We present the first simulation capable of resolving the structure of neutrino clustering on Mpc scales. The method combines grid- and particle-based methods and achieves very good accuracy on both small and large scales, while keeping CPU consumption under control. Such simulations are not only ideal for calculating the non-linear matter power spectrum but also particularly relevant for studies of how neutrinos cluster in galaxy- or cluster-sized halos. We perform the largest neutrino N-body simulation to date, effectively containing 10 different neutrino hot dark matter components with different thermal properties.
We revisit D-term inflation with the bounds of the cosmic string tension from gravitational wave observations and consider the possible deviation of the spectral index compared with the $Λ$CDM model in light of prerecombination resolutions of the Hubble tension. D-term inflation requires very small coupling constants under these constraints. We show that natural coupling constants ($g=λ=0.1$) can be achieved in the case of D-term inflation on the brane.
We present extragalactic number counts and a lower limit estimate for the cosmic infrared background at 15 um from AKARI ultra deep mapping of the gravitational lensing cluster Abell 2218. This data is the deepest taken by any facility at this wavelength, and uniquely samples the normal galaxy population. We have de-blended our sources, to resolve photometric confusion, and de-lensed our photometry to probe beyond AKARI's blank-field sensitivity. We estimate a de-blended 5 sigma sensitivity of 28.7 uJy. The resulting 15 um galaxy number counts are a factor of three fainter than previous result…
The Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST) has made one square degree, deep, confusion limited maps at three different bands, centered on the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey South field. By calculating the covariance of these maps with catalogs of 24 micron sources from the Far-Infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (FIDEL), we have determined that the total submillimeter intensities are 8.60 +/- 0.59, 4.93 +/- 0.34, and 2.27 +/- 0.20 nW m^2 sr^(-1) at 250, 350, and 500 micron, respectively. These numbers are more precise than previous estimates of the cosmic i…
We propose a hybrid quadratic estimator to measure cross correlations between gravitational lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and differential screening effects arising from fluctuations in the electron column density, such as could arise from patchy reionization. The hybrid quadratic estimators are validated by simulated data sets with both Planck and CMB-Stage 4 (CMB-S4) instrumental properties and found to be able to recover the cross-power spectra with almost no biases. We apply this technique to Planck 2015 temperature data and obtain cross-power spectra between gravitation…
We present the Millennium-II Simulation (MS-II), a very large N-body simulation of dark matter evolution in the concordance LCDM cosmology. The MS-II assumes the same cosmological parameters and uses the same particle number and output data structure as the original Millennium Simulation (MS), but was carried out in a periodic cube one-fifth the size (100 Mpc/h) with 5 times better spatial resolution (a Plummer equivalent softening of 1.0 kpc/h) and with 125 times better mass resolution (a particle mass of 6.9 \times 10^6 Msun/h). By comparing results at MS and MS-II resolution, we demonstrate…
We use the SCUBA-2 submillimeter camera mounted on the JCMT to obtain extremely deep number counts at 450 and 850um. We combine data on two cluster lensing fields, A1689 and A370, and three blank fields, CDF-N, CDF-S, and COSMOS, to measure the counts over a wide flux range at each wavelength. We use statistical fits to broken power law representations to determine the number counts. This allows us to probe to the deepest possible level in the data. At both wavelengths our results agree well with the literature in the flux range over which they have been measured, with the exception of the 850…
We use present cosmological data from the cosmic microwave background, large-scale structure and deuterium at high redshifts to constrain supersymmetric F- and D-term hybrid inflation scenarios including possible contributions to the CMB anisotropies from cosmic strings. Using two different realizations of the cosmic string spectrum, we find that the minimal version of the D-term model is ruled out at high significance. F-term models are also in tension with the data. We also discuss possible non-minimal variants of the models.
In this paper, we consider a simple form of expansion history of Universe referred to as the hybrid expansion law - a product of power-law and exponential type of functions. The ansatz by construction mimics the power-law and de Sitter cosmologies as special cases but also provides an elegant description of the transition from deceleration to cosmic acceleration. We point out the Brans-Dicke realization of the cosmic history under consideration. We construct potentials for quintessence, phantom and tachyon fields, which can give rise to the hybrid expansion law in general relativity. We invest…
We propose a decaying cold dark matter model to explain the excess of electron recoil observed at the XENON1T experiment. In this scenario, the daughter dark matter from the parent dark matter decay easily obtains velocity large enough to saturate the peak of the electron recoil energy around 2.5 keV, and the observed signal rate can be fulfilled by the parent dark matter with a mass of order 10-200 MeV and a lifetime larger than the age of Universe. We verify that this model is consistent with experimental limits from dark matter detections, Cosmic Microwave Background and Large Scale Structu…
The outskirts of galaxy clusters are characterised by the interplay of gas accretion and dynamical evolution involving turbulence, shocks, magnetic fields and diffuse radio emission. The density and velocity structure of the gas in the outskirts provide an effective pressure support and affect all processes listed above. Therefore it is important to resolve and properly model the turbulent flow in these mildly overdense and relatively large cluster regions; this is a challenging task for hydrodynamical codes. In this work, grid-based simulations of a galaxy cluster are presented. The simulatio…
Simulation of the cosmic clustering of massive neutrinos is a daunting task, due both to their large velocity dispersion and to their weak clustering power becoming swamped by Poisson shot noise. We present a new approach, the multi-fluid hybrid-neutrino simulation, which partitions the neutrino population into multiple flows, each of which is characterised by its initial momentum and treated as a separate fluid. These fluid flows respond initially linearly to nonlinear perturbations in the cold matter, but slowest flows are later converted to a particle realisation should their clustering pow…
The non-equivalence between the metric and Palatini formalisms of $f(R)$ gravity is an intriguing feature of these theories. However, in the recently proposed hybrid metric-Palatini gravity, consisting of the superposition of the metric Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian with an $f(\cal R)$ term constructed à la Palatini, the "true" gravitational field is described by the interpolation of these two non-equivalent approaches. The theory predicts the existence of a light long-range scalar field, which passes the local constraints and affects the galactic and cosmological dynamics. Thus, the theory open…
We present a successful realization of supersymmetric $μ$-hybrid inflation model based on a gauged $U(1)_{B-L}$ extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, with the soft supersymmetry breaking terms are playing an important role. Successful non-thermal leptogenesis with gravitino dark matter yields a reheat temperature in the range $2 \times 10^{7} \lesssim T_R \lesssim 5 \times 10^{9}$ GeV. This corresponds to the predictions $2 \times 10^{-18} \lesssim r\lesssim 4 \times 10^{-13}$ for the tensor to scalar ratio, and $-2 \times 10^{-6} \lesssim dn_s/d\ln k \lesssim -5 \times 10^{-…

Next-generation tests of fundamental physics and cosmology using large scale structure require measurements over large volumes of the Universe, including high redshifts inaccessible to present-day surveys. Line intensity mapping, an emerging technique that detects the integrated emission of atomic and molecular lines without resolving sources, can efficiently map cosmic structure over a wide range of redshifts. Observations at millimeter wavelengths detect far-IR emission lines such as CO/[CII], and take advantage of observational and analysis techniques developed by CMB experiments. These mea…
Massive gravity provides a natural solution for the dark energy problem of cosmology and is also a candidate for resolving the dark matter problem. I demonstrate that, assuming reasonable scaling relations, massive gravity can provide for Milgrom's law of gravity (or "modified Newtonian dynamics") which is known to remove the need for particle dark matter from galactic dynamics. Milgrom's law comes with a characteristic acceleration, Milgrom's constant, which is observationally constrained to $a_0\approx1.1\times10^{-10}$ m/s$^2$. In the derivation presented here, this constant arises naturall…
We briefly discuss constraints on supersymmetric hybrid inflation models and examine the consistency of brane inflation models. We then address the implications for inflationary scenarios resulting from the strong constraints on the cosmic (super)string tension imposed from the most recent cosmic microwave background temperature anisotropies data.
Recent low-redshift observations give value of the present-time Hubble parameter $H_{0}\simeq 74~\rm{km s}^{-1}\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$, roughly 10\% higher than the predicted value $H_{0}=67.4~\rm{km s}^{-1}\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$ from Planck's observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation~(CMB) and the $Λ$CDM model. Phenomenologically, we show that by adding an extra component X with negative density in the Friedmann equation, it can relieve the Hubble tension without changing the Planck's constraint on the matter and dark energy densities. For the extra negative density to be sufficiently small, i…
