These notes (prepared for the author's lectures at the Cracow Summer School on Linear Systems organized by S. Mueller-Stach and T. Szemberg, held March 23-27, 2009 at the Pedagogical University of Cracow under the sponsorship of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) present a number of open problems on the theory of smooth projective algebraic surfaces, and put into historical context recent work on a range of topics, including Mori dream spaces and the finite generation of the Cox ring, Seshadri constants, and the resurgence of homogeneous ideals and the problem of which ordinary powers of homogeneous ideals contain given symbolic powers of those ideals. These notes include many exercises, with solutions.
We develop various aspects of classical enumerative geometry, including Euler characteristics and formulas for counting degenerate fibres in a pencil, with the classical numerical formulas being replaced by identitites in the Grothendieck-Witt group of quadratic forms with coefficients in the base-field.
We survey classical material around Lefschetz theorems for fundamental groups, and show the relation to parts of Deligne's program in Weil II. The notes are based on some aspects of the material for the Santaló lectures at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (October 2015) and the Rademacher lectures at the University of Pennsylvania (February 2016). They appear in Revista Matemática Complutense.
In this study, after introducing Pasch geometries and algebraic properties of their, we studied categorical structure of the categories of Pasch geometries with morphisms and homomorphisms. In this regard, definition and construction of some categorical objects such as: equalisers, pullbacks, initial and terminal objects and products are given.
In 1981 W.L. Edge discovered and studied a pencil $\mathcal{C}$ of highly symmetric genus $6$ projective curves with remarkable properties. Edge's work was based on an 1895 paper of A. Wiman. Both papers were written in the satisfying style of 19th century algebraic geometry. In this paper and its sequel [FL], we consider $\mathcal{C}$ from a more modern, conceptual perspective, whereby explicit equations are reincarnated as geometric objects.
Varieties of Sums of Powers describe the additive decompositions of an homogeneous polynomial into powers of linear forms. Despite their long history, going back to Sylvester and Hilbert, few of them are known for special degrees and number of variables. In this paper we aim to understand a general birational behaviour of VSP, if any. To do this we birationally embed these varieties into Grassmannians and prove the rationality, unirationality or rational connectedness of many of those in arbitrary degrees and number of variables.
We study the projective behavior, mainly with respect to osculating spaces and secant varieties, of Lagrangian Grassmannians and Spinor varieties. We prove that these varieties have osculating dimension smaller than expected. Furthermore, we give numerical conditions ensuring the non secant defectivity of Lagrangian Grassmannians in their Plücker embedding and of Spinor varieties in both their Plücker and Spinor embeddings.
Our aim is to illustrate how one can effectively apply the basic ideas and notions of topological entropy and dynamical degrees, together with recent progress of minimal model theory in higher dimension, for an explicit study of birational or biregular selfmaps of projective or compact Kähler manifolds, through concrete examples.
We discuss topics on the geometry of the moduli space of curves. We present a short proof of the Harris-Mumford theorem on the Kodaira dimension of the moduli space which replaces the computations on the stack of admissible covers by a simple study of tautological Koszul bundles on M_g. We also present a streamlined self-contained account of Verra's recent work on the unirationality of M_g. Finally, we discuss a proof that the moduli space of curves of genus 22 is of general type. Written for Surveys in Differential Geometry.
We develop basic notions and methods of algebraic geometry over the algebraic objects called hyperrings. Roughly speaking, hyperrings generalize rings in such a way that an addition is `multi-valued'. This paper largely consisits of two parts; algebraic aspects and geometric aspects of hyperrings. We first investigate several technical algebraic properties of a hyperring. In the second part, we begin by giving another interpretation of a tropical variety as an algebraic set over the hyperfield which canonically arises from a totally ordered semifield. Then we define a notion of an integral hyp…
This is a report of the author's talk at Kinosaki Algebraic Geometry Symposium 2018. We discuss some recent progress on the geometry of thin exceptional sets in Manin's Conjecture.
This is a survey article on Newton-Okounkov bodies in projective geometry focusing on the relationship between positivity of divisors and Newton-Okounkov bodies.
We present enumerative aspects of the Gross-Siebert program in this introductory survey. After sketching the program's main themes and goals, we review the basic definitions and results of logarithmic and tropical geometry. We give examples and a proof for counting algebraic curves via tropical curves. To illustrate an application of tropical geometry and the Gross-Siebert program to mirror symmetry, we discuss the mirror symmetry of the projective plane.
We discuss the behavior of Landau-Ginzburg models for toric orbifolds near the large volume limit. This enables us to express mirror symmetry as an isomorphism of Frobenius manifolds which aquire logarithmic poles along a boundary divisor. If the toric orbifold admits a crepant resolution we construct a global moduli space on the B-side and show that the associated tt^*-geometry exists globally.
This is a survey written for the Proceedings of the AMS Summer Institute in Algebraic Geometry held in Seattle in 2005. Topics discussed in the survey include the ample and the effective cone of the moduli space of curves, Kodaira dimension, Slope Conjecture, log canonical models etc.
We will survey some aspects of the smooth topology, algebraic geometry, symplectic geometry and contact geometry of anti-canonical pairs in complex dimension two.
These notes are the written version of my lectures at the Banach Center mini-school "Schubert Varieties" in Warsaw, May 18-22, 2003. Their aim is to give a self-contained exposition of some geometric aspects of Schubert calculus.
The Bagger-Witten line bundle is a line bundle over moduli spaces of two-dimensional SCFTs, related to the Hodge line bundle of holomorphic top-forms on Calabi-Yau manifolds. It has recently been a subject of a number of conjectures, but concrete examples have proven elusive. In this paper we collect several results on this structure, including a proposal for an intrinsic geometric definition over moduli spaces of Calabi-Yau manifolds and some additional concrete examples. We also conjecture a new criterion for UV completion of four-dimensional supergravity theories in terms of properties of t…
This paper reveals some new analytical and geometrical properties of the generalized algebraic multiplicity, $χ$, introduced in [7, 5] and further developed in [20, 23, 24]. In particular, it establishes a completely new connection between $χ$ and the concept of local intersection index of algebraic varieties, a central device in Algebraic Geometry. This link between Nonlinear Spectral Theory and Algebraic Geometry provides to $χ$ with a deep geometrical meaning. Moreover, $χ$ is characterized through the new notion of local determinant of the Schur operator associated to the linear path, $\ma…
We study tropical geometry in the global setting using Berkovich's deformation retraction. We state and prove the generalized balancing conditions in this setting. Starting with a strictly semi-stable formal scheme, we calculate certain sheaves of vanishing cycles using analytic étale cohomology, then we interpret the tropical weights via these cycles. We obtain the balancing condition for tropical curves on the skeleton associated to the formal scheme in terms of the intersection theory on the special fiber. Our approach works over any complete discrete valuation field.
This paper describes a framework in which techniques from arithmetic algebraic geometry are used to formulate a direct and intrinsic link between the geometry of Calabi-Yau manifolds and aspects of the underlying conformal field theory. As an application the algebraic number field determined by the fusion rules of the conformal field theory is derived from the number theoretic structure of the cohomological Hasse-Weil L-function determined by Artin's congruent zeta function of the algebraic variety. In this context a natural number theoretic characterization arises for the quantum dimensions i…
We develop homotopical algebraic geometry (see math.AG/0207028) in the special context where the base symmetric monoidal model category is the category S of spectra, i.e. what might be called, after Waldhausen, ``brave new algebraic geometry''. We discuss various model topologies on the model category of commutative algebras in S, the associated theories of geometric S-stacks (a geometric S-stack being an analog of Artin notion of algebraic stack in Algebraic Geometry), and finally show how to define global moduli spaces of associative ring spectra structures and a moduli space related to topo…
The paper investigates some aspects of the geometry and the arithmetic of a non-rigid Calabi-Yau threefold. Particular emphasis is given to the study of its L-function L(H^3,s) and the Galois representation.
We show that every coarse moduli space, parametrizing complex special linear rank two local systems with fixed boundary traces on a surface with nonempty boundary, is log Calabi-Yau in that it has a normal projective compactification with trivial log canonical divisor. We connect this to a novel symmetry of generating series for counts of essential multicurves on the surface.
It is shown that in dimension at least three a local diffeomorphism of Euclidean n-space into itself is injective provided that the pull-back of every plane is a Riemannian submanifold which is conformal to a plane. Using a similar technique one recovers the result that a polynomial local biholomorphism of complex $n$-space into itself is invertible if and only if the pull-back of every complex line is a connected rational curve. These results are special cases of our main theorem, whose proof uses geometry, complex analysis, elliptic partial differential equations, and topology.
