We investigate claims according to which the X-ray selection of AGN is not as efficient compared to that based on [OIII] selection because of the effects of X-ray absorption. We construct the predicted X-ray luminosity function both for all Seyferts as well as separately for Seyfert-1 and Seyfert-2 type galaxies, by combining the optical AGN [OIII] luminosity functions derived in SDSS with the corresponding L_X-L_[OIII] relations. These relations are derived from XMM-Newton observations of all Seyfert galaxies in the Palomar spectroscopic sample of nearby galaxies after correction for X-ray absorption and optical reddening. We compare the predicted X-ray luminosity functions with those actually observed in the local Universe by HEAO-1, RXTE as well as INTEGRAL. The last luminosity function is derived in the 17-60 keV region and thus is not affected by absorption even in the case of Compton-thick sources. In the common luminosity regions, the optically and X-ray selected Seyfert galaxies show reasonable agreement. We thus find no evidence that the [OIII] selection provides a more robust tracer of powerful AGN compared to the X-ray. Still, the optical selection probes less luminous Seyferts compared to the current X-ray surveys. These low luminosity levels, are populated by a large number of X-ray unobscured Seyfert-2 galaxies.
There have been recent claims that a significant fraction of type 2 AGN accrete close or even above the Eddington limit. In type 2 AGN the bolometric luminosity (L_b) is generally inferred from the [OIII] emission line luminosity (L_OIII). The key issue, in order to estimate the bolometric luminosity in these AGN, is therefore to know the bolometric correction to be applied to L_OIII. A complication arises from the fact that the observed L_OIII is affected by extinction, likely due to dust within the narrow line region. The extinction-corrected [OIII] luminosity (L^c_OIII) is a better estimato…
Using a sample of 24264 optically selected AGNs from the SDSS DR7 database, we characterise how the profile of the [OIII] emission line relates to bolometric luminosity (L_Bol), Eddington ratio, radio loudness, radio luminosity (L_Rad) and optical class (Sy 1/2) to determine what drives the kinematics of this kpc-scale line emitting gas. Spectral stacking is used to characterise how the average [OIII] profile changes as a function of these variables. After accounting for the correlation between L_Bol and L_Rad, we report that L_Rad has the strongest influence on the [OIII] profile, with modera…
We present AGN from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) having double-peaked profiles of [OIII] 5007,4959 and other narrow emission-lines, motivated by the prospect of finding candidate binary AGN. These objects were identified by means of a visual examination of 21,592 quasars at z < 0.7 in SDSS Data Release 7 (DR7). Of the spectra with adequate signal-to-noise, 148 spectra exhibit a double-peaked [OIII] profile. Of these, 86 are Type 1 AGN and 62 are Type 2 AGN. Only two give the appearance of possibly being optically resolved double AGN in the SDSS images, but many show close companions or …
In this paper we study the relationship between the equivalent width (EW) of the [OIII]5007A narrow emission line in AGN and the level of obscuration. To this end, we combine the results of a systematic spectral analysis, both in the optical and in the X-rays, on a statistically complete sample of ~170 X-ray selected AGN from the XMM-Newton Bright Serendipitous Source sample (XBS). We find that the observed large range of [OIII]5007A equivalent widths observed in the sample (from a few A up to 500A) is well explained as a combination of an intrinsic spread, probably due to the large range of c…
We present a catalog of 213 type-2 AGN selected from the zCOSMOS survey. The selected sample covers a wide redshift range (0.15<z<0.92) and is deeper than any other previous study, encompassing the luminosity range 10^{5.5} < Lsun< L[OIII] < 10^{9.1} Lsun. We explore the intrinsic properties of these AGN and the relation to their X-ray emission (derived from the XMM-COSMOS observations). We study their evolution by computing the [OIII]5007A line luminosity function (LF) and we constrain the fraction of obscured AGN as a function of luminosity and redshift. The sample was selected on the basis …
Mergers are suspected to be reliable triggers of both starformation and AGN activity. However, the exact timing of this process remains poorly understood. Here, we present deep imaging and long slit spectroscopy data of a sample of four double-peaked [OIII] emitting AGN. These sources are often believed to host binary AGN, or at least be currently undergoing major mergers. The sample presented here either have previous IFU and high resolution imaging data that show double-nuclei in the IR as well as kinematicly and spatially distinct line emitting regions. Two sources have detections of double…
We explore the relative strength of the narrow emission lines in an SDSS based sample of broad H-alpha selected AGN, defined in paper I. We find a decrease in the narrow to broad H-alpha luminosity (L_bHa) ratio with increasing L_bHa, such that both L([OIII] lambda5007) and L(narrow H-alpha) scale as L_bHa^0.7 for 10^40 < L_bHa < 10^45 ergs s^-1. Following our earlier result that L_bHa \propto L_bol, this trend indicates that the relative narrow line luminosity decreases with increasing L_bol. We derive L_bol / 10^43 ergs s^-1 = 4000 (L([OIII]) / 10^43 ergs s^-1)^1.39. This implies that the bo…
We analyze a sample of 30,000 nearby obscured AGNs with optical spectra from SDSS and mid-IR photometry from WISE. Our aim is to investigate the AGN host galaxy properties with mid-IR luminosities as AGN activity indicator, and to compare with previous studies based on [OIII] emission lines. First we find that the [3.4] - [4.6] colour has weak dependence on host stellar age, but strong dependence on AGN activity. We then use a "pair-matching" technique to subtract the host 4.6 micron contribution. By combining Seyferts with a sample of SDSS quasars at z < 0.7, we show that the [OIII] and the i…
We use homogeneous samples of radio-quiet Seyfert 1 galaxies and QSOs selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to investigate the connection between the velocity shift and the equivalent width (EW) of the [OIII] 5007 emission line, and their correlations with physical parameters of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We find a significant and negative correlation between the EW of the core component, EW(core), and the blueshift of either the core (the peak), the wing, or the total profile of [OIII] emission; it is fairly strong for the blueshift of the total profile particularly. However, both qu…
Different physical processes in galaxy evolution, such as galaxy mergers that lead to coalescence of dual Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and outflows emanating from the narrow line region, can leave their imprint on the optical spectra of AGN in the form of double-peaked narrow emission lines. To investigate the neutral gas in the centres of such AGN, we have conducted a pilot survey of HI 21-cm absorption, using the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT), in radio-loud AGN whose optical spectra show double-peaked [OIII] emission lines at z<=0.4 (median z~0.14). Among the eight sources…
We consider five indicators for intrinsic AGN luminosity: the luminosities of the [OIII]$λ$5007 line, the [OIV]25.89$μ$m line, the mid-infrared (MIR) continuum emission by the torus, and the radio and hard X-ray (E $>$ 10keV) continuum emission. We compare these different proxies using two complete samples of low-redshift type 2 AGN selected in a homogeneous way based on different indicators: an optically selected [OIII] sample and a mid-infrared selected 12$μ$m sample. We examine the correlations between all five different proxies, and find better agreement for the [OIV], MIR, and [OIII] lumi…
The Swift/BAT nine-month survey observed 153 AGN, all with ultra-hard X-ray BAT fluxes in excess of 10^-11 erg cm^-2 s^-1 and an average redshift of 0.03. Among them, four of the most luminous BAT AGN (44.73 < Log L(BAT) < 45.31) were selected as targets of Suzaku follow-up observations: J2246.0+3941 (3C 452), J0407.4+0339 (3C 105), J0318.7+6828, and J0918.5+0425. The column density, scattered/reflected emission, the properties of the Fe K line, and a possible variability are fully analyzed. For the latter, the spectral properties from Chandra, XMM-Newton and Swift/XRT public observations were…
We divide a sample of 302 type-1 AGNs into two subsamples based on the narrow line [OIII]/Hbeta_{NLR} ratio, since we expect that there will be a stronger starburst (HII region) contribution to the narrow line emission for R=log([OIII]/Hbeta_{NLR})<0.5. For the two samples we {find significant differences in correlations between} spectral properties of objects with $R<0.5$ and R>0.5. {We find similar differences when we divided the sample based on the FWHM ratios of [OIII] and broad Hbeta lines (R_1=log(FWHM[OIII]/FWHM Hbeta_broad)^>_<-0.8), i.e. similar correlations between R>0.5 and R_1<-0.8…
We present the first spectroscopic measurements of the [OIII] 5007 A line in two z ~ 3.1 Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) using the new near-infrared instrument LUCIFER1 on the 8.4m Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). We also describe the optical imaging and spectroscopic observations used to identify these Lya emitting galaxies. Using the [OIII] line we have measured accurate systemic redshifts for these two galaxies, and discovered a velocity offset between the [OIII] and Ly-alpha lines in both, with the Lya line peaking 342 and 125 km/s redward of the systemic velocity. These velocity offs…
We have made the first detections of the 88 micron [OIII] line from galaxies in the early Universe, detecting the line from the lensed AGN/starburst composite systems APM 08279+5255 at z = 3.911 and SMM J02399-0136 at z = 2.8076. The line is exceptionally bright from both systems, with apparent (lensed) luminosities ~10^11 L_solar. For APM 08279, the [OIII] line flux can be modeled in a star formation paradigm, with the stellar radiation field dominated by stars with effective temperatures, Teff >36,000 K, similar to the starburst found in M82. The model implies ~35% of the total far-IR lumino…
Aims. We present results of a comprehensive spectral study on the large-scale environment of AGNs based on Sloan Spectroscopic Survey data. Methods. We analyzed the spectra of galaxies in the environment of AGN and other activity classes up to distances of 1 Mpc. Results. The mean Hα and [OIII] λ5007 line luminosities in the environmental galaxies within a projected radius of 1 Mpc are highest around Seyfert 1 galaxies, with decreasing luminosities for Seyfert 2 and HII galaxies, and lowest for absorption line galaxies. Furthermore, there is a trend toward Hα and [OIII] luminosities in the env…
The Swift Gamma-Ray Burst satellite has detected a largely unbiased towards absorption sample of local ($<z> \approx 0.03$) AGN, based solely on their 14--195 keV flux. In the first 9 months of the survey, 153 AGN sources were detected. The X-ray properties in the 0.3--10 keV band have been compiled and presented based on analyses with XMM-Newton, Chandra, Suzaku, and the Swift XRT (Winter et al. 2009). Additionally, we have compiled a sub-sample of sources with medium resolution optical ground-based spectra from the SDSS or our own observations at KPNO. In this sample of 60 sources, we have c…
In this paper we study the properties of the optical spectra of Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) by using the unobscured hard X-ray emission as a diagnostic. We develop the `Correlation Spectrum Technique' (CST) and use this to show the strength of correlation between the hard X-ray luminosity and each wavelength of the optical spectrum. This shows that for Broad Line Seyfert 1s all the strong emission lines (broad component of Hαand Hβ, [NeIII] λλ3869/3967, [OI] λλ6300/6364, [OII] λλ3726/3729, [OIII] λλ4959/5007) and the optical underlying continuum all strongly correlate with the hard X-…
The AGN-host co-evolution issue is investigated here by focusing on the evolution of the [\ion{O}{3}]$\lambda5007$ emission-line profile. In order to simultaneously measure both [\ion{O}{3}] line profile and circumnuclear stellar population in individual spectrum, a large sample of narrow emission-line galaxies is selected from the MPA/JHU SDSS DR7 catalog. By requiring that 1) the [\ion{O}{3}] line signal-to-noise ratio is larger than 30, 2) the [\ion{O}{3}] line width is larger than the instrumental resolution by a factor of 2, our sample finally contains 2,333 Seyfert galaxies/LINERs (AGNs)…
We present K-band spectra of rest-frame optical emission lines for 24 star-forming galaxies at z~3.2-3.7 using MOSFIRE on the Keck 1 telescope. Strong rest-frame optical [O III] and Hbeta emission lines were detected in 18 LBGs. The median flux ratio of [O III]5007 to Hbeta is 5.1+/-0.5, a factor of 5-10x higher than in local galaxies with similar stellar masses. The observed Hbeta luminosities are in good agreement with expectations from the estimated star-formation rates, and none of our sources are detected in deep X-ray stacks, ruling out significant contamination by active galactic nuclei…
Our aim is to explore the nature of emission line galaxies by combining high-resolution observations obtained in different bands to understand which objects are powered by an Active Galactic Nucleus(AGN). From the spectroscopic Palomar survey of nearby bright galaxies, we selected a sample of 18 objects observed with HST, Chandra, and VLA. No connection is found between X-ray and emission line luminosities from ground-based data, unlike what is found for brighter AGN. Conversely, a strong correlation emerges when using the HST spectroscopic data, which are extracted on a much smaller aperture.…
We have used the SINFONI near-infrared integral field unit on the VLT to resolve the optical emission line structure of one of the brightest (L~1e44 erg/s) and nearest (z=2.38) of all Lya blobs (LABs). The target, known in the literature as object 'B1' (Francis et al. 1996), lies at a redshift where the main optical emission lines are accessible in the observed near-infrared. We detect luminous [OIII]4959,5007A and Ha emission with a spatial extent of at least 32x40 kpc (4"x5"). The dominant optical emission line component shows relatively broad lines (600-800 km/s, FWHM) and line ratios consi…
We present a study of the optical spectral properties of 115 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) in the southern sky. Using the optical spectra obtained at CTIO 4 m and provided by the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey and the 6dF Galaxy Survey, we measure emission line widths and fluxes for spectral classification. We determine the spectral types of ULIRGs with H_alpha measurement using the standard diagnostic diagrams. For ULIRGs without H_alpha measurement, we determine their spectral types using the plane of flux ratio between [OIII]_lambda5007 and H_beta versus [OIII] line width based on ou…
We present Spitzer photometric data for a complete sample of 19 low redshift (z<0.1) 3CRR radio galaxies as part of our efforts to understand the origin of the prodigious mid- to far-infrared (MFIR) emission from radio-loud AGN. Our results show a correlation between AGN power (indicated by [OIII] 5007 emission line luminosity) and 24 micron luminosity. This result is consistent with the 24 micron thermal emission originating from warm dust heated directly by AGN illumination. Applying the same correlation test for 70 micron luminosity against [OIII] luminosity we find this relation to suffer …
Based on high-resolution, spatially resolved data of 10 z~2 star-forming galaxies from the SINS/zC-SINF survey and LUCI data for 12 additional galaxies, we probe the excitation properties of high-z galaxies and the impact of active galactic nuclei (AGN), shocks and photoionization. We explore how these spatially-resolved line ratios can inform our interpretation of integrated emission line ratios obtained at high redshift. Many of our galaxies fall in the `composite' region of the z~0 [NII]/Ha versus [OIII]/Hb diagnostic (BPT) diagram, between star-forming galaxies and those with AGN. Based on…
We present [OIII 5007A] observations of the star forming galaxy HDF-BMZ1299 (z=1.598) using Keck Observatory's Adaptive Optics system with the near-infrared integral field spectrograph OSIRIS. Using previous Halpha and [NII] measurements of the same source, we are able for the first time to use spatially resolved observations to place a high-redshift galaxy's substructure on a traditional HII diagnostic diagram. We find that HDF-BMZ1299's spatially concentrated nebular ratios in the central ~1.5 kiloparsec (0."2) are best explained by the presence of an AGN: log([NII]/Halpha)=-0.22+/-0.05 and …
We study the optical properties of the host galaxies of nuclear 22 GHz (lambda=1.35 cm) water masers. To do so, we cross-match the galaxy sample surveyed for water maser emission (123 detections and 3806 non-detections) with the SDSS low-redshift galaxy sample (z<0.05). Out of 1636 galaxies with SDSS photometry, we identify 48 detections; out of the 1063 galaxies that also have SDSS spectroscopy, we identify 33 detections. We find that maser detection rate is higher at higher optical luminosity (M_B), larger velocity dispersion ($σ$), and higher [OIII]5007 luminosity, with [OIII]5007 being the…
We present a multiwavelength study of the AGN-host starburst galaxy PKS 0529-549 at z~2.6. We use (1) new ALMA observations of the dust continuum and of the [CI] 370 um line, tracing molecular gas, (2) SINFONI spectroscopy of the [OIII] 5007 Ang line, tracing ionized gas, and (3) ATCA radio continuum images, tracing synchrotron emission. Both [CI] and [OIII] show regular velocity gradients, but their systemic velocities and position angles differ by ~300 km/s and ~30 degrees, respectively. The [CI] is consistent with a rotating disc, aligned with the dust and stellar continuum, while the [OIII…
Standardizing reverberation-mapped H$β$ active galactic nuclei using time-averaged radius$-$luminosity relations with 5100\,Å\,, broad H$β$, and narrow \OIII\ luminosities
We present an analysis of the kinematics and excitation of the warm ionized gas in two obscured, powerful quasars at z>=3.5 from the SWIRE survey, SWIRE J022513.90-043419.9 and SWIRE J022550.67-042142, based on imaging spectroscopy on the VLT. Line ratios in both targets are consistent with luminous narrow-line regions of AGN. SWIRE J022550.67-042142 has very broad (FWHM=2000 km/s), spatially compact [OIII] line emission. SWIRE J022513.90-043419.9 is spatially resolved, has complex line profiles of H-beta and [OIII], including broad wings with blueshifts of up to -1500 km/s relative to the nar…
Optical nebular emission lines are commonly used to estimate the star formation rate of galaxies and the black hole accretion rate of their central active nucleus. The accuracy of the conversion from line strengths to physical properties depends upon the accuracy to which the lines can be corrected for dust attenuation. For studies of single galaxies with normal amounts of dust, most dust corrections result in the same derived properties within the errors. However, for statistical studies of populations of galaxies, or for studies of galaxies with higher dust contents such as might be found in…
We present some of the first science data with the new Keck/MOSFIRE instrument to test the effectiveness of different AGN/SF diagnostics at z~1.5. MOSFIRE spectra were obtained in three H-band multi-slit masks in the GOODS-S field, resulting in two hour exposures of 36 emission-line galaxies. We compare X-ray data with the traditional emission-line ratio diagnostics and the alternative mass-excitation and color-excitation diagrams, combining new MOSFIRE infrared data with previous HST/WFC3 infrared spectra (from the 3D-HST survey) and multiwavelength photometry. We demonstrate that a high [OII…
We determine the intrinsic shapes and orientations of 27,450 type I and II active galactic nucleus (AGN) galaxies in the spectroscopic sample of the SDSS DR7, by studying the distribution of projected axis ratios of AGN hosts. Our aim is to study possible alignments between the AGN and host galaxy systems (e.g. the accretion disc and the galaxy angular momentum) and the effect of dust obscuration geometry on the AGN type. We define control samples of non-AGN galaxies that mimic the morphology, colour, luminosity and concentration distributions of the AGN population, taking into account the eff…
We investigate the optical morphologies of candidate active galaxies identified at radio, X-ray, and mid-infrared wavelengths. We use the Advanced Camera for Surveys General Catalog (ACS-GC) to identify 372, 1360, and 1238 AGN host galaxies from the VLA, XMM-Newton and Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the COSMOS field, respectively. We investigate both quantitative (GALFIT) and qualitative (visual) morphologies of these AGN host galaxies, split by brightness in their selection band. We find that the radio-selected AGN are most distinct, with a very low incidence of having unresolved opt…
The next generation of spectroscopic surveys will target emission-line galaxies (ELGs) to produce constraints on cosmological parameters. We study the large scale structure traced by ELGs using a combination of a semi-analytical model of galaxy formation, a code that computes the nebular emission from HII regions using the properties of the interstellar medium, and a large-volume, high-resolution N-body simulation. We consider fixed number density samples where galaxies are selected by either their H$α$, [OIII]$λ5007$ or [OII]$λλ3727-3729$ emission line luminosities. We investigate the assembl…
We use Chandra data to study the incidence and properties of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in 16 intermediate redshift ($0.5 < z < 1.1$) X-ray-selected galaxy groups in the Chandra Deep Field-South. We measure an AGN fraction of $f(L_{X,H} > 10^{42}; M_R<-20) = 8.0_{-2.3}^{+3.0}\%$ at $\bar{z} \sim 0.74$, approximately a factor of two higher than the AGN fraction found for rich clusters at comparable redshift. This extends the trend found at low redshift for groups to have higher AGN fractions than clusters. Our estimate of the AGN fraction is also more than a factor of 3 higher than that of lo…
