The Ce compounds CeCoIn$_5$ and CeRhIn$_5$ are ideal model systems to study the competition of antiferromagnetism (AF) and superconductivity (SC). Here we discuss the pressure--temperature and magnetic field phase diagrams of both compounds. In CeRhIn$_5$ the interesting observation is that in zero magnetic field a coexistence AF+SC phase exist inside the AF phase below the critical pressure $p_{\rm c}^\star \approx 2$ GPa. Above $p_{\rm c}^\star$ AF is suppressed in zero field but can be re-induced by applying a magnetic field. The collapse of AF under pressure coincides with the abrupt change of the Fermi surface.
In CeCoIn$_5$ a new phase appears at low temperatures and high magnetic field (LTHF) which vanishes at the upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$. In both compounds the paramagnetic pair breaking effect dominates at low temperature. We discuss the evolution of the upper critical field under high pressure of both compounds and propose a simple picture of the glue of reentrant magnetism to the upper critical field in order to explain the interplay of antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity.
We present core level non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS) data of the heavy fermion compounds CeCoIn$_5$ and CeRhIn$_5$ measured at the Ce $N_{4,5}$-edges. The higher than dipole transitions in NIXS allow determining the orientation of the $Γ_7$ crystal-field ground-state orbital within the unit cell. The crystal-field parameters of the Ce$M$In$_5$ compounds and related substitution phase diagrams have been investigated in great detail in the past; however, whether the ground-state wavefunction is the $Γ_7^+$ ($x^2\,-\,y^2$) or $Γ_7^-$ ($xy$ orientation) remained undetermined. We sh…
Gapless Magnetic and Quasiparticle Excitations due to the Coexistence of Antiferromagnetism and Superconductivity in CeRhIn$_5$ : A study of $^{115}$In-NQR under Pressure
To study the mutual interaction between unconventional superconductivity and magnetic order through an interface, we fabricate Kondo superlattices consisting of alternating layers of heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ and antiferromagnetic (AFM) heavy-fermion metal CeIn$_3$. The strength of the AFM fluctuations is tuned by applying hydrostatic pressure to CeCoIn$_5(m)$/CeIn$_3(n)$ superlattices with $m$ and $n$ unit-cell-thick layers of CeCoIn$_5$ and CeIn$_3$, respectively. Superconductivity in CeCoIn$_5$ and AFM order in CeIn$_3$ coexist in spatially separated layers. At ambient pressur…
Unconventional superconductivity and magnetism are intertwined on a microscopic level in a wide class of materials, including high-$T_c$ cuprates, iron pnictides, and heavy-fermion compounds. A new approach to this most fundamental and hotly debated subject focuses on the role of interactions between superconducting electrons and bosonic fluctuations at the interface between adjacent layers in heterostructures. A recent state-of-the-art molecular-beam-epitaxy technique has enabled us to fabricate superlattices consisting of different heavy-fermion compounds with atomic thickness. These Kondo s…
We have performed de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) measurements of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ down to 2 mK above the upper critical field. We find that the dHvA amplitudes show an anomalous suppression, concomitantly with a shift of the dHvA frequency, below the transition temperature $T_{\rm n}=20$ mK. We suggest that the change is owing to magnetic breakdown caused by a field-induced antiferromagnetic (AFM) state emerging below $T_{\rm n}$, revealing the origin of the field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) in CeCoIn$_5$. The field dependence of $T_{\rm n}$ is found to be very w…
Conventional, thermally-driven continuous phase transitions are described by universal critical behaviour that is independent of the specific microscopic details of a material. However, many current studies focus on materials that exhibit quantum-driven continuous phase transitions (quantum critical points, or QCPs) at absolute zero temperature. The classification of such QCPs and the question of whether they show universal behaviour remain open issues. Here we report measurements of heat capacity and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations at low temperatures across a field-induced antiferroma…
We investigate the properties of the coexistence phase of itinerant antiferromagnetism and nodal $d$-wave superconductivity (Q-phase) discovered in heavy fermion CeCoIn5 under applied magnetic field. We solve the minimal model that includes $d$-wave superconductivity and underlying magnetic correlations in real space to elucidate the structure of the $Q$-phase in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field. We further focus on the role of magnetic impurities, and show that they nucleate the Q-phase at lower magnetic fields. Our most crucial finding is that, even at zero applied field,…
Pressure phase diagram and quantum criticality of CePt2In7 single crystals
