We construct a measure for the adiabatic contribution to quantum transitions in an arbitrary basis, tackling the generic complex case where dynamics is only partially adiabatic, simultaneously populates several eigenstates and transitions between non-eigenstates are of key interest. Our measure is designed to distinguish transitions between basis states that occur due to the adiabatic change of the underlying populated eigenstates from transitions that occur due to beating between several such eigenstates. We demonstrate that the measure can be applied to material or molecular simulations using time-dependent density functional theory, allowing to quantify the relative importance of adiabaticity and thus nuclear motion, for example, in charge or energy transfer.
The ground-state potential and dipole moment of carbon monoxide: contributions from electronic correlation, relativistic effects, QED, adiabatic, and non-adiabatic corrections
Many quantum materials of interest, ex., bilayer graphene, possess a number of closely spaced but not fully degenerate bands near the Fermi level, where the coupling to the far detuned remote bands can induce Berry curvatures of the non-Abelian character in this active multiple-band manifold for transport effects. Under finite electric fields, non-adiabatic interband transition processes are expected to play significant roles in the associated Hall conduction. Here through an exemplified study on the valley Hall conduction in AB-stacked bilayer graphene, we show that the contribution arising f…
Suppressing unwanted transitions out of the instantaneous ground state is a major challenge in unitary adiabatic quantum computation. A recent approach consists in building counterdiabatic potentials approximated using variational strategies. In this contribution, we extend this variational approach to Lindbladian dynamics, having as a goal the suppression of diabatic transitions between pairs of Jordan blocks in quantum annealing. We show that, surprisingly, unitary counterdiabatic ansätze are successful for dissipative dynamics as well, allowing for easier experimental implementations compar…
In this thesis, it is presented a set of results in adiabatic dynamics (closed and open system) and transitionless quantum driving that promote some advances in our understanding on quantum control and Hamiltonian inverse engineering. In the context of adiabatic dynamics in closed systems, it is introduced a validation mechanism for the adiabaticity conditions by studing the system dynamics from a non-inertial reference frame. By considering a decohering scenario, validity conditions of the adiabatic approximation are also studied. As a fresh general result with potential applications, it is s…
Adiabatic quantum control protocols have been of wide interest to quantum computation due to their robustness and insensitivity to their actual duration of execution. As an extension of previous quantum learning algorithms, this work proposes to execute some quantum learning protocols based entirely on adiabatic quantum evolution, hence dubbed as ``adiabatic quantum learning". In a conventional quantum machine learning protocol, the output is usually the expectation value of a pre-selected observable and the projective measurement of which forces a quantum circuit to run many times to obtain t…
Trapped ions are one of the most promising platforms for quantum computing due to the longest qubit coherence times and the highest gate fidelities. However, scaling the number of ions (qubits) in a linear Coulomb crystal is the key difficulty on the way to multi-qubit systems. One of the promising pathways to scale the number of qubits is to implement the pulsed non-adiabatic gates based on the sequence of State Dependent Kicks (SDKs). We have analytically and numerically studied the influence of coherent effects in the SDK sequence and, correspondingly, have deduced the influence of the indi…
Interband coherence induced correction to Thouless pumping: possible observation in cold-atom systems
Rev.
We present a unified approach to study continuous measurement based quantum thermal machines in static as well as adiabatically driven systems. We investigate both steady state and transient dynamics for the time-independent case. In the adiabatically driven case, we show how measurement based thermodynamic quantities can be attributed geometric characteristics. We also provide the appropriate definition for heat transfer and dissipation owing to continous measurement in the presence and absence of adiabatic driving. We illustrate the aforementioned ideas and study the phenomena of refrigerati…
Efficient initialization and manipulation of quantum states is important for numerous applications and it usually requires the ability to perform high fidelity and robust swapping of the populations of quantum states. Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) has been known to perform efficient and robust inversion of the ground states populations of a three-level system. However, its performance is sensitive to the initial state of the system. In this contribution we demonstrate that a slight modification of STIRAP, where we introduce a non-zero single-photon detuning, allows for efficient …
It is challenged only recently that the precision attainable in any measurement of a physical parameter is fundamentally limited by the quantum Cramér-Rao Bound (QCRB). Here, targeting at measuring parameters in strongly dissipative systems, we propose an innovative measurement scheme called {\it dissipative adiabatic measurement} and theoretically show that it can beat the QCRB. Unlike projective measurements, our measurement scheme, though consuming more time, does not collapse the measured state and, more importantly, yields the expectation value of an observable as its measurement outcome,…
Unitary drivings of quantum systems are ubiquitous in experiments and applications of quantum mechanics and the underlying energetic aspects, particularly relevant in quantum thermodynamics, are receiving growing attention. We investigate energetic advantages in unitary driving obtained from initial non-thermal states. We introduce the non-cyclic ergotropy to quantify the energetic gains, from which coherent (coherence-based) and incoherent (population-based) contributions are identified. In particular, initial quantum coherences appear to be always beneficial whereas non-passive population di…

Rev. Lett.
Considering two non-interacting qubits in the context of open quantum systems, it is well known that their common environment may act as an entangling agent. In a perturbative regime the influence of the environment on the system dynamics can effectively be described by a unitary and a dissipative contribution. For the two-spin Boson model with (sub-) Ohmic spectral density considered here, the particular unitary contribution (Lamb shift) easily explains the buildup of entanglement between the two qubits. Furthermore it has been argued that in the adiabatic limit, adding the so-called countert…
The aim of quantum metrology is to estimate target parameters as precisely as possible. In this paper, we consider quantum metrology based on symmetry-protected adiabatic transformation. We introduce a ferromagnetic Ising model with a transverse field as a probe and consider the estimation of a longitudinal field. Without the transverse field, the ground state of the probe is given by the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state, and thus the Heisenberg limit estimation of the longitudinal field can be achieved through parity measurement. In our scheme, full information of the longitudinal field enco…
We propose an adiabatic method for optimal phonon temperature estimation using trapped ions which can be operated beyond the Lamb-Dicke regime. The quantum sensing technique relies on a time-dependent red-sideband transition of phonon modes, described by the non-linear Jaynes-Cummings model in general. A unique feature of our sensing technique is that the relevant information of the phonon thermal distributions can be transferred to the collective spin-degree of freedom. We show that each of the thermal state probabilities is adiabatically mapped onto the respective collective spin-excitation …
