Off-axis electron holography was used to observe and quantify the magnetic microstructure of a perpendicular magnetic anisotropic (PMA) recording media. Thin foils of PMA materials exhibit an interesting up and down domain configuration. These domains are found to be very stable and were observed at the same time with their stray field, closing magnetic flux in the vacuum. The magnetic moment can thus be determined locally in a volume as small as few tens of cubic nanometers.
Micromagnetic modelling provides the ability to simulate large magnetic systems accurately without the computational cost limitation imposed by atomistic modelling. Through micromagnetic modelling it is possible to simulate systems consisting of thousands of grains over a time range of nanoseconds to years, depending upon the solver used. Here we present the creation and release of an open-source multi-timescale micromagnetic code combining three key solvers: Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert; Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch; Kinetic Monte Carlo. This code, called MARS (Models of Advanced Recording Systems), is c…
A systematic investigation has been performed to optimize the microstructure of $\mathrm{L1_0-FePt-SiO_x}$ granular thin film as recording media for heat-assisted magnetic recording. The FePt-BN nucleation layer, which is stable even at $700^\circ \text{C}$, is used to control the grain sizes and microstructure during high-temperature processing. The study finds that films of high-aspect-ratio FePt grains with well-formed silicon oxide (SiOx) grain boundaries require the grading of the deposition temperature during film growth as well as the grading of the silicon oxide concentration. Well-iso…
The development of high-density magnetic recording media is limited by the superparamagnetism in very small ferromagnetic crystals. Hard magnetic materials with strong perpendicular anisotropy offer stability and high recording density. To overcome the difficulty of writing media with a large coercivity, heat assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) has been developed, rapidly heating the media to the Curie temperature Tc before writing, followed by rapid cooling. Requirements are a suitable Tc, coupled with anisotropic thermal conductivity and hard magnetic properties. Here we introduce Rh2CoSb as …
Magnetic-Field-Dependent Raman Scattering in Multiferroic Bilayer Films: Evidence for Stress-Mediated Magnetoelectric Coupling
首次报道了Pb(Zr,Ti)O_3-CoFe_2 O_4双层多铁体系的磁场相关拉曼散射研究。

Strain engineering provides the ability to control the ground states and associated phase transition in the epitaxial films. However, the systematic study of intrinsic characters and their strain dependency in transition-metal nitrides remains challenging due to the difficulty in fabricating the stoichiometric and high-quality films. Here we report the observation of electronic state transition in highly crystalline antiferromagnetic CrN films with strain and reduced dimensionality. Shrinking the film thickness to a critical value of ~ 30 unit cells, a profound conductivity reduction accompani…

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is considered a key reaction for electrochemical energy conversion but slow kinetics hamper application in electrolyzers, metal-air batteries and other applications that rely on sustainable protons from water oxidation. In this review, the prospect of epitaxial perovskite oxides for the OER at room temperature in alkaline media is reviewed with respect to fundamental insight into systematic trends of the activity. First, we thoroughly define the perovskite structure and its parameter space. Then, the synthesis methods used to make electrocatalytic epitaxial …

We present an analytical model for calculating energy barrier for the magnetic field-driven domain wall-mediated magnetization reversal of a magneto-resistive random access memory (MRAM) cell and apply it to study thermal stability factor $Δ$ for various thicknesses of W layers inserted into the free layer (FL) as a function of the cell size and temperature. We find that, by increasing W thickness, the effective perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) energy density of the FL film monotonically increases, but at the same time, $Δ$ of the cell mainly decreases. Our analysis shows that, in addit…
The control of pure spin currents carried by magnons in magnetic insulator (MI) garnet films with a robust perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) is of great interest to spintronic technology as they can be used to carry, transport and process information. Garnet films with PMA present labyrinth domain magnetic structures that enrich the magnetization dynamics, and could be employed in more efficient wave-based logic and memory computing devices. In MI/NM bilayers, where NM being a normal metal providing a strong spin-orbit coupling, the PMA benefits the spin-orbit torque (SOT) driven magneti…
Improving the stability of electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) through materials design has received less attention than improving their catalytic activity. We explored the effect of Mn addition to a cobalt oxide for stabilizing the catalyst by comparing Na-containing CoOx and (Co0.7Mn0.3)Ox films electrodeposited in alkaline solution. The obtained disordered films were classified as layered oxides using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The CoOx films showed a constant decrease in the catalytic activity during cycling, confirmed by oxygen detection, while that of (Co0.…
