We present new low resolution Spitzer mid-infrared spectroscopy of a sample of 20 ROSAT selected local Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s). We detect strong AGN continuum in all and clear PAH emission in 70% of the sources. The 6.2 micron PAH luminosity spans three orders of magnitudes, from ~10^(39) erg/s to ~10^(42) erg/s providing strong evidence for intense ongoing star formation in the circumnuclear regions of these sources. Using the IRS/Spitzer archive we gather a large number of additional NLS1s and their broad line counterparts (BLS1s) and constructed NLS1 and BLS1 sub-samples to compare them in various ways. The comparison shows a clear separation according to FWHM(H_beta) such that objects with narrower broad H_beta lines are the strongest PAH emitters. We test this division in various ways trying to remove biases due to luminosity and aperture size. Specifically, we find that star formation activity around NLS1 AGN is larger than around BLS1 of the same AGN luminosity. The above result seems to hold over the entire range of distance and luminosity. Moreover the star formation rate is higher in low black hole mass and high L/L_Edd systems indicating that black hole growth and star formation are occurring simultaneously.
We performed an analysis of the mid-infared properties of the 12micron Seyfert sample, a complete unbiased 12micron flux limited sample of local Seyfert galaxies selected from the IRAS Faint Source Catalog, based on low resolution spectra obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on-board Spitzer Space Telescope. A detailed presentation of this analysis is dicussed in Wu et al. (2009). We find that on average, the 15-30micron slope of the continuum is -0.85+/-0.61 for Seyfert 1s and -1.53+/-0.84 for Seyfert 2s, and there is substantial scatter in each type. Moreover, nearly 32% of Seyfert …
We present low-resolution 5.5-35 um spectra for 103 galaxies from the 12 um Seyfert sample, a complete unbiased 12 um flux limited sample of local Seyfert galaxies selected from the IRAS Faint Source Catalog, obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on-board Spitzer Space Telescope. For 70 of the sources observed in the IRS mapping mode, uniformly extracted nuclear spectra are presented for the first time. We performed an analysis of the continuum emission, the strength of the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) and astronomical silicate features of the sources. We find that on average,…
We present the Spitzer 10-37um IRS high resolution (R~600) spectroscopic survey of the Seyfert galaxies of the 12 micron Galaxy Sample. The new spectra of 61 galaxies, with those already published, gives us a total of 91 12micron Seyfert galaxies observed, out of 112. We use an improved AGN classification for Seyfert galaxies: instead of the type 1 and 2 classes, we use the spectropolarimetric data to divide them into "AGN 1" and "AGN 2", where AGN 1's include all broad-line objects, including the Seyfert 2's showing hidden broad lines in polarized light, while AGN 2's contains only Seyferts w…
The mid-far-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 83 active galaxies, mostly Seyfert galaxies, selected from the extended 12 micron sample are presented. The data were collected using all three instruments, IRAC, IRS, and MIPS, aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The IRS data were obtained in spectral mapping mode, and the photometric data from IRAC and IRS were extracted from matched, 20 arcsec diameter circular apertures. The MIPS data were obtained in SED mode, providing very low resolution spectroscopy (R ~ 20) between ~ 55 and 90 microns in a larger, 20 by 30 arcsec synthetic a…
We present the results of Spitzer IRS low-resolution infrared 5-35 micron spectroscopy of 17 nearby ULIRGs at z < 0.2, optically classified as non-Seyferts. The presence of optically elusive, but intrinsically luminous, buried AGNs is investigated, based on the strengths of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission and silicate dust absorption features detected in the spectra. The signatures of luminous buried AGNs, whose intrinsic luminosities range up to ~10^12 Lsun, are found in eight sources. We combine these results with those of our previous research to investigate the energy function of …
The ensemble optical/ultraviolet variability of narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) type active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is investigated, based on a sample selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe-82 region with multi-epoch photometric scanning data. As a comparison a control sample of broad-line Seyfert 1 (BLS1) type AGNs is also incorporated. To quantify properly the intrinsic variation amplitudes and their uncertainties, a novel method of parametric maximum-likelihood is introduced, that has, as we argued, certain virtues over previously used methods. The majority of NLS1-type AGNs e…
Radio outflows of active galactic nuclei (AGN) are invoked in cosmological models as a key feedback mechanism in the latest phases of massive galaxy formation. Recently it has been suggested that the two major radio AGN populations -- the powerful high-excitation, and the weak low-excitation radio AGN (HERAGN and LERAGN, resp.) -- represent two earlier and later stages of massive galaxy build-up. To test this, here we make use of a local (0.04<z<0.1) sample of ~500 radio AGN with available optical spectroscopy, drawn from the FIRST, NVSS, SDSS, and 3CRR surveys. A clear dichotomy is found betw…
In a matched sample of Seyfert and quiescent galaxies we simultaneously probe the stellar and molecular gas kinematics from 1 kpc down to 50 pc with the aim of identifying the dynamical processes dictating black hole accretion rates. This first paper compares the global characteristics of a sample of ten galaxies. We find several differences within a radius of 500 pc that are correlated with Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) activity. The Seyferts have: (1) a more centrally concentrated nuclear stellar surface brightness with lower stellar luminosities beyond a radius of 100 pc, (2) a lower stella…
To optimally identify candidates of the Compton-thick (CT) active galactic nuclei (AGN) that contribute to the unresolved X-ray background in infrared surveys, a tracer of column density is desirable in addition to an AGN indicator. In a recent study, we aimed to test whether the 9.7 micron silicate absorption feature can be used for this purpose when seen at high optical depths. We found that the extreme criterion of optical thickness at 9.7 micron is efficient in identifying CT objects among local AGN. Having identified six of the nine CT AGN in the 12 micron sample with Spitzer and X-ray sp…
The Unified Model of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) has provided a successful explanation for the observed diversity of AGN in the local Universe. However, recent analysis of multi-wavelength spectral and image data suggests that the Unified Model is only a partial theory of AGN, and may need to be augmented to remain consistent with all observations. Recent studies using high spatial resolution ground- and space-based observations of local AGN show that Seyfert class and the "core" (r<~1 kpc) host-galaxy morphology are correlated. Currently, this relationship has only been established qualitati…
As the third paper of our serial studies that are aim at examining the AGN-host coevolution by using partially obscured AGNs, we extend the broad-line composite galaxies (composite AGNs) into ROSAT-selected Seyfert 1.8/1.9 galaxies basing upon the RASS/SDSS-DR5 catalog given by Anderson et al.. The SDSS spectra of in total 92 objects are analyzed by the same method used in our previous studies, after requiring the signal-to-noise ratio in the SDSS r' band is larger than 20. Combing the ROSAT-selected Seyfert galaxies with the composite AGNs reinforces the tight correlation between the line rat…
Aims. We present results of a comprehensive spectral study on the large-scale environment of AGNs based on Sloan Spectroscopic Survey data. Methods. We analyzed the spectra of galaxies in the environment of AGN and other activity classes up to distances of 1 Mpc. Results. The mean Hα and [OIII] λ5007 line luminosities in the environmental galaxies within a projected radius of 1 Mpc are highest around Seyfert 1 galaxies, with decreasing luminosities for Seyfert 2 and HII galaxies, and lowest for absorption line galaxies. Furthermore, there is a trend toward Hα and [OIII] luminosities in the env…
One of the remaining open issues in the context of the analysis of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is the evidence that nuclear gravitational accretion is often accompanied by a concurrent starburst (SB) activity. What is, in this picture, the role played by the obscuring dust around the nucleus and what do the state of the art AGN torus models have to say? Can the IR data provided by Spitzer and Herschel help us in extensively investigate both phenomena and, if so, how and with what limitations? In this paper we present our contribution to the efforts of answering these questions. We show some o…
Previous ground based observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 78 revealed a double set of emission lines, similar to those seen in several AGN from recent surveys. Are the double lines due to two AGN with different radial velocities in the same galaxy, or are they due to mass outflows from a single AGN?We present a study of the outflowing ionized gas in the resolved narrow-line region (NLR) of Mrk 78 using observations from Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and Faint Object Camera (FOC) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope(HST) as part of an ongoing project to determine the kinematics …
The INTEGRAL mission provides a large data set for studying the hard X-ray properties of AGN and allows testing of the unified scheme for AGN. We present analysis of INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI, JEM-X, and OMC data for 199 AGN supposedly detected by INTEGRAL above 20 keV. The data analysed here allow a significant spectral extraction on 148 objects and an optical variability study of 57 AGN. The slopes of the hard X-ray spectra of Seyfert 1 and Seyfert~2 galaxies are found to be consistent within the uncertainties, whereas higher cut-off energies and lower luminosities are measured for the more absorb…
We compare [O IV] 25.89 micron emission line luminosities with very hard (10-200 keV) X-rays from Swift, Integral, and BeppoSAX for a complete sample of 89 Seyferts from the Revised Shapley-Ames sample. Using Seyfert 1s, we calibrate [O IV] as a measure of AGN intrinsic luminosity, for particular use in high-obscuration environments. With this calibration, we measure the average decrement in 14-195 keV X-ray to [O IV] luminosity ratio for Seyfert 2s compared to type 1s. We find a decrement of 3.1 +- 0.8 for Seyfert 2s, and a decrement of 5.0 +- 2.7 for known Compton-thick Seyfert 2s. These dec…
Massive black holes (BHs) are detected in the centers of many nearby galaxies are linearly correlated with the luminosity of the host bulge (spheroid), the black hole mass being about 0.1% of the stellar mass. In active galaxies, the BH mass is best measured by the reverberation mapping (light echo) technique. We and others have shown that in AGNs the BH mass follows the same relation with the luminosity of the host galaxy as in ordinary (inactive) galaxies, with the exception of narrow line AGNs which apparently have significantly lower values of the BH/bulge mass (or BH/bulge luminosity) rat…
We have performed IRS low resolution 5-12 micron spectroscopy on a sample of galaxies selected to be at 3 distinct post-starburst evolutionary stages based on their optical spectral indices. The resulting IRS spectra show distinctive PAH emission line structures at 6.2, 7.7, 8.6 and 11.3 micron and little silicate absorption, indicative of ongoing star formation. However the PAH inter-line ratios, in particular the 11.3/6.2 micron and 7.7/6.2 micron ratio, show large variations. These variations are found to correlate with both time since the most recent starburst and AGN activity. We speculat…
We used the CLUMPY torus models and a Bayesian approach to fit the infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and ground-based high-angular resolution mid-infrared spectroscopy of 13 nearby Seyfert galaxies. This allowed us to put tight constraints on torus model parameters such as the viewing angle, the radial thickness of the torus Y, the angular size of the cloud distribution sigma_torus, and the average number of clouds along radial equatorial rays N_0. The viewing angle is not the only parameter controlling the classification of a galaxy into a type 1 or a type 2. In principle type 2s …
According to the unified model, the differences observed in different classes of AGN are due to anisotropic obscuration. This implies that in the hard X-rays, at energies where the radiation can pierce the obscuring material, the average spectral characteristics of different classes of AGN should be the same. Here we present a study of the 17-250 keV INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI average spectra of Seyfert galaxies, aimed to constrain similarities and possible differences between different classes of AGN. The sample we consists of all the 172 Seyfert galaxies detected by INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI at z<0.2 dur…
We quantify the active galactic nucleus (AGN) contribution to the mid-infrared (mid-IR) and the total infrared (IR, 8-1000micron) emission in a complete volume-limited sample of 53 local luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs). We decompose the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) low-resolution 5-38micron spectra of the LIRGs into AGN and starburst components using clumpy torus models and star-forming galaxy templates, respectively. We find that 50% (25/50) of local LIRGs have an AGN component detected with this method. There is good agreement between these AGN detections through mid-IR spectral de…
[Abridged] Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies are a class of active galactic nuclei (AGN) that have all the properties of type 1 Seyfert galaxies but show peculiar characteristics, including the narrowest Balmer lines, strongest Fe II emission, and extreme properties in the X-rays. Line and continuum radio observations provide an optimal tool to access the (often) optically obscured innermost regions of AGN and reveal the kinematics of the gas around their central engines. We investigate the interplay between the peculiar NLS1 class of AGN and the maser phenomenon, to help us understand the…
Infrared-faint radio sources (IFRSs) are a rare class of object which are relatively bright at radio wavelengths but very faint at infrared and optical wavelengths. Here we present sensitive near-infrared observations of a sample of these sources taken as part of the Spitzer Extragalactic Representative Volume Survey (SERVS). Nearly all the IFRSs are undetected at a level of ~ 1 μ$Jy in these new deep observations, and even the detections are consistent with confusion with unrelated galaxies. A stacked image implies that the median flux density is $S_{3.6μm} ~ 0.2$ μ$Jy or less, giving extreme…
Hawkins (2004) reported on a class of "naked" AGN characterized by strong amplitude optical brightness variability and the complete absence of broad emission lines in the optical spectrum. The variability suggests that the nucleus is seen directly, however the absence of broad lines contradicts the simple formulation of Unified Models for AGN. We present the results of quasi-simultaneous spectroscopic observations with XMM-Newton and NTT (La Silla) of two "naked" AGN. We confirm the "naked" nature of Q2131-427 for which no broad emission line components have been detected in the optical spectr…
We have studied the relationship between the nuclear (high-resolution) radio emission, at 8.4 GHz (3.6 cm) and 1.4 GHz (20 cm), the [O IV] 25.89um, [Ne III] 15.56um and [Ne II] 12.81um emission lines and the black hole mass accretion rate for a sample of Seyfert galaxies. In order to characterize the radio contribution for the Seyfert nuclei we used the 8.4GHz/[O IV] ratio, assuming that [O IV] scales with the luminosity of the AGN. From this we find that Seyfert 1's (i.e., Seyfert 1.0's, 1.2's, and 1.5's) and Seyfert 2's (i.e., Seyfert 1.8's, 1.9's, and 2.0's) have similar radio contributions…
We report the discovery with Fermi/LAT of gamma-ray emission from three radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies: PKS 1502+036 (z=0.409), 1H 0323+342 (z=0.061) and PKS 2004-447 (z=0.24). In addition to PMN J0948+0022 (z=0.585), the first source of this type to be detected in gamma rays, they may form an emerging new class of gamma-ray active galactic nuclei (AGN). These findings can have strong implications on our knowledge about relativistic jets and the unified model of AGN.
We use Spitzer IRS spectroscopy to study the nature 65 IR-luminous galaxies at 0.02 < z < 0.6 with F(24micron) > 1.2mJy. The IRS spectra cover wavelengths spanning the PAH features and important atomic diagnostic lines. Our sample corresponds to L(IR) = L(8-1000micron) = 10^10-10^12 Lsun. We divide our galaxies into those with Spitzer IRAC colors indicative of warm dust heated by an AGN (IRAGN) and those whose colors indicate star-formation processes (non-IRAGN). Compared to the non-IRAGN, the IRAGN show smaller PAH emission EWs, which we attribute to an increase in mid-IR continuum from the A…
We present new mid-infrared (MIR) imaging data for three Type-1 Seyfert galaxies obtained with T-ReCS on the Gemini-South Telescope at subarcsecond resolution. Our aim is to enlarge the sample studied in a previous work to compare the properties of Type-1 and Type-2 Seyfert tori using clumpy torus models and a Bayesian approach to fit the infrared nuclear spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Thus, the sample considered here comprises 7 Type-1, 11 Type-2, and 3 intermediate-type Seyferts. The unresolved IR emission of the Seyfert 1 galaxies can be reproduced by a combination of dust heated by …
We investigate claims according to which the X-ray selection of AGN is not as efficient compared to that based on [OIII] selection because of the effects of X-ray absorption. We construct the predicted X-ray luminosity function both for all Seyferts as well as separately for Seyfert-1 and Seyfert-2 type galaxies, by combining the optical AGN [OIII] luminosity functions derived in SDSS with the corresponding L_X-L_[OIII] relations. These relations are derived from XMM-Newton observations of all Seyfert galaxies in the Palomar spectroscopic sample of nearby galaxies after correction for X-ray abs…
The INTEGRAL mission provides a large data set for studying the hard X-ray properties of AGN and allows to test the unified scheme for AGN. We present results based on the analysis of 199 AGN. A difference between the Seyfert types is detected in slightly flatter spectra with higher cut-off energies and lower luminosities for the more absorbed/type 2 AGN. When applying a Compton reflection model, the underlying continua (photon index 1.95) appear the same in Seyfert 1 and 2, and the reflection strength is R=1 in both cases, with differences in the inclination angle only. A difference is seen i…
We estimate the relative contributions of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) accretion disk, corona, and obscuring torus to the bolometric luminosity of Seyfert galaxies, using Spizter mid-infrared (MIR) observations of a complete sample of 68 nearby active galactic nuclei from the INTEGRAL all-sky hard X-ray (HX) survey. This is the first HX-selected (above 15 keV) sample of AGNs with complementary high angular resolution, high signal to noise, MIR data. Correcting for the host galaxy contribution, we find a correlation between HX and MIR luminosities: L_MIR L_HX^(0.74+/-0.06). Assuming that …
The discovery of gamma-ray emission from 5 radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies revealed the presence of a possible emerging third class of AGNs with relativistic jets, in addition to blazars and radio galaxies. The existence of relativistic jets also in this subclass of Seyfert galaxies opened an unexplored research space for our knowledge of the radio-loud AGNs. Here, we discuss the radio-to-gamma-rays properties of the gamma-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies, also in comparison with the blazar scenario.
We present luminosity functions derived from a spectroscopic survey of AGN selected from Spitzer Space Telescope imaging surveys. Selection in the mid-infrared is significantly less affected by dust obscuration. We can thus compare the luminosity functions of the obscured and unobscured AGN in a more reliable fashion than by using optical or X-ray data alone. We find that the AGN luminosity function can be well described by a broken power-law model in which the break luminosity decreases with redshift. At high redshifts ($z>1.6$), we find significantly more AGN at a given bolometric luminosity…
We report X-ray constraints for 20 of 52 high-z ULIRGs identified in the Spitzer xFLS to constrain their obscuration. Notably, decomposition of Spitzer-IRS spectra for the 52 objects already indicates that most are weak-PAH ULIRGs dominated by hot-dust continua, characteristic of AGN. Given their redshifts, they have AGN bolometric luminosities of ~1e45-1e47 erg/s comparable to powerful QSOs. This, coupled with their high IR-to-optical ratios and often significant silicate absorption, strongly argues in favor of these mid-IR objects being heavily obscured QSOs. At X-ray energies, we marginally…
As part of an extensive study of the physical properties of active galactic nuclei (AGN) we report high spatial resolution near-IR integral-field spectroscopy of the narrow-line region (NLR) and coronal-line region (CLR) of seven Seyfert galaxies. These measurements elucidate for the first time the two-dimensional spatial distribution and kinematics of the recombination line Brγ and high-ionization lines [Sivi], [Alix] and [Caviii] on scales <300 pc from the AGN. The observations reveal kinematic signatures of rotation and outflow in the NLR and CLR. The spatially resolved kinematics can be mo…
We present a deep study of the average hard X-ray spectra of Seyfert galaxies. We analyzed all public INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI data available on all the 165 Seyfert galaxies detected at z<0.2. Our final sample consists of 44 Seyfert 1's, 29 Seyfert 1.5's, 78 Seyfert 2's, and 14 Narrow Line Seyfert 1's. We derived the average hard X-ray spectrum of each subsample in the 17-250keV energy range. All classes of Seyfert galaxies show on average the same nuclear continuum, as foreseen by the zeroth order unified model, with a cut-off energy of Ec>200keV, and a photon index of Gamma ~1.8. Compton-thin Sey…
Before the launch of the Fermi satellite only two classes of AGNs were known to produce relativistic jets and thus emit up to the gamma-ray energy range: blazars and radio galaxies, both hosted in giant elliptical galaxies. The first four years of observations by the Large Area Telescope on board Fermi confirmed that these two are the most numerous classes of identified sources in the extragalactic gamma-ray sky, but the discovery of gamma-ray emission from 5 radio-loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies revealed the presence of a possible emerging third class of AGNs with relativistic jets. Consi…
We present the combined Chandra and Swift-BAT spectral analysis of seven Seyfert 2 galaxies selected from the Swift-BAT 100-month catalog. We selected nearby (z<=0.03) sources lacking of a ROSAT counterpart and never previously observed with Chandra in the 0.3-10 keV energy range, and targeted these objects with 10 ks Chandra ACIS-S observations. The X-ray spectral fitting over the 0.3-150 keV energy range allows us to determine that all the objects are significantly obscured, having NH>=1E23 cm^(-2) at a >99% confidence level. Moreover, one to three sources are candidate Compton thick Active …
We present preliminary results on the variability properties of AGN above 20 keV in order to show the potential of the INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI and Swift/BAT instruments for hard X-ray timing analysis of AGN. The 15-50 keV light curves of 36 AGN observed by BAT during 5 years show significantly larger variations when the blazar population is considered (average normalized excess variance = 0.25) with respect to the Seyfert one (average normalized excess variance = 0.09). The hard X-ray luminosity is found to be anti-correlated to the variability amplitude in Seyfert galaxies and correlated to the b…
The validity of the unified active galactic nuclei (AGN) model has been challenged in the last decade, especially when different types of AGNs are considered to only differ in the viewing angle to the torus. We aim to assess the importance of the viewing angle in classifying different types of Seyfert galaxies in spectral energy distribution (SED) modelling. We retrieve photometric data from publicly available astronomical databases: CDS and NED, to model SEDs with X-CIGALE in a sample of 13 173 Seyfert galaxies located at redshift range from $z=0$ to $z=3.5$, with a median redshift of $z\appr…
The [O IV] 25.89 micron line has been shown to be an accurate indicator of active galactic nucleus (AGN) intrinsic luminosity in that it correlates well with hard (10-200 keV) X-ray emission. We present measurements of [O IV] for 89 Seyfert galaxies from the unbiased Revised Shapley-Ames (RSA) sample. The [O IV] luminosity distributions of obscured and unobscured Seyferts are indistinguishable, indicating that their intrinsic AGN luminosities are quite similar and that the RSA sample is well suited for tests of the unified model. In addition, we analyze several commonly used proxies for AGN lu…
