Spatial phase inhomogeneity at the nano- to microscale is widely observed in strongly-correlated electron materials. The underlying mechanism and possibility of artificially controlling the phase inhomogeneity are still open questions of critical importance for both the phase transition physics and device applications. Lattice strain has been shown to cause the coexistence of metallic and insulating phases in the Mott insulator VO2. By continuously tuning strain over a wide range in single-crystal VO2 micro- and nanobeams, here we demonstrate the nucleation and manipulation of one-dimensionally ordered metal-insulator domain arrays along the beams. Mott transition is achieved in these beams at room temperature by active control of strain. The ability to engineer phase inhomogeneity with strain lends insight into correlated electron materials in general, and opens opportunities for designing and controlling the phase inhomogeneity of correlated electron materials for micro- and nanoscale device applications.
Motivated by the possibility of a strain tuning effect on electronic properties of graphene, the semimetal-Mott insulator transition process on the uniaxial honeycomb lattice is numerically studied using Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo. As our simulations are based on the half-filled repulsive Hubbard model, the system is sign problem free. Herein, the temperature-dependent DC conductivity is used to characterize electronic transport properties. The data suggest that metallic is suppressed in the presence of strain. More interestingly, within the finite-size scaling study, a novel antiferromag…
Metamagnetism in antiferromagnets exhibits distinct critical behaviors and dynamics when invoking spin reversal and rotation. Here we show a 0.05% anisotropic strain suffices to in-situ modulate the metamagnetic critical field of the Mott insulator Sr2IrO4 by over 50%, enabling electrical switching of the transition. Resonant x-ray scattering and model simulation reveal that the transition is completely tuned from the spin-flop to spin-flip type as the strain introduces C4-symmetry-breaking magnetic anisotropy. Simultaneous transport study indicates the metamagnetic responses are reflected in …
VO2 is a strongly correlated material, which undergoes a reversible metal insulator transition (MIT) coupled to a structural phase transition upon heating (T= 67° C). Since its discovery the nature of the insulating state has long been debated and different solid-state mechanisms have been proposed to explain its nature: Mott-Hubbard correlation, Peierls distortion or a combination of both. Moreover, still now there is a lack of consensus on the interplay between the different degrees of freedom: charge, lattice, orbital and how they contribute to the MIT. In this manuscript we will investigat…
We report the evolution of the $k$-space electronic structure of lightly doped bulk Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ with uniaxial strain. Using ultrathin plate-like crystals, we achieve strain levels up to $-4.1\%$, sufficient to suppress the Mott phase and access the previously unexplored metallic state at low temperature. Angle-resolved photoemission experiments performed while tuning the uniaxial strain reveal that metallicity emerges from a marked redistribution of charge within the Ru $t_{2g}$ shell, accompanied by a sudden collapse of the spectral weight in the lower Hubbard band and the emergence of …
We report here a discovery of electrically driven insulator to metal transition (IMT) and concomitant isostructural volume expansion in the layered cobaltates which otherwise do not exhibit temperature dependent IMT. These findings are demonstrated at macroscopic, microscopic and atomic scales. With application of voltage growth of metallic regions have been observed in the 2D layered La2-xSrxCoO4. Growth of metallic regions is associated with volume increase (strain as high as 0.3%). Non thermal IMT and electro-strain are proposed to be caused by electro-proliferation of the Co3+ high spin st…
Recent experiments on Kondo insulator SmB6 have revealed bulk excitations that could be Fermions without charge. This would lead to a residual linear term in the thermal conductivity that was not observed universally in experiments. To solve this mystery, we introduce a novel symmetric geometry for performing thermal transport measurements under strains. Magnetic-field-independent residual linear terms were found in flux-grown SmB6 at nominal zero strain, and they grew under a tensile strain, which is known to modify Sm valence. A small growth-dependent difference in the Sm valence might expla…
Metal-to-insulator phase transitions in complex oxide thin films are exciting phenomena which may be useful for device applications, but in many cases the physical mechanism responsible for the transition is not fully understood. Here we demonstrate that epitaxial strain generates local disproportionation of the NiO6 octahedra, driven through changes in the oxygen stoichiometry, and that this directly modifies the metal-to-insulator phase transition in epitaxial (001) NdNiO3 thin films. Theoretically, we predict that the Ni-O-Ni bond angle decreases, while octahedral tilt and local disproporti…
Strain engineering is a powerful technology which exploits stationary external or internal stress of specific spatial distribution for controlling the fundamental properties of condensed materials and nanostructures. This advanced technique modulates in space the carrier density and mobility, the optical absorption and, in strongly correlated systems, the phase, e.g. insulator/metal or ferromagnetic/paramagnetic. However, while successfully accessing nanometer length scale, strain engineering is yet to be brought down to ultrafast time scales allowing strain-assisted control of state of matter…
We report the numerical investigation of strain induced superconductor-insulator quantum phase transition on a Lieb lattice. Based on a non perturbative Monte Carlo technique, we show that in two dimensions an s-wave superconductor undergoes transition to a highly correlated bosonic insulator under the influence of strain, applied as staggered hopping amplitudes. We further demonstrate a strain induced BCS-BEC like crossover in the superconducting state, such that the superconductor-insulator transition takes place between a bosonic superconductor and a bosonic insulator. Our results suggest t…
Using density-functional theory (DFT) and its extension to DFT+$U$, we propose a possible scenario for a strain-induced metal-insulator transition which has been reported recently in thin films of SrCrO$_3$. The metal-insulator transition involves the emergence of a Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion similar to the case of the related rare-earth vanadates, which also exhibit a nominal $d^2$ occupation of the transition metal cation. Our calculations indicate that, for realistic values of the Hubbard $U$ parameter, the unstrained system exhibts a C-type antiferromagnetically ordered ground state, that…
Rewritable nanoelectronics offers new perspectives and potential to both fundamental research and technological applications. Such interest has driven the research focus into conducting domain walls: pseudo 2D conducting channels that can be created, positioned, and deleted in situ. However, the study of conductive domain walls is largely limited to wide-gap ferroelectrics, where the conductivity typically arises from changes in charge carrier density, due to screening charge accumulation at polar discontinuities. This work shows that, in narrow-gap correlated insulators with strong charge lat…
We use density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory to demonstrate the emergence of a metallic layer at the interface between the two Mott insulators LaTiO$_3$ and LaVO$_3$. The metallic layer is due to charge transfer across the interface, which alters the valence state of the transition metal cations close to the interface. Somewhat counter-intuitively, the charge is transferred from the Ti cations with formal $d^1$ electron configuration to the the V cations with formal $d^2$ configuration, thereby increasing the occupation difference of the $t_{2g}$ states. This can be unders…
We present a comprehensive study of strain-induced topological magnon phase transitions in insulating three-dimensional (3D) topological chiral antiferromagnets on the kagome-lattice. We show that by applying (100) uniaxial strain, 3D insulating antiferromagnetic Weyl magnons (WMs) manifest as an intermediate phase between a strain-induced 3D magnon Chern insulator (MCI) with integer Chern numbers and a 3D trivial magnon insulator with zero Chern number. In addition, we show that strain suppresses the topological thermal Hall conductivity of magnons in these systems. Due to the similarity betw…
LiOsO3 is the first experimentally confirmed polar metal. Previous works suggested that the ground state of LiOsO$_3$ is just close to the critical point of metal-insulator transition. In this work the electronic state of LiOsO$_3$ is tuned by epitaxial biaxial strain, which undergoes the Slater-type metal-insulator transition under tensile strain, i.e., the G-type antiferromagnetism emerges. The underlying mechanism of bandwidth tuning can be extended to its sister compound NaOsO$_3$, which shows an opposite transition from a antiferromagnetic insulator to a nonmagnetic metal under hydrostati…
Symmetry analysis of strain, electric and magnetic fields in the $\text{Bi}_2\text{Se}_3$-class of topological insulators
Transition metal oxides possess complex free energy surfaces with competing degrees of freedom. Photoexcitation allows shaping of such rich energy landscapes. In epitaxially strained $\mathrm{La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3}$, optical excitation with a sub-100 fs pulse above $2\ \mathrm{mJ/cm^2}$ leads to a persistent metallic phase below 100 K. Using single-shot optical and terahertz spectroscopy, we show that this phase transition is a multi-step process. We conclude that the phase transition is driven by partial charge order melting, followed by growth of the persistent metallic phase on longer tim…
We employ the Hartree-Fock approximation to identify the magnetic ground state of the Hubbard model on a frustrated square lattice. We investigate the phase diagram as a function of the Coulomb repulsion's strength $U$, and the ratio $t'/t$ between the nearest and next nearest neighbor hoppings $t$ and $t'$. At half-filling and for a sufficiently large $U$, an antiferromagnetic chiral spin density wave order with nonzero spin chirality emerges as the ground state in a wide regime of the phase diagram near $t'/t=1/\sqrt{2}$, where the Fermi surface is well-nested for both $(π,π)$ and $(π,0)/(0,…
Recent experiments have discovered multipolar orders in a variety of $d$-orbital Mott insulators. Motivated by uncovering the exchange interactions which underlie octupolar order proposed in the osmate double perovskites, we study a two-site model using exact diagonalization on a five-orbital Hamiltonian, incorporating spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and interactions, and including both intra-orbital and inter-orbital hopping. Using an exact Schrieffer-Wolff transformation, we then extract an effective pseudospin Hamiltonian for the non-Kramers doublets, uncovering dominant ferrooctupolar coupling d…
We investigate the effect of uniaxial heterostrain on the interacting phase diagram of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene. Using both self-consistent Hartree-Fock and density-matrix renormalization group calculations, we find that small strain values ($ε\sim 0.1 - 0.2 \%$) drive a zero-temperature phase transition between the symmetry-broken Kramers intervalley-coherent insulator and a nematic semi-metal. The critical strain lies within the range of experimentally observed strain values, and we therefore predict that strain is at least partly responsible for the sample-dependent experimental…
The complex phase diagram of manganites with simultaneously active spin, charge, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom continues providing surprises. In a recent groundbreaking experiment, membranes of the perovskite manganite La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO) deposited on a flexible polymer layer were strained up to 8\% [S.~S. Hong {\it et al.}, Science {\bf 368}, 71 (2020)], much more than achieved by regular strain induced by a rigid substrate. By increasing this strain a metal-insulator transition was reported. Here we reproduce the results of the experiments using Monte Carlo simulatio…
Tuning the electronic properties of a matter is of fundamental interest in scientific research as well as in applications. Recently, the Mott insulator-metal transition has been reported in a pristine layered transition metal dichalcogenides 1T-TaS$_2$, with the transition triggered by an optical excitation, a gate controlled intercalation, or a voltage pulse. However, the sudden insulator-metal transition hinders an exploration of how the transition evolves. Here, we report the strain as a possible new tuning parameter to induce Mott gap collapse in 1T-TaS$_2$. In a strain-rich area, we find …
The pressure-induced insulator to metal transition (IMT) of layered magnetic nickel phosphorous tri-sulfide NiPS3 was studied in-situ under quasi-uniaxial conditions by means of electrical resistance (R) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. This sluggish transition is shown to occur at 35 GPa. Transport measurements show no evidence of superconductivity to the lowest measured temperature (~ 2 K). The structure results presented here differ from earlier in-situ work that subjected the sample to a different pressure state, suggesting that in NiPS3 the phase stability fields are highly depen…
Quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) phases in magnetic topological insulators are characterized by the scattering-free chiral edge currents protected by their nontrivial bulk band topology. To fully explore these intriguing phenomena and application of topological insulators, high temperature material realization of QAH phases is crucial. In this paper, based on extensive first-principles density functional theory calculations, we predict that perovskite bilayers (LaXO$_3$)$_{2}$ (X = Pd, Pt) imbedded in the (111) (LaXO$_3$)$_{2}$/(LaAlO$_3$)$_{10}$ superlattices are high Curie temperature ferromagne…
This paper reports that ~10-nm-thick FeSe thin films exhibit insulator-like behavior in terms of the temperature dependence of their electrical resistivity even though bulk FeSe has a metallic electronic structure that has been confirmed by photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. This apparent contradiction is explained by potential barriers formed in the conduction band. Very thin FeSe epitaxial films with various [Fe]/[Se] were fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy and classified into two groups with respect to lattice strain and electrical properties. Lattice parameter …
Mott transitions in real materials are first order and almost always associated with lattice distortions, both features promoting the emergence of nanotextured phases. This nanoscale self-organization creates spatially inhomogeneous regions, which can host and protect transient non-thermal electronic and lattice states triggered by light excitation. Here, we combine time-resolved X-ray microscopy with a Landau-Ginzburg functional approach for calculating the strain and electronic real-space configurations. We investigate V$_2$O$_3$, the archetypal Mott insulator in which nanoscale self-organiz…
