Recently, dispersionless (coherent) motion of (noninteracting) massive Brownian particles, at intermediate time scales, was reported in a sinusoidal potential with a constant tilt. The coherent motion persists for a finite length of time before the motion becomes diffusive. We show that such coherent motion can be obtained repeatedly by applying an external zero-mean square-wave drive of appropriate period and amplitude, instead of a constant tilt. Thus, the cumulative duration of coherent motion of particles is prolonged. Moreover, by taking an appropriate combination of periods of the external field, one can postpone the beginning of the coherent motion and can even have coherent motion at a lower value of position dispersion than in the constant tilt case.
We reassess the "dispersionless transport regime" of Brownian particles in tilted periodic potentials. We show that the particles exhibit normal diffusive motion right after transitioning into the running state dragged by the constant bias force. No special transient dynamics appears, contrary to conjectures in the previous studies. The observed flat segment in the dispersion evolution curve is solely due to the broad spatial distribution of particles formed in the early superdiffusion stage. We quantitatively describe the whole evolution of the distribution function during superdiffusion and …
Cooperative jump motions are studied for mutually interacting particles in a one-dimensional periodic potential. The diffusion constant for the cooperative motion in systems including a small number of particles is numerically calculated and it is compared with theoretical estimates. We find that the size distribution of the cooperative jump motions obeys an exponential law in a large system.
We consider two coupled particles moving along a periodic substrate potential with negligible inertia effects (overdamped limit). Even when the particles are identical and the substrate spatially symmetric, a sinusoidal external driving of appropriate amplitude and frequency may lead to spontaneous symmetry breaking in the form of a permanent directed motion of the dimer. Thermal noise restores ergodicity and thus zero net velocity, but entails arbitrarily fast diffusion of the dimer for sufficiently weak noise. Moreover, upon application of a static bias force, the dimer exhibits a motion opp…
We consider the motion of an underdamped Brownian particle in a tilted periodic potential in a wide temperature range. Based on the previous data [1] and the new simulation results we show that the underdamped motion of particles in space-periodic potentials can be considered as the overdamped motion in the velocity space in the effective double-well potential. Simple analytic expressions for the particle mobility and diffusion coefficient have been derived with the use of the presented model. The results of analytical computations match well with numerical simulation data.
We present a theoretical treatment of overdamped Brownian motion on a multidimensional tilted periodic potential that is analogous to the tight-binding model of quantum mechanics. In our approach we expand the continuous Smoluchowski equation in the localized Wannier states of the periodic potential to derive a discrete master equation. This master equation can be interpreted in terms of hopping within and between Bloch bands and for weak tilting and long times we show that a single-band description is valid. In the limit of deep potential wells, we derive a simple functional dependence of the…
We study the motion of an active Brownian particle (ABP) using overdamped Langevin dynamics on a two-dimensional substrate with periodic array of obstacles and in a quasi-one-dimensional corrugated channel comprised of periodically arrayed obstacles. The periodic arrangement of the obstacles enhances the persistent motion of the ABP in comparison to its motion in the free space. Persistent motion increases with the activity of the ABP. We note that the periodic arrangement induces directionality in ABP motion at late time, and it increases with the size of the obstacles. We also note that the …
We calculate the probability distribution function (PDF) of an overdamped Brownian particle moving in a periodic potential energy landscape $U(x)$. The PDF is found by solving the corresponding Smoluchowski diffusion equation. We derive the solution for any periodic even function $U(x)$, and demonstrate that it is asymptotically (at large time $t$) correct up to terms decaying faster than $\sim t^{-3/2}$. As part of the derivation, we also recover the Lifson-Jackson formula for the effective diffusion coefficient of the dynamics. The derived solution exhibits agreement with Langevin dynamics s…
In this paper we revisit the problem of Brownian motion in a tilted periodic potential. We use homogenization theory to derive general formulas for the effective velocity and the effective diffusion tensor that are valid for arbitrary tilts. Furthermore, we obtain power series expansions for the velocity and the diffusion coefficient as functions of the external forcing. Thus, we provide systematic corrections to Einstein's formula and to linear response theory. Our theoretical results are supported by extensive numerical simulations. For our numerical experiments we use a novel spectral numer…
