A direct fit of the isoscalar spin-orbit (SO) and both isoscalar and isovector tensor coupling constants to the f5/2-f7/2 SO splittings in 40Ca, 56Ni, and 48Ca nuclei requires a drastic reduction of the isoscalar SO strength and strong attractive tensor coupling constants. The aim of this work is to address further consequences of these strong attractive tensor and weak SO fields on binding energies, nuclear deformability, and high-spin states. In particular, we show that contribution to the nuclear binding energy due to the tensor field shows generic magic structure with tensorial magic numbers at N(Z)=14, 32, 56, or 90 corresponding to the maximum spin-asymmetries in 1d5/2, 1f7/2-2p3/2, 1g9/2-2d5/2 and 1h11/2-2f7/2 single-particle configurations and that these numbers are smeared out by pairing correlations and deformation effects. We also examine the consequences of strong attractive tensor fields and weak SO interaction on nuclear stability at the drip lines, in particular close to the tensorial doubly magic nuclei and discuss the possibility of an entirely new tensor-force driven deformation effect.
The origin of the nuclear tensor interaction in the covariant energy density functional (EDF) is presented in this work, associated with the Fock diagrams of Lorentz scalar and vector couplings. With this newly obtained relativistic formalism of the nuclear tensor interaction, more distinct tensor effects are found in the Fock diagrams of the Lorentz scalar and vector couplings, as compared to the Lorentz pseudo-vector and tensor channels. A unified and self-consistent treatment on both the nuclear tensor and spin-orbit interactions, which dominate the spin-dependent features of the nuclear fo…
With the relativistic representation of the nuclear tensor force that is included automatically by the Fock diagrams, we explored the self-consistent tensor effects on the properties of nuclear matter system. The analysis were performed within the density-dependent relativistic Hartree-Fock (DDRHF) theory. The tensor force is found to notably influence the saturation mechanism, the equation of state and the symmetry energy of nuclear matter, as well as the neutron star properties. Without introducing any additional free parameters, the DDRHF approach paves a natural way to reveal the tensor ef…
The effects of a zero-range tensor component of the effective interaction on nuclear response functions are determined in the so-called RPA approach. Explicit formula in the case of symmetric homogeneous isotropic nuclear matter are given for each spin-isospin excitation channel. It is shown for a typical interaction with tensor couplings that the effects are quantitatively important, mainly in vector channels.
Using the Hellmann--Feynman theorem we analyze the contribution of the different terms of the nucleon-nucleon interaction to the nuclear symmetry energy $E_{sym}$ and the slope parameter $L$. The analysis is performed within the microscopic Brueckner--Hartree--Fock approach using the Argonne V18 potential plus the Urbana IX three-body force. We find that the main contribution to $E_{sym}$ and $L$ is due to the tensor component of the nuclear force.
A systematic and specific pattern due to the effects of the tensor forces is found in the evolution of spin-orbit splittings in neutron drops. This result is obtained from relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory using the bare nucleon-nucleon interaction. It forms an important guide for future microscopic derivations of relativistic and nonrelativistic nuclear energy density functionals.
We develop a new formalism to treat nuclear many-body systems using bare nucleon-nucleon interaction. It has become evident that the tensor interaction plays important role in nuclear many-body systems due to the role of the pion in strongly interacting system. We take the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) as a basic framework and add a tensor correlation operator acting on the AMD wave function using the concept of the tensor-optimized shell model (TOSM). We demonstrate a systematical and straightforward formulation utilizing the Gaussian integration and differentiation method and the …
The importance of the tensor force for nuclear structure has been recognized long ago. Recently, the interest for this topic has been revived by the study of the evolution of nuclear properties far from the stability line. However, in the context of the effective theories that describe medium-heavy nuclei, the role of the tensor force is still debated. This review focuses on ground-state properties like masses and deformation, on single-particle states, and on excited vibrational and rotational modes. The goal is to assess which properties, if any, can bring clear signatures of the tensor forc…
Using a relativistic Dirac-Brueckner analysis the pion contribution to the ground state energy of nuclear matter is studied. Evidence is presented that the role of the tensor force in the saturation mechanism is substantially reduced compared to its dominant role in a usual non-relativistic treatment. The reduction of the pion contribution in nuclear matter is due to many-body effects present in a relativistic treatment. In particular, we show that the damping of OPEP is actually due to the decrease of $M^*/M$ with increasing density.
The formalism of linear response theory for a Skyrme functional including spin-orbit and tensor terms is generalized to the case of infinite nuclear matter with arbitrary isospin asymmetry. Response functions are obtained by solving an algebraic system of equations, which is explicitly given. Spin-isospin strength functions are analyzed varying the conditions of density, momentum transfer, asymmetry and temperature. The presence of instabilities, including the spinodal one, is studied by means of the static susceptibility.
The dielectric function of nuclear matter excited by $ρNN$ tensor coupling has been studied in the framework of Finite temperature field theory. The induced current mechanism has been introduced to explain the three extrema on the dielectric function curve, of which one is in the space-like region and the other two are in the time-like region. It points out that the tensor coupling contributes much more large amplitude than the vector coupling and plays a more important role on the time-like region compared with its effect on the space-like region.
A direct fit of the isoscalar spin-orbit and both isoscalar and isovector tensor coupling constants to the f5/2-f7/2 SO splittings in 40Ca, 56Ni, and 48Ca requires: (i) a significant reduction of the standard isoscalar spin-orbit strength and (ii) strong attractive tensor coupling constants. The aim of this paper is to address the consequences of these strong attractive tensor and weak spin-orbit fields on total binding energies, two-neutron separation energies and nuclear deformability.
We present the formalism of linear response theory both at zero and finite temperature in the case of asymmetric nuclear matter excited by an isospin flip probe. The particle-hole interaction is derived from a general Skyrme functional that includes spin-orbit and tensor terms. Response functions are obtained by solving a closed algebraic system of equations. Spin strength functions are analyzed for typical values of density, momentum transfer, asymmetry and temperature.
We present a method to obtain response functions in the random phase approximation (RPA) based on a residual interaction described in terms of Landau parameters with central plus tensor contributions. The response functions keep the explicit momentum dependence of the RPA, in contrast with the traditional Landau approximation. Results for symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter are presented using Landau parameters derived from finite-range interactions, both phenomenological and microscopic. We study the convergence of response functions as the number of Landau parameters is increase…
The Unitary Correlation Operator Method (UCOM) is applied to realistic potentials. The effects of tensor correlations are investigated. The resulting phase shift equivalent correlated interactions are used in the no-core shell model for light nuclei and for mean-field calculations in the Fermionic Molecular Dynamics model for nuclei up to mass A=48.
The formalism of linear response theory for Skyrme forces including tensor terms presented in article [1] is generalized for the case of a Skyrme energy density functional in infinite matter. We also present analytical results for the odd-power sum rules, with particular attention to the inverse energy weighted sum rule, $M_{-1}$, as a tool to detect instabilities in Skyrme functionals.
We compute from chiral two- and three-body forces the complete quasiparticle interaction in symmetric nuclear matter up to twice nuclear matter saturation density. Second-order perturbative contributions that account for Pauli-blocking and medium polarization are included, allowing for an exploration of the full set of central and noncentral operator structures permitted by symmetries and the long-wavelength limit. At the Hartree-Fock level, the next-to-next-to-leading order three-nucleon force contributes to all noncentral interactions, and their strengths grow approximately linearly with the…
The spin-dependent nature of the nuclear tensor force is studied in details within the relativistic Hartree-Fock approach. The relativistic formalism for the tensor force is supplemented with an additional Lorentz-invariant tensor formalism in $σ$-scalar channel, so as to take into account almost fully the nature of the tensor force brought about by the Fock diagrams in realistic nuclei. Specifically, the tensor sum rules are tested for the spin and pseudo-spin partners with/without nodes, to further understand the tensor force nature within relativistic model. It is shown that the interferenc…
Background: The study of additional terms in functionals is relevant to better describe nuclear structure phenomenology. Among these terms, the tensor one is known to impact nuclear structure properties, especially in neutron-rich nuclei. However, its effect has not been studied on the whole nuclear chart yet. Purpose: The impact of terms corresponding to the tensor at the Hartree level, is studied for infinite nuclear matter as well as deformed nuclei, by developing new density-dependent functionals including these terms. In particular, we study in details the improvement such a term can brin…
We study the effects of the tensor force, present in modern effective nucleon-nucleon interactions, in the spin instability of nuclear and neutron matter. Stability conditions of the system against certain very low energy excitation modes are expressed in terms of Landau parameters. It is shown that in the spin case, the stability conditions are equivalent to the condition derived from the spin susceptibility, which is obtained as the zero-frequency and long-wavelength limit of the spin response function calculated in the Random Phase Approximation. Zero-range forces of the Skyrme type and fin…
We discuss the influence of different initial conditions for the stress tensor and the effect of bulk viscosity on the expansion and cooling of the fireball created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. In particular, we explore the evolution of longitudinal and transverse components of the pressure and the extent of dissipative entropy production in the one-dimensional, boost-invariant hydrodynamic model. We find that a bulk viscosity consistent with recent estimates from lattice QCD further slows the equilibration of the system, however it does not significantly increase the entropy produced…
The formalism of the linear response for the Skyrme energy density functional including tensor terms derived in articles [1,2] for nuclear matter is applied here to the case of pure neutron matter. As in article [2] we present analytical results for the response function in all channels, the Landau parameters and the odd-power sum rules. Special emphasis is given to the inverse energy weighted sum rule because it can be used to detect non physical instabilities. Typical examples are discussed and numerical results shown. Moreover, as a direct application, neutrino propagation in neutron matter…
The M3Y-type semi-realistic interaction is applied to deformed nuclei for the first time. The constrained Hartree-Fock calculations assuming axial symmetry are implemented for the $N=20$ isotones $^{30}$Ne, $^{32}$Mg, $^{34}$Si and the $N=28$ isotones $^{40}$Mg, $^{42}$Si, $^{44}$S with the M3Y-P6 interaction. The results match the experimental data well. Effects of the realistic tensor force on the nuclear quadrupole deformation are investigated in relation to the loss of the $N=20$ and $28$ magic numbers. The tensor force is confirmed to favor the deformation for the $N=28$ nuclei owing to t…
Effects of the short-range tensor interaction on the density-dependence of nuclear symmetry energy are examined by applying an approximate expression for the second-order tensor contribution to the symmetry energy derived earlier by G.E. Brown and R. Machleidt. It is found that the uncertainty in the short-range tensor force leads directly to a divergent high-density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy.
Tensor representation (TR) for wave function (WF) of three-nucleon bound state with the total angular momentum I=1/2 is discussed. The WF in TR has 16 complex components depending on vectors of relative momenta. Constraints on the WF imposed by requirements of invariance with respect to space inversion and time reversal are studied. Both parity-even and parity-odd components of the 3N bound state are constructed using 16 scalar functions. The arguments of the functions are magnitudes of relative momenta and scalar product of the momenta. With nuclear forces being time-reversal invariant these …
A fully-antisymmetrized random phase approximation calculation employing the continued fraction technique is performed to study nuclear matter response functions with the finite range Gogny force. The most commonly used parameter sets of this force, as well as some recent generalizations that include the tensor terms are considered and the corresponding response functions are shown. The calculations are performed at the first and second order in the continued fraction expansion and the explicit expressions for the second order tensor contributions are given. Comparison between first and second…
The Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov (HFB) plus proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (pnQRPA) approach based on Skyrme interaction is applied to study the nuclear $β^+$/EC decay for nuclei near the proton magic numbers $Z=$20, 28, and 50. With properly selected Skyrme interactions that include the tensor terms, and the $T=0$ pairing interaction, the experimental $β^+$/EC decay half-lives of these nuclei can be systematically reproduced quite well. It is shown that the tensor and $T=0$ pairing interactions play different roles in different nuclei. The specific effect is relevant to th…
Employing the PHFB model, nuclear transition matrix elements $M^{\left( K\right) }$ for the neutrinoless double-$β^{-} $ decay of $\ ^{76}$Ge and $^{82}$Se isotopes are calculated within mechanisms involving light as well as heavy Majorana neutrinos, and classical Majorons by considering the spin-tensor decomposition of realistic KUO and empirical JUN45 effective two-body interaction. It is noticed that the effects due to the SRC on NTMEs $M^{\left( 0ν\right) }$ and $M^{\left( 0N\right) }$ due to the exchange of light and heavy Majorana neutrinos, respectively, is maximally incorporated by the…
The effect of tensor force on the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy has been investigated within the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach. It is shown that the tensor force manifests its effect via the tensor $^3SD_1$ channel. The density dependence of symmetry energy $E_{sym}$ turns out to be determined essentially by the tensor force from the $π$ meson and $ρ$ meson exchanges via the $^3SD_1$ coupled channel. Increasing the strength of the tensor component due to the $ρ$-meson exchange tends to enhance the repulsion of the equation of state of symmetric nuclear matter…
Role of the Landau-Migdal parameters with the pseudovector ($g_a$) and the tensor coupling ($g_t$) is examined for the giant Gamow-Teller (GT) states in the relativistic random phase approximation (RPA). The excitation energy is dominated by both $g_a$ and $g_t$ in a similar way, while the GT strength is independent of $g_a$ and $g_t$ in the RPA of the nucleon space, and is quenched, compared with that in non-relativistic one. The coupling of the particle-hole states with nucleon-antinucleon states is expected to quench the GT strength further through $g_a$.
The nuclear time-dependent Hartree-Fock model formulated in the three-dimensional space, based on the full Skyrme energy density functional and complemented with the tensor force,is presented for the first time. Full self-consistency is achieved by the model. The application to the isovector giant dipole resonance is discussed in the linear limit, ranging from spherical nuclei (16O, 120Sn) to systems displaying axial or triaxial deformation (24Mg, 28Si, 178Os, 190W, 238U). Particular attention is paid to the spin-dependent terms from the central sector of the functional, recently included toget…
We analyze microscopic many-body calculations of the nuclear symmetry energy and its density dependence. The calculations are performed in the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock and the Self-Consistent Green's Functions methods. Within Brueckner-Hartree-Fock, the Hellmann-Feynman theorem gives access to the kinetic energy contribution as well as the contributions of the different components of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. The tensor component gives the largest contribution to the symmetry energy. The decomposition of the symmetry energy in a kinetic part and a potential energy part pr…
The nucleon form factors of the energy-momentum tensor are studied in nuclear medium in the framework of the in-medium modified Skyrme model. We obtain a negative D-term, in agreement with results from other approaches, and find that medium effects make the value of d_1 more negative.
We study the symmetric nuclear matter using bare nucleon-nucleon ($NN$) interactions with finite particle-number approach within finite cubic boxes. Due to the $NN$ correlations originating from bare $NN$ interaction, two nucleons can be excited to the high-momentum region, leading to the increase of the kinetic energy in nuclear matter. We further consider the spin excitations in the nucleon pairs, where the spin of the two nucleons are changed, and this excitation is important for the tensor correlation. The unitary correlation operator method (UCOM) is used to treat the short-range correlat…
[Background] While the tensor interaction has been shown to significantly affect the nuclear structure of exotic nuclei, its influence on nuclear reactions has only recently been investigated. The primary reason for this neglect is the fact that most studies of nuclear dynamics do not include the tensor force at all in their models. Indeed, only a few Skyrme parametrizations consider the tensor interaction in parameter determination. With modern research facilities extending our ability to probe exotic nuclei, a correct description of nuclear dynamics and heavy-ion fusion is vital to both supp…
Variational calculations of symmetric nuclear matter and pure neutron matter with the tensor-optimized Fermi Sphere (TOFS) method: many-body effects and short-range correlation
A new Skyrme functional has been developed with tensor term guided by ab initio relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) studies on neutron-proton drops. Instead of extracting information on the tensor force from experimental single-particle energy splittings, the RBHF calculations do not contain beyond mean-field effects such as particle-vibration coupling and therefore the information on the tensor force can be obtained without ambiguities. The new functional gives a good description of nuclear ground-state properties as well as various giant resonances. The description for the evolution o…
The tensor optimized Fermi sphere (TOFS) method is applied first for the study of the property of nuclear matter using the Argonne V4' $NN$ potential. In the TOFS method, the correlated nuclear matter wave function is taken to be a power-series-type of the correlation function $F$, where $F$ can induce central, spin-isospin, tensor, etc.~correlations. This expression has been ensured by a cluster expansion theory. In the TOFS calculation, we take into account the contributions from all the many body terms arising from the product of the nuclear-matter Hamiltonian $\mathcal{H}$ and $F$. It is f…
The short-range and tensor correlations associated to realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions induce a population of high-momentum components in the many-body nuclear wave function. We study the impact of such high-momentum components on bulk observables associated to isospin asymmetric matter. The kinetic part of the symmetry energy is strongly reduced by correlations when compared to the non-interacting case. The origin of this behavior is elucidated using realistic interactions with different short-range and tensor structures.
Quantitative information on the tensor force induced isospin-dependence of short-range nucleon-nucleon correlation (SRC) extracted from recent J-Lab experiments was used in constraining the high-momentum tails of single nucleon momentum distributions in both symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) and pure neutron matter (PNM). Its effects on the Equations of State of SNM and PNM as well as the nuclear symmetry energy are investigated. It is found that the tensor force induced isospin-dependence of SRC softens significantly the nuclear symmetry energy especially at supra-saturation densities.
Calculations of nuclear masses, using nuclear density functional theory, are presented for even-even nuclei spanning the nuclear chart. The resulting binding energy differences can be interpreted in terms of valence proton-neutron interactions. These are compared globally, regionally, and locally with empirical values. Overall, excellent agreement is obtained. Discrepancies highlight neglected degrees of freedom and can point to improved density functionals.
We study the tensor-optimized antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (TOAMD) as a successive variational method in many-body systems with strong interaction for nuclei. In TOAMD, the correlation functions for the tensor force and the short-range repulsion and their multiples are operated to the AMD state as the variational wave function. The total wave function is expressed as the sum of all the components and the variational space can be increased successively with the multiple correlation functions to achieve convergence. All the necessary matrix elements of many-body operators, consisting of th…
We present some new results on heavy-element nuclear-structure properties calculated on the basis of the finite-range droplet model and folded-Yukawa single-particle potential. Specifically, we discuss calculations of nuclear ground-state masses and microscopic corrections, $α$-decay properties, $β$-decay properties, fission potential-energy surfaces, and spontaneous-fission half-lives. These results, obtained in a global nuclear-structure approach, are particularly reliable for describing the stability properties of the heaviest elements.
The impact of applying state-of-the-art tensor factorization techniques to modern nuclear Hamiltonians derived from chiral effective field theory is investigated. Subsequently, the error induced by the tensor decomposition of the input Hamiltonian on ground-state energies of closed-shell nuclei calculated via second-order many-body perturbation theory is benchmarked. With the aid of the factorized Hamiltonian, the second-order perturbative correction to ground-state energies is decomposed and the scaling properties of the underlying tensor network are discussed. The employed tensor formats are…
We introduce a finite-range pseudopotential built as an expansion in derivatives up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) and we calculate the corresponding nonlocal energy density functional (EDF). The coupling constants of the nonlocal EDF, for both finite nuclei and infinite nuclear matter, are expressed through the parameters of the pseudopotential. All central, spin-orbit, and tensor terms of the pseudopotential are derived both in the spherical-tensor and Cartesian representation. At next-to-leading order (NLO), we also derive relations between the nonlocal EDF expressed in …
We have investigated the effect of tensor correlations on the depletion of nuclear Fermi sea in symmetric nuclear matter within the framework of the extended Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach by adopting the AV18 two-body interaction and a microscopic three-body force. The contributions from various partial wave channels including the isospin-singlet T=0 channel, the isospin-triplet T=1 channel and the T=0 tensor 3SD1 channel have been calculated. The T=0 neutron-proton correlations play a dominated role in causing the depletion of nuclear Fermi sea. The T=0 correlation-induced depletion turns o…
With the global color symmetry model being extended to finite chemical potential, we study the density dependence of the local and nonlocal scalar quark condensates in nuclear matter. The calculated results indicate that the quark condensates increase smoothly with the increasing of nuclear matter density before the critical value (about 12$ρ_0$) is reached. It also manifests that the chiral symmetry is restored suddenly as the density of nuclear matter reaches its critical value. Meanwhile, the nonlocal quark condensate in nuclear matter changes nonmonotonously against the space-time distance…
The effects of magnetic interaction between vector mesons and nucleons on the propagation (mass and width) of the $ρ$-meson in particular moving through very dense nuclear matter is studied and the modifications, qualitative and quantitative, due to the relevant collective modes (zero-sound and plasma frequencies) of the medium discussed. It is shown that the $ρ$-mesons produced in high-energy nuclear collisions will be longitudinally polarized in the region of sufficiently dense nuclear matter, in the presence of such an interaction.
The limits on time-reversal invariant tensor-type weak currents from nuclear and neutron $β$ decays are evaluated including most recent experimental data. We find that $ -0.14 \times 10^{-2} < (C_T + C^\prime_T)/C_A < 1.4 \times 10^{-2} $ and $ -0.16 < (C_T - C^\prime_T)/C_A < 0.16$ (90% C.L.), while for the case $C_T = C^\prime_T$ the limits are $ | C_T/C_A | < 3.7 \times 10^{-3} $. These limits are shown to be more stringent than those from recent measurements of the radiative pion decay. In addition, the sensitivity of future $10^{-3}$-level correlation measurements is investigated.
A new effective interaction PKA1 with $ρ$-tensor couplings for the density-dependent relativistic Hartree-Fock (DDRHF) theory is presented. It is obtained by fitting selected empirical ground state and shell structure properties. It provides satisfactory descriptions of nuclear matter and the ground state properties of finite nuclei at the same quantitative level as recent DDRHF and RMF models. Significant improvement on the single-particle spectra is also found due to the inclusion of $ρ$-tensor couplings. As a result, PKA1 cures a common disease of the existing DDRHF and RMF Lagrangians, nam…
We recently proposed a new variational theory of "tensor-optimized antisymmetrized molecular dynamics" (TOAMD), which treats the strong interaction explicitly for finite nuclei [T. Myo et al., Prog. Theor. Exp. Phys. 2015, 073D02 (2015)]. In TOAMD, the correlation functions for the tensor force and the short-range repulsion and their multiple products are successively operated to the AMD state. The correlated Hamiltonian is expanded into many-body operators by using the cluster expansion and all the resulting operators are taken into account in the calculation without any truncation. We show d…
We present the evolution of the shell structure of nuclei in Hartree-Fock calculations using Skyrme's density-dependent effective nucleon-nucleon interaction. The role of the tensor part of the Skyrme interaction to the Hartree-Fock spin-orbit splitting in spherical spin unsaturated nuclei is reanalyzed. The contribution of a finite range tensor force to the spin-orbit splitting in closed shell nuclei is calculated. It is found that the exact matrix elements of a Gaussian and of a one-pion exchange tensor potential could be written as a product Skyrme's short range expression times a suppressi…
Obtaining tensor-polarized nuclei with spin $S\ge1$ via spin filtering upon nuclear beam transmission through an unpolarized target (spin dichroism effect)
We present a quantitative study of the role played by different components characterizing the nucleon-nucleon interaction in the evolution of the nuclear shell structure. It is based on the spin-tensor decomposition of an effective two-body shell-model interaction and the subsequent study of effective single-particle energy variations in a series of isotopes or isotones. The technique allows to separate unambiguously contributions of the central, vector and tensor components of the realistic effective interaction. We show that while the global variation of the single-particle energies is due t…
