by means of commuting infinitesimal automorphisms. Some of the stable, generalized, complex structures are a natural generalization of the normal, almost contact structures; they are expressible by a system of tensors $(P,θ,F,Z_a,ξ^a)$ $(a=1,...,h)$, where $P$ is a bivect…
