The effectiveness of using model sparsity as a priori information when solving linear inverse problems is studied. We investigate the reconstruction quality of such a method in the non-idealized case and compute some typical recovery errors (depending on the sparsity of the desired solution, the number of data, the noise level on the data, and various properties of the measurement matrix); they are compared to known theoretical bounds and illustrated on a magnetic tomography example.
Sparse recovery is widely applied in many fields, since many signals or vectors can be sparsely represented under some frames or dictionaries. Most of fast algorithms at present are based on solving $l^0$ or $l^1$ minimization problems and they are efficient in sparse recovery. However, compared with the practical results, the theoretical sufficient conditions on the sparsity of the signal for $l^0$ or $l^1$ minimization problems and algorithms are too strict. \par In many applications, there are signals with certain structures as piecewise sparsity. Piecewise sparsity means that the sparse si…
In this survey we describe some modifications of Prony's method. In particular, we consider the recovery of general expansions into eigenfunctions of linear differential operators of first order and show, how these expansions can be recovered from function samples using generalized shift operators. We derive an ESPRIT-like algorithm for the generalized recovery method and show, that this approach can be directly used to reconstruct classical exponential sums from non-equispaced data. Furthermore, we derive a modification of Prony's method for sparse approximation with exponential sums which le…

In this paper, we consider the sparse phase retrieval problem, recovering an $s$-sparse signal $\bm{x}^{\natural}\in\mathbb{R}^n$ from $m$ phaseless samples $y_i=|\langle\bm{x}^{\natural},\bm{a}_i\rangle|$ for $i=1,\ldots,m$. Existing sparse phase retrieval algorithms are usually first-order and hence converge at most linearly. Inspired by the hard thresholding pursuit (HTP) algorithm in compressed sensing, we propose an efficient second-order algorithm for sparse phase retrieval. Our proposed algorithm is theoretically guaranteed to give an exact sparse signal recovery in finite (in particula…
We present a novel stagewise strategy for improving greedy algorithms for sparse recovery. We demonstrate its efficiency both for synthesis and analysis sparse priors, where in both cases we demonstrate its computational efficiency and competitive reconstruction accuracy. In the synthesis case, we also provide theoretical guarantees for the signal recovery that are on par with the existing perfect reconstruction bounds for the relaxation-based solvers and other sophisticated greedy algorithms.
In this paper, we present modifications of the iterative hard thresholding (IHT) method for recovery of jointly row-sparse and low-rank matrices. In particular a Riemannian version of IHT is considered which significantly reduces computational cost of the gradient projection in the case of rank-one measurement operators, which have concrete applications in blind deconvolution. Experimental results are reported that show near-optimal recovery for Gaussian and rank-one measurements, and that adaptive stepsizes give crucial improvement. A Riemannian proximal gradient method is derived for the spe…
We recover jump-sparse and sparse signals from blurred incomplete data corrupted by (possibly non-Gaussian) noise using inverse Potts energy functionals. We obtain analytical results (existence of minimizers, complexity) on inverse Potts functionals and provide relations to sparsity problems. We then propose a new optimization method for these functionals which is based on dynamic programming and the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). A series of experiments shows that the proposed method yields very satisfactory jump-sparse and sparse reconstructions, respectively. We highlig…
Motivated by the problem of integer sparse recovery we study the following question. Let $A$ be an $m \times d$ integer matrix whose entries are in absolute value at most $k$. How large can be $d=d(m,k)$ if all $m \times m$ submatrices of $A$ are non-degenerate? We obtain new upper and lower bounds on $d$ and answer a special case of the problem by Brass, Moser and Pach on covering $m$-dimensional $k \times \cdots\times k$ grid by linear subspaces.
In this paper, we propose a novel sparse recovery method based on the generalized error function. The penalty function introduced involves both the shape and the scale parameters, making it very flexible. The theoretical analysis results in terms of the null space property, the spherical section property and the restricted invertibility factor are established for both constrained and unconstrained models. The practical algorithms via both the iteratively reweighted $\ell_1$ and the difference of convex functions algorithms are presented. Numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the im…
