We argue that certain specific gluon excitations, other than conventional glueballs, can propagate freely outside of hadrons and glueballs. We begin with the result that the Abelian generators of $SU(N)$ QCD can be meaningfully isolated by the Cho-Faddeev-Niemi-Shabanov decomposition. It has already been shown by Cho \emph{et. al.} that the corresponding gluon excitations have a gauge transformation whose form indicates that they are physical entities of neutral colour charge. We contend that this colour neutrality permits them to propagate freely, albeit with an effective mass due to interaction with the confining chromomonopole condensate. According to the dual-superconductor model of the QCD vacuum, this mass has an upper bound of $k_B T_c \sqrt{2}$. We conclude with some expected experimental signatures.
We present the colourful antenna subtraction method, a reformulation of the antenna subtraction scheme for next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) calculations in QCD. The aim of this new approach is to achieve a general and process-independent construction of the subtraction infrastructure at NNLO. We rely on the predictability of the infrared singularity structure of one- and two-loop amplitudes in colour space to generate virtual subtraction terms and, subsequently, we define an automatable procedure to systematically infer the expression of the real subtraction terms, guided by the correspond…
We report on the calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to the production of two gluonic jets at hadron colliders. In previous work, we discussed gluonic dijet production in the gluon-gluon channel. Here, for the first time, we update our numerical results to include the leading colour contribution to the production of two gluonic jets via quark-antiquark scattering.
There has been much recent interest in long-lived massive particles at the LHC, understood as those with lifetimes between tens of micrometers and several meters. In this context we consider the possibility of long-lived electroweak singlet scalars charged under colour $\mathrm{SU}(3)$ with masses near a TeV. The shortest lifetime of interest is already longer than typical hadronisation scales. These exotic new particles would therefore appear as colour singlet bound states of the new scalars with quarks and gluons and it is their colour charge that prevents them from decaying. In particular w…
Feynman diagrams with two real partons contributing to the next-to-leading-order singlet gluon-quark DGLAP kernel are analysed. The infra-red singularities of unintegrated distributions are examined numerically. The analytical formulae are also given in some cases. The role of the colour coherence effects is found to be crucial for cancellations of the double- and single-logarithmic infra-red singularities.
At small inter-parton distances, double parton distributions receive their dominant contribution from the splitting of a single parton. We compute this mechanism at next-to-leading order in perturbation theory for all colour configurations of the observed parton pair. Rapidity divergences are handled either by using spacelike Wilson lines or by applying the delta regulator. We investigate the behaviour of the two-loop contributions in different kinematic limits, and we illustrate their impact in different channels.
We revisit diffractive and exclusive W production at hadron colliders in different models for soft colour exchanges. The process pp to p[WX]p, and in particular a W charge asymmetry, has been suggested as a way to discriminate diffractive processes as being due to pomeron exchange in Regge phenomenology or QCD-based colour reconnection models. Our detailed analysis of the latter models at LHC energies shows, however, that they give similar results as pomeron models for very leading protons and central W production, including a vanishing W charge asymmetry. We demonstrate that soft colour excha…
We study next-to-leading-power (NLP) threshold corrections in colour-singlet production processes, with particular emphasis on Drell-Yan (DY) and single-Higgs production. We assess the quality of the partonic and hadronic threshold expansions for each process up to NNLO. We determine numerically the NLP leading-logarithmic (LL) resummed contribution in addition to the leading-power next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (LP NNLL) resummed DY and Higgs cross sections, matched to NNLO. We find that the inclusion of NLP logarithms is numerically more relevant than increasing the precision to N$^3$LL…
We present the combination of fully differential cross sections for colour-singlet production processes at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD obtained with MATRIX and all-order resummation through RadISH. This interface allows us to achieve unprecedented accuracy for various transverse observables in $2 \rightarrow 2$ production processes. As an important application we consider $W^+ W^-$ production at the LHC, more precisely the full leptonic process $pp\to \ell^+\ell^{\prime\, -}ν_{\ell}{\barν}_{\ell^\prime}+X$ with $\ell'\neq\ell$, and we present resummed predictions for differential …
We present the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to dijet production in the purely gluonic channel retaining the full dependence on the number of colours. The sub-leading colour contribution in this channel first appears at NNLO and, as expected, increases the NNLO correction by around 10% and exhibits a pT dependence, rising from 8% at low pT to 15% at high pT . The present calculation demonstrates the utility of the antenna subtraction method for computing the full colour NNLO corrections to dijet production at the Large Hadron Collider.
$SU(N_c)$ colour-singlet restriction, along with flavour and spin symmetry, on thermal partonic ensemble is shown to recombine the partons with internal colour structure into colour-singlet multi-quark clusters which can be identified with various hadronic modes at a given temperature. This provides a possible basis for recombination model for hadronization of quark-gluon plasma. This also leads to a natural explanation for the ratio of (anti)protons to pions and the quark number scaling of the elliptic flow coefficient in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.
Confinement indicates an asymptotic quark state not observable except its energy is zero. Unitarity indicates that the total probability of a definite state of quark system to transit to any final state is exactly one. This talk reviews some important conclusions/predictions from the basic properties like unitarity of the combination model, as addressed by the title. We also in the Postscript section address the bottom quark energy loss. In the discussions around the dinner table in the Rencontre, the author combined the large transverse momentum J/Psi suppression and the contribution to J/Psi…
We consider the production of a colourless system at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling constant $α_s$. We impose a transverse-momentum cutoff, qtcut, on the colourless final state and we compute the power corrections for the inclusive cross section in the cutoff, up to the fourth power. The study of the dependence of the cross section on qtcut allows for an understanding of its behaviour at the boundaries of the phase space, giving hints on the structure at all orders in $α_s$ and on the identification of universal patterns. The knowledge of such power corrections is also a required…
We show that the colour-singlet contributions to the hadroproduction of J/psi in association with a W boson are sizable, if not dominant over the colour-octet contributions. They are of two kinds, sg -> J/psi + c + W at alpha^3_S alpha and q q'-bar -> gamma*/Z* W -> J/psi W at order alpha^3. These have not been considered in the literature until now. Our conclusion is that the hadroproduction of a J/psi in association with a W boson cannot be claimed as a clean probe of the colour-octet mechanism. The rate are small even at the LHC and it will be very delicate to disentangle the colour-octet c…
We study hadronic decays $χ_{cJ}\rightarrow K^*(892)\bar{K} $ within the effective field theory framework. We consider the colour-singlet and colour-octet contributions and study their properties using (p)NRQCD effective theory. We show that infrared singularities in collinear integrals of the colour-singlet amplitudes can be absorbed into the renormalisation of the colour-octet matrix elements. The heavy quark spin symmetry allows us to establish a relation between the colour-octet matrix elements and to define the spin symmetry breaking corrections which are free from infrared singularities.…
We present a discussion of radiative decays $χ_{cJ}\rightarrowγρ(ω, ϕ)$. The decay amplitudes are computed within the QCD factorisation framework. NRQCD has been used in the heavy meson sector as well as a collinear expansion in order to describe the overlap with light mesons in the final state. The colour-singlet contributions to all helicity amplitudes have been computed using the light-cone distribution amplitudes of twist-2 and twist-3. All obtained expressions are well defined at least in the leading-order approximation. The colour-octet contributions have also been studied in the Coulomb…
The current limits for fourth generation quarks allows to expect their mass of the order of 500 GeV. In this mass region for quark-anti-quark pair the additional Yukawa-type attraction due to Higgs mechanism is expected to emerge. This Higgs induced attraction greatly exceeds strong interaction between quarks and leads to the formation of bound states in both colour octet $S^{(8)}$ and singlet $S^{(1)}$ states. In the key of recent works on significance of colour octet channel for production of colour singlet state of fourth generation $Q\bar{Q}$ we calculated the binding energies for both oct…
We examine the large-x QCD evolution of the twist-three gluonic-pole strength defining an effective T-odd Sivers function, where evolution of the T-even transverse-spin DIS structure function g2 is multiplicative. The result corresponds to a colour-factor modified spin-averaged twist-two evolution.
In this talk we describe a procedure for isolating the infrared singularities present in gluonic scattering amplitudes at next-to-next-to-leading order. We use the antenna subtraction framework which has been successfully applied to the calculation of NNLO corrections to the 3-jet cross section and related event shape distributions in electron-positron annihilation. Here we consider processes with coloured particles in the initial state, and in particular two-jet production at hadron colliders such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We construct a subtraction term that describes the single an…
We improve and extend our study of the complex in-medium heavy quark potential and its Debye mass $m_D$ in a gluonic medium with a finer scan around the deconfinement transition and newly generated ensembles closer to the thermodynamic limit. On the lattices with larger physical volume, Re[V] shows signs of screening, i.e. a finite $m_D$, only in the deconfined phase, reminiscent of a genuine phase transition. Consistently Im[V] exhibits nonzero values also only above $T_C$. We compare the behavior of Re[V] with the color singlet free-energies that have been used historically to extract the De…
