This paper studies the delay constrained multicast capacity of large scale mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). We consider a MANET consists of $n_s$ multicast sessions. Each multicast session has one source and $p$ destinations. The wireless mobiles move according to a two-dimensional i.i.d. mobility model. Each source sends identical information to the $p$ destinations in its multicast session, and the information is required to be delivered to all the $p$ destinations within $D$ time-slots. Given the delay constraint $D,$ we first prove that the capacity per multicast session is $O(\min\{1, (\log p)(\log (n_sp)) \sqrt{\frac{D}{n_s}}\}).$ Given non-negative functions $f(n)$ and $g(n)$: $f(n)=O(g(n))$ means there exist positive constants $c$ and $m$ such that $f(n) \leq cg(n)$ for all $ n\geq m;$ $f(n)=Ω(g(n))$ means there exist positive constants $c$ and $m$ such that $f(n)\geq cg(n)$ for all $n\geq m;$ $f(n)=Θ(g(n))$ means that both $f(n)=Ω(g(n))$ and $f(n)=O(g(n))$ hold; $f(n)=o(g(n))$ means that $\lim_{n\to \infty} f(n)/g(n)=0;$ and $f(n)=ω(g(n))$ means that $\lim_{n\to \infty} g(n)/f(n)=0.$ We then propose a joint coding/scheduling algorithm achieving a throughput of $Θ(\min\{1,\sqrt{\frac{D}{n_s}}\}).$ Our simulations show that the joint coding/scheduling algorithm achieves a throughput of the same order ($Θ(\min\{1, \sqrt{\frac{D}{n_s}}\})$) under random walk model and random waypoint model.

There are so many issues and solutions which witness the need of energy management and security in ad hoc wireless networks. The objective of a multicast routing protocol for MANETs is to support the propagation of data from a sender to all the receivers of a multicast group while trying to use the available bandwidth efficiently in the presence of frequent topology changes. Multicasting can improve the efficienc…
For stationary wireless ad hoc networks, one of the key challenging issues in routing and multicasting is to conserve as much energy as possible without compromising path efficiency measured as end-to-end delay. In this paper, we address the problem of path efficient and energy aware multicasting in static wireless ad hoc networks. We propose a novel distributed scalable algorithm for finding a virtual multicast backbone (VMB). Based on this VMB, we have further developed a multicasting scheme that jointly improves path efficiency and energy conservation. By exploiting inherent broadcast advan…
Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) is a type of mobile ad hoc network (MANET) that facilitates communication among vehicles. VANET provides inter-vehicular communications to serve for the application like road traffic safety and traffic efficiency. Infotainment service has been an anticipating trend in VANETs, and video streaming has a high potential in VANET. Although, this emerging technology is trending, there are still some issues like QoS provisions, decentralized medium access control, node coverage area, and finding and maintaining routes due to highly dynamic topology. These issues make …
Multicasting is effective when its group members are sparse and the speed is low. On the other hand, broadcasting is effective when the group members dense and the speed are high. Since mobile ad hoc networks are highly dynamic in nature, either of the above two strategies can be adopted at different scenarios. In this paper, we propose an ant agent based adaptive, multicast protocol that exploits group members desire to simplify multicast routing and invoke broadcast operations in appropriate localized regimes. By reducing the number of group members that participate in the construction of th…

Adhoc networks are characterized by connectivity through a collection of wireless nodes and fast changing network topology. Wireless nodes are free to move independent of each other which makes routing much difficult. This calls for the need of an efficient dynamic routing protocol. Mesh-based multicast routing technique establishes communications between mobile nodes of wireless adhoc networks in a faster and efficient way. In this article the performance of prominent on-demand routing protocols for mobile adhoc networks such as ODMRP (On Demand Multicast Routing Protocol), AODV (Adhoc on Dem…
The high-level contribution of this paper is to establish benchmarks for the minimum hop count per source-receiver path and the minimum number of edges per tree for multicast routing in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) under different mobility models. In this pursuit, we explore the tradeoffs between these two routing strategies with respect to hop count, number of edges and lifetime per multicast tree with respect to the Random Waypoint, City Section and Manhattan mobility models. We employ the Breadth First Search algorithm and the Minimum Steiner Tree heuristic for determining a sequence of …
IP mobility addresses the problem of changing the network point-of-attachment transparently during movement. Mobile IP is the proposed standard by IETF. Several studies, however, have shown that Mobile IP has several drawbacks, such as triangle routing and poor handoff performance. Multicast-based mobility has been proposed as a promising solution to the above problems, incurring less end-to-end delays and fast smooth handoff. Nonetheless, such architecture suffers from multicast state scalability problems with the growth in number of mobile nodes. This architecture also requires ubiquitous mu…
Multicast communication plays a crucial role in Mobile Adhoc Networks (MANETs). MANETs provide low cost, self configuring devices for multimedia data communication in military battlefield scenarios, disaster and public safety networks (PSN). Multicast communication improves the network performance in terms of bandwidth consumption, battery power and routing overhead as compared to unicast for same volume of data communication. In recent past, a number of multicast routing protocols (MRPs) have been proposed that tried to resolve issues and challenges in MRP. Multicast based group communication…
Multicast plays an important role in implementing the group communications in bandwidth scarce multihop mobile ad hoc networks. However, due to the dynamic topology of MANETs it is very difficult to build optimal multicast trees and maintaining group membership, making even more challenging to implement scalable and robust multicast in Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANET). A scalable and energy efficient location aware multicast algorithm, called SEELAMP, for mobile ad hoc networks is presented in the paper that is based on creation of shared tree using the physical location of the nodes for the mul…
The advent of ubiquitous computing and the proliferation of portable computing devices have raised the importance of mobile ad-hoc network. A major challenge lies in adapting multicast communication into such environments where mobility and link failures are inevitable. The purpose of this paper is to study impact of mobility models in performance of multicast routing protocols in MANET. In this work, three widely used mobility models such as Random Way Point, Reference Point Group and Manhattan mobility models and three popular multicast routing protocols such as On-Demand Multicast Routing P…
On account of the progress of network multimedia technology, more and more real-time multimedia applications arrive with the need to transmit information using multicast communication. These applications are more important with the arrival of mobile IPv6 protocol through mobile receivers and sources. These applications require a multicast routing protocol which has packets arriving at multicast receptors within a specified QoS guaranteed and a quick recovery mechanism. When multicasting with mobile IPv6, the mobility of a receivers and senders may lead to serious problems. When the receiver or…

This paper briefly introduces current approaches for seamless multicast extensions to Mobile IPv6. Key issues of multicast mobility are discussed. Both analytically and in simulations comparisons are drawn between handover performan…
Multicast routing is considered as one of the most important process in Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) to enable video sharing and data dissemination. Multicast routing can be used without any difficulties if a medium can be accessed by any transmitter at any given time. Unfortunately, challenges such as the unexpected behavior of primary users (PUs) and their access priority as well as network heterogeneity may appear in cognitive radio networks (CRNs). In this thesis, we propose a multi-layer multicast routing protocol for multi-hop mobile Ad Hoc CRN based on the concept of the minimum span…
With the emergence of 3D mobile devices available in the markets, mobile 3D video services become increasingly important for video service providers, such as Youtube and Netflix, while multi-view 3D videos are potential to bring out varied innovative applications. However, enabling multi-view 3D video services may overwhelm WiFi networks when we multicast every view of a video. In this paper, therefore, we propose to incorporate depth-image-based rendering (DIBR), which allows each mobile client to synthesize the desired view from nearby left and right views, to effectively reduce the bandwidt…
With the introduction of a newer generation of wireless devices and technologies, the need for an efficient architecture for IP mobility is becoming more apparent. Several architectures have been proposed to support IP mobility. Most studies, however, show that current architectures, in general, fall short from satisfying the performance requirements for wireless applications, mainly audio. Other studies have shown performance improvement by using multicast to reduce latency and packet loss during handoff. In this study, we propose a multicast-based architecture to support IP mobility. We eval…
A mobile ad hoc network (MANETs) is a self-organizing system of mobile nodes that communicate with each other via wireless links with no fixed infrastructure or centralized administration such as base station or access points. Nodes in a MANETs operate both as host as well as routers to forward packets for each other in a multihop fashion. For many applications in wireless networks, multicasting is an important and frequent communication service. By multicasting, since a single message can be delivered to multiple receivers simultaneously. It greatly reduces the transmission cost when sending …
One of the most important metrics in the design of IP mobility protocols is the handover performance. The current Mobile IP (MIP) standard has been shown to exhibit poor handover performance. Most other work attempts to modify MIP to slightly improve its efficiency, while others propose complex techniques to replace MIP. Rather than taking these approaches, we instead propose a new architecture for providing efficient and smooth handover, while being able to co-exist and inter-operate with other technologies. Specifically, we propose an intra-domain multicast-based mobility architecture, where…

In mobile wireless communication network, caching data items at the mobile clients is important to reduce the data access delay. However, efficient cache invalidation strategies are used to ensure the consistency between the data in the cache of mobile clients and at the database server. Servers use invalidation reports (IRs) to inform the mobile clients about data item updates. This paper proposes and implements a multicast based strategy to maintain cache consistency in mobile environment using AVI as the cache invalidation scheme. The proposed algorithm is outlined as follows - To resolve a…
With the exponential growth of mobile data, there are increasing interests to deploy small cells in millimeter wave (mmWave) bands to underlay the conventional homogeneous macrocell network as well as in exploiting device-to-device (D2D) communications to improve the efficiency of the multicast service that supports content-based mobile applications. To compensate for high propagation loss in the mmWave band, high-gain directional antennas have to be employed, while it is critical to optimize multicast service in order to improve the network performance. In this paper, an efficient multicast s…
Designing energy-efficient all-to-all multicasting protocols is of of great importance for multi-hop wireless networks such as wireless sensor networks and wireless ad hoc networks. In an all-to-all multicast session, there exists a set of wireless destination nodes, and each destination node needs to send some data packets to all other destination nodes. We consider the problem of building a shared multicast tree spanning the destination nodes such that the total energy consumption of realizing an all-to-all multicast session using the shared multicast tree is minimized. Since building such a…
With the explosive growth of mobile services, non-orthogonal broadcast/multicast transmissions can effectively improves spectrum efficiency. Nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) represents a paradigm shift from conventional orthogonal multiple-access (OMA) concepts and has been recognized as one of the key enabling technologies for fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks. In this paper, a two-tier heterogeneous network is studied, in which the wireless signal power is partitioned by the NOMA scheme. Moreover, the coverage probability, the average rate and the average QoE are derived to evaluate …

In this paper we present matrix game-theoretic models for joint routing, network coding, and scheduling problem. First routing and network coding are modeled by using a new approach based on compressed topology matrix that takes into account the inherent multicast gain of the network. The scheduling is optimized by a new approach called network graph soft coloring. Soft graph coloring is designed by switching between different components of a wireless network graph, which we refer to as graph fractals, with appropriate usage rates. The network components, represented by graph fractals, are a n…
A new era is dawning for wireless mobile ad hoc networks where communication will be done using a group of mobile devices called cluster, hence clustered network. This paper focuses on Cluster-Based Routing Protocol and Dynamic Source Routing. The results presented in this paper illustrates the implementation of Ad-hoc On-Demand Distance Vector routing protocol for enhancing mobile nodes performance and lifetime in a cl…
This paper presents a new approach in the management of mobile ad hoc networks. Our alternative, based on mobile agent technology, allows the design of mobile centralized server in ad hoc network, where it is not obvious to think about a centralized management, due to the absence of any administration or fixed infrastructure in these networks. The aim of this centralized approach is to provide permanent availability of services in ad hoc networks which are characterized by a distributed management. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, we apply it to solve the problem …
Significant effort has been invested recently to accelerate handover operations in a next generation mobile Internet. Corresponding works for developing efficient mobile multicast management are emergent. Both problems simultaneously expose routing complexity between subsequent points of attachment as a characteristic parameter for handover performance in access networks. As continuous mobility handovers necessarily occur between access routers located in geographic vicinity, this paper investigates on the hypothesis that geographically adjacent edge networks attain a reduced network distances…
In this paper we study mobile ad hoc wireless networks using the notion of evolving connectivity graphs. In such systems, the connectivity changes over time due to the intermittent contacts of mobile terminals. In particular, we are interested in studying the expected flooding time when full connectivity cannot be ensured at each point in time. Even in this case, due to finite contact times durations, connected components may appear in the connectivity graph. Hence, this represents the intermediate case between extreme cases of fully mobile ad hoc networks and fully static ad hoc networks. By …
Network capacity region is an important character of mobile ad hoc networks. Using cell-partitioned model, an expression of upper bound of delay-tolerant hybrid mobile ad hoc network is deduced regardless of coverage of base stations, types of mobile process, scheduling and routing algorithms. The limitation of the upper bound is derived, Analysis of the limitation of upper bound is carried out when the steady-state follows even-distribution law. The relationship among limitation of capacity, the node density and coverage of base station is analyzed.
Ad hoc network is a collection of wireless mobile nodes that dynamically form a temporary network without the use of any existing network infrastructure or centralized administration. A cognitive radio is a radio that can change its transmitter parameters based on interaction with the environment in which it operates. The basic idea of cognitive radio networks is that the unlicensed devices (cognitive radio users or secondary users) need to vacate the spectrum band once the licensed device (primary user) is detected. Cognitive capability and reconfigurability are the key characteristics of cog…
The deployment of small cells is expected to gain huge momentum in the near future, as a solution for managing the skyrocketing mobile data demand growth. Local caching of popular files at the small cell base stations has been recently proposed, aiming at reducing the traffic incurred when transferring the requested content from the core network to the users. In this paper, we propose and analyze a novel caching approach that can achieve significantly lower traffic compared to the traditional caching schemes. Maximizing network lifetime is a very challenging issue in routing protocol design for Mobile Ad-hoc NETworks (MANETs), since mobile nodes are powered by limited-capacity batteries. Furthermore, replacing or recharging batteries is often impossible in critical environments (e.g. battlefields, disaster areas, etc.) The proposed MEA-DSR (Multipath Energy-Aware on Demand Source Routing) protocol uses a load distribution policy in order to maximize network lifetime. The simulation results have shown the efficiency of the proposed protocol in comparison to DSR routing protocol in many difficult sce…
Using Mobile Ad Hoc Networks as a way to break the dependency of mobile communications on permanent infrastructure has been an active area of research for several years, but only more recently has consideration been given to the economics of a distributed mobile service. In particular, the topic of handling nodes that act selfishly or maliciously has not yet been explored in detail. In this paper, we discuss the SAVMAN strategy for mobile offloading under the rules of the 2013 MANIAC Challenge.
In this paper we propose a method to enhance the life time as well as improve the performance of the mobile ad hoc networks (MANET). Since MANET consists of devices that run on batteries, having limited amount of energy and due to the self-configuring and dynamic change of topology, all operations are performed by the node itself.
Many mobile ad hoc network protocols use simple flooding, in order to adapt to changes in time varying network topology. Most of the times, a network-wide flood results in redundant packets and increases network congestion, probability of packet collision, low utilization of available bandwidth, and most important, higher power consumption. In this paper, we propose a new cross-layer broadcast scheme to minimize broadcast traffic in mobile ad hoc networks. Our scheme is based on use of received signal strength indicator, RSSI, value to reduce the number of broadcast packets. The effectiveness …

Efficient message forwarding in mobile ad hoc network in disaster scenarios is challenging because location information on the boundary and interior nodes is often unavailable. Information related to boundary nodes can be used to design efficient routing protocols as well as to prolong the battery power of devices along the boundary of an ad hoc network. In this article, we developed an algorithm, CWBound, which discovers boundary nodes in a complex non-convex mobile ad hoc (CNCAH) networks. Experiments show that the CWBound algorithm is at least three times faster than other state-of-the-art …

Energy consumption is the most challenging issue in routing protocol design for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs), since mobile nodes are battery powered. Furthermore, replacing or recharging batteries is often impossible in critical environments such as in military or rescue missions. In a MANET, the energy depletion of a node does not affect the node itself only, but the overall network lifetime. In this paper, we present multipath and energy-aware on demand source routing (MEA-DSR) protocol, which exploits route diversity and information about batteries-energy levels for balancing energy cons…

The mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a wireless network based on a group of mobile nodes without any centralised infrastructure. In civilian data communication, all nodes cannot be homogeneous-type and not do a specific data communication. Therefore, node co-operation and cheat-proof are essential characteristics for successfully running MANETs in civilian data communication. Denial of service and malicious behaviour of the node are the main concerns in securing successful communication in MANETs. This scheme proposed a generic solution to preventing malicious behaviour of the node by the clus…
Cooperative caching is a technique used in mobile ad hoc networks to improve the efficiency of information access by reducing the access latency and bandwidth usage. Cache replacement policy plays a significant role in response time reduction by selecting suitable subset of items for eviction from the cache. In this paper we have made a review of the existing cache replacement algorithms proposed for cooperative caching in ad hoc networks. We made an attempt to classify existing replacement policies for ad hoc networks based on the replacement decision taken. In addition, this paper suggests s…
In this paper, we propose an ad-hoc on-demand distance vector routing algorithm for mobile ad-hoc networks taking into account node mobility. Changeable topology of such mobile ad-hoc networks provokes overhead messages in order to search available routes and maintain found routes. The overhead messages impede data delivery from sources to destination and deteriorate network performance. To overcome such a challenge, our proposed algorithm estimates link duration based neighboring node mobility and chooses the most reliable route. The proposed algorithm also applies the estimate for route main…

MANET has successfully been implemented in the emergency communication, battlefield and Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET) etc. Recently, MANET has also been studied to establish village level off-the-grid telephony system using mobile phones (smartphones). As the mobile phones and other modern electronic devices are increasingly equipped with efficient wireless Wi-Fi devices, phone based MANET implementati…
We present comparative analysis of MANET (Mobile Ad-Hoc Network) and VANET (Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network) routing protocols, in this paper. The analysis is based on various design factors. The traditional routing protocols of AODV (Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector), DSR (Dynamic Source Routing), and DSDV (Destination-Sequenced Distance-Vector) of MANET are utilizing node centric routing which leads to frequent breaking of routes, causing instability in routing. Usage of these protocols in high mobility environment like VANET may eventually cause many packets to drop. Route repairs and failures not…

Security remains as a major concern in the mobile ad hoc networks. This paper presents a new protocol SD-AODV, which is an extension of the exiting protocol AODV. The proposed protocol is made secure and dynamic against three main types of routing attacks- wormhole attack, byzantine attack and blackhole attack. SD-AODV protocol was evaluated through simulation experiments done on Glomosim and performance of the network was measured in terms of packet delivery fraction, average end-to-end delay, global throughput and route errors of a mobile ad hoc network where a defined percentage of nodes be…
Force-directed algorithms such as the Kamada-Kawai algorithm have shown promising results for solving the boundary detection problem in a mobile ad hoc network. However, the classical Kamada-Kawai algorithm does not scale well when it is used in networks with large numbers of nodes. It also produces poor results in non-convex networks. To address these problems, this paper proposes an improved version of the Kamada-Kawai algorithm. The proposed extension includes novel heuristics and algorithms that achieve a faster energy level reduction. Our experimental results show that the improved algori…

It is based on the link state algorithm and employs periodic exchange of messages to maintain topology information of the networks. In the mean time, it updates the routing table in an on-demand scheme and forwards the packets in multiple paths which have been deter…
Routing in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) presents a big challenge, especially when support for a large number of nodes is needed. This paper extends the local visibility concept of the recent DHT-based URBAN_XOR routing protocol, which aims to reduce routing table sizes while keeping efficiency high. Our main contribution is providing a guarantee that if any two nodes are connected through other nodes, they are able to communicate with each other. We propose a new route acquisition method that aims to reduce the total amount of overhead traffic and improve convergence rate. In addition, we i…
In mobile adhoc networks, congestion occurs with limited resources. The standard TCP congestion control mechanism is not able to handle the special properties of a shared wireless channel. TCP congestion control works very well on the Internet. But mobile adhoc networks exhibit some unique properties that greatly affect the design of appropriate protocols and protocol stacks in general, and of congestion control mechanism in particular. As it turned out, the vastly differing environment in a mobile adhoc network is highly problematic for standard TCP. Many approaches have been proposed to over…
Designing a wireless node that supports quality of service (QoS) in a mobile ad hoc network is a challenging task. In this paper, we propose an architecture of a wireless node that may be used to form a mobile ad hoc network that supports QoS. We discuss the core functionalities required for such a node and how those functionalities can be incorporated. A feature of our architecture is that the node has the ability to utilize multiple paths, if available, for the provision of QoS. However, in the absence of multiple paths it can utilize the resources provided by a single path between the sourc…
