We investigate the collapse of differentially rotating supermassive stars (SMSs) by means of 3+1 hydrodynamic simulations in general relativity. We particularly focus on the onset of collapse to understand the final outcome of collapsing SMSs. We find that the estimated ratio of the mass between the black hole (BH) and the surrounding disk from the equilibrium star is roughly the same as the results from numerical simulation. This suggests that the picture of axisymmetric collapse is adequate, in the absence of nonaxisymmetric instabilities, to illustrate the final state of the collapse. We also find that quasi-periodic gravitational waves continue to be emitted after the quasinormal mode frequency has decayed. We furthermore have found that when the newly formed BH is almost extreme Kerr, the amplitude of the quasi-periodic oscillation is enhanced during the late stages of the evolution. Geometrical features, shock waves, and instabilities of the fluid are suggested as a cause of this amplification behaviour. This alternative scenario for the collapse of differentially rotating SMSs might be observable by LISA.
Thermal emission from a rotating, supermassive star will cause the configuration to contract slowly and spin up. If internal viscosity and magnetic fields are sufficiently weak, the contracting star will rotate differentially. For each of the six initial angular momentum distributions considered, a cooling supermassive star will likely encounter the dynamical bar mode instability, which may trigger the growth of nonaxisymmetric bars. This scenario will lead to the generation of long wavelength gravitational waves, which could be detectable by future space-based laser interferometers like LISA.
We investigate the gravitational collapse of rapidly rotating relativistic supermassive stars by means of a 3+1 hydrodynamical simulations in conformally flat spacetime of general relativity. We study the evolution of differentially rotating supermassive stars of $q \equiv J/M^{2} \sim 1$ ($J$ is the angular momentum and $M$ is the gravitational mass of the star) from the onset of radial instability at $R/M \sim 65$ ($R$ is the circumferential radius of the star) to the point where the conformally flat approximation breaks down. We find that the collapse of the star of $q \gtrsim 1$, a radiall…
For relativistic stars rotating slowly and differentially with a positive angular velocity, some properties in relation to the positiveness of the rate of rotational dragging and of the angular momentum density are derived. Also, a new proof for the bounds on the rotational mass-energy is given.
We present a three-parameter family of solutions to the stationary axisymmetric Einstein equations that describe differentially rotating disks of dust. They have been constructed by generalizing the Neugebauer-Meinel solution of the problem of a rigidly rotating disk of dust. The solutions correspond to disks with angular velocities depending monotonically on the radial coordinate; both decreasing and increasing behaviour is exhibited. In general, the solutions are related mathematically to Jacobi's inversion problem and can be expressed in terms of Riemann theta functions. A particularly inte…
The equations describing nonradial adiabatic oscillations of differentially rotating relativistic stars are derived in relativistic slow rotation approximation. The differentially rotating configuration is described by a perturbative version of the relativistic j-constant rotation law. Focusing on the oscillation properties of the stellar fluid, the adiabatic nonradial perturbations are studied in the Cowling approximation with a system of five partial differential equations. In these equations, differential rotation introduces new coupling terms between the perturbative quantites with respect…
It is usually believed that the Cowling approximation can give satisfactory solutions if the stars %are highly compressible have soft equations of state and/or if the strongly general relativistic stars are treated in the case of rigid rotation. Since, however, there have been no systematic studies about the accuracy of the Cowling approximation for differentially rotating compressible stars, we investigate eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions of the oscillation modes in {\it rapidly} and {\it differentially} rotating compressible stars by employing the exact method including full-perturbations…
We construct relativistic equilibrium models of differentially rotating neutron stars and show that they can support significantly more mass than their nonrotating or uniformly rotating counterparts. We dynamically evolve such ``hypermassive'' models in full general relativity and show that there do exist configurations which are dynamically stable against radial collapse and bar formation. Our results suggest that the remnant of binary neutron star coalescence may be temporarily stabilized by differential rotation, leading to delayed collapse and a delayed gravitational wave burst.
Non-axisymmetric oscillations of differentially rotating stars are studied using both slow rotation and Cowling approximation. The equilibrium stellar models are relativistic polytropes where differential rotation is described by the relativistic j-constant rotation law. The oscillation spectrum is studied versus three main parameters: the stellar compactness $M/R$, the degree of differential rotation $A$ and the number of maximun couplings $\ell_{\rm max}$. It is shown that the rotational splitting of the non-axisymmetric modes is strongly enhached by increasing the compactness of the star an…
We construct a new three-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics code, in which a fixed mesh refinement technique is implemented. To ensure the divergence-free condition as well as the magnetic flux conservation, we employ the method by Balsara (2001). Using this new code, we evolve differentially rotating magnetized neutron stars, and find that a magnetically driven outflow is launched from the star exhibiting a kink instability. The matter ejection rate and Poynting flux are still consistent with our previous finding (Shibata et al., 2011) obtained in axisymmetric simulations.
An understanding of the dynamics of differentially rotating systems is key to many areas of astrophysics. We investigate the oscillations of a simple system exhibiting differential rotation, and discuss issues concerning the role of corotation points and the emergence of dynamical instabilities. This problem is of particular relevance to the emission of gravitational waves from oscillating neutron stars, which are expected to possess significant differential rotation immediately after birth or binary merger.
We study the dynamical instability against bar-mode deformation of differentially rotating stars. We performed numerical simulation and linear perturbation analysis adopting polytropic equations of state with the polytropic index $n=1$. It is found that rotating stars of a high degree of differential rotation are dynamically unstable even for the ratio of the kinetic energy to the gravitational potential energy of $O(0.01)$. Gravitational waves from the final nonaxisymmetric quasistationary states are calculated in the quadrupole formula. For rotating stars of mass $1.4M_{\odot}$ and radius se…
We show that, at first order in the angular velocity, the general relativistic description of Rossby-Haurwitz waves (the analogues of r-waves on a thin shell) can be obtained from the corresponding Newtonian one after a coordinate transformation. As an application, we show that the results recently obtained by Rezzolla and Yoshida (2001) in the analysis of Newtonian Rossby-Haurwitz waves of a slowly and differentially rotating, fluid shell apply also in General Relativity, at first order in the angular velocity.
A self-consistent field method is developed, which can be used to construct models of differentially rotating stars to first post-Newtonian order. The rotation law is specified by the specific angular momentum distribution j(m), where m is the baryonic mass fraction inside the surface of constant specific angular momentum. The method is then used to compute models of the nascent neutron stars resulting from the accretion induced collapse of white dwarfs. The result shows that the ratios of kinetic energy to gravitational binding energy of the relativistic models are slightly smaller than the c…
For the analysis of the r-mode oscillation of hot young neutron stars, it is necessary to consider the effect of it differential rotation, because viscosity is not strong enough for differentially rotating young neutron stars to be lead to uniformly rotating configurations on a very short time scale after their birth. In this paper, we have developed a numerical scheme to solve r-mode oscillations of differentially rotating polytropic inviscid stars. This is the extended version of the method which was applied to compute r-mode oscillations of uniformly rotating Newtonian polytropic stars. By …
In this paper, solutions to the Ernst equation are investigated that depend on two real analytic functions defined on the interval [0,1]. These solutions are introduced by a suitable limiting process of Backlund transformations applied to seed solutions of the Weyl class. It turns out that this class of solutions contains the general relativistic gravitational field of an arbitrary differentially rotating disk of dust, for which a continuous transition to some Newtonian disk exists. It will be shown how for given boundary conditions (i. e. proper surface mass density or angular velocity of the…
We analyze the impact of the choice rotation law on equilibrium sequences of relativistic differentially-rotating neutron stars in axisymmetry. The maximum allowed mass for each model is strongly affected by the distribution of angular velocity along the radial direction and by the consequent degree of differential rotation. In order to study the wide parameter space implied by the choice of rotation law, we introduce a functional form that generalizes the so called "j-const. law" adopted in all previous work. Using this new rotation law we reproduce the angular velocity profile of differentia…
The stability properties of rotating relativistic stars against prompt gravitational collapse to a black hole are rather well understood for uniformly rotating models. This is not the case for differentially rotating neutron stars, which are expected to be produced in catastrophic events such as the merger of binary system of neutron stars or the collapse of a massive stellar core. We consider sequences of differentially rotating equilibrium models using the $j$-constant law and by combining them with their dynamical evolution, we show that a sufficient stability criterion for differentially r…
The opportunity to study physics at supra-nuclear densities through X-ray observations of neutron stars has led to in-depth investigations of certain approximately universal relations that can remove degeneracies in pulse profile models. One such set of relations determines all of the multipole moments of a neutron star just from the first three (the mass monopole, the current dipole and the mass quadrupole moment) approximately independently of the equation of state. These three-hair relations were found to hold in neutron stars that rotate rigidly, as is the case in old pulsars, but neutron …
Recent numerical simulations indicate the presence of dynamical instabilities of the f-mode in differentially rotating stars even at very low values of $T/|W|$, the ratio of kinetic to potential energy. In this Letter we argue that these may be shear instabilities which occur when the degree of differential rotation exceeds a critical value and the f-mode develops a corotation point associated with the presence of a continuous spectrum. Our explanation, which is supported by detailed studies of a simple shell model, offers a straightforward way of understanding all of the key features of these…
Recent studies have raised doubts about the occurrence of r modes in Newtonian stars with a large degree of differential rotation. To assess the validity of this conjecture we have solved the eigenvalue problem for Rossby-Haurwitz waves (the analogues of r waves on a thin-shell) in the presence of differential rotation. The results obtained indicate that the eigenvalue problem is never singular and that, at least for the case of a thin-shell, the analogues of r modes can be found for arbitrarily large degrees of differential rotation. This work clarifies the puzzling results obtained in calcul…
We investigate the nonlinear behaviour of the dynamically unstable rotating star for the bar mode by three-dimensional hydrodynamics in Newtonian gravity. We find that an oscillation along the rotation axis is induced throughout the growth of the unstable bar mode, and that its characteristic frequency is twice as that of the bar mode, which oscillates mainly along the equatorial plane. A possibility to observe Faraday resonance in gravitational waves is demonstrated and discussed.
Rapidly and differentially rotating compact stars are believed to be formed in binary neutron star merger events, according to both numerical simulations and the multi-messenger observation of GW170817. The lifetime and evolution of such a differentially rotating star, is tightly related to the observations in the post-merger phase. Various studies on the maximum mass of differentially rotating neutron stars have been done in the past, most of which assume the so-called $j$-const law as the rotation profile inside the star and consider only neutron star equations of state. In this paper, we ex…
We have studied the $f$-mode oscillations of differentially rotating polytropes by making use of the linear stability analysis. We found that the critical values of $T/|W|$ where the dynamical instability against the $m = 2$ $f$-mode oscillations sets in decrease down to $T/|W| \sim 0.20$ as the degree of differential rotation becomes higher. Here $m$ is an azimuthal mode number and $T$ and $W$ are the rotational energy and the gravitational potential energy, respectively. This tendency is almost independent of the compressibility of the polytropes. These are the {\it first exact results} of t…
We study the effects of magnetic fields on the evolution of differentially rotating neutron stars, which can form in stellar core collapse or binary neutron star coalescence. Magnetic braking and the magnetorotational instability (MRI) both redistribute angular momentum; the outcome of the evolution depends on the star's mass and spin. Simulations are carried out in axisymmetry using our recently developed codes which integrate the coupled Einstein-Maxwell-MHD equations. For initial data, we consider three categories of differentially rotating, equilibrium configurations, which we label normal…
A binary neutron star merger produces a rapidly and differentially rotating compact remnant whose lifespan heavily affects the electromagnetic and gravitational emissions. Its stability depends on both the equation of state (EOS) and the rotation law and it is usually investigated through numerical simulations. Nevertheless, by means of a sufficient criterion for secular instability, equilibrium sequences can be used as a computationally inexpensive way to estimate the onset of dynamical instability, which, in general, is close to the secular one. This method works well for uniform rotation an…
We follow the collapse in axisymmetry of a uniformly rotating, supermassive star (SMS) to a supermassive black hole (SMBH) in full general relativity. The initial SMS of arbitrary mass $M$ is marginally unstable to radial collapse and rotates at the mass-shedding limit. The collapse proceeds homologously early on and results in the appearance of an apparent horizon at the center. Although our integration terminates before final equilibrium is achieved, we determine that the final black hole will contain about 90% of the total mass of the system and have a spin parameter $J/M^2 \sim 0.75$. The …
We present the first numerical models of differentially rotating stars in alternative theories of gravity. We chose a particular class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity that is indistinguishable from GR in the weak field regime but can lead to significant deviations when strong fields are considered. We show that the maximum mass that a differentially rotating neutron star can sustain increases significantly for scalarized solutions and such stars can reach larger angular momenta. In addition, the presence of a nontrivial scalar field has the effect of increasing the required axis ratio for…
We investigate the nature of low T/W dynamical instabilities in various ranges of the stiffness of the equation of state in differentially rotating stars. Here T is the rotational kinetic energy, while W the gravitational binding energy. We analyze these instabilities in both a linear perturbation analysis and a three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulation. An unstable normal mode of a differentially rotating star is detected by solving an eigenvalue problem along the equatorial plane of the star. The physical mechanism of low T/W dynamical instabilities is also qualitatively confirmed by a sca…
We investigate the nature of low T/W dynamical instabilities in differentially rotating stars by means of linear perturbation. Here, T and W represent rotational kinetic energy and the gravitational binding energy of the star. This is the first attempt to investigate low T/W dynamical instabilities as a complete set of the eigenvalue problem. Our equilibrium configuration has "constant" specific angular momentum distribution, which potentially contains a singular solution in the perturbed enthalpy at corotation radius in linear perturbation. We find the unstable normal modes of differentially …
We investigate the dynamical stability of relativistic, differentially rotating, quasi-toroidal models of neutron stars through hydrodynamical simulations in full general relativity. We find that all quasi-toroidal configurations studied in this work are dynamically unstable against the growth of non-axisymmetric modes. Both one-arm and bar mode instabilities grow during their evolution. We find that very high rest mass configurations collapse to form black holes. Our calculations suggest that configurations whose rest mass is less than the binary neutron star threshold mass for prompt collaps…

We investigate the dynamical one-armed spiral instability in differentially rotating stars with both eigenmode analysis and hydrodynamic simulations in Newtonian gravity. We find that the one-armed spiral mode is generated around the corotation radius of the star, and the distribution of angular momentum shifts inwards the corotation radius during the growth of one-armed spiral mode. We also find by investigating the distribution of the canonical angular momentum density that the low T/|W| dynamical instability for both m=1 and m=2 mode, where T is the rotational kinetic energy and W is the gr…
We have computed the eigenfrequencies of f-modes for a constant-rest-mass sequences of rapidly rotating relativistic inviscid stars in differential rotation. The frequencies have been calculated neglecting the metric perturbations (the relativistic Cowling approximation) and expressed as a function of the ratio between the rotational kinetic energy and the absolute value of the gravitational energy of the stellar model beta=T/|W|. The zeros and the end-points of these sequences mark respectively the onset of the secular instability driven by gravitational radiation-reaction and the maximum val…
We prove general nonlinear stability and existence theorems for rotating star solutions which are axi-symmetric steady-state solutions of the compressible isentropic Euler-Poisson equations in 3 spatial dimensions. We apply our results to rotating and non-rotating white dwarf, and rotating high density supermassive (extreme relativistic) stars, stars which are in convective equilibrium and have uniform chemical composition. This paper is a continuation of our earlier work ([28]).
An understanding of the oscillations of differentially rotating systems is key to many areas of astrophysics. It is of particular relevance to the emission of gravitational waves from oscillating neutron stars, which are expected to possess significant differential rotation immediately after birth or binary merger. In a previous paper we analysed the normal modes of a simple system exhibiting differential rotation. In this complementary paper we address the initial value problem for the same simple model using both analytical methods and numerical time evolutions. We derive a necessary and suf…
We present results of general relativistic simulations of collapsing supermassive stars with and without rotation using the two-dimensional general relativistic numerical code Nada, which solves the Einstein equations written in the BSSN formalism and the general relativistic hydrodynamics equations with high resolution shock capturing schemes. These numerical simulations use an equation of state which includes effects of gas pressure, and in a tabulated form those associated with radiation and the electron-positron pairs. We also take into account the effect of thermonuclear energy released b…
The discovery of quasars at increasingly large cosmological redshifts may favor "direct collapse" as the most promising evolutionary route to the formation of supermassive black holes. In this scenario, supermassive black holes form when their progenitors - supermassive stars - become unstable to gravitational collapse. For uniformly rotating stars supported by pure radiation pressure and spinning at the mass-shedding limit, the critical configuration at the onset of collapse is characterized by universal values of the dimensionless spin and radius parameters $J/M^2$ and $R/M$, independent of …
We study small-amplitude, nonlinear pulsations of uniformly and differentially rotating neutron stars employing a two-dimensional evolution code for general-relativistic hydrodynamics. Using Fourier transforms at several points inside the star, both the eigenfrequencies and two-dimensional eigenfunctions of pulsations are extracted. The centrifugal forces and the degree of differential rotation have significant effects on the mode-eigenfunction. We find that near the mass-shedding limit, the pulsations are damped due to shocks forming at the surface of the star. This new damping mechanism may …
We study the solution space of general relativistic, axisymmetric, equilibria of differentially rotating neutron stars with realistic, nuclear equations of state. We find that different types of stars, which were identified by earlier works for polytropic equations of state, arise for realistic equations of state, too. Scanning the solution space for the sample of realistic equations of state we treat, we find lower limits on the maximum rest masses supported by cold, differentially rotating stars for each type of stars. We often discover equilibrium configurations that can support more than 2…
To explain the accelerated expansion of our universe, many dark energy models and modified gravity theories have been proposed so far. It is argued in the literature that they are difficult to be distinguished on the cosmological scales. Therefore, it is well motivated to consider the relevant astrophysical phenomena on (or below) the galactic scales. In this work, we study the stability of self-gravitating differentially rotating galactic disks in $f(T)$ theory, and obtain the local stability criteria in $f(T)$ theory, which are valid for all $f(T)$ theories satisfying $f(T=0)=0$ and $f_T (T=…
We determine the accuracy of the conformal flatness (IWM-CFC) approximation for the case of single, but strongly differentially rotating relativistic stars. We find that for the fastest rotating and most relativistic polytropic models, the deviation from full general relativity is below 5% for integrated quantities and below 10% for local quantities, such as the angular velocity. Furthermore, we study the deviation of the IWM-CFC approximation from full general relativity by evaluating and comparing different error indicators. We find that for the models that are not near the maximum mass, a s…
A highly accurate, multi-domain spectral code is used in order to construct sequences of general relativistic, differentially rotating neutron stars in axisymmetry and stationarity. For bodies with a spheroidal topology and a homogeneous or an N=1 polytropic equation of state, we investigate the solution space corresponding to broad ranges of degree of differential rotation and stellar densities. In particular, starting from static and spherical configurations, we analyse the changes of the corresponding surface shapes as the rate of rotation is increased. For a sufficiently weak degree of dif…
We present new results on the dynamics and gravitational-wave emission from the collapse of differentially rotating neutron stars. We have considered a number of polytropic stellar models having different values of the dimensionless angular momentum J/M^2, where J and M are the asymptotic angular momentum and mass of the star, respectively. For neutron stars with J/M^2<1, i.e., "sub-Kerr" models, we were able to find models that are dynamically unstable and that collapse promptly to a rotating black hole. Both the dynamics of the collapse and the consequent emission of gravitational waves rese…
We obtain an approximate global stationary and axisymmetric solution of Einstein's equations which can be thought as a simple star model: a self-gravitating perfect fluid ball with a differential rotation motion pattern. Using the post--Minkowskian formalism (weak field approximation) and considering rotation as a perturbation (slow rotation approximation), we find approximate interior and exterior (asymptotically flat) solutions to this problem in harmonic coordinates. Interior and exterior solutions are matched, in the sense of Lichnerowicz, on the surface of zero pressure to get a global so…
We present long-term (~10^4 M) axisymmetric simulations of differentially rotating, magnetized neutron stars in the slow-rotation, weak magnetic field limit using a perturbative metric evolution technique. Although this approach yields results comparable to those obtained via nonperturbative (BSSN) evolution techniques, simulations performed with the perturbative metric solver require about 1/4 the computational resources at a given resolution. This computational efficiency enables us to observe and analyze the effects of magnetic braking and the magnetorotational instability (MRI) at very hig…
The capacity to model magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) flows in dynamical, strongly curved spacetimes significantly extends the reach of numerical relativity in addressing many problems at the forefront of theoretical astrophysics. We have developed and tested an evolution code for the coupled Einstein-Maxwell-MHD equations which combines a BSSN solver with a high resolution shock capturing scheme. As one application, we evolve magnetized, differentially rotating neutron stars under the influence of a small seed magnetic field. Of particular significance is the behavior found for hypermassive neutr…
We study the nature of non-axisymmetric dynamical instabilities in differentially rotating stars with both linear eigenmode analysis and hydrodynamic simulations in Newtonian gravity. We especially investigate the following three types of instability; the one-armed spiral instability, the low T/|W| bar instability, and the high T/|W| bar instability, where T is the rotational kinetic energy and W is the gravitational potential energy. The nature of the dynamical instabilities is clarified by using a canonical angular momentum as a diagnostic. We find that the one-armed spiral and the low T/|W|…
We investigate the dynamical instability of the one-armed spiral m=1 mode in differentially rotating stars by means of 3+1 hydrodynamical simulations in Newtonian gravitation. We find that both a soft equation of state and a high degree of differential rotation in the equilibrium star are necessary to excite a dynamical m=1 mode as the dominant instability at small values of the ratio of rotational kinetic to potential energy, T/|W|. We find that this spiral mode propagates outward from its point of origin near the maximum density at the center to the surface over several central orbital perio…
We present the first fully relativistic numerical calculations of differentially rotating Strange Quark Stars models for broad ranges of the maximum density and of the degree of differential rotation. Our simulations are performed with the very accurate and stable multi-domain spectral code FlatStar and use the MIT Bag model for describing strange quark matter. Our calculations based on a thorough exploration of the solution space show that the maximum mass of strange stars depends on both the degree of differential rotation and a type of solution, similarly to neutron stars described by a pol…
We study non-axisymmetric oscillations of rapidly and differentially rotating relativistic stars in the Cowling approximation. Our equilibrium models are sequences of relativistic polytropes, where the differential rotation is described by the relativistic $j$-constant law. We show that a small degree of differential rotation raises the critical rotation value for which the quadrupolar f-mode becomes prone to the CFS instability, while the critical value of $T/|W|$ at the mass-shedding limit is raised even more. For softer equations of state these effects are even more pronounced. When increas…
