The combined analysis of polarized DIS and SIDIS data is performed in NLO QCD. The new parametrization on polarized PDFs is constructed. The uncertainties on PDFs and their first moments are estimated applying the modified Hessian method.
The especial attention is paid to the impact of novel SIDIS data on the polarized distributions of light sea and strange quarks. In particular, the important question of polarized sea symmetry is studied in comparison with the latest results on this subject.
The semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) process is considered. It is proposed a theoretical procedure allowing the direct extraction from the SIDIS data of the first moments of the polarized valence distributions and of the first moment difference of the light sea quark polarized distributions in the next to leading (NLO) QCD order. The validity of the procedure is confirmed by the respective simulations.
Method of polarized semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) data analysis in the next to leading order (NLO) QCD is developed. Within the method one first directly extracts in NLO few first truncated (available to measurement) Mellin moments of the quark helicity distributions. Second, using these moments as an input to the proposed modification of the Jacobi polynomial expansion method (MJEM), one eventually reconstructs the local quark helicity distributions themselves. All numerical tests demonstrate that MJEM allows us to reproduce with the high precision the input local distribut…

We consider semi-inclusive unpolarized DIS for the production of charged Kaons and the different possibilities, both in LO and NLO, to test the conventionally used assumptions s-\bar s=0, Δs-Δ\bar s=0 and D_d^{K+ - K-}=0. The considered tests have the advantage that they do not require any knowledge of the fragmentation functions.
We present a next-to-leading order (NLO) computation of the full set of polarized and unpolarized electroweak semi-inclusive DIS (SIDIS) structure functions, whose knowledge is crucial for a precise extraction of polarized parton distributions. We focus on the phenomenology of the polarized structure functions for the kinematical conditions that could be reached in an Electron-Ion-Collider. We show that the NLO corrections are sizeable, particularly in the small-$x$ range. We test the sensitivity of these structure functions on certain quark distributions and compare it to the situation of inc…
The results of our new QCD analysis of helicity parton distributions of the nucleon at full next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in the fixed-flavor number scheme will be presented. Performing a combined QCD fit on the global sets of latest inclusive and the semi-inclusive polarized deep inelastic scattering data, we are able to extract new polarized parton distribution functions (PPDFs) at the input scale $Q_{0}^2=1$ GeV$^2$. Particulary, we have calculated PPDFs considering light sea-quark decomposition and the results are compared with the experimental data and the most precise theoretical …
In this paper, we present a QCD analysis to extract the Fragmentation Functions (FFs) of unidentified light charged hadron entitled as SHK22.h from high-energy lepton-lepton annihilation and lepton-hadron scattering data sets. This analysis includes the data from all available single inclusive electron-positron annihilation (SIA) processes and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) measurements for the unidentified light charged hadron productions. The SIDIS data which has been measured by the COMPASS experiment could allow the flavor dependence of the FFs to be well constrained. We …
We present MAPFF1.0, a determination of unpolarised charged-pion fragmentation functions (FFs) from a set of single-inclusive $e^+e^-$ annihilation and lepton-nucleon semi-inclusive deep-inelastic-scattering (SIDIS) data. FFs are parametrised in terms of a neural network (NN) and fitted to data exploiting the knowledge of the analytic derivative of the NN itself w.r.t. its free parameters. Uncertainties on the FFs are determined by means of the Monte Carlo sampling method properly accounting for all sources of experimental uncertainties, including that of parton distribution functions. Theoret…
We consider semi-inclusive unpolarized DIS for the production of charged kaons and the different possibilities to test the conventionally used assumptions s-\bar=0 and D_d^{K^+-K^-}=0. The considered tests have the advantage that they do not require any knowledge of the fragmentation functions. We also show that measurements of both charged and neutral kaons would allow the determination of the kaon FFs D_q^{K^++K^-} solely from SIDIS measurements, and discuss the comparison of (D_u-D_d)^{K^+-K^-} obtained independently in SIDIS and e+e- reactions. All analysis are performed in LO and NLO in Q…
COMPASS final results on multiplicities of charged hadrons and of identified pions and kaons produced in the deep inelastic muon scattering off an isoscalar target are presented and compared to HERMES results. Measurements are done in bins of x, y and z in a wide kinematic range. The hadron and pion data show a good agreement with (N)LO QCD expectations. The kaon data are long awaited for since they are needed to extract kaon fragmentation functions, a crucial ingredient in solving the strange quark polarisation puzzle. COMPASS results for kaons differ from the expectations of the old NLO DSS …
We perform global fit to the quark Sivers function within the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization formalism in QCD. We simultaneously fit Sivers asymmetry data from Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) at COMPASS, HERMES, and JLab, from Drell-Yan lepton pair production at COMPASS, and from $W/Z$ boson at RHIC. This extraction is performed at next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-next-to leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We find excellent agreement between our extracted asymmetry and the experimental data for SIDIS and Drell-Yan lepton pair production, while tensi…
The results of SIDIS experiments concerning the first moments of the polarized quark distributions are considered. The possible reasons of the deviation from the fundamental restrictions such as the Bjorken sum rule and the ways to properly improve the analysis of measured SIDIS asymmetries are discussed. The possibility of broken polarized sea scenario is analysed.
A new combined NLO QCD analysis of the polarized inclusive and semi-inclusive DIS data is presented. In contrast to previous combined analyses, the 1/Q^2 terms (kinematic - target mass corrections, and dynamic - higher twist corrections) in the expression for the nucleon spin structure function g1 are taken into account. The new COMPASS data are included in the analysis. The impact of the semi-inclusive (SIDIS) data on the polarized parton densities (PDFs) and on the higher twist corrections is demonstrated. The controversial behavior of the polarized strange quark density obtained from the fi…
The first moments of the polarized valence parton distribution functions (PDFs) truncated to the wide Bjorken $x$ region $0.004<x<0.7$ are directly (without any fitting procedure) extracted in the next to leading order (NLO) QCD from both COMPASS and HERMES data on pion production in polarized semi-inclusive DIS (SIDIS) experiments. The COMPASS and HERMES data are combined in two ways and two scenarios for the fragmentation functions (FFs) are considered. Two procedures are proposed for an estimation of light sea quark contributions to the proton spin. Both of them lead to the conclusion that …
We consider the Sivers, Collins and transversity functions as extracted from SIDIS and e+e- experimental data and investigate to what extent they might explain the large Single Spin Asymmetries (SSA) observed in proton-proton inclusive processes. This phenomenological study is performed within the TMD factorization scheme. As the SIDIS data cover only a limited range of x values (x < 0.3), we allow for different large $x$ behaviours of the SIDIS Sivers functions and transversity distributions. We conclude that, within the available experimental constraints, one cannot observe any clear univers…
We present results on the quark and gluon polarization in the nucleon obtained in a combined next to leading order analysis to the available inclusive and semi-inclusive polarized deep inelastic scattering data.
Predictions are made for azimuthal asymmetries in pion and kaon production from SIDIS off a longitudinally polarized deuterium target for HERMES kinematics, based on information on the 'Collins fragmentation function' from DELPHI data and on predictions for the transversity distribution function from non-perturbative calculations in the chiral quark-soliton model. There are no free parameters in the approach, which has been already successfully applied to explain the azimuthal asymmetries from SIDIS off polarized proton targets observed by HERMES and SMC.
The transversity distribution for $u$ and $d$ quarks is usually extracted from data on spin asymmetries in Semi Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS): however, due to its chiral odd nature, it has to be coupled to another chiral odd function, typically the Collins or the di-hadron fragmentation function. A recent suggestion of considering SIDIS data involving ratios of spin asymmetries and avoiding a knowledge of the Collins function, is briefly discussed. New measurements, involving ratios of cross sections, are suggested. They would allow a direct extraction of the transversity ratio, …
We study the Sivers effect in transverse single spin asymmetries (SSA) for pion and kaon production in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) processes. We perform a fit of A^{sin(phi_h-phi_S)}_UT taking into account the recent data from HERMES and COMPASS Collaborations, which allow a new determination of the Sivers distribution functions for quark and anti-quark with u, d and also s flavours. Estimates for forthcoming SIDIS experiments at COMPASS and JLab are given.
We show how some parton distribution functions related to the transverse spin of nucleons can be extracted point by point from combinations of proton and deuteron observables. In particular, we present a determination of the valence and sea Sivers functions from the single-spin asymmetries measured by COMPASS.
We present [1] the first simultaneous extraction of the transversity distribution and the Collins fragmentation function, obtained through a combined analysis of experimental data on azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS), from the HERMES and COMPASS Collaborations, and in e+ e- --> h1 h2 X processes, from the Belle Collaboration.
We review the present understanding of the nucleon transversity distribution and Collins fragmentation function, based on Ref.\cite{Efremov:2006qm}, and discuss how Drell-Yan experiments will improve it.
The measurement of transverse single-spin asymmetries for baryon production in the target fragmentation region of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS), can produce important insight into those nonperturbative aspects of QCD directly associated with confinement and with the dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry. We discuss here, interns of spin-directed momentum transfers, the powerful quantum field-theoretical constraints on the spin-orbit dynamics underlying these transverse spin observables. The spin-directed momentum shifts, originating either in the target nucleon or in the QCD…
The recent data on the transverse single spin asymmetry $A_{UT}^{\sin(ϕ_h+ϕ_S)}$ from HERMES and COMPASS Collaborations are analysed within LO parton model with unintegrated parton distribution and fragmentation functions. A fit of SIDIS data from HERMES Collaboration is performed leading to the extraction of favoured and unfavoured Collins fragmentation functions. A very good description of COMPASS data is obtained. BELLE $e^+e^-$ data are shown to be compatible with our estimates based on the extracted Collins fragmentation functions. Predictions for $A_{UT}^{\sin(ϕ_h+ϕ_S)}$ asymmetries at J…
We present an update of a previous global analysis of the experimental data on azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS), from the HERMES and COMPASS Collaborations, and in e+ e- -> h1 h2 X processes, from the Belle Collaboration. Compared to the first extraction, a more precise determination of the Collins fragmentation function and the transversity distribution function for u and d quarks is obtained.

A global analysis of the experimental data on azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS), from the HERMES and COMPASS Collaborations, and in e+e- --> h1 h2 X processes, from the BELLE Collaboration, is performed. It results in the extraction of the Collins fragmentation function and, for the first time, of the transversity distribution function for u and d quarks. These turn out to have opposite signs and to be sizably smaller than their positivity bounds. Predictions for the azimuthal asymmetry A_{UT}^{sin(phi_h + phi_S)}, as will soon be measured at JLab and CO…
We present a phenomenological analysis of the $\cos 2 ϕ$ asymmetry recently measured by the COMPASS and HERMES collaborations in unpolarized semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. In the kinematical regimes explored by these experiments the asymmetry arises from transverse-spin and intrinsic transverse-momentum effects. We consider the leading-twist contribution, related to the so-called Boer-Mulders transverse-polarization distribution $h_1^{\perp}(x, k_T^2)$, and the twist-4 Cahn contribution, involving unpolarized transverse-momentum distribution functions. We show that a reasonably good…
The polarized structure functions of $^3He$ and $^3H$ nuclei are calculated in NLO approximation, considering and disregarding the light sea quark symmetry breaking. We employ the polarized structure function of the nucleons within the nucleus extracted from our two recent analysis on polarized DIS data and on polarized DIS+SIDIS data. Since the data of the second analysis cover a bigger range of Bjorken variable, both SU(2) and SU(3) symmetry breaking is considered within the analysis. Then we calculate and compare the polarized structures of nuclei extracted from both scenarios. Also the Bjo…
We derive the complete twist-3 single-spin-dependent cross section for semi-inclusive DIS, $ep^\uparrow\to eπX$, associated with the complete set of the twist-3 quark-gluon correlation functions in the transversely polarized nucleon, extending our previous study. The cross section consists of five independent structure functions with different azimuthal dependences, consistently with the transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) factorization approach in the low $q_T$ region. Correspondence with the inclusive DIS limit and comparison with the TMD approach are briefly discussed.
We investigate the transverse target spin asymmetry $A^{\sinϕ_{S}}_{UT}$ for the unpolarized $Λ$ production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering with the transverse momentum of the final-state lambda hyperon being integrated out. The asymmetry is contributed by the product of the transversity distribution function $h_1(x)$ of the nucleon and the collinear twist-3 fragmentation function $\tilde{H}(z)$ of the $Λ$ hyperon. The later one originates from the quark-gluon-quark correlation and is a naive time-reversal-odd function. We calculate $\tilde{H}$ of the $Λ$ hyperon by adopt a diquark…
Approximate relations among transverse momentum dependent quark distribution functions are established in the framework of the QCD parton model. The validity of such results survives QCD evolution effects, owing to the Politzer theorem on equations of motion. Furthermore the model fixes an energy scale, involved in the parametrization of the correlator, which determines the Q^2 dependence of the azimuthal asymmetry in inclusive reactions. Some of the present data - the cos2ϕsymmetry in unpolarized Drell-Yan, the sin2ϕsingle spin asymmetry in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and…
We consider the azimuthal distribution of the final observed hadron in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and the lepton pair in the Drell-Yan process. In particular, we focus on the $\cos ϕ$ modulation of the unpolarized cross section and on its dependence upon transverse momentum. At low transverse momentum, for these observables we propose a factorized expression based on tree-level approach and conjecture that the same formula is valid in transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) factorization when written in terms of subtracted TMD parton distributions. Our formula correctly matches with …
In the target fragmentation region of Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering, the diffractively produced hadron has small transverse momentum. If it is at order of $Λ_{QCD}$, it prevents to make predictions with the standard collinear factorization. However, in this case, differential cross-sections can be predicted by the factorization with fracture functions, diffractive parton distributions. If the transverse momentum is much larger than $Λ_{QCD}$ but much smaller than $Q$ which is the virtuality of the virtual photon, both factorizations apply. In this case, fracture functions can be fac…
A major experimental program is presently underway to determine the Sivers, Boer-Mulders and transversity distributions, vital for understanding the internal structure of the nucleon. To this end we consider the Sivers, Boer-Mulders and transversity azimuthal asymmetries of the difference cross sections of hadrons with opposite charges in SIDIS reactions with unpolarized and transversely polarized target l+N\to l'+h+X, h=π^\pm, K^\pm, h^\pm. We show that on deuteron target these asymmetries are particularly simple and determine the sum of the valence-quark Q_V=u_V+d_V transverse momentum depen…
The most recent data on the weighted transverse single spin asymmetry A_{UT}^{\sin(ϕ_h-ϕ_S)} from HERMES and COMPASS collaborations are analysed within LO parton model; all transverse motions are taken into account. Extraction of the Sivers function for u and d quarks is performed. Based on the extracted Sivers functions, predictions for A_{UT}^{\sin(ϕ_h-ϕ_S)} asymmetries at JLab are given; suggestions for further measurements at COMPASS, with a transversely polarized hydrogen target and selecting favourable kinematical ranges, are discussed. Predictions are also presented for Single Spin Asym…
The JLab 12 GeV upgrade with a proposed solenoid detector and the CLAS12 detector can provide the granularity and three-dimensional kinematic coverage in longitudinal and transverse momentum, $0.1\le x \le 0.5$, $0.3 \le z \le 0.7$ with $P_T \le 1.5 {\rm GeV}$ to precisely measure the leading twist chiral-odd and $T$-odd quark distribution and fragmentation functions in SIDIS. The large $x$ experimental reach of these detectors with a 12 GeV CEBAF at JLab makes it {\em ideal} to obtain precise data on the {\em valence-dominated} transversity distribution function and to access the tensor charg…
In this note we consider effects of a Two-Photon Exchange (TPE) in inclusive DIS and semi-inclusive DIS (SIDIS). In particular, transverse single spin asymmetries are generated in inclusive DIS if more than one photon is exchanged between the lepton and the hadron. We briefly summarize the TPE in DIS in the parton model and extend our approach to SIDIS, where a new leading twist $\sin(2ϕ)$ contribution to the longitudinal beam spin asymmetry shows up. Possible TPE effects for the Sivers and the Collins asymmetries in SIDIS are power-suppressed.
A major experimental program is presently underway worldwide to determine the fundamental non-perturbative functions, the Sivers, Boer-Mulders and transversity distributions, which are vital for an understanding of the internal structure of the nucleon. However, at present, many simplifying assumptions are used in extracting these functions from the data. We demonstrate that if the binning of the data in Q^2 is small enough so that Q^2-evolution can be neglected inside a bin, then one can obtain stringent tests of these assumptions. Failure to satisfy these tests implies that the presently ext…
The most recent data on the weighted transverse single spin asymmetry $A_{UT}^{\sin(ϕ_h-ϕ_S)}$ from HERMES and COMPASS collaborations are analysed within LO parton model with unintegrated parton distribution and fragmentation functions; all transverse motions are taken into account, with exact kinematics, in the elementary interactions. The overall quality of the data is such that, for the first time, a rather well constrained extraction of the Sivers function for $u$ and $d$ quarks is possible and is performed. Comparisons with models are made. Based on the extracted Sivers functions, predict…
We advance the threshold resummation formalism for semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^{3}$LL) order, including the three-loop hard factor. We expand the results in the strong coupling to obtain approximate next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^{3}$LO) corrections for the SIDIS cross section. In Mellin moment space, these corrections include all terms that are logarithmically enhanced at threshold, or that are constant. We also consider a set of corrections that are suppressed near threshold. Our numerical estimates show modes…
We consider the transverse momentum spectrum and the $\cos 2ϕ$ azimuthal distribution of $J/ψ$ mesons produced in semi-inclusive, deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering, where the electron and the proton are unpolarized. At low transverse momentum, we propose factorized expressions in terms of transverse momentum dependent gluon distributions and shape functions. We show that our formulae, at the order $α_s,$ correctly match with the collinear factorization results at high transverse momentum. The latter are computed at the order $α_s^2$ in the framework of nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD), with…
We present an extraction of the Sivers distribution functions from the most recent experimental data of the HERMES and COMPASS experiments, assuming a negligible contribution of sea quark Sivers functions.
The role of hadronization mechanism in polarization phenomena in semi inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and a purity method for extraction of polarized distribution functions are discussed. According to the Monte Carlo (MC) event generator, on which this method is based, hadrons can be produced via quark (diquark) fragmentation or light cluster decays. In contrast, the purity method assumes that only quark fragmentation gives contribution to hadron production in the current fragmentation region. The ignorance of contributions from diquark fragmentation and cluster decays to asymmetry…
We investigate the $\sin (ϕ_Λ-ϕ_S)$ single-spin asymmetry in the transversely polarized $Λ$ production in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering process within the framework of the transverse momentum dependent~(TMD) factorization. The asymmetry is contributed by the convolution of the polarizing TMD fragmentation function $D_{1T}^\perp$ of the $Λ$ hyperon and the unpolarized TMD distribution function $f_1$ of the target nucleon. We apply two sets of $D_{1T}^{\perp,Λ^\uparrow/q}$, the spectator diquark model result and available parametrization, to numerically estimate the $\sin (ϕ_Λ-ϕ_S)$…
We analyze the Sivers asymmetry in both Drell-Yan (DY) production and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS), while considering properly defined transverse momentum dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions and their QCD evolution. After finding a universal non-perturbative spin-independent Sudakov factor that can describe reasonably well the world's data of SIDIS, DY lepton pair and $W/Z$ production in unpolarized scatterings, we perform a global fitting of all the experimental data on the Sivers asymmetry in SIDIS from HERMES, COMPASS and Jefferson Lab. Then we make…
Semi-inclusive deep inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) has been a very successful tool to investigate the partonic structure of the nucleon over the last decade. Compared to inclusive DIS, information about the quantum numbers of the struck quark can be inferred from the identity, distribution and polarization of the final state hadrons. Up to now, virtually all knowledge about the quark-gluon structure of the nucleon from SIDIS has been gained from distributions of independently observed scalar hadrons. However, given the amount of data current and future experiments at JLab, RHIC, KEK and the EIC …
In this review a first comprehensive study of azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic muoproduction of hadron pairs off longitudinally polarized protons at COMPASS is presented. The study is based on data taken in 2007 and 2011, obtained by impinging a high-energetic $μ^+$ beam of $160$ GeV/$\it{c}$, respectively $200$ GeV/$\it{c}$, momentum on a solid ammonia target. The discussion is focused on both leading and subleading longitudinal target-spin-dependent asymmetries arising in the di-hadron SIDIS cross section, addressing the role of spin-orbit couplings and quark-gluon corr…
Unpolarised semi-inclusive DIS is receiving a growing interest as a powerful tool to access poorly known universal functions that play a key role in many processes, in particular in the study of the spin structure of the nucleon. These functions can be investigated through experimental observables such as hadron multiplicities in the collinear and transverse framework, the dihadron multiplicities, the azimuthal asymmetries and some others. New results on these observables by the COMPASS experiment at CERN will be shown and discussed.
Quark spin effects in hadronization have been recently included in the PYTHIA 8 event generator for the simulation of the deep inelastic scattering (DIS) process off a polarized nucleon target via the external StringSpinner package. The spin effects can be simulated for the production of pseudoscalar mesons using the string+${}^3P_0$ model of polarized quark fragmentation and parametrizations of the transversity PDFs. We present here a major development of StringSpinner which includes the production of vector mesons in the polarized PYTHIA 8 string fragmentation as well as their polarized deca…
The unpolarised transverse momentum dependent distribution and fragmentation functions are extracted from HERMES and COMPASS experimental measurements of SIDIS multiplicities for charged hadron production. The data are grouped into independent bins of the kinematical variables, in which the TMD factorisation is expected to hold. A simple factorised functional form of the TMDs is adopted, with a Gaussian dependence on the intrinsic transverse momentum, which turns out to be quite adequate in shape. HERMES data do not need any normalisation correction, while fits of the COMPASS data much improve…
In recent years information on the transversity distribution $h_1$ has been obtained combining the Collins asymmetry results from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) data on transversely polarized nucleon targets with the information on the fragmentation function of a transversely polarized quark from the asymmetries measured in $e^+e^-$ annihilation into hadrons. An alternative method was proposed long time ago, which does not require the $e^+e^-$ data, but allows one to get ratios of the $u$ and $d$ quark transversity distributions from the SIDIS data alone. The method utilizes …
