The infrared structure of MHV gluon amplitudes in ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory is considered in the next-to-leading order of PT. Explicit cancelation of the infrared divergencies in properly defined cross-sections is demonstrated. The remaining finite parts for some inclusive differential cross-sections are calculated analytically. In general, contrary to the virtual corrections, they do not reveal any simple structure.
We investigate the non-perturbative renormalization group behavior of the gauge coupling constant using a truncated form of the functional flow equation for the effective average action of the Yang-Mills-gravity system. We find a non-zero quantum gravity correction to the standard Yang-Mills beta function which has the same sign as the gauge boson contribution. Our results fit into the picture according to which Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG) is asymptotically safe, with a vanishing gauge coupling constant at the non-trivial fixed point.
We investigate the 2-point correlation functions of Yang-Mills theory in the Landau gauge by means of a massive extension of the Faddeev-Popov action. This model is based on some phenomenological arguments and constraints on the ultraviolet behavior of the theory. We show that the running coupling constant remains finite at all energy scales (no Landau pole) for $d>2$ and argue that the relevant parameter of perturbation theory is significantly smaller than 1 at all energies. Perturbative results at low orders are therefore expected to be satisfactory and we indeed find a very good agreement b…
Pure Yang-Mills SU(N) theory is studied in four dimensional space and Landau gauge by a double perturbative expansion based on a massive free-particle propagator. By dimensional regularization, all diverging mass terms cancel exactly in the double expansion, without the need to include mass counterterms that would spoil the symmetry of the original Lagrangian. The emerging perturbation theory is safe in the infrared and shares the same behaviour of the standard perturbation theory in the UV. At one-loop, gluon and ghost propagators are found in excellent agreement with the data of lattice simu…
We discuss the non-perturbative renormalization group evolution of the gauge coupling constant by using a truncated form of the functional flow equation for the effective average action of the Yang-Mills-gravity system. Our result is consistent with the conjecture that Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG) is asymptotically safe and has a vanishing gauge coupling constant at the non-trivial fixed point.
We study the behaviour of Yang-Mills theory under the inclusion of gravity. In the weak- gravity limit, the running gauge coupling receives no contribution from the gravitational sector, if all symmetries are preserved. This holds true with and without cosmological constant. We also show that asymptotic freedom persists in general field-theory-based gravity scenarios including gravitational shielding as well as asymptotically safe gravity.
Generalizing disorder couplings of the SYK model by means of SU(N) matrices we formulate a lattice model of fermions in d+1 dimensions. Integration of fermions yields an effective theory of Yang-Mills fields in d dimensions, the latter approaching the standard Yang-Mills theory in the case of heavy fermions and the classical limit of vanishing coupling constant of the theory. Quantum mechanically, the theory is solved using large N approximation of the dual effective theory of Hermitian matrices in d dimensions. The theory is asymptotically free and confines the color. In case of massless ferm…
We propose a method for the evaluation of Witten index in D=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills quantum mechanics. We rederive a known result for the SU(2) gauge group and generalize it to any SU(N) gauge group.
We study a scalar component of the 8-point next-to-next-to-maximally-helicity-violating (N${}^2$MHV) amplitude at two-loop level in ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory; it has a leading singularity proportional to the inverse of the four-mass-box square root and receives contributions from only two types of non-trivial integrals with one-loop infrared (IR) divergences. We compute such two-loop 8-point integrals by taking (double-)collinear limits of certain finite, dual-conformal-invariant integrals, and they nicely give the IR-safe ratio function after subtracting divergences. As the first g…
For the general renormalizable N=1 supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory, regularized by higher covariant derivatives, a two-loop beta-function is calculated. It is shown that all integrals, needed for obtaining this function, can be easily calculated, because they are integrals of total derivatives.
Confinement of N=1 Super Yang-Mills from Supergravity
We report on the work presented in Phys. Lett. B712 (2012) 97, where a new one-parameter family of Landau gauges has been proposed for Yang-Mills theories, inspired by an analogy with disordered systems in condensed matter physics. This is based on a particular average over Gribov copies which avoids the Neuberger zero problem of the standard Fadeev-Popov construction. The proposed gauge fixing can be formulated as a local renormalizable field theory in four dimensions and is well-suited for analytical calculations. A remarkable feature is that, for what concerns the calculation of ghost and g…
We report our findings on the perturbative structure of ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory in the infrared sector by computing inclusive scattering cross sections of on-shell particles. We use half-BPS, energy-momentum tensor and Konishi operators to produce singlet states in the scattering processes to probe the soft and the collinear properties of the cross sections. By appropriately defining the infrared safe observables, we obtain collinear splitting functions up to second order in the perturbation theory. The splitting functions and the infrared finite cross sections demo…
We study and construct non-abelian hermitian Yang-Mills (HYM) instantons on Calabi-Yau cones. By means of a particular isometry preserving ansatz, the HYM equations are reduced to a novel Higgs-Yang-Mills flow on the Einstein-Kahler base. For any 2d-dimensional Calabi-Yau cone, we find explicit solutions of the flow equations that correspond to non-trivial SU(d) HYM instantons. These can be regarded as deformations of the spin connection of the Calabi-Yau cone.
We formulate ${\cal N} = 2^*$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on a Euclidean spacetime lattice using the method of topological twisting. The lattice formulation preserves one scalar supersymmetry charge at finite lattice spacing. The lattice theory is also local, gauge invariant and free from doublers. We can use the lattice formulation of ${\cal N} = 2^*$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills to study finite temperature nonperturbative sectors of the theory and thus validate the gauge-gravity duality conjecture in a nonconformal theory.
Traditional calculations in perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) are based on an order-by-order expansion in the strong coupling $α_s$. Observables that are calculable in this way are known as "safe". Recently, a class of unsafe observables was discovered that do not have a valid $α_s$ expansion but are nevertheless calculable in pQCD using all-orders resummation. These observables are called "Sudakov safe" since singularities at each $α_s$ order are regulated by an all-orders Sudakov form factor. In this letter, we give a concrete definition of Sudakov safety based on conditional probab…
We study the Landau gauge correlators of Yang-Mills fields for infrared Euclidean momenta in the context of a massive extension of the Faddeev-Popov Lagrangian which, we argue, underlies a variety of continuum approaches. Standard (perturbative) renormalization group techniques with a specific, infrared-safe renormalization scheme produce so-called decoupling and scaling solutions for the ghost and gluon propagators, which correspond to nontrivial infrared fixed points. The decoupling fixed point is infrared stable and weakly coupled, while the scaling fixed point is unstable and generically s…
Pure Yang-Mills SU(N) theory is studied in the Landau gauge and four dimensional space. While leaving the original Lagrangian unmodified, a double perturbative expansion is devised, based on a massive free-particle propagator. In dimensional regularization, all diverging mass terms cancel exactly in the double expansion, without the need to include mass counterterms that would spoil the symmetry of the Lagrangian. No free parameters are included that were not in the original theory, yielding a fully analytical approach from first principles. The expansion is safe in the infrared and is equival…
We briefly review the place of the Toda closed chain and the Toda field theory in solution to the $\cal{N}$=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. The classical and quantum aspects of the correspondence are mentioned and the role of branes as degrees of freedom is emphasized.
