When a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ is rotationally symmetric, the critical order of the lower bound of radial curvatures for the absence of eigenvalues of the Laplacian is equal to $ -\frac{1}{r}$, where $r$ stands for the distance to the center point. In this paper, we shall perturb the Riemannian metric around a rotationally symmetric one and derive growth estimates of solutions to the eigenvalue equation, from which the absence of eigenvalues will follows.
Let $M^n=[0,R)\times \mathbb{S}^{n-1}$ be an $n$-dimensional ($n\geq 2$) smooth Riemannian manifold equipped with the warped product metric $g=dr^2+h^2(r)g_{\mathbb{S}^{n-1}}$ and diffeomorphic to a Euclidean ball. Assume that $M$ has strictly convex boundary. First, for the classical Steklov eigenvalue problem, we obtain an optimal lower (upper, respectively) bound for its spectrum in terms of $h'(R)/h(R)$ when $Ric_g\geq 0$ ($\leq 0$, respectively). Second, for two fourth-order Steklov eigenvalue problems studied by Kuttler and Sigillito in 1968, we derive a lower bound for their spectra in …
In this paper, we establish a kind of splitting theorem for the eigenvalues of a specific family of operators on the base of a warped product. As a consequence, we prove a density theorem for a set of warping functions that makes the spectrum of the Laplacian a warped-simple spectrum. This is then used to study the generic situation of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a class of compact G-manifolds. In particular, we give a partial answer to a question posed in 1990 by Steven Zelditch about the generic situation of multiplicity of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on principal bundles.
By applying an average method in PDE, we obtain a dichotomy between "constancy" and "infinity" of the warping functions on complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds for an appropriate isometric immersion of a multiply warped product manifold $N_1\times_{f_2} N_2 \times \cdots \times _{f_k} N_k\, $ into a Riemannian manifold. Generalizing the earlier work of the authors in [{Glasg. Math. J. 51 (2009) 579-592], we establish sharp inequalities between the mean curvature of the immersion and the sectional curvatures of the ambient manifold under the influence of quantities of a purely analytic natu…
The goal of this article is to investigate complete noncompact warped product gradient Ricci solitons. Nonexistence results, estimates for the warping function and for its gradient are proven. When the soliton is steady or expanding these nonexistence results generalize to a broader context certain pde estimates and rigidity obtained when studying warped product Einstein manifolds. When the soliton is shrinking, it is presented a nonexistence theorem with no counterpart in the Einstein case, which is proved using properties of the first eigenvalue of a weighted Laplacian.
We use spectral embeddings to give upper bounds on the spectral function of the Laplace--Beltrami operator on homogeneous spaces in terms of the volume growth of balls. In the case of compact manifolds, our bounds extend the 1980 lower bound of Peter Li for the smallest positive eigenvalue to all eigenvalues. We also improve Li's bound itself. Our bounds translate to explicit upper bounds on the heat kernel for both compact and noncompact homogeneous spaces.
In this paper, we consider the eigen-solutions of $-Δu+ Vu=λu$, where $Δ$ is the Laplacian on a non-compact complete Riemannian manifold. We develop Kato's methods on manifold and establish the growth of the eigen-solutions as $r$ goes to infinity based on the asymptotical behaviors of $Δr$ and $V(x)$, where $r=r(x)$ is the distance function on the manifold. As applications, we prove several criteria of absence of eigenvalues of Laplacian, including a new proof of the absence of eigenvalues embedded into the essential spectra of free Laplacian if the radial curvature of the manifold satisfies …
For any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ on a compact surface of genus $g$, Yang and Yau proved that the normalized first eigenvalue of the Laplacian $λ_1(ds^2)Area(ds^2)$ is bounded in terms of the genus. In particular, if $Λ_1(g)$ is the supremum for each $g$, it follows that the asymptotic growth of the sequence ${Λ_1(g)}$ is no larger than the one of $4πg$. In this paper we improve the result and we show that \[ \limsup_{g\, \rightarrow\, \infty} \, \frac{1}{g}Λ_1(g) \leq 4(3-\sqrt{5})π\approx 3.056π. \]
In this paper, we investigate complete Riemannian manifolds satisfying the lower weighted Ricci curvature bound $\mathrm{Ric}_{N} \geq K$ with $K>0$ for the negative effective dimension $N<0$. We analyze two $1$-dimensional examples of constant curvature $\mathrm{Ric}_N \equiv K$ with finite and infinite total volumes. We also discuss when the first nonzero eigenvalue of the Laplacian takes its minimum under the same condition $\mathrm{Ric}_N \ge K>0$, as a counterpart to the classical Obata rigidity theorem. Our main theorem shows that, if $N<-1$ and the minimum is attained, then the manifold…
