We report the first measurement of high order cumulants of the current fluctuations in an avalanche diode run through by a stationary dc current. Such a system is archetypic of devices in which transport is governed by a collective mechanism, here charge multiplication by avalanche. We have measured the first 5 cumulants of the probability distribution of the current fluctuations. We show that the charge multiplication factor is distributed according to a power law that is different from that of the usual avalanche below breakdown, when avalanches are well separated.

We study the avalanche statistics observed in a minimal random growth model. The growth is governed by a reproduction rate obeying a probability distribution with finite mean a and variance va. These two control parameters determine if the avalanche size tends to a stationary distribution, (Finite Scale statistics with finite mean and variance or Power-Law tailed statistics with exponent in (1, 3]), or instead to a non-stationary regime with Log-Normal statistics. Numerical results and their statistical analysis are presented for a uniformly distributed growth rate, which are corroborated and …
Avalanche statistics of various threshold activated dynamical systems are known to depend on the magnitude of the drive, or stress, on the system. Such dependencies exist for earthquake size distributions, in sheared granular avalanches, laboratory scale fracture and also in the outage statistics of power grids. In this work we model threshold-activated avalanche dynamics and investigate the time required to detect local variations in the ability of model elements to bear stress. We show that the detection time follows a scaling law where the scaling exponents depend on whether the feature tha…
By means of a finite elements technique we solve numerically the dynamics of an amorphous solid under deformation in the quasistatic driving limit. We study the noise statistics of the stress-strain signal in the steady state plastic flow, focusing on systems with low internal dissipation. We analyze the distributions of avalanche sizes and durations and the density of shear transformations when varying the damping strength. In contrast to avalanches in the overdamped case, dominated by the yielding point universal exponents, inertial avalanches are controlled by a non-universal damping depend…
Disordered elastic interfaces display avalanche dynamics at the depinning transition. For short-range interactions, avalanches correspond to compact reorganizations of the interface well described by the depinning theory. For long-range elasticity, an avalanche is a collection of spatially disconnected clusters. In this paper we determine the scaling properties of the clusters and relate them to the roughness exponent of the interface. The key observation of our analysis is the identification of a Bienaym{é}-Galton-Watson process describing the statistics of the cluster number. Our work has a …
In many situations we are interested in the propagation of energy in some portions of a three dimensional system with dilute long-range links. In this paper sandpile model is defined on the three-dimensional small world network with real dissipative boundaries and the energy propagation is studied in three-dimensions as well as the two-dimensional cross sections. Two types of cross section are defined in the system, one in the bulk and another in the system boundary. The motivation of this is to make clear how the statistics of the avalanches in the bulk cross section tend to the statistics of…
The hypothesis of critical failure relates the presence of an ultimate stability point in the structural constitutive equation of materials to a divergence of characteristic scales in the microscopic dynamics responsible for deformation. Avalanche models involving critical failure have determined common universality classes for stick-slip processes and fracture. However, not all empirical failure processes exhibit the trademarks of criticality. The rheological properties of materials introduce dissipation, usually reproduced in conceptual models as a hardening of the coarse grained elements of…
Several years ago, in the context of the physics of hysteresis in magnetic materials, a simple stochastic model has been introduced: the ABBM model. Later, the ABBM model has been advocated as a paradigm for a broad class of diverse phenomena, baptised "crackling noise phenomena". The model reproduces many statistical features of such intermittent signals, as the statistics of burst (or avalanche) durations and sizes, with their power law exponents that would characterise the dynamics as critical. Beyond such "critical exponents", the measure of the average shape of the avalanche has also been…
We present the experimental and numerical studies of a 2D sheared amorphous material constituted of bidisperse photo-elastic disks. We analyze the statistics of avalanches during shear including the local and global fluctuations in energy and changes in particle positions and orientations. We find scale free distributions for these global and local avalanches denoted by power-laws whose cut-offs vary with inter-particle friction and packing fraction. Different exponents are found for these power-laws depending on the quantity from which variations are extracted. An asymmetry in time of the ava…
