We show that the difference of adiabatic phases, that are basis-dependent, in noncyclic evolution of non-degenerate quantum systems have to be taken into account to give the correct interference result in the calculation of physical quantities in states that are a superposition of instantaneous eigenstates of energy. To verify the contribution of those adiabatic phases in the interference phenomena, we consider the spin-1/2 model coupled to a precessing external magnetic field. In the model, the adiabatic phase increases in time up to reach the difference of the Berry's phases of the model when the external magnetic field completes a period.
We show that a noncyclic phase of geometric origin has to be included in the approximate adiabatic wave function. The adiabatic noncyclic geometric phase for systems exhibiting a conical intersection as well as for an Aharonov-Bohm situation is worked out in detail. A spin-1/2 experiment to measure the adiabatic noncyclic geometric phase is discussed. We also analyze some misconceptions in the literature and textbooks concerning noncyclic geometric phases.
The geometric phase acquired by the vector states under an adiabatic evolution along a noncyclic path can be calculated correctly in any instantaneous basis of a Hamiltonian that varies in time due to a time-dependent classical field.
We use the theory of dynamical invariants to yield a simple derivation of noncyclic analogues of the Abelian and non-Abelian geometric phases. This derivation relies only on the principle of gauge invariance and elucidates the existing definitions of the Abelian noncyclic geometric phase. We also discuss the adiabatic limit of the noncyclic geometric phase and compute the adiabatic non-Abelian noncyclic geometric phase for a spin 1 magnetic (or electric) quadrupole interacting with a precessing magnetic (electric) field.
We show that neutrino spin and spin-flavor transitions involve nonvanishing geometric phases. The geometric character of neutrino spin rotation is explored by studying the neutrino spin trajectory in the projective Hilbert space representation and its relation to the geometric phase. Analytical expressions are derived for noncyclic geometric phases. Several calculations are performed for different cases of rotating and nonrotating magnetic fields in the context of solar neutrinos and neutrinos produced inside neutron stars. Also the effects of adiabaticity, critical magnetic fields and cross b…
In [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 080502 (2005)], Zheng proposed a scheme for implementing a conditional phase shift via adiabatic passages. The author claims that the gate is "neither of dynamical nor geometric origin" on the grounds that the Hamiltonian does not follow a cyclic change. He further argues that "in comparison with the adiabatic geometric gates, the nontrivial cyclic loop is unnecessary, and thus the errors in obtaining the required solid angle are avoided, which makes this new kind of phase gates superior to the geometric gates." In this Comment, we point out that geometric operations, …
In this paperwe propose two theoretical schemes for implementation of quantum phase gates by engineering the phase-sensitive dark state of two atoms subjected to Rydberg-Rydberg interaction. Combining the conventional adiabatic techniques and currently developed approaches of phase control, a feasible proposal for implementation of a geometric phase gate is presented, where the conditional phase shift (Berry phase) is achieved by adiabatically and cyclically changing the parameters of the driving fields. Here we find that the geometric phase acquired is related to the way how the relative phas…
If a quantum system evolves in a noncyclic fashion the corresponding geometric phase or holonomy may not be fully defined. Off-diagonal geometric phases have been developed to deal with such cases. Here, we generalize these phases to the non-Abelian case, by introducing off-diagonal holonomies that involve evolution of more than one subspace of the underlying Hilbert space. Physical realizations of the off-diagonal holonomies in adiabatic evolution and interferometry are put forward.
We introduce an alternative way to derive the generalized form of the master equation recently presented by J. P. Pekola et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 030401 (2010)] for an adiabatically steered two-level quantum system interacting with a Markovian environment. The original derivation employed the effective Hamiltonian in the adiabatic basis with the standard interaction picture approach but without the usual secular approximation. Our approach is based on utilizing a master equation for a non-steered system in the first super-adiabatic basis. It is potentially efficient in obtaining higher-or…
We study quantum adiabatic dynamics, where the slowly moving field is influenced by system's state (feedback). The information for the feedback is gained from non-disturbating measurements done on an ensemble of identical non-interacting systems. The situation without feedback is governed by the adiabatic theorem: adiabatic energy level populations stay constant, while the adiabatic eigenvectors get a specific phase contribution (Berry phase). However, under feedback the adiabatic theorem does not hold: the adiabatic populations satisfy a closed equation of motion that coincides with the repli…
We study the Landau-Zener Problem for a decaying two-level-system described by a non-hermitean Hamiltonian, depending analytically on time. Use of a super-adiabatic basis allows to calculate the non-adiabatic transition probability P in the slow-sweep limit, without specifying the Hamiltonian explicitly. It is found that P consists of a ``dynamical'' and a ``geometrical'' factors. The former is determined by the complex adiabatic eigenvalues E_(t), only, whereas the latter solely requires the knowledge of α_(+-)(t), the ratio of the components of each of the adiabatic eigenstates. Both factors…
We analyze the influence of a dissipative environment on geometric phases in a quantum system subject to non-adiabatic evolution. We find dissipative contributions to the acquired phase and modification of dephasing, considering the cases of weak short-correlated noise as well as of slow quasi-stationary noise. Motivated by recent experiments, we find the leading non-adiabatic corrections to the results, known for the adiabatic limit.
Many quantum materials of interest, ex., bilayer graphene, possess a number of closely spaced but not fully degenerate bands near the Fermi level, where the coupling to the far detuned remote bands can induce Berry curvatures of the non-Abelian character in this active multiple-band manifold for transport effects. Under finite electric fields, non-adiabatic interband transition processes are expected to play significant roles in the associated Hall conduction. Here through an exemplified study on the valley Hall conduction in AB-stacked bilayer graphene, we show that the contribution arising f…
With use of the scheme of fast forward which realizes quasi-static or adiabatic dynamics in shortened time scale, we investigate a thermally-isolated ideal quantum gas confined in a rapidly dilating one-dimensional (1D) cavity with the time-dependent size $L=L(t)$. In the fast-forward variants of equation of states, i.e., Bernoulli's formula and Poisson's adiabatic equation, the force or 1D analog of pressure can be expressed as a function of the velocity ($\dot{L}$) and acceleration ($\ddot{L}$) of $L$ besides rapidly-changing state variables like effective temperature ($T$) and $L$ itself. T…
The ground-state potential and dipole moment of carbon monoxide: contributions from electronic correlation, relativistic effects, QED, adiabatic, and non-adiabatic corrections
Modeling linear absorption spectra of solvated chromophores is highly challenging as contributions are present both from coupling of the electronic states to nuclear vibrations and solute-solvent interactions. In systems where excited states intersect in the Condon region, significant non-adiabatic contributions to absorption lineshapes can also be observed. Here, we introduce a robust approach to model linear absorption spectra accounting for both environmental and non-adiabatic effects from first principles. This model parameterizes a linear vibronic coupling (LVC) Hamiltonian directly from …
In Thouless pump, the charge transport in a one-dimensional insulator over an adiabatic cycle is topologically quantized. For nonequilibrium initial states, however, interband coherence will induce a previously unknown contribution to Thouless pumping. Though not geometric in nature, this contribution is independent of the time scale of the pumping protocol. In this work, we perform a detailed analysis of our previous finding [Phys. Rev. B 91, 085420 (2015)] in an already available cold-atom setup. We show that initial states with interband coherence can be obtained via a quench of the system'…
Geometric phases, which accompany the evolution of a quantum system and depend only on its trajectory in state space, are commonly studied in two-level systems. Here, however, we study the adiabatic geometric phase in a weakly anharmonic and strongly driven multi-level system, realised as a superconducting transmon-type circuit. We measure the contribution of the second excited state to the two-level geometric phase and find good agreement with theory treating higher energy levels perturbatively. By changing the evolution time, we confirm the independence of the geometric phase of time and exp…
We make use of a superconducting qubit to study the effects of noise on adiabatic geometric phases. The state of the system, an effective spin one-half particle, is adiabatically guided along a closed path in parameter space and thereby acquires a geometric phase. By introducing artificial fluctuations in the control parameters, we measure the geometric contribution to dephasing for a variety of noise powers and evolution times. Our results clearly show that only fluctuations which distort the path lead to geometric dephasing. In a direct comparison with the dynamic phase, which is path-indepe…
