The concept of the Majorana fermion has been postulated more than eighty years ago; however, this elusive particle has never been observed in nature. The non-local character of the Majorana fermion can be useful for topological quantum computation. Recently, it has been shown that the 3He-B phase is a time-reversal invariant topological superfluid, with a single component of gapless Majorana fermion state localized on the surface. Such a Majorana surface state contains half the degrees of freedom of the single Dirac surface state recently observed in topological insulators. We show here that the Majorana surface state can be detected through an electron spin relaxation experiment. The Majorana nature of the surface state can be revealed though the striking angular dependence of the relaxation time on the magnetic field direction, $1/T_1 \propto sin^2 θ$ where $θ$ is the angle between the magnetic field and the surface normal. The temperature dependence of the spin relaxation rate can reveal the gapless linear dispersion of the Majorana surface state. We propose a spin relaxation experiment setup where we inject an electron inside a nano-sized bubble below the helium liquid surface.
We propose a scheme in semiconducting quantum nanowires structure to demonstrate the non-Abelian statistics for Majorana fermions in terms of braid group. The Majorana fermions are localized at the endpoints of semiconducting wires, which are deposited on an \emph{s}-wave superconductor. The non-Abelian nature of Majorana fermion is manifested by the fact that the output of the different applied orders of two operations, constructed by the braid group elements, are different. In particular, the difference can be unambiguously imprinted on the quantum states of a superconducting flux qubit.
Reading out the parity degree of freedom of Majorana bound states is key to demonstrating their nonabelian exchange properties. Here, we present a low-energy model describing localized edge states in a two-arm device. We study parity-to-charge conversion based on coupling the superconductor bound states to a quantum dot whose charge is read out by a sensor. The dynamics of the system, including the readout device, is analyzed in full using a quantum-jump approach. We show how the resulting signal and noise ratio differentiates between local Majorana and Andreev bound states.
We propose an experimental setup for detecting a Majorana zero mode consisting of a spinless quantum dot coupled to the end of a p-wave superconducting nanowire. The Majorana bound state at the end of the wire strongly influences the conductance through the quantum dot: Driving the wire through the topological phase transition causes a sharp jump in the conductance by a factor of 1/2. In the topological phase, the zero temperature peak value of the dot conductance (i.e. when the dot is on resonance and symmetrically coupled to the leads) is e^2/2h. In contrast, if the wire is in its trivial ph…
Nonlocal entanglement between two quantum dots can be generated through Majorana fermions. The two Majorana fermions at the ends of an one-dimensional topological superconductor form a nonlocal fermion level, coupling to the occupation states of two quantum dots put close to the two ends, and the entire system will come into an entangled state. After introducing a charging energy by a capacitor, entanglement of the entire system can manifest itself through the nonlocal entanglement between the two quantum dots. That is, when measuring the electron occupations of the quantum dots, the measureme…
Unequivocal signatures of Majorana zero energy modes in condensed matter systems and manipulation of the associated electron parity states are highly sought after for fundamental reasons as well as for the prospect of topological quantum computing. In this Letter, we demonstrate that a ring of Josephson coupled topological superconducting islands threaded by magnetic flux and attached to a quantum dot acts as an excellent parity-controlled probe of Majorana mode physics. As a function of flux threading through the ring, standard Josephson coupling yields a $Φ_0=h/(2 e)$ periodic features corre…
A pair of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) constitutes a nonlocal qubit whose entropy is $\log 2$. Upon strongly coupling one of the constituent MZMs to a reservoir with a continuous density of states, a universal entropy change of $\frac{1}{2}\log 2$ is expected to be observed across an intermediate temperature plateau. We adapt the entropy-measurement scheme that was the basis of a recent experiment [Hartman et. al., Nat. Phys. 14, 1083 (2018)] to the case of a proximitized topological system hosting MZMs, and propose a method to measure this $\frac{1}{2}\log 2$ entropy change --- an unambiguous s…
Zero energy Majorana fermion states (Majoranas) can arise at the ends of a semiconducting wire in proximity with a superconductor. A first generation of experiments has detected a zero bias conductance peak in these systems that strongly suggests these Majoranas do exist; however, a definitive demonstration of the long-ranged entanglement that is crucial for potential applications in quantum computing has yet to be carried out. This work discusses two possible measurement schemes to detect this long-ranged entanglement in a wire system with two coupled pairs of Majoranas, by varying the coupli…
We propose a setup to measure the lifetime of the parity of a pair of Majorana bound states. The proposed experiment has one edge Majorana state tunnel coupled to a quantum dot, which in turn is coupled to a metallic electrode. When the Majorana Fermions overlap, even a small relaxation rate qualitatively changes the non-linear transport spectrum, and for strong overlap the lifetime can be read off directly from the height of a current peak. This is important for the usage of Majorana Fermions as a platform for topological quantum computing, where the parity relaxation is a limiting factor.
To realize the braiding operations of Majorana zero mode in the vortex cores of a topological superconductor (TSC), a novel approach is proposed in this letter to replace the common tip (or tip-like) method. Instead of on top of the TSC thin film, arrays of electrically controllable pining centers are built beneath the film, hence detecting can proceed along with braiding. It does not only increase the braiding rate, but also enables the braiding to be performed in an electrically controllable way and to be integrated into large scale. Our work paves the way towards large-scale topological qua…
A new method is introduced for probing Topological Superconductors. The integration of the superconding fermions generates a topological $\mathbf{Chern-Simons}$ sound action . Dislocations induce Majorana zero modes inside the sample, resulting in a new Hamiltonian which couple the Majorana modes, the electron field and the non-Abelian strain field sound. This Hamiltonian is used to compute the anomalous sound absorption. The Topological superconductor absorbs sound below the superconducting gap due to the transition between the quasi particles and the Majorana fermions. The sound waves offers…
Topological superconductors are one of the most actively studied materials these days. They are a promising candidate for hosting Majorana fermions either on their boundaries or in vortex cores. Detecting 1D edge current around the periphery of a 2D $p_x + ip_y$ superconductor would be a hallmark signature of topological superconductivity, but Majorana fermions are not amenable to electronic current measurements due to their charge neutral nature. Thermal conductivity measurements, such as thermal Hall effect, are alternatively proposed, but material synthesis must come first. Superfluid $^3$H…
We propose to directly probe the chirality of Majorana edge states in 2D topological superconductors using polarization selective photon absorption. When shining circularly polarized light on a 2D topological superconductor in disk geometry, the photons can excite quasiparticles only when the polarization of the light matches the chirality of the Majorana edge states required by the angular momentum conservation. Hence one can obtain the chirality of the Majorana edge states by measuring the photon absorption rate. We show that the polarization selective photon absorption can also serve as a s…
The fractional Josephson effect has been observed in many instances as a signature of a topological superconducting state containing zero-energy Majorana modes. We present a nontopological scenario which can produce a fractional Josephson effect generically in semiconductor-based Josephson junctions, namely, a resonant impurity bound state weakly coupled to a highly transparent channel. We show that the fractional ac Josephson effect can be generated by the Landau-Zener processes which flip the electron occupancy of the impurity bound state. The Josephson effect signature for Majorana modes be…
Fractional Josephson effect is a unique character of Majorana Fermions in topological superconductor system. This effect is very difficult to detect experimentally because of the disturbance of quasiparticle poisoning and unwanted couplings in the superconductor. Here, we propose a scheme to probe fractional DC Josephson effect of semiconductor nanowire-based topological Josephson junction through 4π phase slip. By exploiting a topological RF SQUID system we find that the dominant contribution for Josephson coupling comes from the interaction of Majorana Fermions, resulting the resonant tunnel…
We consider Josephson junctions on surfaces of three dimensional topological insulator nanowires. We find that in the presence of a parallel magnetic field, short junctions on nanowires show signatures of a perfectly transmitted mode capable of supporting Majorana fermions. Such signatures appear in the current-phase relation in the presence or absence of the fermion parity anomaly, and are most striking when considering the critical current as a function of flux Φ, which exhibits a peak at Φ=h/2e. The peak sharpens in the presence of disorder at low but finite chemical potentials, and can be …
Through a systematic symmetry and topology analysis we establish that three-dimensional chiral superconductors with strong spin-orbit coupling and odd-parity pairing generically host low-energy nodal quasiparticles that are spin-non-degenerate and realize Majorana fermions in three dimensions. By examining all types of chiral Cooper pairs with total angular momentum $J$ formed by Bloch electrons with angular momentum $j$ in crystals, we obtain a comprehensive classification of gapless Majorana quasiparticles in terms of energy-momentum relation and location on the Fermi surface. We show that t…
Much of the current experimental efforts for detecting Majorana zero modes have been centered on probing the boundary of quantum wires with strong spin-orbit coupling. The same type of Majorana zero mode can also be realized at crystalline dislocations in 2D superconductors with the nontrivial weak topological indices. Unlike at an Abrikosov vortex, at such a dislocation, there are no other low-lying midgap states than the Majorana zero mode so that it avoids usual complications encountered in experimental detections such as scanning tunneling microscope (STM) measurements. We will show that, …
We propose and analyze theoretically an experimental setup for detecting the elusive Majorana particle in semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures. The experimental system consists of one-dimensional semiconductor wire with strong spin-orbit Rashba interaction embedded into a superconducting quantum interference device. We show that the energy spectra of the Andreev bound states at the junction are qualitatively different in topologically trivial (i.e., not containing any Majorana) and nontrivial phases having an even and odd number of crossings at zero energy, respectively. The measureme…
We develop a theory based on the formalism of quasiclassical Green's functions to study the spin dynamics in superfluid $^3$He. First, we derive kinetic equations for the spin-dependent distribution function in the bulk superfluid reproducing the results obtained earlier without quasiclassical approximation. Then we consider a spin dynamics near the surface of fully gapped $^3$He-B phase taking into account spin relaxation due to the transitions in the spectrum of localized fermionic states. The lifetime of longitudinal and transverse spin waves is calculate taking into account the Fermi-liqui…
We investigate characteristic features in the spin response of doped three-dimensional topological insulators with odd-parity unequal-spin superconducting pairing, which are predicted to have gapless Majorana surface modes. These Majorana modes contribute to the local spin susceptibility, giving rise to a characteristic temperature behavior of the Knight shift and the spin-lattice relaxation time in magnetic resonance experiments. Because of their different decay lengths, the Majorana modes can be observed and clearly distinguished from the Dirac modes of the topological insulator by local pro…

Majorana mode based topological qubits are potentially subject to diabatic errors that in principle can limit the utility of topological quantum computation. Using a combination of analytical and numerical methods we study the diabatic errors in Majorana-based topological Y-junction that are coupled to a Bosonic bath in the Markovian approximation. From the study we find analytically that in the absence of a bath, the error rate can be made exponentially small in the braiding time only for completely smooth pulse shapes. Thus, pristine topological systems can reach exponentially small errors e…
It is difficult to unambiguously confirm the existence of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) due to the absence of smoking-gun signatures in charge transport measurements. Recent studies suggest that the spin degree of freedom of MZMs may provide an alternative detection method. We study the spin properties of the superconducting state in Majorana nanowires and the associated unconventional Josephson effect with realistic experimental parameters taken from [Zhang {\it et al.}, Nature 556, 74 (2018)]. For a superconducting thin film with in-plane polarized spin-triplet pairing, an out-of-plane electric…
With the discovery of Majorana quasiparticles in semiconductor-superconductor hybrid structures, topologically protected qubits have emerged as a promising contender for quantum information processing. While the construction of a universal quantum computer with topological protection likely requires significant advances in materials science, intermediate-scale devices are nearly within the reach of current technology. As a near-term milestone for topological qubits, we propose a network of topological superconductors as a simulator of a large variety of quantum spin systems, including those wi…
Josephson radiation is a useful signature for detecting Majorana zero modes in topological superconductors. We study the Josephson radiation of the underdamped topological Josephson junction within the quantum resistively and capacitively shunted junction model. We show that the quantum dynamics of the Majorana two-level system induce oscillatory patterns in the Josephson emission spectra. With the Floquet method, we obtain analytical results for these oscillatory patterns and find that they are well described by Bessel functions. We perform numerical simulations to verify the analytical resul…
We theoretically consider transport properties of a normal metal (N)- superconducting semiconductor nanowire (S)-normal metal (N) structure (NSN) in the context of the possible existence of Majorana bound states in disordered semiconductor-superconductor hybrid systems in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting induced by an external magnetic field. We study in details the transport signatures of the topological quantum phase transition as well as the existence of the Majorana bound states in the electrical transport properties of the NSN structure. Our theory includes the rea…
We investigate the effect of helical Majorana fermions at the surface of superconducting topological insulators (STI) on the Josephson current by referring to possible pairing states of Cu-doped Bi2Se3. The surface state in the present STI has a spin helicity because the directions of spin and momentum are locked to each other. The Josephson current-phase relation in an STI/s-wave superconductor junction shows robust sin(2ϕ) owing to mirror symmetry, where ϕdenotes the macroscopic phase difference between the two superconductors. In contrast, the maximum Josephson current in an STI/STI junctio…
Inspired by a recent experimental observation of the zero-bias tunneling conductance in superconductor-semiconductor nanowire devices, we consider here transport properties of the junctions consisting of a nanowire (Luttinger liquid) coupled to a topological superconductor characterized by the presence of Majorana zero-energy end states. The presence of the Majorana modes leads to a quantization of the zero-bias tunneling conductance at zero temperature. In order to understand this phenomenon, we have developed a framework, based on real-time Keldysh technique, which allows one to compute tunn…
A topological superconductor is characterized by having a pairing gap in the bulk and gapless self-hermitian Majorana modes at its boundary. In one dimension, these are zero-energy modes bound to the ends, while in two dimensions these are chiral gapless modes traveling along the edge. Majorana modes have attracted a lot of interest due to their exotic properties, which include non-abelian exchange statistics. Progress in realizing topological superconductivity has been made by combining spin-orbit coupling, conventional superconductivity, and magnetism. The existence of protected Majorana mod…
Current state of the art devices for detecting and manipulating Majorana fermions commonly consist of networks of Majorana wires and tunnel junctions. We study a key ingredient of these networks - a topological Josephson junction with charging energy - and pinpoint crucial features for device implementation. The phase dependent tunneling term contains both the usual 2pi-periodic Josephson term and a 4pi-periodic Majorana tunneling term representing the coupling between Majoranas on both sides of the junction. In non-topological junctions when the charging energy is small compared to the Joseph…

Topological superconductors host new states of quantum matter which show a pairing gap in the bulk and gapless surface states providing a platform to realize Majorana fermions. Recently, alkaline-earth metal Sr intercalated Bi2Se3 has been reported to show superconductivity with a Tc ~ 3 K and a large shielding fraction. Here we report systematic normal state electronic structure studies of Sr0.06Bi2Se3 (Tc ~ 2.5 K) by performing photoemission spectroscopy. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we observe a quantum well confined two-dimensional (2D) state coexisting with a t…
